they fell asleep with their head on your chest. they'd been up all night coughing and blowing their nose, it's about time they finally got some sleep. their breathing is shallow and their stuffy nose has them snoring. every so often they make a snuffly little noise and cough in their sleep. you hold them close to you, rubbing your hand up and down their back gently. their nose is running a bit, dribbling down their face and onto your shirt, creating a damp spot on the light gray fabric. well, actually, it's their shirt but you wear it so often it's particularly yours now. either way, you don't mind the mess, you're just glad they're finally getting some much needed rest. you be sure to keep as still and quiet as possible, best not to wake them, since you know when they wake up they'll be right back to sneezing and coughing the day away. you press a soft kiss to their warm, clamy forehead, and give them a gentle squeeze.

Living weapon Whumpee, bloody and barely conscious, trying to drag themself away. Their legs collapse beneath them, and the last thing they see is the enemy approaching before it all goes black.

When Whumpee wakes up, they're expecting a cell. Or restraints, or something. They're very surprised to find themself on a soft bed, wounds cleaned and bandaged, completely unbound.

Stay with me

A, unconscious, bleeding, and held protectively in B’s arms, their companion shakes them gently to rouse them to half consciousness, trying to keep A awake and gazes down at them as A tiredly opens their eyes halfway. Heavy lidded eyes threatening to close any second.

B’s hand moves from A’s stomach, where it had been keeping pressure, to cradle the side of A’s face in their blood-slick hand, and coaxes it up towards B’s bruised face to establish eye contact.

“Hey… Stay with me…stay with me, please. Please keep your eyes open.”

But their eyes slowly close again as A’s head lolls completely into B’s hand.

Hero's realization

i really like when the moment the hero injures the villain fatally is followed by a realization that they were just a manipulated victim

then the hero decides to take villain with them and be their caretaker

bonus points if hero and villain had been enemies since basically forever and hero realizes that behind that cocky attitude was the shell of a vulnerable person

bonus bonus points if they take a moment to reflect on said discovery and remember tiny details of villain's behavior in fights that seemed peculiar to hero but that they had dismissed easily

and now they realize they missed all of villain's cries for help

Alternative Nightmare Trope

Okay so we all know the nightmare trope right? But. Imagine a conditioned pet Whumpee who gets forcefully taken away from Whumper (or rescued, if you'd like to see it from anyone's but Whumpee's eyes) and just wants to go back. Whumpee finds comfort in their nightmares because its the only time where they can relive their torture and be with Whumper. So when Caretaker wakes them up after finding them sobbing and screaming in their sleep, they don't understand why Whumpee always insists on leaving them alone and wanting to go back to sleep.

Caretaker and Whumpee are roommates. One night, Caretaker is woken up by sobs and screams, and they turn around towards Whumpee's bed to find them, kicking and trashing in their sleep. Caretaker walks over to where they lay, debating whether they should wake them up or not.

They remember how they used to comfort their little sister when she would call them in the middle of the night, crying from fear of a monster hiding under her bed. They remember how they used to lull her back to a peaceful sleep that would last until morning. They remember the words they would say.

Suddenly, another heart-rending scream snaps them out of their thoughts, and they look down to see Whumpee's terrified expression. They crouch down next to their bed and gently start stroking their hair.

"Hey, hey, deep breaths. It's okay, it's just you and me here, no one else, no monsters. I promise. And if one comes along, I'll be here to chase it away. It's okay, I'm here to protect you."

Slowly but surely, Whumpee's trashing ceases and their breathing slows. Caretaker smiles at the sight, keeping on stroking Whumpee's hair.

At last, they were happy that they were able to chase Whumpee's monster away.

Whump Idea

Months ago, Whumpee was taken. Caretaker was a wreck, spending the days scouring the streets in search of Whumpee and investigating at night, hoping to find some clue, even the most insignificant, about where they might be.

Caretaker and Whumpee had a special relationship, they always had. While Caretaker was an extroverted and popular person, full of friends and party invitations, Whumpee was extremely shy and reserved. They didn't like crowds, or loud noises, or talking for a long time. In fact, if it were up to them they wouldn’t have spoken to anyone at all. To anyone but Caretaker. And Caretaker was grateful for this, for the fact that, with them, Whumpee smiled and laughed, cried and vented, a completely different person from the one with that neutral expression and empty eyes which they were the rest of the time.

One day, finally, Caretaker manages to find Whumpee, and their heart skips a beat. Whumpee is covered in bruises and dried blood, thin in the most severe meaning of the word, it is as if Caretaker can count all their body’s bones, and their complexion is pale as that of a ghost, their lips of the same purple as the dark circles under their closed eyes.

If it haven’t been for the pulse they heard when they places their trembling fingers on their neck, Caretaker would have thought Whumpee was dead. But, as soon as the two’s skin makes contact, Whumpee's eyes suddenly open, and a strange expression forms on their face. At first Caretaker thought it was confusion, but then they realized: it was just pure terror.

"Hey, hey, it's okay. It's me, it’s Caretaker. It's going to be okay" Caretaker tries, but their words are uttered in vain, and Whumpee pushes their weak convulsing body against the wall, screaming hysterically and crying, no, sobbing desperately, as if danger was about to envelop them. But it doesn't make sense, Caretaker thinks, because they’re here now and they’re ready to take Whumpee to safety. There is nothing to be afraid of, Whumper is no longer here, there is only Caretaker. Yet, Whumpee's heart wrenching screams don't cease.

The torch falls from Caretaker's hands and they retreat, realization evident in their eyes.

Whumpee is reacting like this because they are afraid of Caretaker.
