Mother’s Day sale at my house 11am-4pm this Sunday May 2nd (=a week before mama’s day) featuring some nice pitchers from my last wood firing, boxes from this winter’s kurinuki workshops, slabby creations, new cone 6 mugs and more. Happy Easter y’all! Delighted to share some of the results from yesterday’s kiln unload at @monocacyriverpottery with many gems and Easter eggs including this big vase which I’m quite happy with. I don’t celebrate Easter in a religious sense but it seemed fitting that yesterday was one of those Easter/Xmas experiences that so many wood-fire potters so eagerly await, when we can finally discover the individual fruits of the collective labor. It’s always exciting and rewarding to see your own work come out of the kiln, but all so much the richer of an experience to see all of my peers’ work as well, to see it evolve over time, and to see the amazing diversity of styles, all unified by this collective venture. I love unloading days. Unlike the firing, when smaller groups take shifts in stoking the kiln over 24 hours (or so), the whole group of potters is present during the unload, to share the discovery of everyone’s work, and to partake in the final cleanup which is significant.... this is a huge kiln with 3 chambers and those silicon carbon shelves can be heavy as f**k, and they all need to be moved, scraped, recoated with kiln wash, and put away. This would be definitely harder without the village. I meant to share pics and footage of the loading and firing, which I will do in reverse order, soon. Happy birthday dear Juliana... you would have been 32 yesterday I think and left us too soon. I wish I had called you to catch up all these times I thought of you, but so glad we got to know each other. Juliana passed away recently and I was inspired to find and frame this portrait I had done of her back in 2012, along with some others. Framing this with a light blue on dark blue within a light tan wooden frame really makes me see it in a new way, and I’m glad to have this piece of her to cherish... I wasn’t sure about posting this more personal stuff, but it felt appropriate this week. Also this induced a revisiting of other old portraits that I’ve been framing recently, so maybe I’ll share some of that sometime. Flashing slip applied to a large coiled vase for the upcoming wood firing at @monocacyriverpottery . This vase was mostly made during the 4-week course I taught with @baltimoreclayworks focusing on coiling with flattened coils and paddle and anvil, which was super fun with 9 students. I build these fairly methodically and love the contrast between that slow buildup of energy while forming and the ecstatic release while applying slip and decorating which is done very quickly. Join me and @baltimoreclayworks for grounding practice starting next week with a four-week coiling course on zoom. This course specifically focuses on making pots with flattened coil and using a paddle and anvil to form the clay, a process which can become quite meditative. Bisque anvils that I threw are available for pickup at Clayworks. I love this technique for making large (for me) work but it can also be used for making small functional items. I love seeing the pieces gradually materialize and the form drawing its own silhouette as is grows, like a plant pushing upward, searching for light once its base is established. A manifestation of the mind’s work and a personal expression resulting from the hand’s interactions with the physical attributes and limitations of clay. Another box, this one cone 6 oxidation with an imitation ash glaze from John Britt’s book. This box was shaped and textured as a solid block of clay, then the lid cut with a wire tool and both parts hollowed out, after which the legs we added. Also excited to showcase this family of slabby planters at the @pottersguild outdoor winter market this Sunday 11am-4pm along with many of my guild friends. These are built with slabs of combined clays and have drainage holes. Cone 6 oxidation with layered oxides, wax resist and glazes. Next Sunday is a great opportunity to interact with the @pottersguild community (and get some end of year gifts) at our Outdoor Winter Market with around a dozen members of guild members selling their wares, in the parking lot of the Meadow Mill, 11am-4pm. I’m having two pottery sales this w/e! Saturday is @greatergoodsbaltimore in front of @bwillowbmo (see previous post). Sunday I am holding a holiday sale 11-4pm on my driveway, similar to the one I had in Oct, but just one day.
