on the one hand, it feels genuinely insane speculating on plot points based on an actor's actual IRL name because television does not work that way! logically I know this!

but on the other hand. when doctor who casts an actor named SUSAN TWIST in recurring roles every single episode of a season that: 1. broke the fourth-wall multiple times, 2. had an episode about coincidences, 3. did weirdly long musical number about "there's always a twist at the end," and 4. discussed susan by name and emphasizes the doctor's identity as a parent way more than usual

I start feeling insane and believing that fourth-wall-breaking, throwing-all-established-tv-logic-out-the-window, extremely meta actor-name plot twists are possible

In the hands of different actors, this would have been a completely different story. When you read the subtitles/script and understand the story that was WRITTEN and then you watch the performance and see how different that story is LIVED. It is so special. Absolutely magical.

Helena running away to be with a random guy makes no sense. Until you see his daughter. Myka giving exactly zero shits about the case makes no sense. Unless you see how much she needs Helena. The canon ending as written is 'Myka lets Helena go be happy in this new life she's built for herself with her replacement family and moves on.'

But those looks on their faces. As soon as the other can't see, everything changes. A hug is just an excuse to hide your face.

And those faces say that neither of them have moved on in the slightest. That they were in love, and neither of them are over it. Just a moment, a precious moment where the mask slips and they can just hold each other without risking what she would think. Without risking losing the very brave sacrifice each one is making by letting the other one go 'be happy'. It's gorgeous, it's tragic, it's a promise that the story isn't over.

And it lives on. In fanfiction.

it still fucks me up that, like, back in the second ever season of doctor who, new companion vicki was portrayed as being obsessed with the beatles - which at the time was a joke, because vicki was from the future and saw the beatles as 'classical music' whereas to existing companions barbara and ian, from 1963, they were contemporary and modern

and now, we've just had an episode that hugely plays on the fact that the beatles are now nostalgic for people
