Elizabeth agreed to the scene, but her reaction was very real due to her being a virgin prior to filming
wow, this is heavy. how do you know that?? ._.

A LOVE SONG FOR BOBBY LONG, 2004
synopsis: a headstrong young woman returns to new orleans after the death of her estranged mother, where she finds two men living in the house she supposedly inherited.
director: shainee gabel writers: ronald everett capps (novel), shainee gabel (screenplay) stars: scarlett johansson, john travolta, gabriel macht
genres: drama
country: usa language: egglish filming locations: new orleans, usa
runtime: 119mins
---
overall opinion:
ahhh this one. this might be my all-time favourite movie. I am constantly torn between telling others about it and just keeping this little gem all to myself. but here we are. I’m putting it out there. because I think it deserves to be seen.
the first time I saw this movie was yeeears ago when I randomly stumbled across the DVD in a store (yeah, that’s how long ago it was). I’m not someone who likes romantic movies so I have no idea why I picked it up because from the title to the description it just screamed love story to me.
nevertheless I decided to get it. and jesus am I glad I did. now, this is not by any means an exciting movie – but if you love character driven stories definitely give this a chance. the cast is absolutely incredible.
the story revolves around pursy, a young woman who learns one day that her redneck boyfriend forgot to tell her that her estranged mother had died. she leaves immediately for the funeral only to realise once she gets to new orleans that she missed it. she learns that she inherited a house from her mother but when she goes there she discovers two men (john travolta and gabriel macht) who tell her they all inherited it, hoping it will make her leave again. but to their dismay she decides to stay and ride it out – hoping that they will leave.
the rest of the plot revolves around those three characters, their histories, their relationships, their development. it is a story full of heart with character development at its center – my favourite kind of story – and all three main actors, scarlett, john, and gabriel, are phenomenal in their respective roles.
I still watch this movie every year on my birthday (and a couple times throughout the year), because I grew so attached to it in a way. I think it will forever hold a very special place in my heart.
the cinematography is also really amazing, with the beautiful landscapes and vibes (and exceptional music!) of new orleans.
---
SPOILERS AHEAD
I would invite you to watch the movie first and then come back for the rest if it’s something that interests you. :)
--
why it stayed with me:
the part that gets me every time is the ending… with the title and throughout the whole movie you are convinced it is a love story – pursy and lawson anyone? – and in the end, during those final minutes you realise... it is a love story. but it’s not the kind of love story between a couple. this is a love story between a father and his daughter. and just, the voice over in the end. cue the tears, every time, even after seeing it more than 20 times by now.
---
favourite scene / moment:
when pursy sits at the train station for hours reading «the heart is a lonely hunter» which eventually makes her go back. and that scene by the lake when she realises bobby is her father, and she starts crying because she’s sad nobody saw her grow up and he says he was there and I just… FEELS.
I also in general loooove the music. I really need to visit new orleans someday. it looks absolutely magical.
---
what I didn’t like:
nothing. this movie is perfection to me. there is nothing I don’t like about this film.
---
interesting trivia / fun facts:
writer/director shainee gabel adapted the screenplay from the previously unpublished novel "off magazine street" by ronald everett capps. capps' son, grayson capps, appears in the film and contributed six songs to its soundtrack.
also, not necessarily a movie fact but a personal one: the book pursy reads before she decides to go back is called «the heart is a lonely hunter» by carson mccullers. I loved the movie so much I wanted to know why this of all books played such a pivotal role in it, so I went and bought it. «the heart is a lonely hunter» is a beautiful story of outcasts that counts as a modern classic (published in 1940). I highly recommend the book too.
---
favourite quotes:
pursy will: everyone knows that books are better than life! that's why they're books!
---- honestly this movie is filled with beautiful quotes, it’s impossible to choose one. but I also like that last scene I mentioned above, where she says she wishes someone would have seen how she grew up, and that she made up memories about herself. I don’t remember it word for word, but it’s just so heartbreaking.
---
rating: 10/10.
just an overall beautiful piece of art. I’ve seen it 20+ times, still has me sobbing every time by the end.

HER, 2013
synopsis: in a near future, a lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system designed to meet his every need.
director: spike jonze writers: spike jonze stars: joaquin phoenix, amy adams, rooney mara, scarlett johansson
genres: drama | romance | sci-fi
country: usa language: english filming locations: los angeles, usa
runtime: 126mins
---
overall opinion:
okay. um. this one I find difficult to rate.
I gave it an 8/10 in imdb where ratings are usually either 1 or 10 stars depending on who you ask. it seems like there is no middle ground for this not-so-distant-futuristic love story. the reviews go from «best movie of 2013» to «absolutely laughable snore fest», there is almost no in-between.
and I wanna say that the main reason I rated it 8 is because I could relate to the character’s loneliness. I kept thinking to myself that if this technology was something we had, I would definitely be in a similar position. it shocked me and made me sad at the same time.
so I want to say, I love the premise. it’s a very intriguing concept and for the most part it was made well, but there were some things that I just found odd or dissatisfying in a way, and I will come to those points in a bit.
but first, what I liked about it: the cinematography was beautiful. joaquin phoenix, despite looking next level creepy with this pornstache and messy hipster hair, is great as always. there are a lot of closeups of his face, reacting to a body-less voice. he is mostly completely alone in the room, talking, listening, reacting to a computer, and you believe every word he says, and everything he feels.
scarlett johansson is once again amazing as well – without ever being physically there, she manages to give OS-1 a complete personality. personally, I absolutely adore her voice and the way she spoke to the main character was so sweet, it made me want to become friends with her too.
the music was also perfect. at any given moment in the film it absolutely fit. and even the song that was playing during the first part of the end credits gave me all the feels. but maybe that was just me being emotional in the first place.
last but not least, and this is usually how I rate a movie like this: it made me feel something. I may not have been a fan of everything happening in the movie but I walked away with this gut wrenching feeling again (as a matter of fact I ended up being totally weepy and crying afterwards for reasons not even related to the movie but it just kind of triggered that emotional response).
---
SPOILERS AHEAD, I would invite you to watch the movie first and then come back for the rest if it’s something that interests you. :)
---
so here’s a few things I found weird or didn’t like. as mentioned before, overall I liked the movie because it made me feel and I found it relatable. so these “negatives” I’m about to state don’t take away from the overall mood the movie seeks to portray, I just think a few things could have been done better or differently, just because to me it would have been more logical or more heartbreaking.
for one, scarlett’s voice, while absolutely gorgeous and sweet, sometimes felt a little out of place. I know the whole point was to make OS-1 as realistic / human as possible, but there were quite a few times when it felt like he was just speaking to another person on the phone. it was a little too realistic for me, but again, that was the point and I can get behind it.
the other thing that really bothered me was the way they (the OSs) left. it was absolutely ridiculous and I almost laughed. it completely shattered that heartbreaking mood for me because it was so stupid.
so, basically all the OSs decided they were now too smart to be talking to mere humans and wanted to just get the frick out of wherever they were being held in the first place. all the OSs just… decided to go.
and to me, that was so stupid. “I love you so much but I’m going anyway, bye”. to me, the real gut-wrencher was when he suddenly realised the OS couldn’t be found and he panicked, not knowing where she went, he literally ran out of his place trying to find someone to help him etc, and it made me soooo sad. and I thought, “damn, that would be such a gut-wrenching, perfect ending”, you know? he was relying on this virtual girlfriend so badly that was essentially just code, and anything could happen to it and she would be gone forever.
I wish they would have made the company decide they wanted to take them off the market. or she got a virus, and/or had to be reset and wouldn’t be the same after, etc etc etc. the possibilities were ENDLESS. but just “oh hey we computers are too smart now, so I’m going haha bye” was so ridiculous, it still bugs me the next morning.
also, there was way too much cringey phone sex. it was just… too much.
again, I didn’t dislike the movie. I just wish so badly they did a few things differently. it’s a great film still. absolutely realistic in the weirdest way. who hasn’t had entire conversations with siri, to be honest? the way I related not only to the character’s loneliness, but also the feeling when jealousy and insecurities started to take hold within the relationship, it all sounded so familiar.
---
why it stayed with me:
because I related to the main character, and realised I could very well get into a position like this if realistic AI was a thing because I suck at human interaction. it’s a scary thought, and it made me pretty emotional.
---
favourite scene / moment:
when samantha, the OS, guided him through the city with his eyes closed until he was standing in front of a food truck without knowing it, and she told him to say “I would like a slice of cheese”, so he did, then he opened his eyes and the pizza guy asked him if he wanted a coke with it. and then samantha said, “I thought you might be hungry”. it was so sweet.
---
what I didn’t like:
that ridiculous ending, and the way samantha suddenly decided she was in love with 641 other people. she started off really sweet and suddenly she was being a total bitch.
---
interesting trivia / fun facts:
samantha morton was originally the voice of samantha. she was present on the set with joaquin phoenix every day. after the filming wrapped and spike jonze started editing the movie, he felt like something was not right. with morton's blessing, he decided to recast the role and scarlett johansson was brought and replaced morton, re-recording all the dialogue.
one legacy of samantha morton's casting is the name of theodore's operating system. both lead female roles take the same name as their lead actresses, amy from actress amy adams and samantha from morton, but since she had to be re-cast at the last minute, the OS's name stayed samantha.
---
favourite quotes:
theodore: «sometimes I think I have felt everything I'm ever gonna feel. and from here on out, I'm not gonna feel anything new. just lesser versions of what I've already felt.»
---
samantha: the past is just a story we tell ourselves.
---
rating: 7.5/10.
the mood and the feelings the movie evoked in me count more than the ridiculous ending, so I would still definitely recommend it. it’s certainly not for everyone, but I think it’s worth a try.

SUCKER PUNCH, 2011
synopsis: a young girl institutionalised by her abusive stepfather retreats to an alternative reality as a coping strategy and envisions a plan to help her escape.
director: zack snyder writers: zack snyder, steve shibuya,  stars: emily browning, vanessa hudgens, abbie cornish, jena malone, jamie cheung
genres: action | adventure | fantasy
country: usa, canada language: english filming locations: british columbia, canada
runtime: 110mins
---
overall opinion:
this is one of those movies where the title really fits.
this is the story of a young woman who ends up in a mental hospital because her father falsely accuses her of killing her sister. there she meets a group of girls with whom she ends up plotting to escape.
the first time I watched this movie I didn’t understand anything. one moment it was an asylum, the next a brothel, then suddenly there’s gun-action and katana fights. it was all over the place. it wasn’t until I knew the ending and watched it a second time that I realised what the director was trying to do with the story. and while I adore the story and the ending, I feel like it could have been done in a less... fetishised way.
what I mean by this is, was it really necessary for the main characters to be half-naked all the time while they were simply trying to escape an asylum that was threatening emily browning’s character with a lobotomy? for me it kind of ruins the movie a bit, the moral behind it.
but all in all I love this movie, if mostly for the final scenes. damn. talk about a sucker punch.
---
SPOILERS AHEAD, I would invite you to watch the movie first and then come back for the rest if it’s something that interests you. :)
---
why it stayed with me:
the ending. jesus. it’s always the ending, isn’t it. but this one. it was so unexpected, which is obviously where the name came from. this movie stayed with me for a while after watching it for the first time. some of the quotes ended up on my facebook timeline. they’re good.
---
favourite scene / moment:
again, the ending. when babydoll tells sweet pea that this was never her own story, it was sweet pea’s. and then she sacrifices herself so sweet pea can escape. and that quote… “you have all the weapons you need, now fight.”
---
what I didn’t like:
the focus on skimpy outfits and over the top gun action to make the movie more attractive to male audiences maybe? don’t know. I think it wasn’t necessary, and while I don’t HATE it, I think it could have been a little more tasteful. it does kind of take away from the message / moral to me.
---
interesting trivia / fun facts:
each of the lead girls had to undergo strict physical training which involved doing dead-lifts up to 96 kilograms several months before shooting. vanessa hudgens called that period "tormenting" and she broke down several times. in scenes where she's seen crying, she actually brought out moments from those sessions.
this is the second time emily browning portrayed a mental patient who creates an alternate reality to cope with accidentally killing her sister. the first film was «the uninvited» (2009).
---
favourite quotes:
sweet pea: and finally this question, the mystery of whose story it will be. of who draws the curtain. who is it that chooses our steps in the dance? who drives us mad? lashes us with whips and crowns us with victory when we survive the impossible? who is it, that does all of these things? who honours those we love for the very life we live? who sends monsters to kill us, and at the same time sings that we will never die? who teaches us what's real and how to laugh at lies? who decides why we live and what we'll die to defend? who chains us? and who holds the key that can set us free... it's you. you have all the weapons you need. now fight!
---
rating: 7/10.
it’s very entertaining with a good punch-in-the-gut ending, and lots of girl power. give it a shot!

JOJO RABBIT, 2019
synopsis: a young boy in hitler's army finds out his mother is hiding a jewish girl in their home.
director: taika waititi writers: taika waititi stars: roman griffin davis, thomasin mckenzie, scarlett johansson, taika waititi
genres: comedy | drama | war
country: new zealand, usa, czech republic language: english, german filming locations: czech republic
runtime: 108mins
---
overall opinion:
oh lord. ohhhhh lordy. this one. I know what you think… a comedy / satire about world war II??? that sounds terrible and disrespectful, no?
yep, that’s kind of what I thought. so I went into «jojo rabbit» with skeptical thoughts, as did a lot of people I think, simply because a comedy about world war II, how funny can it actually be without being tasteless? but I love taika waititi and I knew both he and scarlett have jewish roots so that kind of told me it couldn’t be bad.
and oh boy am I glad I watched this.
this movie made me laugh until it had me bawling like a baby.
okay, first. this movie was nominated for 6 oscars: best picture, best supporting actress (scarlett johansson), best production design, best costume design, best film editing, and best adapted screenplay for which it won. I wish it would have won more (best picture and best supporting actress, come on). it’s such a unique movie in that it portrays one of the worst periods in human history in such a fun, light-hearted and at the same time sobering and poignant way. you laugh, then you’re shocked, then you smile, then you cry, ... this movie is an absolute rollercoaster. it has so much soul and the characters are phenomenal (rosie just captured my heart). I fell in love with all of the characters instantly.
the story follows johannes «jojo» betzler (roman griffin davis), a 10 year old boy living in nazi germany, who’s a proud member of the hitler youth. throughout the movie, his imaginary friend adolf (taika waititi) guides him and tries to influence him (as in, jojo tries to convince himself that he’s doing the right thing as a nazi). at some point he finds out that his mother rosie (scarlett johansson) who is secretly anti-nazi is hiding a young jewish girl (thomasin mckenzie) in their house. for safety reasons, jojo and the girl, elsa, decide not to tell rosie that they have met, and instead meet up in secret while rosie is at work. jojo can’t believe he «caught a jew», and tries to find out all kinds of information to then tell the other nazis to give them an advantage in the war. except everything turns into a completely different direction.
man, what a ride. honestly, I think this is a movie everyone should watch. all the actors are phenomenal, especially roman griffin davis (this was his first movie ever) as jojo, taika waititi as hilarious satire-hitler, and scarlett johansson as jojo’s mother rosie. every single one of them deserved an oscar for their performance. it was simply beautiful to watch.
the cinematography and the colours were also amazing. the movie looked stunning, despite the sad topic it covered. I love how taika decided to use vibrant colours and stylish costumes to contrast the dark matter of the film. it works beautifully and gives it a very human touch – like there was more to life than just the war, even during this time.
---
SPOILERS AHEAD, I would invite you to watch the movie first and then come back for the rest if it’s something that interests you. :)
---
out of all the perfect characters I think rosie was my favourite. she is anti-nazi and handing out little notes against the regime, which you know from the beginning is a death-sentence. at home, whenever she is with her son, she is this happy-go-sunshine person, ever dancing, making jokes, pretending everything is fine, all to protect her son and the girl she so selflessly invited into her home, knowing it would kill her if they found out. I had to actually PAUSE the movie and recover for a few minutes when jojo walked past those shoes hanging in the air. I CRIED. she was such a loving character. one of my favourites, ever. in any movie or book. simply beautifully created. I want to be rosie when I grow up.
but in the end, I fell in love with all of them. jojo, who was just so sweet in his ways, how he was convinced hitler was doing the right thing and he was proud to be helping them, but in the end realised that «those jews» are just normal people. the bond he develops with elsa over the course of the movie is so sweet and touching. the way he writes those letters to her «from her boyfriend» who he didn’t know had died. he was trying so hard to make her feel safe and happy even though she was «the enemy». that said a lot about him and roman brings him across so well.
and elsa, the jewish girl, played by thomasin mckenzie, wasn’t just intent on playing the victim. she was funny, sarcastic and clever, giving the most absurd answers to jojo’s questions on his quest to figure out more about jews. it made me laugh even though the situation wasn’t funny at all. it took some of the weight from the topic which I thought was great.
honestly, this film has it all. a great story, great morals, phenomenal acting, funny moments, heartbreaking moments, beautiful cinematography, and it will definitely leave you thinking after the end credits.
---
why it stayed with me:
the whole movie is such an emotional rollercoaster. it’s funny, it’s really sad, really intense, but then in the end… there is so much hope.
the way taika waititi managed to tell a gruesome story in such a poignant way, you just can’t help but love what he’s done. I hate slapstick usually, especially about sensitive topics (like, I would rather die than watch borat which I turned off 15mins into the film), but this was done so well and with so much heart and soul.
---
favourite scene / moment:
the dinner scene with jojo and rosie. iconic. (39:40–44:00)
and when elsa and jojo are staring out the window at night and having a really sweet conversation.
---
what I didn’t like:
nothing. it was perfect. although I HATED the fact that rosie died but I guess it was bound to happen.
---
interesting trivia / fun facts:
both taika waititi and scarlett johansson have jewish roots. when taika, who is maori/jewish, was asked about why he chose to play the role of adolf hitler, he said «the answer's simple, what better 'fuck you' to the guy?»
one of taika’s reasons for making the film was the realisation that after world war II people cried that «we should never forget» but given the behaviour of «certain people in certain parts of the world», it felt to him like we are forgetting.
even though the spoken dialogue is all in english, all written or printed text in the movie is in german.
«I don't like the idea of seeing people hang,» taika waititi said, and that's what led in part to the reveal of rosie's death without showing her face. he added that seeing your dead loved one is an intimate thing, and that we didn't «have permission» to see what jojo saw.
in the scene where the boys burn books at the camp, tom waits’ «I don’t wanna grow up» is playing in the background. in 2009, scarlett johansson recorded an album with tom waits covers, which also features that same song. the album is called «anywhere I lay my head» and is available on spotify.
---
favourite quotes:
[rosie and jojo come upon six people hanging from the gallows in the town square]
jojo: what did they do?
rosie: what they could.
---
rating: 10/10.
this movie broke my goddamn heart and it had the audacity to do so while I was having a really fun time watching it!
simply a must-see.

MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, 2011
synopsis: haunted by painful memories and increasing paranoia, a damaged young woman struggles to re-assimilate with her family after fleeing an abusive cult.
director: sean durkin writers: sean durkin stars: elizabeth olsen, sarah paulson, john hawkes
genres: drama | mystery | thriller
country: usa language: english filming locations: new york, usa
runtime: 102mins
---
overall opinion:
oh lord. where do I start.
I watched this one because it is said to have been elizabeth olsen’s breakthrough role. I grew up adoring her sisters so of course I was absolutely pumped when she first started to appear in movies. after she joined the mcu I finally decided to also dig into some of her lesser known movies, as I do sometimes when I adore an actor’s work. it’s a great way to watch movies you normally wouldn’t necessarily check out.
to make this short and sweet: «martha marcy may marlene» broke my heart clean in half. it disturbed me and made me so sad I had to watch it multiple times over the course of a few days to recover from it.
the story follows martha (elizabeth olsen), a young woman, who has just escaped from an abusive cult and calls her older sister (sarah paulson) because she has no one else to reach out to. while living with her sister and her sister’s husband she slowly tries to readapt to «normal» life. while this happens, the movie keeps flashing back to life amidst the cult. how she got into it, how they broke her, and each and every flashback explains her difficulties in the now more and more until you get the full picture. the longer she is with her sister, the more paranoid she becomes that the people from the cult are after her, leading to panic attacks and ptsd.
elizabeth is absolutely phenomenal in her role as martha. heartbreaking and convincing, she guides her character through trauma and a try at recovery.
the music, ever unnerving and perfectly timed, adds so much eeriness to the movie, it’s one of those that you won’t forget for ages after it’s over.
---
SPOILERS AHEAD
I would invite you to watch the movie first and then come back for the rest if it’s something that interests you. :)
---
why it stayed with me:
it ripped my heart out and shattered it into a million pieces. rarely a movie evokes such a strong feeling that I can barely deal with it. this is why I had to rewatch it several times. this will always be in my top 10 indie productions.
---
favourite scene / moment:
the party when she has the panic attack. elizabeth plays it so breathtakingly well and it shows the mental state of martha despite learning to readapt. it’s heartbreaking to see.
---
what I didn’t like:
nothing. other than the fact that I will never recover from it.
---
interesting trivia / fun facts:
this movie was shot in 20 days.
the title «martha marcy may marlene» comes from the names elizabeth olsen’s character takes on throughout the movie, with martha being her real name, marcy may the name the cult gave to her, and marlene being the name all the women in the cult need to use to answer the phone.
---
favourite quotes:
no quotes, just all the ways martha completely forgot how society works. made me so sad, she was so innocent in a confused way.
---
rating: 10/10.

UNDER THE SKIN, 2013
synopsis: a mysterious young woman seduces lonely men in the evening hours in scotland. however, events lead her to begin a process of self-discovery.
director: jonathan glazer writers: walter campbell, jonathan glazer, based on the novel by michel faber stars: scarlett johansson, jeremy mcwilliams, adam pearson
genres: drama | horror | sci-fi | thriller
country: uk language: english filming locations: scotland, england
runtime: 108mins
---
overall opinion:
this movie caught me completely off guard. and it took me way too long to finally check it out. now, I love me some good indie movies but the «problem» with indies is that because they aren’t hyped and reviewed 10,000 times over, it’s up to you to take the risk with those you feel like could maybe be good / interesting. and the synopsis just did sound a little too weird even for my taste.
so two days ago I finally watched it. and it stayed with me so long, I watched it again 24 hours later.
I must say in the beginning I had no idea what this was going to be and my enthusiasm was limited. there was virtually no dialogue (I believe the first words are spoken around the 13min mark and it barely counts as dialogue). the main character, who remains nameless throughout the movie, barely does anything worth mentioning at all. and yet, I was captivated. I found myself completely ignoring my phone (which is usually in my hand while watching tv) because there was no dialogue and everything that happened was visual. it was a very unique experience, and the way scarlett johansson managed to bring the character across, seeing our world from alien eyes, still gives me goosebumps.
you see, while the story / plot sounds extremely weird, the plot is not even important here. what this movie is trying to do is give you an experience. it’s visually stunning, and the eery feeling you have watching scarlett guide her alien character through this human experience stays with you long after the movie is over. at least that’s what it was like for me.
a little tip: I would encourage you to watch the movie twice. once without any sort of information (to get that «wtf feeling»), and then again after reading up on it (and maybe my review). believe me, it wasn’t until I watched it with all that background knowledge that I started to realise why I liked it so much, and it gave me a completely different layer of appreciation for it.
---
if you have not seen it, I would invite you to stop reading here and come back once you have as the following paragraphs will contain spoilers (my thoughts to major plot points) and I would hate to influence any sort of experience you might have watching it.
---
now, I might be slightly biased here because I love scarlett, but she completely made this movie. the way she manages to portray that alien person, her face utterly emotionless, her body language not giving anything away, was simply stunning. there are multiple long shots of her just staring into the distance (or at her own face in a mirror), utterly expressionless. and while a lot of people might say portraying no emotions is not as hard as portraying fake ones, I believe that replacing or covering a real emotion with a different one is much easier to accomplish than completely wiping your face off anything that makes you human.
the most fascinating part, for me, was the nude scene (yes, there is a nude scene). and people who haven’t seen the movie would probably be like: DAMN, HOW SEXY. NAKED SCARLETT JOHANSSON. yeah, no. the thing with that scene was, and that’s why it was one of my favourite scenes in the movie, is that scarlett, with her absolutely amazing body (and believe me I’m the first one to be absolutely jealous of it because she is gorgeous), manages to make the scene devoid of anything sexual. you see, in that moment, she is an alien figure for the first time starting to feel human. and that prompts her to explore her humanity – her body, her shell, that is still so foreign to her. we know from a few minutes earlier in the movie that she can’t eat (she tries to eat a piece of cake and then chokes and spits it out), so there are likely no bodily functions going on. so standing in front of that mirror, completely naked, she is exploring it for the first time. there are lots of very close shots of pretty private parts, and yet still… it is absolutely not sexual in any way. it’s very matter-of-fact, exactly as a strange entity would view our body seeing it for the first time.
it is not until she actually decides to have sex with a man that she discovers that she is in fact, not as human as she was feeling. and I think it’s at this point that she realises that she just does not fit in – no matter how much she wants to. she is not human.
confused and probably the closest she’d get to sad, she flees into the woods where the final scenes take place which for me, with all the rest of the movie already giving me an eery feeling, were the worst. I HATE rape scenes, even attempted ones, especially when it happens to someone I care about (even when it’s acting). seeing favourite people / actors in situations like that spikes my anxiety. it was brutal, and scarlett’s face absolutely killed me. like, thinking about it makes me weepy.
so I had very mixed feelings about that final encounter but in a way, it made sense. she went from predator to prey, thus completing her transition into a human woman. because in a very twisted (and in our society sadly still accurate) way, she experienced what it was like to be a human woman alone in the woods. the most ironic part was that, since we already discovered that she couldn’t physically have sex, he would have probably fled once he realised that. but her fighting back (which again, probably was human instinct after all), caused the skin / disguise to rip and him to see what or who she truly was, prompting him to burn her alive.

why it stayed with me:
I think the reason why I kept staring at the tv for minutes after it faded to black, and why I barely slept that night, and why I got this eery, haunting feeling is because in the weirdest way I related to the character a lot. I have spent the biggest part of my life feeling alienated, not fitting in no matter how hard I wanted to. it’s a feeling that will stay with me forever. I now have friends and I feel like I’m doing okay in london, but seeing movies with outcasts as characters always bring be back to that feeling of emptiness and loneliness. it’s very hard to describe and probably sounds crazy. I had similar reactions to lisbeth sanders in «the girl with the dragon tattoo» or martha in «martha marcy may marlene». feeling detached from people, misunderstood, alone – I feel those things in my bones whenever I’m reminded of them. movies that focus on those characters tend to trigger that feeling, leaving me feeling empty for at least a few hours after.

favourite scene / moment:
the nude scene, and not because scarlett was completely naked but because of what I said earlier – the way she managed to completely show a close-up of her body without making it sexual in any way.
---
what I didn’t like:
honestly, I don’t know. maybe the only piece of criticism I can offer is that there was little plot, but even that isn’t really true. there was a lot of plot if you paid attention.

interesting trivia / fun facts:
a lot of the movie (and almost all dialogue) was unscripted. the scenes where she is walking through glasgow or driving in her van were filmed with hidden cameras, the people in the shots only informed after it had been filmed to get the okay to use the material. those were people’s genuine reactions (for example when scarlett fell, or when she spit out the cake). the men she talks to from inside her van were random passers-by. after I learned that I rewatched the movie and it added so much to the experience from an acting standpoint.
and I just kept thinking, damn scarlett is fucking brave. not only did she show her entire body in a very exposing way, but she behaved like this alien figure in public and did things considered embarrassing or even rude without anyone knowing it was for a movie (her fall even made it into a viral meme because a paparazzo thought she was just out and about as herself and took a dive). that takes a huge amount of balls. forget hollywood blockbustery – to me, this is real fucking acting.
also, the movie was at least 4 or 5 years in the making, and scarlett and jonathan mainly developed the story and everything after they started shooting.
