Why I have started yoga to maintain my mental health at 35 AND why my grandad didn’t. We are in 2019 and I’m 35. I’m a self employed PT who works hard, trains hard, likes a beer and a square meal and has a decent bunch of mates around me. My Grandad was 35 in 1968. Was a coal man at the time. Worked hard and was married with two children. Also liked a pint or two AND loved a square meal. Not too different on the face of it except he had a real job and responsibilities 😕 😂 I’ve recently started practicing yoga. I love it and can’t see myself quitting anytime soon. Why? I know how to train and I can stretch myself to improve flexibility... but my head can sometimes be a mess. Not many blokes will tell you but I can lose my shit over small things, It benefits no one, the only person who loses out is me and it doesn’t resolve the problem. That amongst some other small problems is the reason I have started yoga. And before anyone says to just ‘chill’, no need for yoga, you clearly have no idea. Telling someone to chill who has a tendency to punch the wall when they lose their keys is like telling a fat person to be thin. Don’t even utter the c word when someone is having an anger fit. I’m not saying yoga is a one stop shop for mental health but it definitely helps in some aspects of sorting your head out. In 1968 on the other hand... yoga hadn’t been invented (joke) but it definitely hadn’t made its way to working class men in middle England so what did my grandad do for mental health. Good question. I don’t know, I don’t even know if he needed to but if he did it sure didn’t get mentioned. Three reasons men’s mental health is more talked about today than in 1968 in my humble opinion. 1 - It was less of a problem due to community and hardship. As stupid as it sounds. In Sebastian Jungers book, Tribes, he outlines how humans fair much better mentally when in small communities facing daily struggle together than they do in huge cities with no real problems to overcome in the sense of just living/surviving. My inner monologue throughout my first yoga class last week; 1st minute, - This is easy, I got this. 3rd minute, - I’m not paying to come back here. I can do this at home. 8th minute, - Oooo that’s a nice stretch. 15th minute, - Is she holding her hands behind her back. Mine aren’t even close. 20th minute, - Can guys wear yoga pants? 23rd minute, - This is starting to burn. 30th minute, - Is this that hot yoga? I’m fucking sweating. 33rd minute, - I’m not coming if guys do this in yoga pants. 40th minute - Yeah love, I could do it too if I was 46kg. 44th minute - I think my shorts just ripped... nope it was a hamstring. 50th minute - Ahhh this is better. Just a nice stretch. 55th minute - I’m gonna have steak again for dinner. 60th minute, - Shit. Was that me snoring. I loved it. As you can see from my thoughts throughout, I was kinda ‘present’ but I wanna be zenned as fuck. I thought yoga was supposed to chill you out? I came out pissed off that I was shit at yoga... so back I go today. So I’m intermittent fasting my way back into shape after a lax month of traveling and socializing. For the uninitiated intermittent fasting or IF is simply a period of time spent fasting either a daily window or a period of the week when zero calories are consumed. Basically I stop eating at 9pm and don’t eat again until 1pm. Giving me an 8 hour eating window. When fasting my main considerations are; • Calories still count. I make sure that the fasting period isn’t resulting in me over eating during my eating window. Something that I can easily do as I have a big appetite. • Daily required protein, fats and micro nutrients are still met. Not eating until midday or later leaves lots of calories to play with for the remaining meals of the day. Don’t fall into the trap of fasting just so that you can have a burger and fries at lunch followed by a pizza for dinner just because they fit into your daily calories... you won’t last long on IF if you do. • Monitor your training closely. Now, IF isn’t optimal if you’re aiming to reach your peak physical fitness. It’s not going to support muscle growth and/or strength gains. If these are important to you (only superseded by fat loss) then make sure the fast isn’t hindering your training. Hit at least 1.6g per kilo protein and you won’t lose muscle if you’re hitting muscle groups 2 x per week, but don’t think you’ll be gaining muscle either. • Don’t let it dictate your social life. If breakfast with friends is a favorite of yours (it is mine) then have a day or two per week off of IF. Remember, it works because it helps (in most cases) support a calorie deficit. It’s not magic. Are you active on holiday? I like moving so I do stuff. It’s my default setting. Unfortunately, so is eating lots. In my case my natural like of being active goes towards offsetting my love of food. Some people (with ‘fast metabolisms’) Like moving and naturally eat less food. These people stay lean easily. There’s a name for these people with four letters ;) Some people (with ‘slow metabolisms) don’t like moving much and love food. Unlucky. Work on it. What I’m sayin is that your habits, likes and dislikes are what make up your metabolic rate. A lesson from my time at sea... I’ve just done a week on a yacht in Croatia. And before you jump to the idea that I was a first mate, jumping around the rigging on high seas and burning thousands of calories per day, I wasn’t. It was debauched. Mimosas before midday and never in bed before 3am. Debauched! I loved it. The lesson; Each morning there were a few crew members from other boats who went running or did yoga. Dickheads! Was my first thought. They’re on holiday, they can go a week without training. They’re doing it to show off their lean ass bodies... Why did I jump to these ideas. Because their action offended me. Because I was being lazy (hungover) Because I couldn’t be arsed to train. Because they were doing shit I knew I should be doing. I was offended. Loser or what?! I was being the same guy who has a go at me on a daily basis back home. The guy at brunch who slags me off in front of a table full of people because I take action toward being bad ass and he doesn’t! The woman who tells her coworkers who are dieting to ‘live a little’ and have a muffin or to come for after work drinking. The fat bloke who tells me I’m gonna die anyway so why bother.
