Vid rec - runs in the family (the Untamed)
youtube
I just came across this on YouTube and wow does rhis vid pack a punch. So much family trauma and love, and all twisted together. The editing is fantastic but it takes a few watches to realise how well those shots go with the lyrics.
I love the Lan brothers and their desperate devotion (to anyone who'll have me... fill me up), and the match of Zidian to "we're wonderful folks" for the Jiangs. I love the running section, JGY running for office, and LWJ running for a cause, NHS running from responsibility, and JC running into debt with his new golden core. Its great editing but it takes a few watches to appreciate it.

All this Goncharov renaissance on Tumblr has me nostalgic enough to watch Reservoir Dogs. Harvey Keitel might be missing the Russian accent and the eyepatch, but Mr White has always reminded me of Andrey. An Andrey who made it out of Naples with Goncharov, who got out of Italy with hope instead of heartbreak. An older Andrey who's mellowed with time, who's relaxed his guard without constantly juggling his loyalty to Goncharov with his assigned job.

My #1 post of 2022
You know, Tumblr reactions made episode 6 sound pretty gay, and I disregarded that as background noise because I never got that vibe from Hob in the comics. Then I watched episode 6.
Wow. I was so wrong.
Dream smiled! That felt like watching the gayest romance ever.
For a series with actual queer rep, that episode was gayer than everything else so far.

never going to get over the way that wwx thinks of his younger self the exact same way people think of their 14 y/o selves who were going through their emo phase and making edgy comments about how dark their futures were. like wwx really takes one look at his younger self, who had fought in and nearly singlehandedly won a war as well as inventing demonic cultivation and is the most powerful person in the world, and just immediately goes ew cringe how embarrassing of him so glad i left that behind.

Ficrec! Blind wei wuxian in a world where the sunshot campaign never happened (wen Qing successfully overthrew her evil uncle) wwx and lz meet for the first time at a Jiang discussion conference in their 20s. Very cute.
Bright Enough to Shine
by Dreaming_Days (G, 12k, wangxian)
Summary:  The man was sitting at the edge of the dock, feet dangling into the water. He was humming softly to himself, legs gently swinging. His eyes were closed and a small smile pulled at his lips. He had a sharp jawline and pointy chin and lightly tanned skin that seemed to glow in the light of the sun.
Lan Wangji stared, thinking for a moment that he was looking at some kind of water nymph.
Beautiful.
He shook off the thought and glanced around, realizing that his walk may have taken him to the private residences of the Jiang Clan. He considered just leaving, looking to avoid disturbing the man.
But then, the man suddenly stopped humming. He tilted his head as if listening for something.
“Wow,” the man said, turning around. He opened his eyes and Lan Wangji was struck at the sight of the light gray, almost silvery eyes.
“You’re beautiful.” ----------- Or, Lan Wangji goes to Lotus Pier for a discussion conference and meets someone who quickly becomes special to him. Over the course of 5 meetings, he falls in love.
Edit-now with A-Yuan!

Ficrec! Yunmeng bro reconciliation. Love Nie Huaisang in this! Basically, Jiang Cheng learns the truth about what happened 5years into the "13 years" timeskip, based off of the live action timeline. Part 1 of a series.

by LtLJ (G, 10k, jiang cheng & wei wuxian)

Hi! I don't know if you're accepting recs but if you are, I read a Wen Ning/Jiang Cheng fic (background Wei Ying/Lan Zhan and Wen Qing/Mianmian) and I was wondering if you'd enjoy it?
the properties of bismuth
by myung (G, 4k, chengning)
Summary:  “You’re overthinking this,” Wei Ying says.
He slurps obnoxiously on his 130% sugar light ice cheese foam lychee jasmine fruit tea with pearls and extra coconut jelly, an order that Jiang Cheng is convinced he came up with just to make every Gong Cha employee tremble in fear at the sight of him.
“Wen Ning doesn’t hate anyone. He only holds the emotional capacity to love. It’s, like, programmed into him.”
Jiang Cheng starts to like Wen Ning. The problem is that Wen Ning is obviously in love with Jiang Cheng's brother.

I saw a fanfic that was a under the MDZS novel tag that was donghua fix-it because apparently the donghua ending ruined WWX's character and that he just became a submissive puppet for LWJ to use. So of course the way to fix-it is for WWX to end up with JC and realize all his mistakes and apologize to JC. I honestly don't think I've seen a worse take than that one.
Like write whatever you want I can click out of a tab, but at least tag shit appropriately. If it follows the donghua and not the novel than tag it as the donghua and not the novel. I'm getting so tired of this fandom not tagging stuff appropriately. It makes avoiding stuff harder and the people who actually want to read stuff like that can't find it.
I mean the donghua remixed it a bit but they definitely captured the spirit of the novel in the finale: Wei Wuxian decisively going his separate way from jc, leaving him in his past, and happily walking off into the sunset with Lan Wangji… Also do people not understand WWX WANTS to be with LWJ. To be around Lan Wangji and spend time with him? It's pretty obvious from the start, and for them it's healthy. They're literally just doing exactly what they want. They've been apart long enough. Hell WWX was dead for 13 years he doesn't want anymore alone time. Like they think WWX would want to be away from Lan Wangji!?!?! THIS GUY:
After walking for a bit, Wei Wuxian unintentionally glanced behind him. He had thrown off Lan Wangji, and now the man was a great distance behind him, still standing where he originally stood, gazing in his direction.
Wei Wuxian’s steps involuntarily slowed. He didn’t know why, but he had a faint feeling within his heart that he shouldn’t have walked so fast and abandoned Lan Wangji so far behind him. (Chapter 20)
This guy?
“… Fine. These children understood the essence. Someone acting as Lan WangJi should indeed shut his mouth and stay silent! Out of the blue, Wei WuXian’s lips curled upward again. The poisonous needle had been pulled out, tossed into some random corner. All of the pain had been instantly wiped away. Wei WuXian murmured to himself, “How strange. Why can someone as boring as him always make me so happy?” (Chapter 32)
This guy?!! :
"He didn’t know why, but suddenly, he very, very much wanted to see Lan Wangji’s face.
“Senior Mo, Senior Mo!”
“Hm?” Wei Wuxian’s attention finally returned to the present." (Chapter 35)
THIS GUY?!! :
The current Lan WangJi still had some naivety at the edges, but the cold expression that kept everyone at arm’s length was the same. Wei WuXian’s gaze stuck to his face at once, unable to be move away no matter what.
Regardless of whether or not he could hear it, Wei WuXian shouted happily, “Lan Zhan! I miss you so much! Hahahahahahaha!” (Chapter 49)
This guy>!
“He was going to find a place beautiful though sparsely populated and build a large house there. He could build one for Lan WangJi next to him as well. (Chapter 67)
This guy??:
“But after tonight, maybe he and Lan WangJi wouldn’t go back to how they were ever again. Without Lan WangJi, it seemed as if it wasn’t too impossible for him to roam the world on his own.
But a voice in Wei WuXian’s heart told him with clarity, No, you can’t. The words he said back on Koi Tower really proved to be true. The current Wei WuXian couldn’t do without Lan WangJi.” (Chapter 97)
This guy?!!!! :
“Lan WangJi was now the only one who stood by his side. Luckily, Lan WangJi was also the only one he wished to have by his side.” (Chapter 111)

Hi! So first of all I want to clarify that I'm not in any way saying jc isn't a homophobe, because I mean, it's pretty obvious. However back when I read the mxtx interview I read her answer as 'wwx acted all of a sudden very different with lwj, to the point where it was jarring for jc who had not seen him act that way before.' I do not think jc understood at all wwx's affections towards lwj, and this did not think it was disgusting because he saw it as flirting. (1/2)
I find it weird that people use it as a 'proof' that jc is homophobic when it's not straightforwardly telling us it's homophobia, and also since you know, the novel is right there and tells us far more clearly that jc is, in fact, a homophobe. (2/2)
So, here, I agree the interview isn't a stated full explanation in itself and not to be used as evidence alone.
I think that at the time it was not fully homophobia on his part when he had first noticed Wei Wuxian's attention for Lan Wangji in Cloud Recesses. Jiang Cheng had never understood Wei Wuxian's penchant for wanting to be around Lan Wangji and I think that his surprise of Wei Wuxian flirting with a man (He himself talks about how he never thought it odd with Wei Wuxian flirting with women all the time) Lan Wangji was always the strange outlier for flirting. It steadily devolves into more overt homophobia as they get older.
Cloud Recesses when they're 15,
Wei WuXian replied, “Yeah, I also thought that he should be praised for having the courage to come see me. He was probably told by his uncle to come check if I was kneeling properly.”
Jiang Cheng instinctively felt a foreboding sensation, “Were you kneeling properly?”
Wei WuXian, “I was kneeling properly. After he was some distance away, I found a stick and started to dig in the dirt. The pile beside your foot. There’s an ant hole there that I went through tons of trouble to find. When he turned his head, he saw that my shoulders were shaking, and he definitely thought that I was crying. He even came back to ask me. You really should have seen his expression as he saw the ant hole.”
“…” Jiang Cheng spoke, “You should get lost and go back to Yunmeng as soon as possible! I don’t think that he wants to see you ever again.”
The part that sticks out here is the fact that Jiang Cheng feels any sense of foreboding at all for a silly situation that Lan Wangji had walked away from seeing Wei Wuxian was actually okay. It's the first seed of him continuing the line of thought that "He hates you". He is already feeling strange about Wei Wuxian's flirting and chooses to sort of project this hate into Lan Wangji for Wei Wuxian.
Lotus Pier summer after Cloud Recesses lessons:
I just thought of someone.”
Jiang Cheng, “Who?”
Wei WuXian, “Lan Zhan.”
Jiang Cheng, “Why would you think of him for no reason? Reminiscing what it felt like to copy sect rules?”
Wei WuXian spat out a seed, “It’s fun to think of him. You don’t even know—he’s just too amusing. I told him, ‘Your sect’s food is disgusting. I’d rather eat stir-fried watermelon peel than eat your food. If you have time, come have fun with us at Lotus Pier…'”
Before he even finished, Jiang Cheng slapped his watermelon off, “Are you mad? Inviting him to Lotus Pier—are you trying to torture yourself?”
Wei WuXian, “Why are you so upset? My watermelon almost flew away! I was just being polite. Of course he wouldn’t come. Have you ever heard of him go anywhere by himself to have fun?”
Jiang Cheng had on a stern expression, “Let’s make this clear. I don’t want him to come, anyhow. Don’t invite him.”
Wei WuXian, “I never knew you hated him so much?”
Jiang YanLi sat down between the two, “Who are you talking about? A friend you made in Gusu?”
Wei WuXian responded happily, “Yeah!”
Jiang Cheng, “What a shameless ‘friend’ you are. Go ask Lan WangJi and see if he wants you as one.”
Wei WuXian, “Fuck off. If he doesn’t want me, I’ll bother him to the point that he does.” He turned to Jiang YanLi, “Shijie, do you know Lan WangJi?”
Jiang YanLi, “I do. He’s that Lan-er-gongzi whom everyone describes as handsome and talented, isn’t he? Is he really that handsome?”
Wei WuXian, “He is!”
Jiang YanLi, “Compared to you?”
Wei WuXian thought about it for a moment, “Maybe just a bit more handsome than me.”
He formed a tiny bit of space between two fingers. Taking the plate away, Jiang YanLi smiled, “He must be truly very handsome, then. It’s a good thing you made a new friend. In the future, you two can visit each other in your free time.”
Hearing this, Jiang Cheng spat out his watermelon. Wei WuXian waved his hands, “Forget it, forget it. All that’s at his place is bad food and a whole lot of rules. I’m not going again.”
Jiang YanLi, “Then you can bring him here. This is a good opportunity. Why not invite your friend to come stay at Lotus Pier for sometime?”
Jiang Cheng, “Don’t listen to his nonsense, Jie. He’s super annoying in Gusu. Lan WangJi would never want to come home with him.”
Wei WuXian, “What do you mean!? He would.”
Jiang Cheng, “Wake up. Lan WangJi told you to get lost, didn’t you hear? You still remember that?”
Wei WuXian, “What do you know!? Even though he told me to get lost on the surface, I know for sure that he secretly wants to come play with me in Yunmeng—in fact, he would love to.”
Wei Wuxian is still in the belief that Lan Wangji does like him. Jiang Cheng of course isn't amused by Jiang Yanli's indulgence in Wei Wuxian's daydreams. Wei Wuxian continues to, well, essentially pine innocently about Lan Wangji, his fellow disciples even encourage it leading to... Jiang Cheng sulking even further over the fact that Wei Wuxian is in fact pining over another boy. He puts two and two together as Wei Wuxian is flirting with the girls on shore later on and he talks of the things he will do with Lan Wangji as he visits. He talked of training with Lan Wangji in the same way he invited the girls to watch him train.
Phoenix Mountain Hunt
Lan WangJi suddenly raised his hand, stopping a flower tossed over from behind him.
He looked back. Over at the side of the YunmengJiang Sect’s riding formation, which hadn’t departed yet, Jiang Cheng clicked his tongue impatiently, seated at the front. However, the person beside him sat on a horse with black, gleaming hair. His elbow was at the head of the horse as he looked to the side as though nothing happened, talking and laughing with two slender-bodied maidens.
Lan XiChen saw that Lan WangJi had drawn the reins and ceased to move forward, “WangJi, what happened?”
Lan WangJi, “Wei Ying.”
Wei WuXian finally turned around, face full of surprise, “What? HanGuang-Jun, did you call me? What’s up?”
Holding the flower, Lan WangJi seemed to be quite cold. His tone seemed cold as well, “Was it you?”
Wei WuXian immediately denied it, “No, it wasn’t.”
The maidens beside him spoke at once, “Don’t believe him. It was him!”
Wei WuXian, “How could you treat a good person like this? I’m getting angry!”
Giggling, the maidens pulled their reins and went to the formations of their own sects. Lan WangJi lowered the hand that he held the flower with and shook his head. Jiang Cheng spoke, “ZeWu-Jun, HanGuang-Jun, apologies. Don’t pay attention to him.”
Lan XiChen smiled, “That is fine. I will thank Young Master Wei’s kindness behind the flower in place of WangJi.”
When they slowly rode into the distance, carrying with them the clouds of petals and fragrance, Jiang Cheng glanced at the colourful sea of handkerchiefs waving on the watching towers before turning to Wei WuXian, “Why are you throwing out flowers along with the girls?”
Wei WuXian, “I think he looks nice. Can’t I throw a few as well?”
Jiang Cheng pointed his nose into the air, “How old are you? Who do you think you are, still playing tricks like that?”
Interestingly enough, this flower scene is similar to what had once occurred during the summer of Lotus Pier. This is after it had been established that Wei Wuxian thinks Lan Wangji now dislikes him morally. Yet he still reaches out to tease and flirt with him, leading Jiang Cheng to continue asking why well into their early 20's is Wei Wuxian still doing this. It was excusable when they were younger but now this is inexcusable and troublesome for someone who is supposed to be his righthand acting on whims still and flirting with a man of reputation. Jiang Cheng actively had encouraged the rift between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji after the return from the Burial Mounds. He agreed very readily that Lan Wangji wanted to imprison Wei Wuxian instead of extending any help in regards to Wei Wuxian's volatile disposition that went on for years after this altercation, convincing himself and Wei Wuxian of Lan Wangji's supposed hate.
Wei WuXian was in such a state of distress that he couldn’t remember whether or not he called someone’s name at all. He only managed to pull himself together after Jiang Cheng commanded the dog to back away. After a moment of hesitation, he abruptly turned his head away. On the other side, Jiang Cheng left his seat. There was a whip attached beside his waist. With one hand on it, he bent down to look at Wei WuXian’s face. After a pause, he straightened up and asked, “Speaking of it, since when have you been so close to Lan WangJi?”
Wei WuXian immediately understood whose name he had unconsciously called out.
Jiang Cheng smiled menacingly, “It really is quite curious how far he went to protect you, back on Dafan Mountain.”
A moment later, he corrected himself, “No. You weren’t necessarily the one whom Lan WangJi was protecting. After all, the GusuLan Sect couldn’t have forgotten what you did with that loyal dog of yours. How could someone so celebrated for his righteousness tolerate the likes of you? Maybe he’s familiar with this body that you stole instead.”
His words were cruel and sinister. Every sentence seemed well-meaning on the surface, but was actually derogatory. Wei WuXian couldn’t bear hearing it any longer, “Watch your language.”
Thirteen years later his taunts have become more refined as he is well off into hating Lan Wangji himself now that Wei Wuxian had been dead. He taunts that Lan Wangji is more promiscuous than presented as well as using Wei Wuxian's old goodwill for Lan Wangji for him to go on the defense. Jiang Cheng however thinks using the fact these men are gay is only a tool, he does not believe they are as his disgust of Mo Xuanyu being gay does disgust him. His suspicions have turned into bigotry instead finally in the years that Wei Wuxian was gone.
When Jiang Cheng accused him, Wei WuXian couldn’t defend himself at all, but he just couldn’t bear it when those words were being directed at Lan WangJi.
Wei WuXian reprimanded, “Jiang Cheng, just listen to yourself. What are you saying? Is it appropriate? Don’t forget who you are. After all, you’re the leader of a sect. Insulting a renowned cultivator in front of Uncle Jiang and Madam Yu’s spirits—where is your discipline?”
His original intention was to remind Jiang Cheng to at least hold some respect for Lan WangJi. However, Jiang Cheng was always sensitive. From those words, he managed to make out the notion that he wasn’t fit to be a sect leader. Immediately, darkness crawled up his face, bearing an eerie similarity to how Madam Yu looked when she was angry. His voice was harsh, “Who is the one insulting my parents in front of their spirits?! Could you two please understand whose sect you’re in? I don’t care if you act so shamelessly outside, but don’t you dare fool around inside our ancestral hall, before my parents’ spirits! After all, they were the ones who brought you up—even I feel ashamed for you!”
Wei WuXian never expected such a huge blow to crash down on him. He was both shocked and furious, blurting, “Shut up!”
Jiang Cheng pointed outside, “Mess around outside however you want, whether under a tree or on a boat, hugging or otherwise! Get out of my sect, get away from anywhere my eyes can see!”
Hearing him mention ‘under a tree’, Wei WuXian felt his heart skip a beat—could Jiang Cheng have seen the moment where he crashed into Lan WangJi’s arms?
His guess was not wrong. Jiang Cheng did indeed go out to find Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi. He chased after them in the direction that the street vendors pointed at. A voice in his heart seemed to tell him which places Wei WuXian would definitely go. He caught up to them in just a while. Yet, he just so happened to see Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi enveloped in a tight embrace under a tree, unwilling to let go of each other even after so long.
Goosebumps immediately ran down Jiang Cheng’s body.
Although he’d made guesses at the relationship between Mo XuanYu and Lan WangJi before, they were only attacks trying to offend Wei WuXian, not that he really suspected anything. He’d never thought that Wei WuXian would have ambiguous ties with a man, because after all, when they grew up together, Wei WuXian had never expressed any such interest. He’d always loved good-looking girls with a passion. On the other hand, it was even more impossible for Lan WangJi. He was famous for his asceticism, seemingly interested in neither men nor women.
But hugging like that seemed intense no matter what. At least, they didn’t seem like normal friends or brothers. He immediately recalled that Wei WuXian had always stuck to Lan WangJi ever since he came back. Lan WangJi’s attitude towards him was also different from what it was before he was reborn. At once, he was almost certain that the two really were in that kind of relationship. He couldn’t turn around and leave, yet he didn’t want to say a single word to the two, so he continued to hide himself as he followed them. Every single look and movement that passed between them seemed different in his eyes. For a while, the shock, absurdity, and slight disgust that he felt combined to overpower his hatred. It was only after Wei WuXian brought Lan WangJi into the ancestral hall that the long-suppressed hatred was awakened again, devouring his courtesy and rationality.
Wei WuXian was holding something back, “Jiang WanYin, you… apologize right now.”
Jiang Cheng mocked, “Apologize? For what? For exposing your thing for each other?”
Wei WuXian raged, “HanGuang-Jun is only my friend—what do you think we are?! I warn you. Apologize right now—don’t make me beat you!”
Hearing this, Lan WangJi’s expression froze for an instant. Jiang Cheng laughed, “Well, then I’ve never seen “friends” like that before? You warn me? Warn me against what? If you two had the slightest trace of integrity left, you wouldn’t have come here and…”
Seeing the change in Lan WangJi’s expression, Wei WuXian thought he must have felt insulted by Jiang Cheng’s words. He was so angry that his entire body was shaking. He didn’t dare think about what Lan WangJi would think after being shamed like this.
Obviously in the penultimate scene Jiang Cheng himself is being "the unreliable narrator" that fans love to accuse Wei Wuxian of. He says he never expected this of the two, but all the years of his behavior shows that he had always gone out of his way to keep the two away from each other and had always been mildly homophobic when the two did express interest in the other however innocent it had been in their youth.
All of this is to say, when it comes to how MXTX worded that interview answer, I think it was meant as a careful nudge for those who had still tried to insist that Jiang Cheng didn't mean to be homophobic, actually wasn't homophobic and was just angry at any other actions of Wei Wuxian and lashing out about that etc, it was her telling people to simply pay attention to the underlying shadowing of Jiang Cheng and how he exasperated his own pre-existing biases that morphed into an uglier hate.

Fics I read this week!
I started this right after posting the last one, so I’ll hopefully keep it up. A lot of the multichapter fics are ones I subscribed to that finished. A lot of the one-shots are under 5k words, with some being 100-word ficlets.
Finished:
Not Rated:
Wei Changze's weird day, by Weiyingbestboy
Wei Changze was minding his own business, when four potential time travellers dropped out of the sky. Literally.
Serenity Cave, by Anonymous
The travel home had been mostly silent. Lan Zhan and Wei Wuxian competing for who could say the least amount of words.
Then, as they’d been walking along the mountain path, just a little past the gates of Cloud Recesses, a hole suddenly opened up in the ground beneath them and they fell into a small rock cave. Then the hole shrunk until it was barely big enough to poke a sword through. Just enough of a gap that they had a bit of light and wouldn’t suffocate, but definitely too small to escape through.
The earth had swallowed them.
In the middle of an argument, Lan Zhan and Wei Wuxian get trapped in a cave.
In Which Lan Xichen Returns to the World, by AshurbanipalJones
Lan Xichen ends his isolation after the death of Jin Guangyao.
In Which Lan Qiren Requests an Audience, by AshurbanipalJones
Lan Qiren wants to discuss Important Matters with his nephew. His nephew is kinda not having it.
Mercy Meet Vengeance, by ShanaStoryteller (7th in a series)
The first time Wen Qing meets Wei Wuxian, she has a white sash around her waist.
Rated E:
Thirty-three Lashes, by Winglesss (20 chapters)
Yiling Laozu is dead. He's been dead for over a thousand years. For over a thousand years Lan Wangji has been wandering the world alone, helping where he's needed.
It's when he meets a mysterious cultivator and a strange curse starts to torment his body that the past and the present start to mingle, igniting emotions Lan Wangji almost forgot he was able to feel.
curiosity is the beginning, by everyearning (noctiphany)
He's just curious. Wangi's brother always said he had an insatiable thirst for knowledge. He also said it was going to get him in trouble one day.
Rated M:
devil from heaven, by incendir (3 chapters)
He would like to think that he knows what Lan Wangji could enjoy, if he’d let himself do so.
(or, wei wuxian's road to discovering lan wangji's yiling patriarch kink)
in this lifetime, by hauntedotamatone
Lan Wangji must reach him. There is still time. All he has to do is reach him. They’ll take A-Yuan and whoever remains and they’ll go as far and fast as they can. The world is vast, there must be a place for them somewhere, and if there is not, then he will carve one out from nothing if that is what it will take.
“Wei Ying!” he calls out to him over the roar of the flames and the familiar and terrible sounds of battle. At first, he thinks that Wei Ying is ignoring him or otherwise does not hear him. Then, his fingers still over his flute. He looks up with those empty eyes, unseeing. There is no hatred in them, but there is no affection or recognition either. There is nothing at all.
Lan Wangji has a terrible nightmare for the first time in years. For the first time in years, he does not wake up alone.
We Are Family, by Duochanfan (13 chapters)
Jiang Yanli heard the words spewing from Jin Zixun's mouth and said enough. After putting the man in his place she leaves the Hunt with her brother and Lan Wangji. The three come across Wen Qing, and with that simple meeting, they change what could have happened to something else entirely.
until it's time to see the light, I'll make my own with you each night, by backbones
His husband would never go back to sleep if he sensed something was wrong, and he always did. He knew him better than he knew himself, sometimes, and maybe that was why that feeling was so foreign it was horrifying. He wanted to keep that part of himself close, a well-kept secret, and now, deep down, he knew it was too late for that.
Or: After having a nightmare in a deep sleep, Wei Wuxian has a surprise visit from an old childhood habit.
Rated T:
Wei Wuxian Discovers Bisexuality, by arcaladiwoompa

Rescue, by WithBroomBefore (6 chapters)
Post-Sunshot fix-it AU featuring Jiang siblings taking care of each other, among other things.
Over the Rotted Bridge, by vailkagami (41 chapters)

The world is not on his side in this. It is not on either of their sides when he succeeds. But The World is not all of its people, and some things can always be salvaged from the ruins.
Across, by vailkagami
An epilogue to the story "Over the Rotted Bridge", set in the far future. Cannot stand alone.
Centuries after the fall of the cultivation world, Wei Wuxian and Wangji return to the burial mounds for the last time.
Completion, by youjezebel
Lan Wangji misses raising A-Yuan. Wei Wuxian wants to be a father. In the end, everything works out perfectly.
Second Nephew, by vividneonmanias
"You need to stop talking to Wàngjī," Lan Xīchén told him, in the uncannily stern tones of a Sect Leader and not a nephew; "and preferably stop talking about him, if you cannot control yourself."
In the years following Wèi Wúxiàn's death, Lán Qǐrén learns to hold his tongue. But he still wants to know his second nephew. Some things need to be said; some questions need to be asked.
oceans, drowned in starfire, by stiltonbasket (10 chapters)
Lan Wangji breathes.
There is a tattered red ribbon trailing through the water beside him, and below him, a crooning, echoing song that clears his mind and stops him from struggling against the waves.
Lan Wangji breathes, and sleeps, and wakes again.
When he opens his eyes on the beach to find Huan-ge and Shufu crying over his body, he hears a lifeguard say that he was underwater for almost half an hour. ___
Tired of life in the business world, Lan Wangji returns to his mother’s old house to pursue a career as a novelist and search for the mysterious fisherman who rescued him after he nearly drowned on a whale-watching trip twenty years ago.
He wasn’t expecting much more than a quiet refuge to serve as inspiration for his work, and restore his spirits after half a lifetime spent in the city. But when a lost merbaby washes up on the beach in Caiyi, Lan Wangji realizes that his childhood savior might be closer than he thinks.
adding shadows to the walls of the cave, by Fleetling
It didn’t take Wei Wuxian long to see what he was pointing at, and as soon as he did, the smaller man turned back to face their juniors. “Cave!” he shouted across the thunder of the raindrops hitting the muddy path. “Hanguang-Jun found us a cave! We’ll stop to dry off, and head out again once the rain has stopped!” Beside him, Lan Wangji inclined his head in silent agreement. The bickering of the juniors cut out as they focused on making it the remaining short distance on the slippery ground.
They all huddled into the entrance of the cave, taking refuge from the rain, but waiting for directions before heading in.
Ouyang Zizhen ran his hand over the wall, feeling slight bumps and indents below his fingers. He brushed off the dirt, reading the characters revealed. “The lovers’ cave,” he read, shaking his head with a smile. Probably a local pair who came here occasionally. It was a bit romantic, when one thought of it. It also probably meant that the cave was safe - no lovers would hide away in a cave that contained resentful energy or other dangers.
Say It Until I Hear You, by DrowningByDegrees
Lan Zhan does not say what has him rattled, but neither does he retreat. He concedes by fractions, an embrace he does not shake off, a shaky sigh when his forehead comes to rest against Wei Wuxian’s collarbone, a wordless surrender when Wei Wuxian gathers him closer. Wei Wuxian doesn’t know precisely which ones, but there are ghosts in bed with them tonight, sorrow and regret and all the might have beens they cast aside so long ago.
Dull Comforts, by Just_Another_Mystery
Five times Làn Sīzhuī pondered the existence of a parent he does not remember having.
Downpour, by milesofheart
The way Wei Ying had looked at him…warily, expecting a fight, steeling himself for Lan Wangji to denounce him. Waiting for the worst from Lan Wangji.
Lan Wangji’s heart cracked down the middle and his whole body shook as he wept now in the rain, the mud of Qiongqi Path seeping into his once-pristine robes.

The Burial Mounds are empty.
Wei Wuxian had expected this, yet for some reason it still hurt to see.

It is not, from Lan Wangji’s perspective, an unpleasant kiss. He has no particular objection to kissing people, though admittedly he has only ever done so as a prelude to activities that involve various other bits of the body. Lan Qiren woke up undisturbed, calm and refreshed, that was enough for him to immediately know something was odd, mainly due to the lack of noises during the night that made him suspect it, he grumbled away his frustrations regarding what he assumed would have been another prank as he got up to get dressed.
When he left the bathroom and moved outside, a very different set of robes awaited him, one he hadn’t worn in years. He finally took a notice of his surrounding, the room was different resembling the one from before their rebuilding, not caring about his state of undress as he open the door almost on the verge of panic, the first thing that rang out in the morning was a loud yell of “WEI WUXIAN!!!”

Before, he’d once fantasized about giving in—shutting Wei Ying up with his lips, stilling his limbs with his own forehead ribbon. He imagined himself making demands. And then Wei Ying went missing. Wei Ying was presumed dead. And Wei Ying returned from the Burial Mounds. By then, Lan Wangji’s desires had long since cooled, and all that remained was longing. Longing to ease Wei Ying’s suffering. Longing to help him know he was not as alone as he seemed to feel. He would have gladly given him everything back then, if he knew how to ask for it. Would have surrendered his body to show him he cared.

Love Song In Reverse, by timetoboldlygo
Wei Wuxian gasps back into life without a single memory left. His friends, his siblings, his home — all lost to the fog in his head, nothing more than a mystery slipping through his fingers. What else was there to do but carry himself around in bits and parts, trying to become whole, a letter waiting to be written? He is – he is Mo Xuanyu, isn’t he? In this body, with these people. This family. He has to be Mo Xuanyu, he didn’t know anything else, even if the name sounded wrong. That was all he had.
Well, that and Hanguang-jun.
Lan Wangji, for his part, has had his taste of love and lost it. In all his grieving and searching, he didn’t expect to find another.

A Teacher’s Oath, by MaelStromm
Deep down, only one thing really matters.
It is not being a good Lan, despite what the entire cultivation world may think, nor is it "sucking the fun out of life" as some disciple had once said.
More than anything, Lan Qiren is a good teacher.
Despite too many to count prejudices and the boy's chaotic behavior, he'll burn his ribbon before he lets this genius be wasted.

some nhs and lwj childhood friends HCs because WHY NOT
lwj is just. not fucking doing it at first. like, excuse me? big brother? you put me in the library pavilion with a gremlin. he brought painting supplies!!!!! into the library pavilion!!!!!!!! and when i told him to put his stuff away, he asked if i wanted to paint with him! who even does that!
lwj does, eventually, agree to try painting with nhs, if only because nhs is a gremlin who always gets his way and also won’t stop sighing loudly while lan zhan, who has not yet learned how to tune someone out, tries and fails to read
lwj actually really likes it. nhs shows him how to paint a few animals, careful not to invade his personal space, and soon enough lwj, ever the little prodigy, has painted the entirety of his warren of rabbits and wants more
after a few more visits, lwj starts getting interested in landscapes and paints a waterfall for nhs, which he proudly presents to nhs at his next visit to qinghe. in terms of actual artistic skill, the painting was very obviously made by a 10 year old, but nhs still has it displayed proudly in his room some 20 years later. lwj demands he take it down every time he comes to visit. wwx thinks it’s adorable and has tried, on more than one occasion, to buy it off nhs
what really cements their friendship, though, is a mutual love for poetry. lwj has always been a fan, to the point where lxc had to nearly turn the gusu collection of poetry upside down to find the most “kid-friendly” (read: easily understood) poetry for lwj’s bedtime stories. nhs didn’t get into poetry until around 13, but once he did, it became very common for him and lwj to sign off letters to each other with a stanza from some super obscure poem in a “well do you know THIS ONE?” type of challenge
lwj even tries his hand at love poems when he’s hardcore pining and then mourning wwx. nhs is his hardest (and only) critic. after wwx is revived and the whole jgy situation is handled, nhs will randomly quote one of lwj’s poems in public just to embarrass his friend. it’s the only time you’ll ever see the veritable hanguang-jun choke on his tea.
gusu lan days are cute as hell, too. nhs continually fails so he can go back and see his friend more. lwj objects on principle, but he’s not-so-secretly glad to see nhs so often.
lwj is legit kinda jealous of wwx and jc when nhs gets close to them, because nhs, being 15 and nhs, starts spending more time with this new and fun brother duo than with his old friend
Cue wwx getting lwj drunk and when nhs and jc check into make sure wwx hasn’t gotten killed, lwj shoots off the bed and drunkenly stumbles over to nhs to full-on cling.
lwj, doing his best drunken glare: “my friend, you don’t get to touch”
nhs: “i didn’t know you were the possessive type, i’m gonna have to revise my marriage plans”
lwj: “ew, no”
incidentally, this is also the night that yunmeng bros discover that nhs, despite being a weak cultivator, is still a nie as he easily lifts lwj over his shoulder and takes him to bed
the years between nmj’s death and nhs’s revenge are really painful for our two friends. the more nhs unravels of jgy’s plans, the more suspicious he becomes of lxc, because what if lxc was actually a willing participant and not unknowingly complicit? lwj visits while nhs is in the height of his paranoia, and the result is a very painful break-up when nhs denies lwj every attempt to sooth and assist nhs in his time of mourning.
by the time nhs’s paranoia dies down and he confirms that lxc is just, you know, way too trusting, the damage has been done and it’ll be much, much safer for lwj if he’s kept at a distance.
on the surface they’re still childhood friends, because nhs doesn’t want anyone getting suspicious, but their friendship is much more like a friendly acquaintanceship, because nhs keeps pushing lwj away whenever he tries to get close again
at this point lwj has started accepting that maybe he’s just not able to hold onto the best things in his life, so he leaves the situation as is, because at least he’s still exchanging letters with nhs and continuously losing against him in games of go. he can accept a facsimile of warmth.
lwj suspects something isn’t right, though, because he doesn’t recognize nhs when he plays sect leader. he knows nhs is lazy and prefers the “good-for-nothing” public perception, but the headshaker is new and frustrating
his suspicions aren’t confirmed, though, until one days nhs is so caught up in his plans that lwj, for the first time ever, wins against him in go
but then dafan mountain happens and wwx is back in life, and then everything goes by so fast that lwj doesn’t have time to sit down and really think about what might be really going on with nhs.
and then there’s guanyin temple. and when all the puzzle pieces slide into place, lwj thinks “ah, that’s where you were.” he’s sad, and he’s angry, but most of all he’s happy, because he finally sees his gremlin friend again after so long
and when he confronts nhs about everything he did in the name of revenge, all he really has to say is “thank you”, because he knows wwx’s revival was as much for nhs’s benefit as it was for lwj, because his friend couldn’t bear to see lwj so lonely

Chapter 29
of the wwx emperor au I’m thinking of calling Lan QiRen’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Week oh god it’s only gonna get worse
Prologue | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5 | Chapter 6 | Chapter 7 | Chapter 8 Part 1 | Chapter 8 Part 2 | Chapter 9 | Chapter 10 | Chapter 11 | Chapter 12 | Chapter 13 | Chapter 14 | Chapter 15 Part 1 | Chapter 15 Part 2 | Chapter 16 | Chapter 17 | Chapter 18 | Chapter 19 | Chapter 20 | Chapter 21 | Chapter 22 Part 1 | Chapter 22 Part 2 | Chapter 23 | Chapter 24 | Chapter 25 | Chapter 26 | Chapter 27 | Chapter 28
Wei Ying has watched the lanterns on every fifth night of his birthday festival for as long as he can remember.
His earliest memories are pale and indistinct, a collection of images and sounds, slithering through his fingers even as his grip tightens. The cold rooftop tiles under his hands, being lifted up onto his father’s shoulders, his mother’s delighted laughter. The Empress of the Shan Empire, a cool and dignified statue in the daylight hours, dancing over the moonlit roof peaks in her bare feet. Falling asleep in her lap while the lanterns drifted above, the soft murmur of his parents’ voices lulling him into sweet dreams.
Eighteen years, and eighteen lantern festivals, but most of those he remembers clearly are filled with an ache of loss. He has often cursed his unreliable childhood memories, lamenting the cruelty of recollections that deny him access to those early years. Guilt usually follows after, as relentless as the passing of time. He has never had a cause to feel abandoned; not one festival has gone by where he was allowed to sink into despondency and isolation. Even on those years when copious amounts of wine were needed, his brothers had always been by his side, prepared to chase away the loneliness by any means necessary. Without Nie HuaiSang and Jiang Cheng, Wei Ying is certain that he would have grown twisted and warped by the loss, forever attempting to lean into the warmth that no longer existed. All that he is, and will still become, he owes to them. To shijie, to Wen Qing, to Wen Ning and A-Yuan.
But the easy, uncomplicated joy of watching the lights dance across the sky, that had gone away on his twelfth birthday. He had been convinced that it would never return. Not because of the loss, or the accompanying ache which had, over time, grown dull and heavy instead of sharp and bright, but because he believed it impossible, to feel a child’s joy once having reached adulthood.
There are many things he believed to be impossible before meeting Lan Zhan.
The outskirts of YiLing are sparsely populated to the east, a few sprawling farms and long pasture fields stretching between the town and the river. They have a small hill to themselves; the ground is still warm from the sun, the air saturated with the syrupy scent of the late autumn harvest, the fireflies rivaling the lanterns with their lights. They can hear the sounds of celebration from YiLing, but the noise is far away and muffled, barely penetrating the comfortable cocoon of silence between them.
Wei Ying’s little finger is hooked around Lan Zhan’s.
They are lying down, eyes locked on the sky. Wei Ying is sure that he will have grass and dirt in his hair, and probably a liberal smear of both on his robes. He is also sure that Lan Zhan’s hair and robes will be as pristine as they were before he cautiously stretched himself out by Wei Ying’s side.
Their shoulders are almost close enough to touch. Lan Zhan’s hand had trembled once, then settled into stillness. Wei Ying can hear him breathe, the rhythm slow and even. He thinks, if he were only to shift a little closer, if the din of YiLing were to fall quiet, perhaps he could hear Lan Zhan’s heart beating as well, and discern if it flutters as restlessly as his own.
The touch is small and insignificant. Wei Ying has already held Lan Zhan’s hand in his own, had tangled their fingers together, had felt the warmth of his palm. But it does not feel small. The contact overshadows the lights above; a bright, single point of happiness that Wei Ying would give anything to keep.
“Lan Zhan,” he says.
“Mhm.”
Wei Ying bites his tongue.
It is not the lack of words that gives him pause. He possesses a river of words that relentlessly rushes whichever way it pleases, paying no mind to his intentions or wishes. He has had to learn how to dam this river; the Emperor must always take care of how he speaks, least he means to start a war with an offhand remark. But Lan Zhan is not a an overbearing sect leader, or a supplicant asking for favors. Nothing Wei Ying wants to say can ever be simple, because complexity is rooted in his birth, his status, his entire existence.
And yet.
What can be more simple than a feeling of emptiness finally filled, a sense of completeness, of irrevocable rightness?
Lan Zhan turns his head to look at him. There is a firefly hovering over his temple, a tiny burst of light traveling across a flawless cheek. In the gloom, his eyelashes seem thicker, his eyes black, their depth an endless abyss.
Wei Ying wants to look at him forever.
“Lan Zhan, I really like you.”
The dark eyes widen, then immediately return to their study of the sky. Wei Ying watches his throat move, a heavy swallow that could mean anything at all. He cannot tell if there are words building behind the movement, and despite the obvious surprise in his gaze, as brief as it was, Lan Zhan’s expression has not changed.
No, Wei Ying is wrong. It has changed.
There is a faint tremble to his eyelashes. The tips of his ears appear slightly darker. His throat moves again, but his mouth does not.
His little finger is still hooked around Wei Ying’s. It has not pulled away.
There is an entire language being spoken in front of Wei Ying’s eyes, but it is a language he does not yet understand. It is frustrating and painful to think, that he may never have an opportunity to learn, that Lan Zhan may not want him to know.
His future stretches in front of him, a lone seat on top of a dais, as decades endlessly melt into one another, seasons coming and going, favors given and taken away, a continuous tedium of birthdays, and festivals, and sect leader meetings. Lan Zhan nothing more than a cool and collected face, glimpsed twice a year among the sea of others, forever remaining a half-met stranger.
It is unbearable.
“Lan Zhan--“
“You are the Emperor,” Lan Zhan says, his voice stiff.
“Yes, but--“
“Young Master Lan!”
Startled, they both jerk upright, reaching for their swords.
“There you are,” an annoyed voice comes from the bottom of the hill, “if not for the Lan Sect funeral robes, I would have passed by this hill a dozen times.”
Wei Ying cannot make out the small shape climbing closer to them, but he recognizes the voice easily.
Lan Zhan has already gotten to his feet and moved back, placing himself a respectable distance away. Wei Ying was right. His hair and robes are as immaculate as they were before. Wei Ying, on the other hand, is pretty sure that he has grass sticking to his entire back.
“Why is it always you?” he snaps at the small disciple.
The boy, now close enough where he does not need to shout, offers him a sloppy bow and a disgruntled greeting.
“Your Majesty.”
“Your Majesty, Your Majesty” Wei Ying grumbles, “not two days ago you tried to bite me. I should have you tossed in the dungeons.”
“If it pleases Your Majesty,” the boy says, “this one would rather spend the night in the dungeon than traipsing through the YiLing countryside. Sect Leader Nie asks Your Majesty to meet him at the Lan Sect camp. There has been a development.”
“The Lan Sect camp?” he glances at Lan Zhan, but this time, the other boy’s face is truly unreadable.
“What is a Lan Sect camp? What development?”
“This one does not know,” the disciple says with exaggerated patience, “but if Your Majesty were to go there, I am sure it will all be made clear.”
Wei Ying ignores him.
“Lan Zhan, what is he talking about? What camp?”
Lan Zhan is silent for a few moments before he speaks, “The Lan Sect escort. The disciples that accompanied us to YiLing. There are no accommodations to be had in the town itself, so they have made camp on the outskirts.”
“Why?” Wei Ying asks, feeling bewildered, “all the other disciples are in the Immortal Mountain City. Why would you leave yours in YiLing?”
Lan Zhan’s throat moves again, but he does not need to speak. Wei Ying understands the moment the words have left his mouth.
They were not invited.
Uncle has always been the one to send out invitations, the Jiang Sect lotus prominently placed next to the Imperial Seal, his signature replacing Wei Ying’s, who could not be bothered with such minor formalities.
Fury rises in him for the second time that night, but this one is cold and already settled, not likely to wane any time soon.
“They will be coming with us,” he says, turning to head back down the hill.
What other small formalities have been left to Jiang FengMian over the years? Many more than Wei Ying can count; if he is to begin questioning his uncle’s methods, each must be addressed, reinspected, and altered if necessary.
This will take weeks. Possibly months.
Striding ahead, wishing he could kick something, he turns to the small disciple.
“Little beast, what is your name?”
The boy grimaces, but offers a half-bow, even sloppier than the one before, “This one is Nie XuanYu.”
“Nie XuanYu,” Wei Ying says, “You have a bad temper and a terrible attitude. Try and pay attention to the Second Young Master, and you may yet learn how a disciple is supposed to behave.”

"As long as the sea is bound to wash up on the sand, and stars are above you, we will meet again."
Fuck it, that deserved cursives
I. Cannot. Explain. To you what I'm feeling right now
This this right here
I love it and I hate it
This kind of bitter-sweet and gentle and peaceful "until we meet again"
It hits so so deep
That's... that's life
A thousand "until we meet again"s, even to those you love most
And there is nothing more tender than a promise, we will!
And it fits! As bitter-sweet as it is! It's also so them! They've always kept each other go when they needed it. Because that's what you do for those you love. You let them go. :')
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Guys ... I'm overflowing with emotion
OH MY GOD WANGXIAN 😭😭😭
"Way ahead of you."
He was!!! He was!!!
Always one step ahead :')
It's a promise! All of this! This whole ending! It's bittersweet and a parting of the ways, but every sentence spoken is a promise: "We will find each other"!!!
Guys ...
I'm crying so hard
This hits something deep in me
I'm not going to tell you half my life's story but "let go of what you love" is something I learned early and this hits EXACTLY that spot
But ... in a good way 😅
I ...
Again the sound I made when the big orchestral wangxian part ended and it was just wei Wuxian's flute playing was not human
I watched it without typing from there, quite frankly, partly because I was hiccuping, trying to hold in sobs
So what I'm writing now is after I've finished watching.
I honestly can't explain to you what I'm feeling now. That last scene ...
The flute playing into the silence ... already did so much to me
And then
And then
Tumblr media
And ...
I have no words
I still have tears in my eyes typing this, even though I took five minutes to get myself together
What I can't show in screenshot, but what took my breath away the most was the fact that Wei Wuxian stops playing just before the end of the song
It's the second to last note he's ending on and ....
The last note of Wangxian never gets played!!!
The song isn't over!
WANGXIAN isn't over! 😭😭😭
I ... I can't put into words what that did to me
I heard that last note that REALLY WASNT THE LAST NOTE and I gasped
Because it just klicked in that moment
Something in my head klicked that THIS WAS HOW THEY'RE TELLING US !!!
This song isn't over
This STORY, their story, isn't over!
And that silence right after the song didn't quite end it took my breath away
It's like the show is telling us!
The silence! THE SILENCE IS WHAT MATTERS!
Look at the space in between! Listen to the silence! Listen to that note that could not be played! This! This is what we're ending on! Listen!
I want to bow down to whover wrote and directed this show!
Guys! I don't know how the book ends (and don't tell me!!) But they took the fact that they can't make this romance "explicit" and made poetry instead ...
All of it ALL OF IT is a promise: "we will meet again", "way ahead of you", the song isn't over, "Wei Ying" ... it's all a promise
I'm speechless
I'm crying and I'm smiling and I can't stop!
And then, of course, that last shot
The one wwx is smiling at Lan Wangji outside the shot (because again, look at what we can not show you!)
Tumblr media
I cannot even begin to describe how happy I am that his smiling face as he looks at lan Wangji is the last thing were seeing
I'm smiling. I have tears streaming down my face and I'm smiling. :')
And then EVEN THE THANK YOU NOTE AT THE END FITS THE THEME!!! 😭😭😭
"Thanks to the author, Mo Xiang Tong Chou for bringing the characters to life."
"May their wishes come true thereafter." 😭😭😭
"Until next time."
.
.
.
I ... I'm speechless
@sweetlittlevampire @fandom-glazed @elenirlachlagos @allhailthedramallama @luckymoony @kyrrahbird @i-love-him-on-purpose
Thank you thank you thank you guys! (I might be a tat more emotional than usual right now 😅) honestly, thank you for the great discussions and your insights and reading my rambling and especially thanks to those of you who got me to watch this show in the first place. I am so so so happy right now and so sad that it's over! 💙🖤

October Drabbles 17-20
More drabbles
17. Insects               (pre-canon baby Yunmeng trio gen)
Wei Wuxian laughs the first time Jiang Cheng yelps as an insect bites him, and the second and the third and fourth, but he stops on the fifth one when Jiang Cheng bursts into tears. Jiang Yanli pats him on the shoulder and says, “A-Cheng,” half comforting and half weary; Jiang Cheng is eight years old, too old to be crying over a silly thing like insect bites.
“They’re just bugs,” Wei Wuxian says dismissively, but he pats Jiang Cheng’s other shoulder all the same. “What kind of man will you be if you can’t handle a little pain?”
“Why do they keep biting me?” Jiang Cheng continues crying, unmollified. “They’re not bothering you.”
“They are.” Wei Wuxian slaps at his neck with the hand that’s not resting on Jiang Cheng’s shoulder. “I’m just tougher.” Before Jiang Cheng can argue, he quickly adds, “And they don’t like me as much as you.”
“Maybe A-Cheng is sweeter,” Jiang Yanli teases. She’s rubbing Jiang Cheng’s back now as the pace of his tears starts to slow.
“You don’t think I’m sweet, shijie?” Wei Wuxian pouts exaggeratedly, making Jiang Yanli roll her eyes.
“I suppose.” Her eyes twinkle. “Maybe it’s all that spice you eat that drives them away.”
“All right, then. Jiang Cheng, you have two choices: learn to deal with pain or eat as much pepper as I do. What do you say? You think you can handle either one?”
“Both!” Jiang Cheng’s upset is forgotten in the face of Wei Wuxian’s challenge and his desire to never let the older boy surpass in anything. “Of course I can do both!”
Wei Wuxian laughs fondly. “Let’s go home, then, and get started.”
18. Fireplace               (canon LWJ post-seclusion feelings)
The nights are often cold in Cloud Recesses, particularly in winter. It never used to bother Lan Wangji, but lately the chill seems to seep into his bones and set the scars on his back aching. Perhaps he’s getting old, he thinks, but that’s silly when he’s barely past twenty and a cultivator of his caliber can live for a good long time. Perhaps it’s only that he’s tired, in a deeper-than-physical way. He’s nearly half a year out of seclusion but still getting used to returning to society, still adjusting to a world that hasn’t really changed while he has.
“I worry that you’re lonely,” his brother said to him not long ago, but that’s foolish too. He sees his brother and his uncle and little Sizhui and other Lan disciples regularly. That’s no less company than he had before his seclusion—more, really, with Sizhui always happy to see him, his smile bright and undisturbed by the horrors of his past.
But that doesn’t explain why, on those cold nights, Lan Wangji sits in front of the fire in a room that is no more or less quiet than it has always been and feels the cold and the silence more intensely than he ever did before. He wraps a blanket around his shoulders and determinedly doesn’t think of a smiling face and sparkling eyes, of a cheerful voice he didn’t realize just how badly he would miss until he could never hear it again. He never really had Wei Wuxian at his side, after all, so nothing has changed.
19. Praise               (post-canon Wangxian fluff)
Lan Wangji is not naturally effusive with praise, but he loves Wei Wuxian deeply and genuinely thinks he’s an amazing person, so why wouldn’t he praise him? Wei Wuxian’s view of himself doesn’t match how Lan Wangji sees him, confident in his intelligence but not in his worth as a person. He should hear, until he really believes it, that he’s a wonderful person, that Lan Wangji’s life is better with him in it, that anyone would be lucky to know him, that he matters and deserves to be happy.
Besides, he loves the way Wei Wuxian reacts when Lan Wangji praises him and expresses his affection in plain terms. He gets so flustered, laughing this slightly panicked laugh and squirming as though he physically can’t deal with how much Lan Wangji loves him, or at least not with hearing it put into words. He’ll try to brush it off with jokes or with pleas of “Warn me before you say something like that, Lan Zhan!” but Lan Wangji only ever looks steadily back at him, refusing to take it back, communicating with his gaze that he meant every single word.
“You’re too kind to me, Lan Zhan,” Wei Wuxian says once, more quietly, when they’re curled up in bed together, after he’s done his usual nervous flailing.
“No,” Lan Wangji responds in a steady, certain voice. “I’m exactly as kind as you deserve.”
Red rises high in Wei Wuxian’s cheeks and he looks back at Lan Wangji with a mix of uncertain gratitude and so much love. Lan Wangji expects him to argue, but for once, Wei Wuxian only curls into his chest, accepting, at least this time, the truth of what Lan Wangji sees in him.
20. Dogs              (pre-/during/post-canon WWX gen)
(1) “It’s mine!” Wei Wuxian cries, his voice going high with desperation. He’s so hungry and it’s only a scrap of food, a piece of a steamed bun thrown away by someone who can afford to be wasteful, but it will keep him going for a little longer, give him time to find something else to keep him going for a little longer than that.
The dog growls and bares its teeth and Wei Wuxian panics, throwing his find into the dog’s face. He’s been bitten before, and he’s not hungry enough yet to risk that happening again. He runs away as fast as he can, not daring to look back to see if the terrifying beast is following him.
As he curls up that night, cold and hungry and frustrated, Wei Wuxian thinks of the dog’s ferocious expression and struggles to convince himself that he can try again tomorrow, that somehow it will be all right.
(2) Wei Wuxian half hides behind the man who said to call him Uncle Jiang, though he’s little better than a stranger, as he walks into Lotus Pier. His uncertain hope gives way to fear as he sees another little boy in the yard, surrounded by dogs. His high-pitched yelps are punctuated by laughter as he plays with them, but Wei Wuxian only sees danger. Uncle Jiang said he would be safe here, but clearly he isn’t.
He moves to hide fully behind Uncle Jiang’s legs and starts to cry, overwhelmed by fear and disappointment at realizing that this place won’t be a refuge for him after all. Once he manages to explain through his tears what’s wrong, Uncle Jiang says, “Don’t worry. I’ll take care of it. The dogs will be gone soon. Nothing can hurt you here.”
The other boy looks at him curiously, his hand on the head of one of the dogs, and Wei Wuxian can see that he’s not hurt, but his instincts, honed by his time on the streets, still scream “Danger! Danger!” He desperately hopes that Uncle Jiang really will keep him safe, that he really will be all right here.
(3) If he wasn’t so busy panicking, Wei Wuxian would be embarrassed about how he reacts when Fairy comes runnning. He likes to think of himself as fearless, and likes other people to see him that way, but there are, unfortunately, things he’s afraid of. He’s a long way from that scared little boy on the streets, but he can’t let go of those old, deeply ingrained fears.
But Lan Wangji doesn’t judge him, though he clearly doesn’t understand. He only asks why, and somehow Wei Wuxian trusts him enough to tell the truth. And once he does, Lan Wangji lets him cling in fear, lets Wei Wuxian hide behind his shoulder or his sleeve, lets Wei Wuxian be afraid without trying to talk him out of it, however irrational his fears.
Later, Wei Wuxian learns that Lan Wangji was also once a lost little boy, in his own distinct way, and he thinks that maybe that’s why he understands that the painful lessons learned in childhood are not easily shrugged off. (Even later, he learns how much Lan Wangji loves him and realizes that that’s probably the reason Lan Wangji accepted him, fears and all.)
(4) “Fairy, stay back!” Jin Ling calls. He rolls his eyes a little to show that he thinks Wei Wuxian’s fear is silly but he’ll humor it. The dog sits down some ten paces from Wei Wuxian, which isn’t nearly enough to make him feel okay about it, but at least Jin Ling is between him and the dog.
“Fairy’s a good dog, you know. A special dog. There’s no reason to be afraid.” Jin Ling’s tone is still a little mocking, but more gentle than Wei Wuxian could have imagined him being a few months ago—more gentle than Jiang Cheng ever was to him.
He can see, if he looks, that Fairy doesn’t look anything like those vicious dogs that loom large in his memory, tongue lolling out and tail occasionally wagging, and healthy, with no need to fight anyone for food. He thinks, maybe, that if he keeps meeting Jin Ling, one day he’ll be able to believe that he can be safe around Fairy, and maybe even around other dogs, but not yet. “You keep your ferocious hellbeast to yourself.”
Jin Ling scoffs and shakes his head, but there’s a fondness in his eyes. “If you insist. But you’ll learn to love him someday.”
For his nephew, and also for himself, Wei Wuxian is willing to try. “I just might.”

Lunar New Year Gift for vedrividia!
Tumblr media
Pairing: Wei Wuxian/Lan Wangji; past Wei Wuxian/Other (implied) Rating: Mature Warnings: brief depiction of sexual harassment, brief instance of misgendering, implied/referenced past suicide attempt, implied/referenced past sexual assault (off-screen), implied/referenced past forced pregnancy (off screen), implied/referenced underage sex & pregnancy (off-screen), alcoholism, coming out, implied/referenced homophobia Other Tags: trans male character, disabled character, gay male character, open ending, unreliable narrator, angst, tender, chance meeting, confession, reunion, character with incomplete spinal cord injury, iSCI, it probably sounds darker than it is
Summary: On the last eve before spring Wei Ying finds himself at the end of a road. What awaits him on the other side depends on the steps he takes to cross it. Someone walks beside him.
Disclaimer: I am neither Chinese, trans nor disabled. All of the portrayal in this fic is based on research. It's not my intent to offend and I'm open to critique as long as it's respectful and constructive. Wei Ying's journey is his own and does not represent all of the disabled or trans community. The fic is set in a world that closely resembles ours, but where corona never happened and maybe China's laws are just a little less restrictive (but still very phobic), so bear that in mind. I do not own any of the characters.
Notes - Beginning: The idea of trans male Wei Ying had been stuck in my head for a while now, and I've been wanting to try my hand at a trans story, because I've never done that before. This assignment was an opening to do that in a darker, more serious setting. I have also wanted to explore Wei Ying's suicidal issues while translating his story into a modern setting for some time (it was supposed to be a coffee shop AU, only the coffee shop never appeared hah). It was simultaneously hard and fun to write, and I'm grateful for it. @vedrividia, I hope you like it!
In the past I didn't feel like I could do a good job at representing anyone of an identity I couldn't quite empathize with. Since then I've surrounded myself with trans inclusive media, and followed transgender blogs and channels, and I hope that this fic does right by all of them.
I am aware of some of the potentially problematic topics, but I also didn't want to ignore all the challenges and abuse and trauma that trans folk are forced to endure on a daily basis. (Did you know that trans people have some of the highest suicide rates, and likely to have alcohol issues? Making everyone happy and nothing hurt felt all kinds of wrong knowing that.) I believe that representing both - an ideal world alongside the real and flawed one - is important.
Positive stories are also important - this is one. Or at least I hope I was able to make it one.
On a more cheerful note, there are pictures that served as an inspiration for this story, namely this photoset (especially the pic in the leather jacket, the one on the couch and the close up) done in faceapp by a genius, this brain-frying picture, and of course this picture from the Harper's Bazaar Photoshoot that none of us are over. I completely blame Xiao Zhan's androgyny.
Last but not least, I owe a massive thanks to Laura for the amazing beta they did on a rather short notice and brought this fic to another level. Thank you for your hard work!!! :)
End notes: Wei Ying has an incomplete spinal cord injury in the lumbar area (at L1 or L2). I didn't realize that I played myself when I gave him an incomplete injury, because the lack of references and information is in terms of quantity a total opposite to everything available on complete SCI. Which in turn made the telling of such a story feel even more important. If any of you know of a good resource for the daily life of people with iSCI, I'm all ears.
Even researching the walking aides was a challenge, since most information is on wheelchair dependent people, which Wei Ying is not. He has a wheelchair but he refuses to use it, for several reasons, one of them being image, another being worry of atrophy. He likes a good walk, and there's progress thanks to physical therapy, most of which is covered by insurance. I was debating an exoskeleton/brace for him, but from what I gathered they aren't really useful for SCI (I welcome any additional info about this), and those that would be cost a ton and aren't covered by insurance - which is a big factor for Wei Ying. The toss ended up being between forearm crutches and a walking frame, but in the end I decided on crutches, because it seemed like Wei Ying would prefer them? For now? With crutches he can pretend, and I also didn't know to what extent a walking frame would be insurance covered (in China), and whether he'd be at a point where he would accept one. (I imagine the simple ones would be covered by insurance, the question is whether they make a huge difference to crutches, and whether a rollator - with wheels and a seat is something that would count as 'necessary' in this case.)
However, once again, I am not adequately educated on all that goes into the decision making here. No one ever mentions things like these in success stories. In the end I left it as a room for future development. I'm pretty sure Wen Qing is trying to convince him to get one.
I was debating whether to tag dysphoria. While it is not explicitly stated in the fic, Wei Ying does experience it, although this has gotten better since he realized being trans, came out and started testosterone. His decision to not transition fully is one that many trans people make at a point in their lives, for any number of reasons. This does not mean he'll never change his mind, or won't explore other forms of expression. It's a choice that the current Wei Ying is making, completely independent of future Wei Ying.
It's possible in China to get a gender confirmation surgery, but the requirements sound like a nightmare. The first thing you have to do is get diagnosed with 'gender disorder', be five years in (unsuccessful) therapy for it, at least 20 and unmarried. If he decides to transition fully to a male presenting body he can only marry someone who is biologically female in the future, under Chinese law. (Imagine having to divorce your significant other in order to be who you are. Imagine having to make this decision. It makes me want to write fic about it.)
It also costs a ton, as none of it is covered by insurance. You can only start hormone therapy in order to get surgery, which leads a lot of trans people to acquire hormones illegally and without medical counseling. I purposefully did not decide where Wei Ying gets his T from. I didn't want him to not have it, but I left the how undecided. For the most part I headcanon it as one of the things that make my world a little different, since hormone therapy is a thing that exists outside of transitioning as well. E.g. many female athletes use testosterone to boost their performance, and many other women take it for various medical reasons. I feel like WWX could find ways to acquire some. Now, whether this would be legal or not is left open.
By the way? Never, EVER deadname. Just don't. The moment someone comes out to you as trans, tells you their pronouns and name, that's what you use. You forget everything that came prior to that, wipe it out of your memory, it's ashes on the sands of time unless stated otherwise BY THEM, got it?
Now, Wei Ying's case. I was hesitant about how to approach this, but from the start I knew two things. I wanted the same kind of intimacy of WWX & LWJ calling each other by their birth names as in canon, but I also didn't want to go the way most authors go in this case i.e. splitting the names to pre- and post- transition. It is my understanding that most Chinese names are unisex (if anyone has more info on this, I'd love to have it), or can be used for all genders, and I didn't want to force a gender issue where there wasn't one. However, I also wanted something parallel that could be used in a similar way. What I came up with is what you see in text. While Wei Ying did change his name, the only reason why it's still somewhat okay to use 'Wuxian' is because he explicitly says he likes it. In fact, in my head somewhere in the imagined future of this verse, he and JFM have a conversation about it where JFM tells him if he wants it, it can still be his name - he didn't give it to an image, but a person. IDK how well any of this works, or translates to actual trans or Chinese (or trans and Chinese) people, so if you have words for me, let me know.
On a side note, in 2015 China lifted the one-child policy in favor of a two-child policy. A-Yuan was born in 2017.
Wei Ying attempted suicide between the 4th and 8th week of his pregnancy. During the early weeks the probability of a fetus surviving a major fall (even a fall from stairs) is significantly higher than later in the pregnancy, and the scaffolding he jumped from wasn't actually that high. I'm also considering that there might have been something to cushion the fall that he hadn't noticed (a stray rope, or a net) or been aware of (like padding on the stage), but that's a detail I decided to leave to your imagination. On the other hand, sustaining a SCI during early pregnancy is likely to have fatal consequences, as I found out a week before the deadline. In the end, they both got very lucky. Wei Ying spent the next 3 months in a coma. When he woke up it was too late to terminate. Jiang Fengmian had been adamant that the decision not be made without Wei Ying's consent, which was nice of him, but also ended up making the decision for Wei Ying regardless.
Last but not least, if you've read this and feel like you have something to add, I love any kind of comments, whether you wanna review the fic, have some useful information for me, would like to discuss a point or just like to say hi! :)

Transverse
Tumblr media
If asked, Wei Ying wouldn't have remembered how he had gotten to the bar. He didn't remember taking a different route on the short walk back home, he hadn't even been aware there was a bar in the first place. He only remembered suddenly standing in front of it, aching to his bones, limbs leaden with a familiar exhaustion, morose and longing for nothing more than a little break. His back was on fire, his leg was throbbing, the skin underneath his binder wouldn’t stop itching and to top it off his stomach had been cramping in a way it wasn't supposed to anymore. His body had decided to give him a wonderful gift for the holiday. Wei Ying wouldn't wish this on his worst enemy, and that spoke volumes to anyone who knew who occupied that position.
Needless to say, he was desperate for a drink.
The bar was almost empty so early in the afternoon, and shortly before the holiday, all the regulars had likely gone home to see their families. It was the time of reunions, the golden week of spring knocking on the door. The whole town looked empty, seemingly asleep and abuzz at the same time, a strange kind of liminal space born in the atmosphere of the coming celebrations, quiet with contained impatience. He had been painfully aware of it the entire week, the turning of another year leaving him nothing to do but watch people go where Wei Ying couldn't return anymore.
The Lunar New Year always made him hurt worse than usual, in more ways than purely physical. Wei Ying had felt that strange air peak today, even in the confines of his tiny office at the back of the Pacific Coffee branch he had been working at for a little over two months. It was a tiny thing on the busiest street of their small town, smelling of comfort in the wee hours of the morning and of salvation late in the evening. The staff had needed support with handling the supply chain, so that they could focus on serving the staggering amount of customers that came in all day.
It had seemed perfect when Wei Ying had first limped inside on his forearm crutches, with a letter of recommendation, feeling smaller than an ant but significantly less tough. The reintegration program had been a lifeline thrown to a drowning man when he had first heard about it. It had been the opportunity to restart his life. Earn an income. Be independent. In time maybe even repay his friends for the kindness they had shown when he had nowhere to go. Now? Now he wasn't sure that he'd still have a job after the holiday was over.
"This really can't go on," his boss had said, midway through the most gruesome shift the shop had ever witnessed. "Half the supplies came in wrong, for the third time this week!"
Sometimes, Wei Ying wondered why he still bothered. He could probably survive on aid and love for himself, and the Wens made enough to take care of the rest. It just… It could have been nice. To be the one to take care of the people he cared about, for a change.
He really needed that drink.
The whiskey looked enticing from where he was half-sitting, half-leaning on a stool, crutches stashed between his legs. He could almost taste it, the phantom of the sharp flavor burning his tongue.
"Hi, darling." An unfamiliar voice startled him out of his thoughts, causing him to tense. He had been aware of the middle-aged man at the counter, but he hadn't been paying him much attention until now. "Can I buy you a drink? How about Sex on the Beach?"
It was difficult to control himself at that tasteless, juvenile joke. Wei Ying could almost taste the bile rising in his throat and the beginnings of what would no doubt become a pounding headache throbbing in his temples. Great. Just what he had needed.
The whiskey bottle called out to him again, beckoning him to the bitter burn.
A drink. That was what he needed - a drink.
Do you really? Need it? The voice of his therapist came to his mind, sudden and uninvited.
"Hey bartender!" The man called out in the most unwelcome case of accidental telepathy in the history of mankind, sneaking one arm around Wei Ying’s waist, a sweaty hand settling on his hip. "One Sex on the Beach for the miss, on my tab!"
There was the rising bile again, tension squeezing his muscles, and the flash of a haughty smirk at the furthest back of his mind. This wasn't what he wanted. None of it. Neither the touch nor the drink, no matter what his mind wanted to convince him of.
It's easier to need than the things that take hard work, the ones you have to earn. It had taken him a long time to admit that.
"I don't drink." Wei Ying said, angling his head as much as the muscles of his neck permitted to look at the guy invading his personal space squarely. "Remove your hand now."
The guy bristled.
"Hey, chill out, sweetheart." He was quick to regain his composure with an awkward laugh and not enough common sense. Wei Ying supposed he must have been used to rejection. Too bad. "You're so tense… Maybe a virgin cocktail then."
His crutch shot up before the full sentence was out.
The man stumbled back with a startled yelp as the rubber point connected with his chest in a sharp jab.
"Hey! What's your problem?!"
"I said I don't drink." Wei Ying was completely unapologetic, still holding his crutch like a sword, but the guy was already walking away, muttering ‘fucking bitch’ under his breath.
"You alright there, girl?"
His gut clenched at the words.
He looked up to meet the only slightly worried, but otherwise unbothered gaze of the bartender and told himself it wasn't her fault. She probably wasn't even aware. He knew he didn't… There was no way for him to pass. There was nothing he could do about that, had already decided not to, not at this time, not in this country. Wei Ying didn't expect people to know on sight. He didn't. It didn't change the fact though that every single misnomer felt like someone was peeling his skin off.
"I'm not a girl," he said to her almost too quietly, but he knew she heard when he met her gaze. A strained silence passed between them in which Wei Ying watched her frown in confusion, then sputter with the loss of words, before awkwardly shuffling off. He smiled wryly. How funny. It really wasn't anything complicated, and yet… So few were able to comprehend.
Wordlessly, Wei Ying slid off the stool and made his way out of the bar as quick as his crutches let him be.
Once outside, the crisp air mercilessly purifying, he realized how close to the edge he had gotten once again. He had to stop doing this. He couldn't afford another fall, another spiral back down the drain. Not when he had just clawed his way out. Not when he had people depending on him now. Tiny people with curious gray eyes, so much like his own. Waiting for him at home.
Something icy touched his face and instinctively he looked up only to find it snowing.
That explained the ache.
The cold always made him feel sore, although he knew at least some of it was phantom pain. He hadn’t retained a whole lot of feeling in his left leg, beyond a tingle that had become almost constant and the occasional twitch. His right leg was fine, it just tended to ache a lot, to a point where Wei Ying sometimes found himself wishing it wasn't better off than the other one. But then he wouldn't get away with 'forgetting' his wheelchair at home, so he quickly dismissed that thought. Besides, there were plenty of people who had it worse. He, at least, could still walk. He could still stand. Kinda. He had no room to complain.
After all, he had done this to himself.
'It's better this way.' He remembered thinking, standing on the top of the catwalk stairs backstage of the high school auditorium. 'A-jie, Jiang Cheng,… Lan Zhan. I'm sorry for the trouble I've caused you. I love you. I'll get out of your hair now.'
In the end it had been easy to tip backwards and let himself fall.
Waking up had been the hard part. Not only had he failed, but every reason that had pushed him to end it all had only been made worse. Worse still, after. He had lived though, so that was that. There was no utility in regret. He couldn't go back. The only way was forward now, step by painful step. Standing around and staring at the snow falling was nice, but it wouldn't make the walk shorter. Home wasn't far away. He'd take it slow. He'd be there before he knew it.
He barely took three steps before he felt someone's broad shoulder bump against his, his equilibrium yanked roughly from under his feet.
He remembered falling.
Not the act of it, nor every thought and feeling that preceded it, but he remembered the soft pressure at his skull as he tipped backwards, the endless instant of the free fall, a moment frozen in time. Not the impact, but the inevitability of it, coming, coming, almost there. The loss of control. The frightening, exhilarating realization of his absolute surrender. Not the oblivion that followed but the fragments of muddled awareness afterwards. Disorientation, rock bottom and the overwhelming sense of failure.
It had felt nothing like now.
He felt the loss of ground beneath his feet, the scrape of concrete against his palms, as he all but starfished onto the pavement. A sharp pain. The frustrated annoyance of another thing gone wrong in the long list that made up the day.
Only the failure felt the same, funny that.
"I'm sorry!" Said a deep voice. "I wasn't looking."
"Yeah, no shit." He chuckled, because really, who could have guessed.
"Here, let me help." There were hands on his arm, just as he propped himself up, but he yanked it away.
"I'm fine!" He wasn't helpless. He wasn't, dammit! He had his arms, his abdominals, and most of his legs. Getting up from the ground wasn't such a herculean task for him as for those who depended on a wheelchair. He didn't have to call an ambulance just because he starfished. He didn't need any help at all here, especially not the help of some ditzy stranger with their head in the clouds…
"Wei Ying?"
Wei Ying froze.
Few people on this Earth called him that, and none of them had a voice like that. He looked up to see glowing amber on a face carved out of a dream.
"Lan Zhan?"
Of all the people to be in town today of all days, the least likely would have to be Lan Zhan. Lan Zhan, his former senior, Lan Zhan, his best friend. Lan Zhan, whom he had told his secrets, Lan Zhan, who he… who he…
"Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan… Can I kiss you? I understand you don't like me that way, and it's fine, I'm fine, really, but… uhm… It's supposed to be special. The first kiss. I… I want it to be yours. Just one kiss." A child he barely remembered had wanted and wanted, never satisfied. "Ah, it's okay if you don't want to. I get it. It's fine. I'm just being selfish."
But that had been a long time ago. A person he didn't know, a past life that had never truly been. Not for him in any case.
Lan Zhan was looking at him like a ghost had appeared in front of him.
Although, ghosts didn't need crutches. Honestly, Wei Ying did wish he could float quite frequently.
Face twisted in sardonic amusement at that childish wish, he pulled himself up with some maneuvering and a lot of effort. This seemed to wake Lan Zhan from his daze as he quickly followed. Wei Ying didn't miss the sweeping gaze as his once friend took him in, wondering what he saw. A stranger, perhaps? A new person? Him? Wei Ying knew he hadn't changed much on the outside, aside the obvious and maybe in his weight distribution, but Lan Zhan had always had the ability to look past the surface. Was he still able to do that? Or was he just taking in his appearance, assessing his matted, worn out body that seemed to show every year that had passed multiplied by ten? Wei Ying was aware that time had not been the kindest to him, but he was hanging on. He was past the worst now. He was doing better. He was!
He wondered if Lan Zhan still could see that too.
"Wei Ying." His name again, spoken with enough wonder to give Wei Ying the courage to meet his gaze. There was an unspoken question in it.
"Yeah," Wei Ying answered and felt the cusp of a smile pull at the corners of his lips. "Long time no see, Lan Zhan. Fancy meeting you here."
"I really like you, Lan Zhan," the person he didn't know had said, red faced with embarrassment and a shaking voice. "I mean like… like like."
Back then he had believed that moment to be the most nerve-wracking experience he was ever going to survive. Today he missed his naivety.
Lan Zhan gave him a look like he just realized it was really Wei Ying standing in front of him. Like he still could barely believe it. It unraveled a completely different ache in Wei Ying. They had been close once, and though they had always shared their secrets, Wei Ying had seen him so open and unguarded but once.
"I...like...boys," had been the answer. The refusal so, so gentle, unable to accept, thus giving something of equal value in return instead. A truth for a truth, a secret for a secret. "Wei Ying, I'm gay."
Lan Zhan, always figuring things out so quickly, always willing to accept reality no matter how hard it was. Wei Ying hadn't known back then. If he had known… Who knew what would have been then. It didn't matter anymore. It was a life long gone. What remained of it were a few good memories, some of them he wasn't sure were real.
Now, chance had made them cross paths once again, at a liminal space transversing through time.
"Are you hurt?" Lan Zhan's voice brought him back from his thoughts, and Wei Ying looked where he was reaching for his scraped hands and knees.
Lan Zhan, always the same Lan Zhan… "Not selfish."
So wonderful and kind and warm.
"Eh, I'm fine. Nothing Wen Qing can't fix." He brushed his former friend off, noticing how Lan Zhan's eyebrow seemed to go up infinitesimally at the mention of his old classmate and promptly changed the subject. "What brings you to Yiling, Lan Zhan? Shouldn't you be with your family for Chun Jie?"
"I…" Lan Zhan looked away. "Didn't get an earlier flight."
That sounded suspicious, especially since the Lan Zhan Wei Ying knew liked to plan ahead. But Wei Ying wasn't the same he had been, maybe Lan Zhan wasn't either. People were allowed to change. It also didn't answer what he was doing in Yiling in the first place, but Wei Ying wasn't forcing him to tell. Wei Ying had never wanted to force Lan Zhan into anything, he wasn't going to start now.
"Wei Ying." Lan Zhan looked at him again, this time meeting his eyes squarely. He paused. "How have you been?"
Wei Ying felt the loom of a shadow over him, and his gaze dropped to the ground for a second.
"As you can see." He put a reassuring smile on his face as he summoned enough will to hold Lan Zhan's gaze. "Still alive and kicking."
Which was probably much more than the last time Lan Zhan had heard of him.
"I was looking for you. I wanted to see you. After." The what remained unspoken. Lan Zhan's kind heart hadn't changed. Wei Ying sought comfort in it, warmed by the thought of his best friend trying to get in touch even after everything went to hell. "I was told you… left."
Wei Ying made a soft sound of affirmation through the small smile that had spread on his face. "I moved out on my eighteenth birthday. Aunt Yu… I was supposed to stay till graduation, but... ah. I fucked up. Colossally."
"Wei Ying." Lan Zhan remained the only person Wei Ying knew who managed to frown without a single crease on his face. "You were recovering."
"It was fine, Lan Zhan." Wei Ying chuckled even as he held back a sigh. Lan Zhan didn't know half of it. "I moved in with the Wens."
There was a pause.
"With Wen Qing?" Lan Zhan asked and Wei Ying realized that small detail wouldn't have been immediately clear to him, all things considered.
"With Wen Qing and her family." He nodded. After a moment of thought he added. "Not Wen Chao. I know nothing about that douchebag."
"Mn," Lan Zhan agreed and it sounded so wholehearted that it startled a laugh out of Wei Ying.
"Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan," Wei Ying said, feeling truly light for the first time in a long time. The smile he gave Lan Zhan felt warm and genuine. He hoped Lan Zhan saw it too, and didn't think Wei Ying was trying to shake him off, when he spoke next. "It's so good to see you. You're the best thing that happened to me today. I would love to catch up, but they're waiting for me at home and I'm already late."
"Mn." Lan Zhan nodded. There was a pause. Then, just as Wei Ying was about to ask for his number, "I could. Walk you. If you like."
"I thought you had a flight to catch." Wei Ying wanted to smack his mouth for how hopeful he sounded.
"Mn," Lan Zhan said. "In the evening."
"Lan Zhan!" He startled, amused and surprised at the same time. "And here I thought your bedtime was nine! Don't tell me you crossed to the dark side."
"It is Chuxi." Lan Zhan's voice was soft with a playful note, and Wei Ying felt his heart turn all over again even as he laughed.
"Aiya, Lan Zhan…" A smile spread on his face. "Alright then. I'd love to have your company. If you're sure."
"I am," Lan Zhan answered. "I would… very much like to… catch up with you."
"Well then." Wei Ying's smile broadened and started again in the direction he was heading earlier. "Right this way, sir. But I'm warning you. I'm basically a snail now."
For a beat there was silence, in which Wei Ying figured that Lan Zhan was probably looking for a proper response. He still didn't know how to handle self-deprecating humor, then. Wei Ying chuckled quietly to himself. The more things change…
"That is alright," Lan Zhan finally said. "I have time."
"Oh, do you? That's great!" Wei Ying grinned from ear to ear, marveling at how easy it suddenly was. "Aah, Lan Zhan I really missed this!"
"Mn," Lan Zhan agreed but didn't say anything else.
For a few moments silence reigned again, of a comfortable kind. One that allowed Wei Ying to bask in the startling, almost miraculous presence of his best friend. Or it would have been, had Wei Ying not been keenly aware of Lan Zhan's intense stare.
"Do I really look that bad?" He teased, hoping to give Lan Zhan the opening he probably needed to ask whatever questions he had. "I've actually gained weight over Dongzhi you know."
Lan Zhan blinked, as if startled to be called out. Wasn't he aware that he had been staring? Or had he not expected Wei Ying to say something?
"You look…" he started, then swept his gaze over Wei Ying.
"Tired?" Wei Ying offered, keeping the humor in his words. The last thing he wanted Lan Zhan to think was that he needed to sugar coat his words around him now. "Stressed? Battle worn?"
"Different," Lan Zhan finished.
"Ah." Wei Ying breathed out, something in his chest tightening. "Good different, or bad different?"
Lan Zhan looked at him for a long moment.
"Different you," he finally answered. A pause. "More you."
Wei Ying's breath stuttered, a small questioning sound dragging itself up his throat.
"Wei Ying…" Lan Zhan hesitated for a brief moment, unsure. "May I know your pronouns?"
Always so straight to the point.
"Pro… Pronouns?!" Wei Ying chuckled but even he could hear the nerves buzzing through that sound. "How did you figure that?"
Lan Zhan just kept looking at him. Wei Ying swallowed.
"I…"
He had to know. Since he actually asked, he had to already know. Or at least suspect. Be aware. In general, or about Wei Ying? Had he realized in their years apart, or was there something about Wei Ying now that made him guess? No one has ever been able to tell upon glance. No one.
Something fluttered deep in his chest, like the jingles of a tambourine reverberating. It gave him courage.
Wei Ying took a deep, steadying breath. "He, him, Lan Zhan. It's he, him."
He managed to swallow the thousand words that dragged themselves up his throat instead of that one, simple truth. To his credit, Lan Zhan let him, waiting patiently and with complete silence for Wei Ying to say his part.
"I'm trans," Wei Ying added, finding it easier to say after the initial confession. "As in full time, on actual testosterone, trans male."
Their eyes met. A heartbeat of silence.
"Mn." Lan Zhan nodded. "Makes sense."
Wei Ying had not expected that.
In his defense, no one had ever replied like that to him coming out.
"What?" He choked out, bewildered. Lan Zhan was giving him a gentle look, a diametrical opposite of Wei Ying's wide eyes. "Why does that make sense, Lan Zhan?"
"It didn't before." Lan Zhan's gaze dropped. "Now it does."
"What? Why?" Wei Ying repeated, not comprehending a single word his friend had said. At the back of his mind he knew he should be happy and relieved that as dear a friend as Lan Zhan accepted him, and he would be later, but now he was just confused. "Lan Zhan, what are you saying?"
"You confounded me. Before. I didn't understand. It didn't. Add up." He didn't even expect an answer beyond a shrug and an 'It just does', and yet Lan Zhan gave him one, trying to explain like he wanted Wei Ying to understand something important. Important enough to bring it up at their first chance meeting in years. It still didn't clear anything up. The way he was dragging his words out seemed odd too, for how upfront Lan Zhan usually was.
"What didn't add up?" Wei Ying asked again. What about him had confused Lan Zhan?
"I didn't know you were a boy. So it didn't make sense," Lan Zhan answered without looking up and Wei Ying felt dread tighten his stomach into a knot. "But now it does."
"What?" He frowned, the rush of blood pounding in his ears. "Lan Zhan, what are you talking about?"
Lan Zhan finally looked up at him and Wei Ying suddenly felt light headed. The grip on his crutches must have gone knuckle white from how firmly he was gripping the handles. It couldn't be…
"I was confused why I liked you," Lan Zhan whispered, dropping his gaze again. "Why I enjoyed kissing you."
Wei Ying's brain was white static.
No. No, no, no, no, no, no, "No!"
His whole body wanted to recoil with shock.
"Wei Ying," Lan Zhan pleaded but was cut short.
"I confessed to you! I told you I liked you!" He saw the bob of Lan Zhan's throat, how his eyes fell shut as he swallowed. Wei Ying despaired for words that could express the entire scale of emotions he felt, from betrayal to hope, but mostly just... shock. "You said you… You've never… And now, after everything… Do you even… Lan Zhan!!!"
"Wei Ying," he said his name like it was all he was capable of saying, with a hitch of sudden hesitance on the last syllable, a minuscule frown around his eyes, like he realized something important. "Do you still call yourself Wei Ying?"
The quiet question conjured up another memory, of an occasion much kinder.
"It's my birth name," he heard his youthful voice, still too high although most had described it as low. Lan Zhan had raised an eyebrow at him, even more puzzled than before. Wei Ying had laughed as he went to explain. "Same character as in 'infant'. Wuxian is the name uncle Jiang gave me so that I have a better name than, you know, 'baby'. It's a cool name! I mean, 'no envy' come on! Like I have no match in the world! Totally rad, you know, uncle Jiang's naming sense is A+."
"But you prefer Wei Ying." Lan Zhan had looked at him then, searchingly and Wei Ying had looked away with a snort, to hide his swallow.
"It's a terrible name. Who the hell names their baby 'baby'?"
Lan Zhan hadn't replied anything to that, and Wei Ying still remembered his next words, and how they had burned on his tongue, how he couldn't hold them back.
"It's what the people who loved me had called me."
In the present, Wei Ying found himself laughing in spite of the utter shock. Only Lan Zhan. Only Lan Zhan would give him a heart attack first then go make sure he wasn't deadnaming him on top of everything.
"Lan Zhan!!!" He cried out. "That's so not the point right now! But, yes, I do. I changed it back, actually. Officially, I mean."
"You dislike it." It sounded more like a question than a statement, so Wei Ying answered.
"Don't get me wrong, I still think Wuxian is way cooler, and my siblings still call me that, but…" His gaze fell away from Lan Zhan to something more distant, beyond his focus as he struggled over his words, drawing them out only with great difficulty from where they were rooted deep inside of him. "It's the name given to the image of a person that never really existed. Like… the painting of a person you met in a dream. And I sorta… I like to imagine that, regardless of who I am… They would still love me."
They. The people who gave him that horrible, unimaginative name.
"Mn," Lan Zhan agreed like there had never been any doubt about it. Wei Ying snorted.
"Wei Ying," there it was again, his name, spoken so kindly, if not hesitantly as Lan Zhan too seemed to be struggling for words. "I would like to apologize. I hurt you. I have been looking for you to tell you this."
All at once, Wei Ying felt his shock settle into something more profound, like the wave that had swallowed him revealing the depth of the ocean. There was nothing Lan Zhan had to apologize for. Not for the lack of awareness, and certainly not for his feelings. Even their conflicts had always stemmed from a place of deep care.
"No." Wei Ying shook his head. "Not more than I hurt myself, Lan Zhan. Even when you scolded me, you never hurt me."
Had Lan Zhan broken his heart? Yeah, he had. So what? Did that mean he could be held accountable for it? Wei Ying's feelings were his own shit to deal with, not Lan Zhan's. Returning them wasn't Lan Zhan's duty. Even if he returned them, would it be fair to fault him for running away from them? For feeling insecure and anxious about his own attraction? For not knowing these things weren't as clear cut as all the adults around them had wanted to make them believe? It wasn't like Wei Ying had known either back then. He had, perhaps, understood himself even less than Lan Zhan. Most importantly, it was all in the past now. It couldn't be changed. What they made of it now was what mattered.
"None of my bullshit is your fault," he added. "You didn't go and tell me to fuck up my life. That was all on me."
"You wrote," Lan Zhan started, then paused, hesitating, then started again. "In your letter, you wrote…"
Wei Ying picked up on the question immediately.
"Not you," he said, the same words he had penned all those years ago in what was one of only two letters. "Never you. I had my reasons, but none of them were about you. In fact, I thought of you as the last good thing in my life at that point. The one true friend I still had left."
Lan Zhan's gaze fell on his crutches, but he didn't ask. Wei Ying was grateful.
"Come on, I need to get a move on," he said, starting to walk again, smiling at the surprised expression Lan Zhan had given him, when he realized he was still welcome to accompany him. Maybe it was something about that look that made Wei Ying add, after another second of thought, "There are people waiting for my return."
"Mn," Lan Zhan hummed, falling back in step next to him. "That's good. You should have people waiting for you at home."
Wei Ying couldn't help but smile.
"Say, Lan Zhan,…" he said after a few seconds of silence, when all what Lan Zhan has confessed slowly sunk in. "When you say you've been looking for me… You mean all this time?"
"Mn." Lan Zhan nodded. Wei Ying watched him gather his thoughts, the snow fluttering all around them. "I wanted to see you. Ask how you were doing. See if… If you needed support. Apologize. For not being a good friend to you before."
"Lan Zhan…" Wei Ying listened to him, and when Lan Zhan finally looked up at him his gaze was so sincere that his heart ached with it.
"I wanted to tell you the truth." Lan Zhan didn't let himself be interrupted. "That I liked you back. Without any expectations. That I didn't understand, but that it didn't matter. That I could like you without understanding why. That I wasn't asking for anything, just wanted you to know. That I wanted to help, in any way you'd let me."
"Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan…" Wei Ying sighed, vision suddenly blurred. He drew a deep breath. "But I wasn't there."
"Mn." Lan Zhan nodded. "I asked your sister where I could find you…"
"But she didn't know," Wei Ying finished for him. No one knew, except one person. "And Jiang Cheng wouldn't give you my address if you held him at gunpoint."
"Your brother knows you're here." It had the structure of a question but it was spoken as a statement, the same kind of incredulous as the look Lan Zhan was giving him. All things considered, it was kinda fair, Wei Wuxian thought as he barked a laugh.
"Yeah," he said, shoulders shaking a little as he snickered. "He's the designated secret keeper."
Lan Zhan just stared, wordlessly.
Wei Ying's smile gained an edge at the unspoken question. He had to clear his throat before he answered. "We're… not quite alright yet, but… Ah, how do I say this? He's the better judge of the situation? With, uhm, aunt Yu, I mean. It's… complicated."
Honestly, when wasn't it?
"I… see." Lan Zhan really didn't sound like he did, but didn't press, continuing his story instead. "Your sister was able to tell me which city you were in. So I… applied for a job."
Wait. Pause. Rewind.
"You work here?!" Wei Ying felt his jaw go slack.
"As an attorney. At 'Xiao and Song'," Lan Zhan confirmed, then looked back at Wei Ying. "Civil law. With focus on LGBTQ+ rights. I passed the bar last year."
"You…" There was so much to unpack in that statement that Wei Ying couldn't quite get the words together fast enough. At the back of his mind he was aware he should probably congratulate Lan Zhan on his degree but he was too stunned by the other, more important implications. "You've moved here? For work? All because… Because… You were looking for me?"
"Mn."
"Lan Zhan!" His amazing friend who, for some reason, in spite of having a great new life had been desperate to find him. "But you… But I…"
"Wei Ying," he spoke so, so softly, but with clear intent to stop any protest Wei Ying might have wanted to utter. It worked. Wei Ying's mouth fell shut, taking his friend in with a bright, wide gaze. "I missed you. I have no expectations. I just… missed you."
Warmth spread in Wei Ying's chest over the tender words, like a dying flame rekindled.
"Lan Zhan..." He didn't quite know what to say, oddly touched. "It's how you knew, isn't it? I'm not the only trans person you've met."
"There was a client," Lan Zhan admitted. "They made me think of you. I have wanted to ask you since. I wanted to know if… If I made a mistake."
He didn't specify what mistake he feared being guilty of. He didn't really have to.
For a while Wei Ying just looked at him.
"Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan…" He sighed, a small but genuine smile stealing itself onto his lips. "You… you're something else, you know that?"
Lan Zhan didn't reply, but there was something vulnerable in his expression.
"I missed you too."
Lan Zhan's eyes snapped back to Wei Ying's face, full of naked hope and a surprise so honest and pure that Wei Ying's heartstrings almost snapped. He could accept it. He could accept a friend longing for his company, even as his heart hammered against his chest like it was trying to escape its utter desolation.
"I couldn't have expected you to know something I didn't realize until much later." He hadn't realized there was tension around his friend's eyes until it relaxed.
Wei Ying took him in, his entire appearance and noted that although perfectly poised and immaculately dressed, beneath it all there was an exhaustion, a tension he didn't recognize. He thought about their meeting – the collision of two bodies launched out of their orbit – and everything else Lan Zhan had told him and a question dragged itself on his tongue that refused to be swallowed back in.
"Say, Lan Zhan… Since we are being so honest..." He asked before he could have thought better of it. "Why aren't you in Suzhou yet, for real? You always went home at least two weeks ahead of the festival. Did something happen?"
If there was something happening with Lan Zhan's family… Well, Wei Ying had missed enough opportunities to be a good friend in all the years they had been apart, or even before that. If Lan Zhan wanted to be his friend, Wei Ying was returning that tenfold. A secret for a secret, a truth for a truth.
If Lan Zhan wanted, that was.
For a second Wei Ying wasn't sure, but then the broad shoulders slumped, heaving like a weight was being lifted off them.
"I didn't always intend to go," Lan Zhan admitted. "Brother convinced me at the last moment. I wish he hadn't."
Their eyes met and Wei Ying felt a sudden heat spread through his cheeks at the intensity of Lan Zhan's gaze. He didn't take the bait, waiting patiently instead.
"I came out to my uncle. After the bar." Lan Zhan's gaze fell to the ground again, and Wei Ying already knew what he was about to say, aching dread settling painfully in his chest. "He did not… react well. He tried to set me up immediately afterwards."
"Aw man..." Wei Ying tried to sound both gentle and sympathetic without being too pitying. In his experience that never helped. "Yeah, I get that you didn't want to go home after that."
"Mn." Lan Zhan nodded, but said no more.
"Was she at least pretty?" Wei Ying tried to joke, unable to bear that forlorn expression on Lan Zhan's face and incapable of thinking of anything better to cheer his friend up. It would have been easy in the past, but now, with years containing entire lifetimes between them he didn't know anymore how to make Lan Zhan laugh.
But then Lan Zhan's lips twitched a little, so maybe not all was lost.
"Luo Qingyang," he answered, like Wei Ying was supposed to know the vaguely familiar name. Lan Zhan responded to his confused frown with his own and went on to explain. "You were in the drama club together. She was… Juliet. To your Romeo."
Very few guys had been in the drama club at that time, so Wei Ying had usually gotten the main male protagonist. He had loved it. It had been one of the reasons why he had joined the drama club in the first place. His co-star in all of that...
"Mianmian!" He exclaimed, eyes bright with delight. "It's been ages since I've last…"...Seen her. Seen anyone, he didn't say, schooled his expression and laughed instead. "I can't believe they tried to set you up with Mianmian! How is she?"
"Mn," Lan Zhan made a small sound out agreement that amused Wei Ying, before he answered. "She is well. Studying. Also law. She will take the bar next year."
"All of you are so smart…" Wei Ying chuckled, fond with more memories. "You know I made out with her once?" He promptly laughed at Lan Zhan's expression. "Relax, it wasn't as good as with you."
Their eyes met again and Wei Ying saw something like hope spark in Lan Zhan's eyes, which…
Wei Ying stopped. He let his gaze wander around, collecting his thoughts. He startled as he realized he was almost home, the agonizing minutes he usually needed reduced to nothing in the presence of his friend. The ache that had gnawed at his limbs earlier had all but disappeared, replaced by a longing ache in his heart.
"Lan Zhan," he found himself speaking without the input of his mind. "You said you liked me, so you should know… I don't intend to have surgery." He saw Lan Zhan open his mouth, probably to assure him once more of his pure intentions, which Wei Ying didn't need to hear. "I know, I know, you have no expectations, and I'm not saying we have to, but… My feelings for you never changed. I still like you, but I'm also… I'm a man Lan Zhan, but I'm not adjusting my body. Not to that degree."
"Is it a financial issue?" Lan Zhan asked after a pause and Wei Ying cut him off before he could continue with something ridiculous like an offer to pay.
"It's… not not about money, but…" He thought for a moment about how to say what he wanted to say. "Regardless of that, I refuse to go through all the legal hoops that this government would demand of me, like I'm supposed to beg them just to be who I am. And... Besides that…" He took a deep breath. "I think I'd like to have another child."
"Another…" There was a strangled sound, which he ignored, forcing himself to voice what he'd been struggling to put into words for a while now.
"I want to give it one more try. Voluntarily," Wei Ying found it difficult to say, despite the thought of a baby in his arms filling him with a warmth he wouldn't have expected mere years ago. "With someone I actually like this time."
"This time." There was something very wrong with the tone of Lan Zhan's voice, and as Wei Ying looked up at him, realization hit him with the force of a freight train.
"Oh! Oh no!" Lan Zhan's eyes were akin to saucers, and Wei Ying vaguely thought he had never seen his friend express shock so openly. "Fuck, I'm so dumb! Of course you don't know! How would you know?!"
Of course that very same moment, before Lan Zhan had any chance of collecting himself, a cheerful shout echoed through the street in an all too familiar, youthful voice. "BABA!!!"
Wei Ying winced. In the way life usually was – his life in particular – before Wei Ying could come up with a single word of explanation, there was the flurry of movement, and a warmth enveloping his leg – the better one.
"Baba, baba, you're home!"
Wei Ying's eyes fell down to the source of the excited noise to have two mischievous gray eyes reflected back at him. An unbidden smile spread on his face.
"A-Yuan!" He shifted around a little until he could safely run his fingers through the child's hair, even as he was keenly aware of the man next to him. "Have you been waiting for me?"
There was a twinkle and a nod, his very own baby's face beaming up at him with unabashed adoration. A tiny hand wrapped itself around his wrist and just like that the last of the day's stress fell away. He looked back at Lan Zhan. It was difficult to describe the expression his friend was giving him, frozen with disbelief, shock and something too close to horror, as his mind seemed to be rearranging and reevaluating every piece of information known to him. Finding no point in delaying the inevitable, Wei Ying braced himself and went for it.
"Lan Zhan, this is a-Yuan. He's mine. Gave birth to him and all." He made a point to smile, although Lan Zhan's expression remained unchanged. Deciding to give him the space he needed to get himself together, Wei Ying turned his attention back to his child. "A-Yuan, this is Lan Zhan. He's an old friend of mine from school. Want to introduce yourself?"
"Hello!" A-Yuan said before Wei Ying even finished the sentence. "I'm a-Yuan and I'm already four years old! I like butterflies and bunnies! Baba gave me Radish and a coloring book for my birthday. I was four last month! I love my baba bestest! But I love xiao-shushu und Qing-guma and granny and uncle Shi lotsa too!"
It was an altogether perfect introduction, and Wei Ying felt pride and love thrumming through his heart with a strength he hadn't believed to be possible. He watched the mental math behind Lan Zhan's eyes, a complicated expression spreading on his friend's face. He decided to give him another moment to complete the mental calculations and focused on something else that a-Yuan had reminded him of.
"Speaking of, where's your xiao-shushu?" Wei Ying looked around, then with growing suspicion back at the child still wrapped around his leg. "Did you ditch him again?"
Mischief spread on a-Yuan's face as he hid in Wei Ying's thigh.
"A-Yuan." Wei Ying narrowed his eyes at him, gently scolding. "We've talked about this. No walking around on your own. What if something happened?"
"But I'm with you," came the simple answer. "I have to help you walk. You said! To help you walk I have to take your hand. I saw you and gege wasn't holding your hand, so I came to help."
"Ah, so filial, a-Yuan…" Wei Ying looked up to the skies, silently begging the heavens for strength while fighting a ferocious blush. This child of his was as much a blessing as he was a huge trouble. The best kind of trouble, if Wei Ying was honest.
"A-Yuan!"
He was still busy trying to change his smile into something more stern, when as if on cue the uncle in question appeared around the corner, calling for his nephew, looking just as frantic as Wei Ying expected him to be. He waited for Wen Ning's eyes to find them, before he looked back down at a-Yuan.
"See how worried Wen Ning is? You can't do this, a-Yuan." The child's expression fell. "Go tell him you're alright and apologize for running away."
A-Yuan didn't waste a single second, rocketing towards his uncle with an excited call.
With his child safe in the most dependable arms that there were, Wei Ying turned to Lan Zhan again. His friend's eyes were closed, face pulled into a tight expression, lips pressed into a thin line, all of which told him what conclusion Lan Zhan had reached.
"It was part of the reason," Wei Ying said, because he knew Lan Zhan would never ask and he wanted his friend to know. "But it wasn't all of it."
Lan Zhan's eyes opened, his look agonized but not pitying, Wei Ying realized.
"There were many things going on," he said. "It was all so fucked up… I knew I couldn't keep him, and somehow I figured… Might as well go together. In the end we both survived, funny that."
"The father. The father is…" Lan Zhan trailed off, couldn't bring himself to say the name, but he didn't have to. Just as Wei Ying didn't have to answer other than with a rueful smile. After all, there was only one option. Lan Zhan drew a deep breath. "Was it… Did he…"
Here too, Wei Ying knew what he was asking, felt it like the edge of a knife against his skin.
"I don't want to talk about it." He swallowed, a prickling at the corners of his eyelids. "Not yet, at least. I'll tell you the story another time."
Lan Zhan nodded. Worried his jaw. Wei Ying waited.
"Was that why you… left?" His voice was so quiet that if Wei Ying wasn't paying attention, he probably wouldn't have noticed he had said anything at all.
"To put it in the words of aunt Yu, whores aren't welcome under her roof. She threatened to leave uncle Jiang, if he kept supporting me. It's fine," he added quickly when he saw Lan Zhan's face darkening. "Uncle Jiang gave me the trust fund he had for me, which wasn't little, I have a job and I get some aid from the government too. There's also granny's pension and everyone else is working. You don't have to worry, Lan Zhan, we get by."
Lan Zhan looked like he wanted to say something cutting, but luckily they were interrupted by Wen Ning joining them, a-Yuan in his arms. He was probably getting too big for that, but he knew first hand that Wen Ning could lift a full-sized adult without breaking a sweat so he wasn't very worried for either of them.
"Wei-ge, welcome home," Wen Ning greeted him. His eyes wandered to Lan Zhan for a brief moment, then to Wei Ying's hands which were still scraped. "Is everything alright?"
"More than!" Wei Ying ignored the look, grinning and watched a-Yuan beam at him. "Everything's perfect, look who I met in town! You remember Lan Zhan, right? He was in the same class with Wen Qing. Turns out he works here!"
Wei Ying managed to say all of that in one breath before he even realized he was doing it, yet consciously leaving out the bar and without bothering to detail exactly how the 'bumping' went down. Wen Ning took it all in, then gave Lan Zhan a polite smile, his dark eyes meeting Lan Zhan's squarely.
"I know of Lan-xianbei," he said slowly, cautiously polite, before his expression settled into a smile and he inclined his head in greeting. "We've never met officially."
There was a brief round of long overdue introductions, which Wei Ying was happy to ignore in favor of watching a-Yuan grow increasingly fascinated with Lan Zhan. It etched the lines around Wei Ying's smile deeper into his features, in a way he hasn't felt for a long time.
"A-Yuan." he couldn't help but pinch one of the chubby cheeks, after a little shifting of weight. "You keep looking at Lan Zhan like that, he'll think you like him."
"Pretty gege," was all a-Yuan had to say to that, a smile splitting his face, while Lan Zhan's ears turned red. Wei Ying laughed, alight with surprise that the one tell-tale sign of his shyness still remained. Lan Zhan was looking at a-Yuan with increasing curiosity, that pained line from earlier disappearing from his features, slowly replaced by wonder instead.
Wei Ying only looked away when he felt a tiny finger poke at his cheek, angling his head towards a-Yuan to listen to whatever secret his son wanted to share.
"Will pretty gege stay for dinner?" A-Yuan whispered through his hands, causing a complicated set of feelings to run through Wei Ying's chest.
"Sorry, sweetheart, but Lan-shushu can't stay." Wei Ying mock pouted at his son. "He has a flight to catch later."
"Why?" A-Yuan asked, as he did all the time.
"He has to visit his family," Wei Ying answered.
"Oh…" A-Yuan's face fell. There was no doubt in Wei Ying's mind had the answer been anything else, he would have kept asking, but if there was one word a-Yuan understood better than anyone, it was 'family'. It didn't mean he liked it. "But… But I heard! I heard that we will have a party tonight! I cleaned my room, and I did a picture for teacher, and helped granny bake! I was the bestest and uncle said I could stay up extra long tonight 'cause then baba would live forever!"
"I didn't say forever," Wen Ning corrected him timidly, but neither of them paid attention to him, the poor soul. A-Yuan only heard what he wanted to hear, and Wei Ying was too busy making sure his heart didn't burst. He still sometimes couldn't quite believe how much he loved this child.
"Me too." It came unexpectedly from beside him, and when Wei Ying turned to look he found Lan Zhan looking almost as surprised as he felt. "I mean, I also usually stay up longer on Chuxi."
A-Yuan's smile eclipsed the sun. Lan Zhan returned it with an expression so impossibly soft that Wei Ying's heart almost did burst then.
"Pretty gege can stay, and his family can come too, and I will draw everyone a picture!" A-Yuan all but vibrated with bare excitement that Wei Ying felt bad that he had to chide him.
"A-Yuan, do we tell people what they can and can't do, or do we ask?" He had picked the gentlest way possible, but his son still hid his face in his uncle's neck, utterly dejected.
To be fair, Lan Zhan looked rather stricken himself. It was adorable to watch and Wei Ying… Wei Ying knew that no matter whatever feelings he might be harboring, he only came as a set with his son. There was no possible way of heaping that responsibility on another person from the get go, on top of everything else, and yet. And yet. Lan Zhan was regarding a-Yuan with such fondness that it did strange things to Wei Ying's heart, and just like that courage bloomed in Wei Ying's chest.
"How about a compromise? Lan Zhan," he asked carefully. "You still have a few hours left until you have to be at the airport, don't you? Would you… Would you like to come inside?"
"Yes, yes, yes! Please, pretty gege, pretty please." A-Yuan loved the idea, immediately reaching his arms out in silent demand to be held. Wei Ying could only watch as Wen Ning oh so carefully leaned forward and tightened his hold so that a-Yuan could safely launch himself into Lan Zhan's open, waiting arms. He bet Lan Zhan hadn't even noticed how he held them out in a response that had seemed completely automatic.
"A-Yuan," Wei Ying reprimanded him gently, doing everything he could to ignore the adorable pout that pressed into Lan Zhan's shoulder. It was difficult to do with his heart singing like that.
"I would hate to intrude," Lan Zhan replied hesitantly, his eyes not leaving a-Yuan for a second and Wei Ying felt his heart constrict.
"I don't think anyone would mind," Wen Ning said, smiling gently.
"It won't be an issue, Lan Zhan, really." Their eyes met. "We still have a lot to… catch up on."
There was a spark that darkened Lan Zhan's eyes briefly, something heavy settling in the air between the two of them. Chance had brought Lan Zhan back into his life, and Wei Ying wanted to hold on. In any way he was allowed to. As long as he was allowed to.
"And you could meet… You could meet my family." Warmth spread deep in Wei Ying's chest as the word 'family' echoed in his mind, before he added in a whisper. "If you like."
"Wei Ying…" Finally, after what felt like an entire eternity, Lan Zhan spoke, the softest of smiles spreading on his face, gentle as the first rays of the sun on a misty morning. "I would very much love to meet your family."
"Great!" Wei Ying felt the smile split his face from one ear to another and amidst the cheers of his child that echoed the ones in his heart and started towards the door that Wen Ning held open for him. "Come on in then! Let's give everyone the shock of their life that I brought home such a handsome man!"
"Wei Ying…" It was spoken as a reprimand but it sounded like a chuckle.
"Hi, handsome! You're Lan Zhan, right? I've heard all about you!" Somewhere in his memory a cheerful voice greeted the most beautiful youth that there ever was. "I'm Wei Wuxian. I'll let you call me Wei Ying."
The door fell shut to the sound of Wei Ying's laugh.

MDZS x FFX AU (1) (2)
Okay. More on WWX and his Guardian party.
So Sin coming back coincides with Jin Ling being born, and WWX needs his Shijie to have a happy and healthy baby. That and JC implied he might do it, Madame Yu said absolutely not, and JFM implied he might do it, and WWX saw all this and was like "Okay, yeah I will do it." And he tells Wen Qing and Wen Ning and they all go down to the Lotus Pier summoning chamber and WWX prays real hard and becomes a Summoner.
Jiang Cheng doesn't join the party until later in the game, but as soon as he figures out what WWX is planning, he goes down to stop him. But it's too late, and he's pissed, and he doesn't go to send WWX off. He feels guilty about it, because that's his brother going off on a suicide mission. So eventually he goes off to join WWX's party.
Okay so. Let's say that Nightless City got fucked by Sin. The Wen Sect is scattered. Wen Chao plans on becoming the next High Summoner to restore honor to the Wen Sect. Well. He didn't plan to do that, WRH planned for him to do that. WZL is his guardian. WRH also planned on sending WQ and WN off as a Summoner Guardian duo, but they ran off to WWX before he could make them. WWX keeps them safe, and then when he decides to become a summoner, they stick by him. They do this so that their elderly relatives will not be endangered.
Wen Qing is team healer, she doesn't want to go on the Pilgrimage, but she knows Wen Ning will go with WWX, so she has to make sure they don't end up dead.
Wen Ning decides to be WWX's guardian as soon as WWX says he's going to become a summoner. He doesn't want WWX to do this but he knows he can't stop him once he's made up his mind, so he will stand by WWX's side.
Lan Zhan joins the party when WWX comes to Gusu. They of course meet on a wall with WWX breaking some rules. Lan Zhan is like "get out, you're breaking rules and we have visiting summoners." And WWX is like "excuse you, I am a visiting summoner, I didn't know I was breaking rules so you can just forget about this, right?" And LWJ looks at WWX and he doesn't know why he feels so sad that the world may lose this person soon. While he's caught up in that WWX tries to sneak off but LWJ doesn't just let him go. WWX does eventually get away and back with his Wens, and in the morning, they go to grab that new summon. LWJ is keeping a close eye on him, up until WWX enters the temple.
Lan Zhan isn't a big fan of this whole cycle of death thing. Gusu Lan has had many High Summoners come out of this. Lan An and Lan Yi, and Qingheng Jun. No one would tell him how his mother, one of his father's guardians, died. Lan Qiren was in Yiling 20 years ago when it happened as a guardian, but never speaks of it.
When WWX comes back out, Lan Zhan feels this need to join WWX. To keep him from breaking the rules at other sect temples, nothing else, nope.
WWX is like "no" but LWJ just stares him down until WWX finally gives in, but WWX is like "I'm kind of a lot, so I won't blame you if you decide to ditch by the next temple." But Lan Zhan was already whipped. No wait--
Okay so NHS and his homies manage to kidnap WWX to prevent him from making the sacrifice, and WWX is like "okay but if I do it, your brother won't have to." And NHS is like "hm. Fair point." And by the time WWX's guardians come, WWX and NHS are drinking and talking about art. NHS joins the party.
LWJ and NHS start plotting because the whole Sin Cycle is suspicious and there has to be a better way.

hello! do you know of any fanfics where they meet and fall in love during summer vacation (or just on a vacation in general)? Any age is good! Thank you so much for all you do :)
Hello nonny!
Here’s fics with “Wangxian falling in love on vacation” 💕 :
you go your way (i'll go your way, too) by fakeplasticlily (52K, Explicit)
(Modern AU, Fashion Bloggers AU, Social Media Influencers, Travel, Pining, UST, Falling In Love, Humor)
Wei Ying licks his suddenly dry lips, and continues. “It’s all petty drama, really, and you’ll probably think it’s stupid, hah...” He scratches his head, feeling extremely self-conscious.
“It must have meant a lot to you,” says Lan Zhan, firmly. “And to the people who followed you.”
The people who followed him? More like that single person. His chest fills with warmth as he thinks abruptly of bunny130809 and his bunny icon and his earnest, awkward, achingly sweet words.
“Well, anyway,” Wei Ying says, eager to move on from the subject. It’s making him dizzy, the way Lan Zhan’s voice keeps bleeding into his old follower’s typed words. He’s probably just projecting, and that must say something about him, right? Had there been only two persons in all this time who’d been patient enough to really listen to him, for them to mesh together so seamlessly in his head?
Operation Old Men by Chiharu (38K, Not Rated)
(Modern AU, Boarding School, Single Parents, Matchmaking, Family Dynamics, Reunion, School Reunion, Vacation, Weddings)
An ill-fated parent teacher conference reunites Jin Ling's wayward uncle with Sizhui's father. AKA: A matchmaking disaster as told by Jin Ling, Sizhui, and Jingyi.
Jin Ling knows he’s in deep trouble even before reporting to Headmaster Lan’s office, but the words “your uncle will be here soon” still strike the fear of God in him. His only consolation is that Jingyi and Sizhui’s guardians are also in the office, Jingyi’s mom already lecturing her sheepish-looking son. Lan-ayi only stops when Sizhui’s father, a quiet and tall man in white, clears his throat, causing her to engage him in one-sided smalltalk.
This is a disaster. Jin Ling had spent such a nice break at home for Mid-Autumn Festival, and Fairy’s presence had soothed his homesickness after returning to boarding school in Gusu. He knows pets aren’t allowed, but who is going to report Jin Ling when his father pays good money for a private suite in the dorms? Then there was the incident with Jingyi, a box of mooncakes, and a door left ajar. Long story short, he spent an hour chasing Fairy down the halls with Sizhui and Jingyi before finding his dog nosing up to a very angry Headmaster Lan.
AND, they were roommates by girasolove (56+K, Teen, WIP 12/?)
(Modern AU, Roommates, Slow Burn, Friends to Lovers, Oblivious!WWX, Drunk!LWJ, Pining)
Wei Wuxian accidentally tells Madame Yu he has a boyfriend when he doesn't.
When she invites his boyfriend to their annual family Christmas trip, he has no choice but to find a pretend boyfriend for one week. Enter his roommate, Lan Wangji. He's the perfect candidate...and Wei Wuxian totally does not have a crush on him. Totally.
(Oh my god, they were roommates)
12 Days of Summer by stellarmusings (20+K, Teen, WIP 6/15)
(Modern AU, Summer Vacation, Family Dynamics, Single Parents, Slow Burn, Getting Together)
"Thank you for spending your morning with me, Lan Zhan," he says, lips stretching into a small smile. "I know you don't really like the heat, but I had fun with you."
"I don't mind it when it's with Wei Ying," he admits truthfully. He really dislikes hot days, but the sight of Wei Wuxian against the turquoise water of the ocean and white sand is something he will treasure forever.
or:
Lan Wangji might not be the most affectionate father, but he still loves his son very much. After a particularly stressful school year, he decides to take Sizhui on his first proper family trip as a reward, even though Wangji himself couldn't care less about summer. Jingyi and Xichen come along, and they eventually find themselves at the Lotus Pier Resort.
Wangji just didn't expect to find a familiar face there, which he hasn't seen in many, many years.
Suddenly, summer doesn't seem to be that bad.

Hello! I'm new to the fandom, and I want to start reading fics, could you please let me know which fanfic is THE FANFIC of The Untamed/Mo Dao Zu SHi (MDZS)??? You know, that one fic EVERYONE know and everyone has read
Oh, dear.  I’m really not plugged so much into the fandom, so I miss a lot of that kind of chatter.  Here are a few (completed), favorite stories just off the top of my head.  (The concept of the fandom story to read makes me feel balky, because it’s like being asked to choose your favorite child.  I love all of them, and some just appeal to me more on some days than others.)
modern au:

gently, we fall
... ... ...
Meeting old ‘friends’, featuring...
Lan Wangji, Lan Yuan, Wei Wuxian.
So apparently this won’t be in chronological order, necessarily. The power of WangXian is just too strong.
... ... ...
Wei Wuxian’s grave is empty now but Lan Wangji still visits every year without fail. A night rarely passes that Lan Wangji doesn’t dream back to the day when a grand celebration had become a nightmare.
The Jiang siblings waiting eagerly for Wei Wuxian’s arrival, news of Jin Zixuan going to check the situation, Lan Wangji rushing after him, a tendril of unease tugging at his heart.
Yet...
Too late, always too late. Now, Lan Wangji is left with nothing but memories to cling to.
He is thankful for little A-Yuan, though — Lan Yuan. Teaching him and looking after him is a good distraction and he genuinely cares for the child, as well. And...even though Lan Yuan’s time under Wei Wuxian’s wing was short, Lan Wangji sees a little of that bright youth in him, he likes to think. A connection to cherish.
Besides, thanks to A-Yuan, Lan Wangji has a valid reason to visit Lotus Pier.
In the aftermath, eight years ago, Lan Wangji had been the first person to speak out for the remaining Wens on the Burial Mounds. Jiang Wanyin, surprisingly, had joined his ranks. He must’ve simply been opposing everything Jin Guangshan wanted, at that point. It didn’t matter. Anything to protect what Wei Ying left behind.
The Wens ended up under Gusu Lan’s protection, given a small plot of land near the outskirts of their territory. Afterwards, when Lan Wangji had accompanied them safely to their new home, Wen Qing approached him with a familiar child in her arms.
One last favour, she asked of him. A-Yuan couldn’t learn much with the Wens. And if the Lan Sect didn’t mind, let him take their name. It’ll be easier for him, Wen Qing said, pragmatic as always.
Lan Wangji agreed readily.
...
The first time Lan Wangji goes to Lotus Pier, it is the seventh day of Wei Ying’s death. The funeral rituals are elaborate and complete, befitting of a sect leader’s son. As Gusu Lan’s esteemed Second Young Master, Lan Wangji is allowed to play Inquiry. There is no answer.
“Xian-gege isn’t coming back?” A-Yuan asks, eyes glossy with tears. “But why? I miss him.”
Lan Wangji tightens his hands around the little bundle of warmth in his lap and whispers, “So do I.” He doesn’t know if they’ll be welcome here again.
But Jiang Yanli, still pale and swollen-eyed with grief, spots A-Yuan and takes an immediate liking to him. She smiles gently up at Lan Wangji and asks him to bring A-Yuan to visit.
“Come often, as much as A-Yuan would like. I’m sure he will get along with A-Ling.”
And so every year, at least once, Lan Wangji has a perfect excuse to return to Wei Ying’s home. Every year, he plays Inquiry. Every year, there is no answer.
Then, three years ago, news of grave robbers defiling the Yiling Patriarch’s grave spread across the cultivation world. Lan Wangji feels a scorching anger. And so he had another reason to visit Yunmeng.
...
This year’s investigation has also been fruitless so far, but Lan Wangji is not on official business this visit. Lan Yuan is with him.
Lotus Pier’s doorkeepers spot him and greet him in a practiced way. One of them goes to inform their sect leader but Lan Wangji is allowed to go in right away. Young Madam Jin — also Lotus Pier’s Eldest Lady — is expecting them today.
Lan Wangji hears from the servants that Jiang Yanli is still occupied with a last minute matter so he decides to visit Wei Wuxian first.
It’s a well-trodden path.
But this time, on the way there, he hears a certain melody...he thinks he must be hallucinating. The melody fades as he keeps heading towards his original destination but A-Yuan tugs on his sleeve.
“Hanguang-jun, who was playing the flute? It was such a pretty melody.”
Lan Wangji turns and runs in the opposite direction. Poor Lan Yuan has to sprint to catch up.
He’s there, resting on the lowest branch of an old tree. His eyes are closed, though not covered, and Chenqing rests in his lap. For Lan Wangji, it’s as if time as flown backwards to a certain warm afternoon. He walks forward, entranced, and gets close enough to touch the black cloth draping down among the leaves. He cannot believe his eyes but he would recognize Wei Ying’s face anywhere. He sees it often enough in dreams.
Wei Wuxian seems to sense a presence nearby and slowly opens his eyes. He is visibly taken aback by his visitor’s identity but Lan Wangji speaks first, for once, the words tumbling out of his mouth in a rush.
“Wei Ying!”
“Ah, Lan Zhan. I didn’t expect to see you here.” His smile is dazzling like no time has passed. But he looks down and says, “...That hurts a little.”
Unconsciously, Lan Wangji had taken Wei Wuxian’s wrist in his hand, gripping hard. But Lan Wangji doesn’t let go upon realizing. A frown grows on Wei Wuxian’s face.
“Impressive. After all this time, Hanguang-jun’s first instinct is to drag this demonic cultivator back to Gusu?” he says, voice cold.
Lan Wangji’s breath catches.
“N-no, Wei Ying, I...” But his stumbling denial is interrupted by a youthful voice, tear-filled and hopeful.
“Wei-qianbei! Is it really you? Are you Wei Wuxian, Wei-qianbei?”
Bewildered, WWX turns to the speaker. “You...you’re...?”
“I’m A-Yuan! Wei-qianbei remembers A-Yuan, right? Xian-gege! Both A-Yuan and Hanguang-jun missed you very much!” The person in front of him matches the figure in his memories and, coupled with Hanguang-jun’s reaction, there’s no doubt left in the ten-year-old’s mind.
It’s Wei Wuxian’s turn to be stunned. The hand clamped on his wrist is forgotten as he leans forward.
“You’re A-Yuan?” Before he can say anything more, Jiang Cheng’s voice thunders out from a distance.
“Wei Wuxian! Didn’t I tell you to stay inside?! You’re not recovered yet from the last time —  do you want A-Jie to worry?! How old are you that you still need a babysitter, huh—?!” He stops dead when he spots the visitors. “...Hanguang-jun. I’ve been remiss in my welcome. Please join us in the great hall.”
“...No matter.”
Wei Wuxian, with great timing, loses his balance and falls out of his perch with a small yelp.
“Ah! Xian-gege!”
He lands in a sturdy hold. Eyes lock and a strange feeling rises.
The moment passes when Jiang Cheng clears his throat.
“Ahem. Thanks for catching me, Hanguang-jun. Would’ve been an ugly sight if I landed on my butt. Haha.”
Lan Wangji stares at him and there’s something unreadable in those light amber eyes. “No need for thanks,” Lan Wangji says. He makes to follow Jiang Cheng’s retreating back.
“H-hey, wait!”
Lan Wangji stops again and looks back down at Wei Wuxian.
“...You can put me down, you know?”
Lan Wangji blinks and, after a second, slowly sets Wei Wuxian back down on his feet.
“My apologies.”
“Uh—“ Wei Wuxian stares as Lan Wangji continues walking, his footsteps quick and strangely stiff. Beside him, A-Yuan takes a hold of Wei Wuxian’s sleeve.
“Wow, Hanguang-jun’s ears are so red!”
“...”
... ... ...
These drabbles are becoming longer than I’d expected... But don’t expect them to stay this way lol.
So Wei Wuxian already knows about the Wens but he didn’t know that the Lans took in A-Yuan. Why didn’t the Jiang siblings tell him? Jiang Cheng doesn’t care and Jiang Yanli...well, who knows? ;P
Lan Yuan is around 10 right now, so he isn’t usually called by his courtesy name yet. This is my own design since the MDZS verse didn’t really clarify this aspect. A quick search tells me there’s some record that men got their courtesy name at adulthood, at age 20 (correct me if this is wrong), which obviously isn’t the case in MDZS.
Even though Jin Ling had his name picked out before birth, and in the audio drama LWJ had picked “Sizhui” soon after he brought him back, I’m setting it so they aren’t actually given the names until later.
In GWF verse, there’s lots of flexibility regarding courtesy names, but it’s generally given around age 12.  Why 12? Because Reasons.
... ... ...
Next time: jumping back to WWX returning to Lotus Pier and expanding on the aftermath of his death.
Maybe. Subject to mind changing and interest.

Hahaha on the one hand, I feel you, because that IS the cruelest 'after breakup' exchange between Wwx and Lgj, but on the other hand, I loooove that episode because it showcases how dark Wwx could have become (for a hot second it seems he really has gone full demonic, but quickly enough there are hints that's not the case)
Actually I wrote a post about ep 20 back when I first watched it, where I said this bit: My favorite part in ep 20 was that damn aggresive word exchange with Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan. Good heavens, it was BRUTAL, using their formal names, then scattingly using their given names, then virtually slapping Lan Zhan warnings away. Buuuuurn!
It's not that I liked them being at odds with each other, but it seemed to me a bit of necessary plot and character development, without this brutal exchange that hinted at the possibility of them being enemies/fighting each other in the future, it would have less impact the other bits like Wwx saying he was okay with being killed by Lgj or Lgj future regrets of not standing beside Wwx 16 years ago, thus Lgj taking a stand with Wwx against all other clans and Jin GuangYa
It IS a great scene! I love that they did it and didn’t hold back AT ALL, but I also have a full on physical nope reaction to it for some reason (to a hilarious degree where I always scroll faster if I see gifs from it on my dash 😂). I’m going to have to brave it at some point, since we’re going to watch this with my sister (slowly, since it’s hard to find time together, she is amazingly resistant to binging btw), and at least once for writing ref.
I’m thinking WWX must have decided beforehand that he was going to do it, it wasn’t just a spur of the moment thing, because from his reaction immediately after we know it’s an act. And it makes sense, because he has a massive thing he’s hiding, and he (probably correctly) deduced LWJ is the most likely person to figure it out if given a chance. After all, LWJ cares enough to notice that something’s going on, more than just general youthful arrogance most people who don’t know WWX think it is, AND he’s unlikely to buy the vague reassurances/excuses the way Jiang Cheng and Yanli are willing to. It’s a logical plan with the fatal flaw that WWX isn’t actually able to stick to it for more than five minutes because he just missed LWJ, which leads to the push and pull between them that lasts for the rest of his first life.
