Pyrrha Dve is the reason my name will one day be Gideon
which makes sense I swear
cannot stop thinking about Pyrrha Dve being transmasc and transfem and a secret third thing all at the same time. canonically.

Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.

Two things:
1 the gym of life, building a walkable cyclable world means people exercise more just by being around.
2. Yes! Playful exercise! Adult playgrounds, climbing halls, sports games, meeting with people to exercise/play

I want to also reblog this here, with special emphasis on the trusted companions. I very likely would have had a shut down at my last day of school assembly if my hl chem teacher hadn’t noticed that even with earplugs I was getting too much noise and let me sit in the hall. So yeah, get people to help you.
things i’ve learned about hyperacusis, because the medical system is frankly SHIT
And frankly, I’d rather my experience help someone else who needs it. This isn’t universal or exhaustive, just something that I wanted to share. Anyone can reblog or add on, but don’t clown.
Hyperacusis is a neurological disorder characterized by extreme sensitivity to sound, and it’s a fucking bitch to deal with. I’ve had it for two years, and only recently got a diagnosis. In my case, I’m fairly certain it was caused by a combination of existing ADHD/sensory issues and the slowly building stress of high school, which is an entirely different can of worms that I still occasionally have vague nightmares about.
It’s hard to cope with, and largely not understood by the public.
You’re going to get some judgement from older folks about being “antisocial” for wearing headphones and avoiding crowds, especially if you’re younger. This is the equivalent of a squirrel encouraging a fish to be more outgoing when the fish is literally struggling to breathe and taking refuge in its bowl of water.
Earplugs will be your best friend. Don’t listen to audiologists who tell you that it’s the worst thing you can ever do to your hearing; the medical system is largely unsympathetic to your actual needs. Get them in bulk, and use them as needed. Silence is bad for your ears, yes, but damaging them with noise is even worse. Earplugs combined with over-the-ear headphones playing music is a good compromise.
Tumblr media
Seriously. Stock the fuck up on these lil bitches. Put ‘em in an altoids tin and never leave the house without some. And don’t forget to use clean ones; these are disposable for a reason. If you store them in a dirty place, you’ll end up with an ear infection.
You may need accommodations, but that doesn’t make you any lesser of a person. Start looking around cripplepunk* spaces for confidence. Own your disability. You deserve to live just as much as anyone else, and you deserve to be happy. Accessibility may not be universal, but it sure isn’t optional either. You are worth more than what you can contribute to society.
If possible, an audiologist can help you get custom made earplugs to filter out sound equally. These let you reduce volume at all frequencies, as opposed to the foam earplugs which muffle sound.
Earplugs designed for musicians and autistic folks are also good options; ideally, you want to have something of a variety of hearing protection. Too much or too little will only make things worse. Find what works for you and allows you to function and heal. Active noise cancelling is also an option.
Lifestyle changes won’t fix the problem and you should be skeptical of anyone who says they will, but they’re also not something to be overlooked. Sound dampening panels can be expensive, but keeping soft things in your room can improve the sound absorption. For me, having a rather large fabric stash is an excellent solution, but plushies and hanging quilts are also reasonable. Reducing stress can help, too– start setting some healthy and reasonable boundaries. Force yourself to view your distress as rational and justified, rather than something to push through.
Tinnitus Retraining Therapy is the main method used in treating hyperacusis, but this…can vary. In my experience, audiologists are unsympathetic shitheads about this, and can veer into victim blaming, so take it with a grain of salt and keep your own limitations in mind. It works on a similar principle as exposure therapy, rewiring the brain in order to break down the association between “noise = bad” and helping you become accustomed to normal levels of auditory processing. Never force yourself to do this if it causes you distress; take it at your own pace. Forcing yourself will only strengthen the associations created, and make things worse for you. Imagine your brain as a scared cat in a new house; give it space, then introduce new stimuli as needed. Tinnitus retraining therapy is not punishment. You don’t need to punish yourself for having this disorder, even if you think that’ll make it go away faster.
You deserve patience and love.
*cripplepunk, sometimes censored as c-punk, is a movement similar to disabled pride that centers the needs and lives of disabled folks over the convenience of the abled population. Not everyone is comfortable with reclaiming the word “cripple” and it should be used with discretion. Be wary of physical/mental separatism in disability.
Anyways, I think that’s all for now! I may add on more later, but I hope this helps.

You can try to put up a noise dampening barrier between you and the heater (sleeping bags thrown over a clothing rack will do in a pinch) but I think the best solution would be to ask if you can turn it off when it bothers you. Your roommate should understand
if anyone who sees this is someone who also really struggles with buzzing noises etc at night please can you help me
I mean autistic or people with hyperacusis or other hearing sensitivities
I've always struggled with machine noises and buzzing and at night it makes me feel like my heart will beat out of my chest with anxiety. I know this isn't normal
My new roommate has a heater thing he sometimes leaves in all night and I literally cannot sleep because my flight or fight is triggered
Is there any advice someone with similar issues has been through to help block the noise out? I'm desperate
Normal earplugs don't work, and I can't sleep with music. I've tried exposure but I'm still awake. I've asked him to turn it off and he does sometimes which I am grateful for but man I'm paying way too much rent to not be able to sleep at night

I’d like to add to some of the points made.
Silence isn’t awesome for your ears, but dampening, muffling, and canceling noise is a tool that MUST be used. In day to day life noise canceling earbuds or over ear headphones usually work, but for especially loud situations I recommend getting earplugs, or heavy duty noise reduction headphones. (The kind people wear on construction sites generally work well and can be doubled up with earplugs)
YES DAMPEN YOUR ROOM. If you have access to a 3D printer, you can make dampening surfaces yourself, but fabric, yarn, blankets and bookshelves are very helpful.
Hyperacusis will inhibit you from filtering out sound, but there may be activities that lessen this effect, for me it’s reading, even just holding a book makes it slightly easier. I know someone who plays Tetris to deal with it. This doesn’t work for everyone and certain sounds and loudness levels will still get past, but a displacement activity can be super useful.
you can still have fun at loud events. With the right accommodations. For my end of school dance, I downloaded some music I enjoy and played it at an acceptable level on my noise canceling earbuds, and I had a good-ish time. It was still loud, and I had a sound-hangover the next day, but I got to spend a fun evening dancing with my friends.
TRT barely ever works on type 4/pain hyperacusis/nociception hyperacusis/noxacusis/hyperacusis nox (my type) and it can be really painful. Especially if (like me) you don’t have comorbid tinnitus, it probably won’t do shit.
Hyperacusis can be acquired, or be chronic, it can be constant or fluctuate in intensity. Sometimes it goes away, sometimes it sticks. I’ve had hyperacusis for as long as I can remember, but it got significantly worse after an overwhelming episode when I was in highschool. Hyperacusis is half a dozen disorders in a trenchcoat, which ever one you’ve got will impact your experience.
You’ve got this! You deserve all the love and patience and accommodations you need. You’re enough.

Two idiots decided that they weren't going anywhere in life and thought they should go to college to get ahead. The first goes in to see the counselor, who tells him to take Math, History, and Logic.
"What's Logic?" the first idiot asks.
The professor answers by saying, "Let me give you an example."
"Do you own a weedeater?"
"I sure do."
"Then I can assume, using logic, that you have a yard," replied the professor.
"That's real good!"
The professor continues, "Logic will also tell me that since you have a yard, you also own a house."
Impressed, "Amazin!"
"And since you own a house, logic dictates that you have a wife."
"That's Betty Mae! This is incredible!" The idoit is obviously catching on.
"Finally, since you have a wife, logically I can assume that you are heterosexual," said the professor.
"You're absolutely right! Why that's the most fascinatin' thing I ever heard! I can't wait to take that logic class!!"
The idiot, proud of the new world opening up to him, walks back into the hallway, where his friend is still waiting.
"So what classes are ya takin'?" asks the friend.
"Math, History, and Logic!" he replies.
"What in tarnation is logic???" asked his friend.
"Let me give you an example. Do ya own a weedeater?" he asked.
"No," his friend replied.
"Gay."

"oh, but you said you had a crush on someone-" no. that was me gaslighting myself into thinking i had a crush on someone because of how sexually centered society is.

I literally just spent an afternoon mending a sweatshirt.
I have fun elbow patches now!
Resources for Mending Clothes
Tumblr media
We toss out over 80 pounds of textiles each year. These textiles are often made of plastic materials (polyester, nylon), made in unethical conditions, dyed with harsh dyes that often get put into the rivers, etc. Even a single cotton shirt releases carbon emissions and uses tons of water.
So the best thing to prevent the unsustainable growth of the fashion industry is to make sure that your clothing lasts as long as possible. To do so, mending clothing is a must. So here are some resources to help you learn how to do various things, such as sewing a button, to tailoring clothes, or even upcycling old clothing into new styles.
* How to sew on three different types of button
* How to hand sew on a patch on a torn pair of jeans
* How to sew up a hole in an old shirt
* How to sew a simple T-shirt
* How to upcycle old clothing into new clothing
* More upcycle and sewing techniques
* How to repair a damaged sock
* How to do an invisible stitch
* 3 different stitches to work with for different results
* How to make a T-shirt smaller so it fits you better
* How to make repairs to your shoes
These are just a few of the things that you can do in order to make sure that your clothing lasts for a long time. Nobody wants to keep buying new clothing, as it is expensive and wasteful.
So making alterations to your clothing, or fixing small holes hen you see them can be hugely beneficial to your wallet, to garment workers, and to the environment in the long term.
