incredibly yuri experiences at the skate park today oh my god.
I went and hung out with her for like 3-4 hours
she kept putting grass on me in a playful manner and moved closer to me to lean her elbow on my knee and her shoulder on my shoulder just to show me a video of her falling on the skateboard LOL.
she also actually didn't even have to move closer to me to show me the video because she was already sitting next to me close enough that she could have just showed me but no she had to move right up next to me and lean on me as if it's the most natural thing in the god damn world. and didn't move back after she finished showing the video.
she also. literally put a handful of grass knots in my hand and gently closed my fingers around it with her hand while saying "it's a gift for you"... gay ass
and because I changed my nails up again she was admiring them AND GENTLY HOLDING THEM TO LOOK AT THEM LIKE???????
another valuable scientific observation gained from this experience: another friend of hers was there and she did not once put grass on them or make any type of physical contact. mounting evidence that she is treating me differently than any other friend of hers.

KYIV, Ukraine —
Ukraine’s former top law enforcement official says he repeatedly rebuffed demands by President Trump’s personal lawyer to investigate Joe Biden and his son, insisting he had seen no evidence of wrongdoing that he could pursue.
In an interview, Yuri Lutsenko said while he was Ukraine’s prosecutor general he told Rudolph W. Giuliani that he would be happy to cooperate if the FBI or other U.S. authorities began their own investigation of the former vice president and his son Hunter but insisted they had not broken any Ukrainian laws to his knowledge.
Lutsenko, who was fired as prosecutor general last month, said he had urged Giuliani to launch a U.S. inquiry and go to court if he had any evidence but not to use Ukraine to conduct a political vendetta that could affect the U.S. election.
“I said, ‘Let’s put this through prosecutors, not through presidents,’ ” Lutsenko told The Times.
“I told him I could not start an investigation just for the interests of an American official,” he said.
The revelations are at the heart of the House impeachment inquiry into whether Trump improperly delayed congressionally mandated military aid to Ukraine while urging leaders there to help find dirt on his political opponents to boost his 2020 reelection bid.
Lutsenko said he met Giuliani twice in person and had numerous conversations with him on the phone. He described the former New York mayor as obsessed with possible misconduct by Biden or his son Hunter.
Both Bidens have denied any wrongdoing, and no evidence has emerged to suggest they broke U.S. laws.
Lutsenko said he told Giuliani that Hunter Biden’s position on the board of Ukraine’s largest natural gas company, Burisma Holdings, while his father was involved in steering Obama administration policy toward Ukraine “could be signs of a conflict of interest” but was not illegal.
Lutsenko’s account is controversial since he is believed to have been one of the original promoters behind the unsubstantiated allegations against Biden. He also complained about Marie Yovanovitch, the U.S. ambassador to Kyiv who was recalled in May, weeks before her tenure was up.
Yovanovitch had pushed Ukraine’s government to more aggressively crack down on corruption. But the White House considered her insufficiently loyal to Trump, apparently because she resisted pressuring Ukraine on his priorities, and she became a target of conservative critics, including Giuliani.
House investigators have scheduled a deposition with Yovanovitch and four other senior State Department officials as part of the impeachment inquiry.
Among the group is Kurt Volker, who resigned as special U.S. envoy to Ukraine on Friday after the whistleblower account alleged he had helped set up some of Giuliani’s meetings with Ukrainian officials.
Lutsenko said he was eager to cooperate with Giuliani and Trump but did not have sufficient evidence to act on his own.
The former prosecutor said Giuliani dropped the Biden requests at some point last year but apparently saw a new opportunity with the election in April of Volodymyr Zelensky, a former actor and political neophyte who defeated incumbent President Petro Poroshenko.
Lutsenko said Giuliani again began contacting him to sound him out about the new president and gauge whether Zelensky might be more cooperative in going after Democrats. But Lutsenko did not keep his job and was fired in August.
On July 25, Trump spoke to Zelensky by telephone from the White House. According to a declassified memorandum released by the White House last week that reconstructed the conversation, Trump asked Zelensky for a “favor” and urged him to “look into” Biden and his son.
He linked his comments directly to Zelensky’s request to buy U.S. anti-tank weapons to help counter Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine, and the new president’s hopes of securing a White House meeting.
During the 30-minute call, Trump asked Zelensky at least five times to work with Atty. Gen. William Barr in addition to Giuliani.
“I will have Mr. Giuliani give you a call and I am also going to have Atty. Gen. Barr call and we will get to the bottom of it,” Trump told Zelensky. “I’m sure you will figure it out.”
The Justice Department said last week that Barr was not aware of Trump’s comments at the time and that he had no contact with Ukrainian authorities.
Trump also asked Zelensky to look into CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity company that did work for the Democrats in the 2016 election and was the focus of conspiracy theories. The company is based in Irvine, but Trump apparently believed it operated from Ukraine.
A week before the call, Trump had ordered aides to withhold disbursement of nearly $400 million in military and State Department assistance that Congress had approved for Ukraine. He gave no reason for blocking the aid.
Previously, Trump had bragged about having secured the aid, saying it showed he was more supportive of Ukraine than President Obama had been. The funds and material were finally released this month after Congress was notified of a whistleblower complaint involving Trump’s call to Zelensky.
Giuliani has acknowledged broadly asking Ukraine to investigate the Bidens and defended the move as appropriate. Although he is a private citizen, not a government employee, he has claimed he acted at the State Department’s behest. The State Department has not commented.
“I did not do this on my own, I did it at the request of the State Department — I have a ‘thank you’ from them for doing a good job,” Giuliani said Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” He said Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo “was aware of it.”
Lutsenko, 54, met with The Times at a cafe in downtown Kyiv. He spoke quickly and animatedly in Russian and English, at times contradicting his previous public statements.
He said he met unofficially with Giuliani in New York and in Warsaw last year. Other accounts put the New York meeting earlier this year, but he insisted it was January 2018. The Warsaw meeting was in March, he said.
“I went to his office and was there for several hours over three days,” Lutsenko said. “He was certainly prepared.”
Giuliani quickly raised the issue of the Ukrainian gas company that had hired Hunter Biden. Burisma is run by a Ukrainian oligarch who had been under investigation for tax evasion and lives abroad. But once back taxes were paid, Lutsenko said, the case was shelved.
“He was wondering why the case was closed,” he said. “I had to tell him how law enforcement functions here.”
He said his hands were tied and he could not reopen the case just because Trump wanted it.
Trump has suggested that one of Biden’s misdeeds was to demand the firing of Lutsenko’s predecessor, Viktor Shokin, to prevent him from investigating Hunter Biden.
But U.S. and European officials had demanded Shokin’s ouster as part of a crackdown on widespread corruption in the former Soviet republic.
“The thinking was Ukraine could do a lot more” to fight corruption, David Cameron, the British prime minister at the time, said Sunday on CNN.
Giuliani was scheduled to travel to Kyiv in May but canceled the trip when Democrats raised questions about his activities.
Lutsenko served as prosecutor general from May 2016 until last month, when Zelensky had him replaced. Both men are pivotal characters in the Trump impeachment saga.
Lutsenko has had a checkered career. He spent several years in prison on corruption charges that he claimed were trumped up. He was eventually pardoned.
Rivals have accused him of fomenting the Biden allegations in hopes of winning Trump administration support during the Ukrainian election for Poroshenko, the defeated candidate.
The picture that is emerging of Giuliani’s back-channel diplomacy suggests maneuvering that countered and ultimately undermined official U.S. foreign policy.
The U.S. Congress has voiced bipartisan support for Kyiv in its showdown with neighboring Russia, which seized the Crimea region in 2014 and has backed separatists in an armed insurgency in eastern Ukraine.
Trump has been reluctant to criticize Moscow, and last week, when he met Zelensky on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, the president appeared to startle the Ukrainian leader by urging him to settle his differences with Russia.

karatsu
october 20 & 21, 2018
>> see photosets one and two <<
this past weekend i went to the city of karatsu in saga prefecture!
it was my first weekend trip and i went with my co-alt and another first year alt in my town, g. g and i are both fans of the 2016 anime yuri on ice, and karatsu is the real life inspiration for the series. its also known for its castle and its special kind of pottery called karatsuyaki.
one thing i didn’t realize was how much karatsu now relies on yuri on ice tourism. there are signs everywhere in town at locations featured in the anime. storefronts often have at least one poster. i mentioned yuri on ice to a woman and she immediately smiled a huge, genuine smile. i guess karatsu tourism was declining and yuri on ice actually saved it. the mayor even traveled to tokyo to thank the anime’s creators in person for what they did for karatsu.
which seems wild to me because karatsu is actually absolutely beautiful, and the people there are really nice.
when we arrived we hit the beach near hamasaki station. after that we went further into the city to karatsu station and the yuri on ice tourism center, and then we explored nearby kyomachi shopping arcade. it was around lunchtime so we visited tea and space kikouan, which is a little cafe right next to our ryokan and near the castle. at the ryokan the owners had a yuri on ice shrine set up with posters and a book for visitors to draw in. they even had a russian olympic jacket. our room had an ocean view!
after we got settled and took a breather, we headed back toward the castle and oh boi there are SO MANY STAIRS. but the view alone was worth the climb! later that night we visited kagamiyama onsen for their famous katsudon, which is pork cutlet bowl. it was so good! i don’t think anything will ever be able to match it, and the onsen was beautiful! they had a lot of yuri on ice merchandise there as well.
finally we visited a little snackbar that was tucked away near karatsu station. the couple that ran it actually made all of the snacks! they didn’t speak english and we barely spoke any japanese, but we still managed to become friends. we stayed for ages because they were so much fun, and their snacks were really good!
on the second day we visited hikiyama exhibition hall, which is where they keep the floats used in karatsu kunchi festival. then we visited karatsu-jinja, which is a beautiful shrine near the exhibition hall, and ate karatsu burger!
all in all it was a busy but successful weekend trip and i fell in love with the little seaside city.

5 Questions with Vegas Tenold, Author of Everything You Love Will Burn
Tumblr media
Vegas Tenold is the author of Everything You Love Will Burn: Inside the Rebirth of White Nationalism in America, published by Nation Books. He discusses his book at City Lights Bookstore on Thursday, March 8th, 2018.
City Lights: If you’ve been to City Lights before, what’s your memory of the visit? If you haven’t been here before, what are you expecting?
Vegas Tenold: The first time I went to City Lights was probably a decade or so ago, and although I was almost 30 years old at the time and much too old for such pretentious douchebaggery, I sat at the bar [at Vesuvio Cafe], ordered a margarita—because I’d read somewhere that it was Kerouac’s favorite drink—lit a cigarette, which almost made me fall off the chair because I don’t smoke but wished I did because it seemed like the “Beat” thing to do, and read a book that I don’t remember. Probably Howl or something by Gregory Corso. I’m not poo-pooing Ginsberg or Corso in any way, but what kind of pretentious asshole does a thing like that? Ugh. While the memory of what an exhausting shit I must have been still makes me cringe, the visit itself stands out as one of my favorite moments at a bookstore, topped only by the time I interrupted a live BBC interview inside Shakespeare & Co. in Paris by barging in and urgently asking for the facilities.
CL: What’s the first book you read & what are you reading right now?
VT: The first books I remember really loving were the Little Vampire books, by Angela Sommer Bodenburg. The Narnia books were also an early love. I got into fantasy at an early age, particularly the trashy end of the spectrum because I could buy them with whatever money I had and many of them had variations of sexy trolls/aliens/elves on the cover. Irresistible stuff for an adolescent boy who spent his weekends role-playing. I remember a series by an author called Robert Asprin. Hardly Nebula-Award winners, but they had a green-skinned character named Tanda or something that I had a crush on.
At the moment I’m switching between This Nonviolent Stuff’ll Get You Killed: How Guns Made the Civil Rights Movement Possible, by Charles E. Cobb Jr, The House of Government: A Saga of the Russian Revolution, by Yuri Slezkine and 1984, by George Orwell. I’m re-reading the latter because I plan on tweeting about all the similarities between the book and our current society in a way that not only completely misreads the book but also profoundly misunderstands our current world.
CL: Which 3 books would you never part with?
VT: The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien, The Neverending Story by Michael Ende and Imperium by Ryszard Kapuściński.
CL: If you opened a bookstore tomorrow, where would it be located, what would it be called, and what would your bestseller be?
VT: The bookstore I would open actually existed until recently. It was the much-loved Left Bank Books in the West Village in New York. It was one of those wonderfully dusty rare-book places, much like the shop Bastian flees into in the beginning of Neverending Story, where the curmudgeonly owner would only reluctantly help those he deigned worthy, and once called me an idiot for asking about a first edition Gatsby.
I’m no good at marketing so I think it would make sense for me to piggyback on someone else when it came to naming the thing. Maybe Apple Store could be a good name for a bookshop? Apple did all this marketing legwork so I don’t see why they’re the only ones who should benefit from it.
And I’m a hoarder when it comes to books, so ideally no one would ever buy anything.

fic: sixty impossible things
The saga continues...
Summary: Two weeks after his disastrous last place finish at Sochi, Yuuri receives a text from a mysterious number asking why the fuck he’s ignoring Viktor. So begins Yuri Plisetsky’s all out campaign to get Yuuri to text Viktor the fuck back and end the torment of watching a pining Viktor pine.
In this chapter: Breathing out slow, Yuuri stands and moves in view of the gate. He could do this. He could do this.
He can’t do this. He isn’t dressed right. Why hadn’t he worn something nicer? Like his suit. Phichit had made him pack his suit, visions of banquets and the accompanying photos dancing through his head. Why hadn’t he worn that? Or brought something. He should have brought a gift for Viktor. Like flowers. Flowers were romantic, and this is romantic. Phichit had said that it was. So Yuuri needs flowers. Did they even sell flowers in an airport? Did Viktor even like flowers? Everyone said that he did, but as Yuuri had discovered more and more the past month, what everyone said about Viktor and what was actually true often differed wildly. Maybe Viktor hated flowers. Maybe he liked pine cones instead. Or tea. Yuuri knows that he likes tea. Viktor had told Yuuri that he likes tea. Yuuri had seen him drinking tea on more than one occasion during their Skype calls. Yuuri should have brought some tea.
He’s just about ready to bolt for the nearest cafe to buy all the tea that he can carry when the passengers begin to trickle out from the gate.
First part found here on AO3. Latest part (part six) found here.

Saga on Ice - Yuri on Ice Karatsu Tourism Collaboration
Saga on Ice is a special tourism collaboration held by the city of Karatsu in Saga Prefecture, as Karatsu was used as the model for Hasetsu, Yuri’s home town in Yuri on Ice. Saga prefecture is right next to me(I live in northern Fukuoka), and although I’ve been to Saga city I’ve never been to Karatsu. I’ve always been meaning to explore Kyushu some more given how much time I’ve spent living here, and given that this event was going on over Golden Week and @hideoutfromreality was visiting I figured it was a good chance.
What I knew: The Karatsu tourism organization are really excited about Karatsu being featured in an anime and want to take advantage of it with some limited merch. What I didn’t know: The Karatsu tourism organisation are really, really excited about this and kinda went all out lmao. I was surprised at how much they did to attract YOI fans to the place.
Anyway, I bought a little Viktor with me, so here’s my photo report of the things we saw.
Tumblr media
First here are some pics of the pretty scenery on the way to Karatsu from Fukuoka. The train runs along the Kyushu coast and is extremely beautiful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey, what’s that in the distance?
Tumblr media
It’s kinda hard to make out here, but its in the middle. We’ll see it again later.. Anyway, the train soon pulls into Karatsu station and when we walk down the steps this is the first thing we see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They also had this poster up, the one used in-show to advertise ‘’Onsen on Ice’, the Yuri/Yuri showdown. I thought it was just in the station but it was actually all over the town, stuck on multiple buildings and store windows, in much the same way it probably was in the show itself. It made me laugh every time I saw it.
Tumblr media
When you go through the gates you are greeted by these three in front of the Tourist Information Centre.
Tumblr media
Um excuse me? Where’s the best boy?
Tumblr media
It’s okay guys I found him.  All this art was specially drawn for the tourism collab. Makkachin is wearing the same helmet that the actual Karatsu mascot wears.
Tumblr media
These flags were used out the front of restaurants/cafes/businesses that were participating in the campaign. there were...a lot of these.
Tumblr media
(yurio never looks like he wants to be there lol)
Some merch/ You might notice Choromatsu is there. This is because a while ago Karatsu also had an Osomatsu-san tourism collab, and I have no idea why. I assume that it’s a mix of a) Karatsu sounding similar to Karamatsu and b) Osomatsu-san is apparently required by law to be everywhere in Japan at once c)Karatsu’s tourism agency will take what they can get to attract tourists. Anyway, there’s still left over merch from that, and most of it is Choromatsu, so every now and then I’d see him looking all sad and miserable next to the YOI stuff, and it made me laugh.
Tumblr media
(The YOI merch above are tea cakes I believe) More merch;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought it was funny that they included those generic poodle plushies despite them not being official merch. The sign even says ‘Makkachin-ish plush”.
Tumblr media
Heading outside the station, here’s the statue Yurio found so creepy.
Tumblr media
And here’s the shopping arcade Yurio pitched a fit in.
Tumblr media
They really want you to know that, too.
Tumblr media
Here’s one of the participating cafes, you can see the flag out the front. All the participating eateries (and again there were HEAPS) had just one YOI-themed menu item. Most didn’t have a lot to do with the characters they were attributed to, but the point was to promote Karatsu specialities. We didn’t want to even bother trying to go to every cafe, just as long as we got katsudon and piroshki. (unfortunately the cafe doing the piroshki had completely sold out of their batch when we visited and weren’t due to restock for hours) Anyway, I can’t remember what this place had, I think it might have been the JJ baked curry.
Tumblr media
Karatsu is a really pretty seaside town - the air is really salty and smelled nice, and it reminded me somewhat of Coffs Harbour in NSW.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What’s that in the distance #2
Tumblr media
Here’s the beach! Viktor and Yuri had a heart-to-heart here.
Tumblr media
What’s that in the distance #3? I’m sure it’s obvious now, and that’s where we headed next.
Tumblr media
But to get there we have to get up the hill. You can walk up the steps, or you can get the elevator here.
Tumblr media
The elevator moved diagonally, and Skins found this so incredible she took a video of it. Here’s the amazing view from the top!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These guys are enjoying the view too.
Tumblr media
“hey guys its your pal Karawan-kun, you know, the actual mascot of Karatsu, please dont forget me’‘
Tumblr media
Karawan-kun is beckoning us into the gift store, which contained a lot of Karatsu souvenirs and also more of the YOI merch. Plus!
Tumblr media
A signed poster! Photos were invited.
Tumblr media
Apparently one of Karatsu’s products is colourful gum molded into animals and various other things, and they were selling a Makkachin version.
Tumblr media
I wanted to get at least one of the collab items to commemorate the experience so I got a lil Makkachin keyring. They only had the one size bag though, which was kinda funny...
Tumblr media
Anyway, if you haven’t figured out what’s up on this hill yet...
Tumblr media
viktor voice: HASETSU CASTLE!!!
Tumblr media
HASHTAG: NINJA!!!
Tumblr media
“REALLY!? NINJA!?’‘ Anyway I’m not sure if you’re able to go into the castle but it didn’t seem you could at the moment. It looks like there are actually repairs being done there. This is also where the stairs Yuri does training on are. (They’re also the stairs we could have taken up instead of getting the elevator. We took the stairs on the way down though.)
Tumblr media
These people here were also here for the event. I could tell because they were carrying maps, had merch with them and I also heard them talking about Yuri’s training montages. Actually, a good deal of the people here were YOI fans, they weren’t exactly hard to spot. Anyway before we go down, the wisteria.
Tumblr media
Looking up the staircase from below:
Tumblr media
We decided to catch the bus here cos it was getting really hot, but we got to see a lot of the town from the window. Here is the bridge that Yuri flails across on multiple occasions.
Tumblr media
Fun fact: I missed getting a photo but a group of three girls, one of whom was carrying the Makkachin-shaped plushie tissue holder that Viktor has, were trying to imitate Yuri’s run when we went past...
Tumblr media
(I took that pic earlier, but that’s the bridge from the castle)
Our next stop was a little harder to get to as it was outside the main town centre, but it was one of the most interesting. Kagamiyama Onsen!
Tumblr media
Yep! It’s an onsen inn. Whether it’s the actual inn that inspired Yuri’s family’s ‘’Yutopia’’, I dont know, but it was the place serving katsudon for the collab.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A signed pic from Kubo at the counter.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, it turns out that the onsen restaurant had set times for lunch and dinner, and lunch was already over when we got there. Dinner wasn’t going to start for another few hours, and given that we didn’t get to eat anything else that day (due to the piroshki being sold out), we didn’t really wanna wait around for it due to being starving so decided to go somewhere else. It was kinda sad to not be able to have the katsudon, but it wasn’t a waste of time to visit the inn. Because..
There were cosplayers hanging out there! They were very very excited about us being fans and very very happy that we recognised them.
We decided to find somewhere else to eat before we died of hunger and it turned out there was a Hamakatsu right near the inn anyway. It’s not katsudon that comes with a YOI postcard but who cares it’s katsudon, and it was still damn good, and a nice way to end the tour.
Tumblr media
aaaaaay And now for something kinda funny. When I realised that the inn was called Kagamiyama onsen, I was like “huh, that’s weird! So Saga has a Kagami Mountain too!” I’ve been to Kagami Mountain both as a field trip back in 2009 and again with my dad/sister when we went driving around Kyushu once. And for some reason I thought it was in Fukuoka, but...it’s the same damn mountain. I’d already been to Karatsu twice before and had no idea! Kagami mountain is a sacred mountain with a famous shrine (Kagami shrine) up the top, and thus the entrance to the road that leads up the mountain has this giant impressive gate you can see here.
Tumblr media
Anyway, the tourism collab event was a lot of fun and it was a nice excuse to get to see Karatsu (or at least, more of Karatsu, seeing as I’d only seen Kagami Mountain and the beach near it before). The scenic train trip there alone was worth the price, and I’m looking forward to going again (which will be in another 3 weeks). Saga on Ice won’t be running anymore then but I’d still really love to try out some of the cute cafes we passed.
I really like when anime goes out of its way to draw attention to lesser known parts of Japan instead of just setting it in anywheretown, Tokyo. YOI has always been extra special to me for that Kyushu flair.

The Manga Revue: What Are You Reading Edition?
This week, I’m flipping the script and asking you a question: what are you reading? I’m curious which series you’re avidly following and which ones you’ve abandoned, and why. What titles are you recommending to other manga readers? And what titles are you most eagerly anticipating this fall? Join the conversation below!
And speaking of reviews, I have several lined up for the next two weeks, including Slum Wolf, a collection of short stories by alt-manga pioneer Tadao Tsuge; Furari, a lovely, episodic manga by Jiro Taniguchi; and Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction, an alien invasion story with a twist. But don’t worry: it won’t all be Serious Manga! I’m also working on reviews of Go for It, Nakamura!, That Sky Blue Feeling and Chio’s School Road.
In the meantime, here’s a rundown of notable manga reviews and essay from around the web!
Must-Read Manga Reviews
Over at AiPT!, Trevor Richardson posts a fun, thoughtful essay with a title so awesome I hope he presents it at an academic conference some day: “The Queering of an Octopus: Cephalapod Symbolism in Go for It, Nakamura!“  Also of note is Maxy Barnard‘s review of Baki: New Grappler Baki, the second installment of the long-running Baki the Grappler saga, and Remy Fool’s essay on a common yuri manga trope: the tragic best friend.

I scheduled a text message to be sent to sidney tomorrow morning asking if she'd like to hang out and if she says yes then it's quite likely that I'll tell her my feelings (and give her the letter I wrote and the mix cd if it goes well)
