Hey people, so I was trying to find out a way of immersing myself in mecha even more and I settled on the idea of making funny little reviews about the gundam kits I've built on my blog so here it is tee hee

(Very minor spoilers for Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury season 1 episode 6 ahead)

I present to you:

Demi Trainer A.K.A baby's first gundam kit

This is what kickstarted my addiction to building these little guys and honestly it was such a blast as my first experience with it! I saw the HG (1/144) model of this mobile suit in a nerd shop I was in that I was told had these kits and I figured it was a good starting point. I liked the idea of the training mech from g-witch acting as training wheels for me building these kits.

Fun Facts About the Demi Trainer

the MSJ-121 Demi Trainer is a mobile suit seen in The Witch From Mercury series, and is primarily used by students in Asticassia as a mobile suit to train with (hence the name Demi Trainer)

The Demi Trainer is just one model in a series of other Demi mobile suits! Other Demi models we see throughout the series are the MSJ-OP122 Demi Garrison (seen early on when Suletta Mercury's Gundam Aerial is being detained after her first duel), the MSJ-R122 Demi Barding, which is a more advanced model of mobile suit, equipped with more armaments, while still maintaining the Demi model philosophy. There's also Chuchu's iconic MSJ-105CC Demi Trainer, which is an older model that has been heavily modified by Chuchu in order to compete with more modern iterations of Demi mobile suits.

Our primary experience with Demi Trainer in the show is when Suletta Mercury is tasked with piloting one as part of her spotting exam, where she has a particularly difficult time passing it. It honestly made me feel really sad when I watched it for the first time :(

The Design of Demi Trainer

I really love how this mobile suit looks! It's a very simple design but I feel it's so effective at conveying it's primary purpose: to be a baseline training model for mobile suits. It's a lightweight mobile suit with minimal modifications done to it so that it can achieve high mobility and it's easy to maintain. It also looks very much like something a company would mass-produce for an institution like Asticassia.

Demi Trainers are used with a standard set of equipment, which includes a simple shield, a beam gun for ranged combat, a saber stick for melee combat, a combat knife, as well as the Daedalus multi-tool, which can be shaped and transformed into a variety of tools. This makes Demi Trainer a very versatile mobile suit, appropriate for use in many different situations. It doesn't seem to come with any sort of flight module, though that makes sense, as I imagine those are quite expensive to include on mobile suits, and this is meant as a simple trainer mech.

Of course, since it's heavily used in Asticassia, Demi Trainer also has an equipable antenna module for use in duels within the academy.

The Demi mobile suits are known for their extensive customisability, and the Demi Trainer is no different! You can even see these aspects within the design of this mobile suit. There are many little slots and places where you can modify Demi Trainer and potentially add modules or armaments, and you can see the extent of this modification in Chuchu's modified Demi Trainer, despite it being an older model. I'd really love to see what kind of modifications other student in the academy would apply to their Demi Trainers!

Building the Kit

My experience with building this gunpla kit was a blast! I was so excited to get started on this, and the kit did not disappoint! It wasn't too complex so that I was overwhelmed, but it also wasn't so simple that I was bored. Hearing all the clicks and feeling the pieces snap together as I built it was extremely satisfying, and I really like how the instruction booklet was structured.

You're not told to put individual parts of the mobile suit together until you've built a number of modules beforehand. For example, the instructions tell you to build the head, body and arms before telling you to put those parts together, and I think that makes the experience more satisfying. The same structure applies for the waist and legs of the kit, and being able to put all of the parts together at the end is such a good feeling! Of course, you can totally ignore the structure of the booklet and put parts together as you build them, which is also fine.

The kit also comes with a variety of stickers, and with the help of hindsight after having built 2 more kits after this one (which I also plan on reviewing), I can confidently say that the stickers for the Demi Trainer are probably the easiest to apply based on my limited experience! You get a small choice of stickers too, mainly a choice of what colour you want the middle torso portion to be. Of course, I picked purple because it's my favourite colour, but other choices also include red, blue, yellow and pink.

At one point while building this kit, I tried to take a part out so I could hear and feel the click of it again as I assembled it, but I accidentally applied too much force into it and the piece snapped, which make me panic but thankfully I had some glue to repair it, which was a huge relief. Not a fault of the kit itself, just my own excitement getting the better of me! Though I will recommend to be careful when assembling these kits if you're not experienced, and be gentle with them.

I was so so happy when the kit was finished and I could play around with it! Building it is half the fun, and the other half is posing it in all sorts of cool ways! You've seen some pictures of that already, but I also have some gifs of the kit spinning on a little turntable saved for the end.

The HG Demi Trainer kit comes with just the shield, saber stick and beam gun that I mentioned previously, which I personally don't mind too much but of course having more options for equipment is always a good thing. Thankfully you can buy an expansion set for Demi Trainer that includes a beam rifle, gatling gun, combat knife, 4-cell hand missile launcher and open hand parts, as well as some smaller extras. I personally don't have this expansion kit but I would love to get it at some point!

Overall, I think this is a fantastic kit to build, particularly if you are new to gunpla and are looking for a place to start. The Witch From Mercury kits are some of the best quality I think I've seen in gunpla (again, from my limited experience) and if you love the series and want to collect gunpla, you can't go wrong with getting this kit. The posable nature and movement of the kit itself is great, which I think is really cool and allows for some creative shots to be made with them!

Please what’s the moomin reference I’m dying to know

I've tried to write this post a Few times without going into a full essay about what moomin is, as that's Not necessary for answering the question. however, I am unfortunately me and this is the Writes Essays Blog. so I've simply decided I will be a nuisance instead.

but the plus side is that I've been thinking about writing about some of my other fandoms here for a while ! so, for a crash course on the franchise:

“moomin,” “the moomins,” or “moominvalley” is a franchise originally stemming from first novels and then comics written in the 1940s-50s by the finnish author tove jansson, which has since ballooned with Many adaptations and other such goodies (like themeparks and games).

it’s most popular adaptation is hands down the 90s anime adaptation ! which took tove’s charming designs and calming atmosphere and kicked it up to 11 with a long-form slice of life series

but all versions have their own particular flair and tone, even two versions created by tove herself are Very different. with the comics having a focus in on the absurd and comedic and the novels, while certainly Having those elements, also focus in on more serious themes and melancholy!

(here's a brief rundown for the differences in the adaptations for anyone interested ! [Link])

of course, moomin was a relatively unknown entity in the us because it never officially released here, but there was a brief boom here on tumblr in 2019 thanks to the release of a new adaption (called moominvalley)!

it was a perfect storm for a couple reasons:

1: while it can be a bit difficult to track down the series in the us, the Characters are all extremely accessible. with their designs alone you can pick up on who and what the main cast are both Quickly and Scarily Accurately, with the fandom largely rising Before most people had found access to the content itself flkjfdaskjkjl

they're Incredibly Simple characters that still lend themselves well to complexity. they aren't blank slates in the slightest, but they're easy to Bend and reimagine and flesh out. which is really appealing to fandom spaces!

2: having multiple different fleshed out iterations to choose from meant that if you looked you could most likely find something that suited your taste! (it'd be an incredibly accessible franchise if they'd actually make their content Accessible world wide)

3: this is Especially relevant in how the franchise can act as both escapism and catharsis. the 90s anime especially is a comfortable cottage-core fantasy to sink yourself into and forget the woes of real world (something that was about to become Very relevant in 2019), but the novels were specifically written for an audience that was actively living through war.

and while tove never wanted to make the franchise Dark or Gritty, she wanted to create a series that could help children process and come to terms with some of the feelings they Would realistically be experiencing. one of the very first novels is "Comet in Moominland," where a great comet is coming down to crash into the earth. it still engages with comedy and with the absurd, and of course nobody Dies, but it was very intentionally trying to create an accessible outlet to understand Tragedy and Fear. among lots of other things ! and this is, of course, tempered with the warm comforts of friends and family and community.

I think there's a lot to be gained by sifting through this franchise Now honestly. something that can both Distract from the bleakness and help process it, with a certain gentleness either way.

4: tove jansson was an Incredibly queer woman, and this absolutely bleeds into her work and the adaptations that followed!

while inspiration isn't an Exact one-to-one, tove Has spoken about her inspirations for her characters before. moomin (the character) draws a great deal from herself while snufkin, moomin's "best friend" and a funny little beastie, draws from her lovers both in personality and in relationship to moomin!

a big inspiration for snufkin was a man who had nearly been her husband, a vagabond and a socialist for that matter. the official moomin site (which is cannot stress enough, is representative of the franchise itself and heavily curated) describes That as follows [Link]:

In many ways the relationship of Moomintroll (Tove’s alter-ego) and Snufkin describes the relationship between Tove and Atos. Moomintroll admires Snufkin who still is quite distant and very often Moomintroll is also experiencing a deep sense of longing and yearning when Snufkin is leaving to his adventures or choosing to be at peace with his own thoughts. Moomintroll tries to understand Snufkin’s desire for freedom, even though the waiting is not easy.

Just like Tove admired Atos and just like Tove waited for Atos, his love confessions and commitment. [End transcription]

but it was Also based, in part, on the woman who was her wife in all but legality. [Link 1, Link 2] Having met some time 1956 and having stayed life long partners until tove's death in 2001.

they'd built a home together on an island where they'd go to stay every summer, enjoying their own travels and adventures along the way !

come winter, moomin would pine for snufkin as he made his yearly travel down south, but the spring and summer months would always bring snufkin's return! and all the love and warmth that came with him uwu

How exactly that bleeds through in the franchise itself is well. Extensive. picking literally any iteration and trying to lay out, in full, the queer themes present would be an essay longer than this one. so instead have a small selection to illustration the point:

now, naturally, this was (and is) queercoding rather than explicit representation, but this was a queer woman pushing the boundaries of what was allowed to Be in children's media starting in the 1940s and onwards.

there's something About a woman who lived a full and happy life with the woman she loved, pouring that love into her life's work to create a foundation of care and acceptance for the generation that'd come after her, only to see a resurgence of queer teens See her and say what she wasn't allowed to out loud.

which brings us to !

5: the general blanket of pure acceptance radiating from the series.

that's not necessarily anything New for a children's franchise, but in combination with everything else it creates an environment for an absolute comfort series. this fragment of an article about the series has far and away wormed it's way into my mind in some irreversible way (and that's quite a good thing) [Link]:

In most fiction, family is what you escape from if you want to fulfill yourself. For Jansson, family is a place of tolerance, where we can fail and become ourselves. Her experience of growing up gay is there in Snufkin – who is all the more loved for being different. Like the prodigal son, everyone is so thrilled to see him, no one ever asks him where he has been. It’s there too, in Too-Ticky, Jansson’s portrait of her partner. And above all it’s there in the wonderful story where Moomintroll is transformed into the bug-eyed King of California, and his mother recognises him straight away. [End transcription]

the quickest and most accurate description for this series, this franchise as a whole, that I could give is Warmth.

that's not to say that it's All roses. tove herself was an icon, but moomin company is a Company in charge of a franchise in the same ball park as disney properties. but considering there's no way to legally support moomin in the states I'd say the morality of engaging with it on that basis isn't exactly the most pressing of issues.

now with all of That out of my system: the actual information relevant to the comparison.

one of the stories in moomin (the novels, the 90s anime, and the 2019 adaptation, though I'm most familiar with the latter) is "The Invisible Child." [Link]

it's the story of ninny, an invisible child that moomin and co find and bring into their home to try to figure out Why she's invisible and how to fix it.

as we come to find out, ninny went invisible and lost her voice (even the ink on paper she tried to write on going invisible) because she'd been made to Feel invisible through the neglect of her aunt.

the moomins help ninny find her confidence again, with small aspects coming back to her as they make progress and regressing as they make missteps. but the ultimate point is that she needs to feel Seen and Heard.

that feeling of not having a voice, of not having a Presence, taking on the form of a Physical curse of invisibility.

it's a concept that meshes Extremely well with tommy's situation, even Without the headcanon.

Pre-G1 Modules, part 6: Reflections

This isn't a full on post or anything, it really is just random thoughts. This blog has basically 3 goals, in no particular order:

Show off some weird interesting ideas from older modules. This is why the bullet-point sections exist.

Look at all the obscure modules no one's ever heard and don't get discussed so they can enjoy more awareness. This is why it's module to module and not lists of cool things I've found.

Look at how modules grew as an art-form. Their design, layout, styling, writing, et c. This is why it's in release order.

So I'm going to ramble about all 3 in turn.

1. Coolest ideas

So somehow the coolest idea I ran into in this roundup was keep on the borderlands ~in the desert~. The mental image is just stuck in my brain and if you're one of my fantasy age players, you've probably inhaled some spoilers accidentally now. It's gonna show up eventually.

I was also really fond of the really lateral use of animated objects in Tegel Manor, particularly the battlefield painting that spits arrows as the events on-canvas play out. It's very fun and very goofy and I regret the yearly Samhain one-shot being so far away. I will find an excuse to use that random magic statue table eventually.

Third place goes to the pet sea monster of the invincible overlord. It's just really stuck in my brain

2. Coolest Module You Haven't Heard Of

Oh that's easy. Tegel Manor. 100% Tegel Manor. That was easily the most fun I had writing this column so far, even as the pagecount sprawled and sprawled. I think the haunted house is the single best starting location for a new player, it's part of why I'm so ride or die for Ghosts of Saltmarsh (and I do specifically mean the 5e iteration, they did an excellent job realizing Saltmarsh as a location. It's a crying shame people hate because they expect pirates and get, not pirates).

Happily, I don't think the move is actually to just, buy modern Tegel Manor. In fact, a spiritual successor to Tegel Manor would be just what the doctor ordered.

3. The Growth of Module Design

I am telling on myself hard but my favorite part of watching this go on is to see the art of keying slowly evolve and standardize around the familiar model of today. We are far away from the, I know I will get crucified for this, frankly better keying of 5e. Or even the significantly improved keying of 4e. We are in crusty-ass 1970s keying, where if it was typed, it was professional. Honestly Temple of the Frog's keying is a shockingly good first attempt. The keying solution that Vampire Queen went for is, kind of novel in its own way. I kind of wish that this table-style keying had stuck around as a sort of summary page for quick reference, it's…honestly kind of convenient, especially for particularly hack and slashy campaigns.

Watching JG recover from their tailspin of excessive loot was really fascinating. I do keep in mind that weight was a big thing about loot recovery in early DND but what exactly was to stop a party from just going back in and looting the place over and over again, anyway? Sure the monsters could move around, the loot could move, but they still know the layout. I really feel like you have to simply not provide that much treasure, and I get the sense JG worked that out too.

Finally, I am just kind of happy to see the focus on creating dungeons, as in combat rectangles is already starting to be threatened as the status quo. Arneson obviously understood why this was bad, and you can see some designers working it out too. Holmes also had a very good grasp of pacing and dungeon layout that it would take others (including Gygax) a while to catch up to.

Are Snaptrappers this mystical, well-beloved dragon? Everyone’s asking!

Well, some of it may be speculation but the link I’ve referred the past two people to is this. The original post is by @i-hate-spitelout-jorgenson, and I just added on during this blog’s shadowban (so via my main). So, please, credit the OP as well for this info-dump. I’ve been referring everyone back to an iteration of their post, after all.

I may as well abbreviate what I’d said and what they’d said:

What they’d said:

At least some point, each dragon from TBoD was featured in the shows with the exception of the Timberjack and Snaptrapper. However, the former was seen in the background of HTTYD2 as well as mentioned when Hiccup speculates they’ll find at Itchy Armpit.

The Typhoomerang, a recurring dragon in the shows, seems very similar to the Timberjack. They also speculated that it was probably a rehash of the same concept, but points out it doesn’t happen to the Snaptrapper.

The Snaptrapper doesn’t appear canon which is “fair” due to its chocolate-vapour breath (ETA: honestly, it would rake in so much money in today’s vape-pen ridden society), though honestly they could have just… changed that?

It’s absence is most likely because the design was lacking, or the budget couldn’t afford four heads, or the creators just didn’t like it.

What I’d said:

The smokey eye is very cool. (And here’s me adding on, presently — One of the heads even has a different eyeshadow-shade. I think it’s actually inspired by Termagent’s dragon from the book, where two heads are male and the other female.)

However, I think the facial design was too similar to a Monstrous Nightmare.

The Typhoomerang looks like a Timberjack at home.

I speculated that there was perhaps meant to be a third of Berk, because on all four of the DVDs of ROB and DOB there are four Dragon Trackers in the bonus features (you can view them on YouTube — but be warned because that is not Hiccup talking and it is unnerving), which always went over the new dragons we met and also had a preview of the next central species with the line of “This dragon is still unknown and needs to be discovered”, or similar. With the Screaming Death (the only show-exclusive dragon in the OB duology to have a before-introduction preview) they’d used a Timberjack, which is the only incidence where that has happened, but at the end of DOB they’d previewed a Snaptrapper.

They could have just had them in the background of Valka’s sanctuary, but nooo.

Spitelout’s Singetail trap in RTTE was actually named the Snaptrapper, most likely as a reference.

Conclusion / the most likely answer:

The “chocolate breath” felt too inaccurate to include, and they didn’t know how to change it.

The facial features looked too similar to a Monstrous Nightmare for the creator’s liking (though, that didn’t exactly stop them with the Gronckle and the Hotburple 😒)

The animation on the four heads was probably too difficult.

Hello, love your creativity! How did you come up with the design of your persona?

It started out as a little self-portrait sketch in my college sketchbook (this is just a photoshop recreation, I'll see if I can find the original later). When I was looking through old sketchbooks after coming to tumblr I started to do doobles of it and it went through some iterations and eventually became my little persona guy!

I used to draw him in lots of different ways with lots of different colors. He also used to always hold his hand over his eye it was a carryover from the original sketch where only one eye was visible but eventually, I developed a chalazion in that eye that made me very self-conscious so I kept drawing him with it covered and eventually started drawing him with one eye closed instead.

Ironically, when I started using him as a persona I didn't have an afto as I shaved it halfway before graduating. I only started regrowing it around 2013. It's funny, reading this back it's almost like I turned into him instead of visa-versa.

He doesn't have a name of anything since he’s just me, I just call him "me", "my little guy", or “expy". I guess logically he would be Qadmonster (or Rupted) since he's the face of this blog. All the pics I have of him live in a folder on my computer called "floof".

Call me a name enough times and I'll probably start responding to it, which is what happened to me with Fleck. I also go by Stardust. Pronouns are yes and whatever is funny, but as a general rule of thumb, please use neopronouns and they/them for me if I don't know you. I also use mirror pronouns.

Not a spoiler free blog. I can and will post full spoilers of the stuff I'm interested in. Most commonly blogging about Rain World (including Downpour) at the moment, with a smattering of Hollow Knight and Bug Fables stuff. You can blacklist the main tags if need be.

I may occasionally talk about politics related to my home city. If I do, it'll be tagged with #hong kong rants for blacklisting purposes.

If you talk about hating any sort of arthropod and wanting to kill them I don't want you here. I don't care if you have a phobia or if you have a legitimate reason to be afraid, I don't want to see bug hate. Yes this includes wasps, yes this includes mosquitoes, yes this includes generally unpopular bugs. I block on sight if you leave comments like that on my blog.

Untamable Anarchy AU sketch gallery.

So... I made an AU? Cool? If you couldn't tell by the title, it's called 'Untamable Anarchy'. It took me a really long time to draw these, mainly because I haven't tried drawing animals until now. But, I hope you enjoy? I'm probably gonna try to write and draw this out on AO3 but I'll see if I can do it here... If I have to motivation to.

So story context:

In this universe of the Old Faith, there are different gods and deities than the ones in the normal game. Along with different OCs of mine. It's a gonna be a bit more angsty (?) than my other stories.

The bishops are nothing but young and lonely nomads that wander through the lands in hopes of finding anywhere where they can stay for long term. The only people they can find solace in is each other.

The time period doesn't matter, so don't look to deeply into it.

Crowns are still a thing in this AU, but the lesser crowns are much less powerful as the godly ones.

So, that's all of the lesser details out of the way. Let's get to the drawings!

"Untamed Leshy"

A more timid and shy iteration of my favorite Wood worm.

He wears a raincoat, and is the youngest of the siblings.

"Untamed Heket"

A less prideful, more caring and compassionate version of Heket. She's more willing to get into a fight if it means they're protected. Not much to say, besides that her age changed to the third oldest of the siblings.

Design inspired by someone else, if you can find who please tell me so I can credit them.

"Untamed Kallamar"

A more observant and less cowardly...? Kallamar. He's the second youngest of the siblings. His observation skills allows him to detect threats from far away.

I didn't realize it when I was drawing it, but the design kind of reminds me of the orphan uniforms from the Promised Neverland.

Kind of fits.

"Untamed Shamura"

Gender is female, if you know me from AO3 you should already know this. She's the oldest of the siblings, so has the most responsibilities out of all of them.

The second hardest I had drawing, I just couldn't figure out how to work around the bandages for awhile. Just used fluff. A bit lazy with just a tunic.

"Untamed Narinder"

A more preserved and quiet Narinder. Though he doesn't admit it, he still cares a lot for his siblings, as he's the second oldest to Shamura.

*sigh* I don't really like how this one came out. But I guess that's just because I'm mentally comparing myself to any other depictions of him. I'm a perfectionist, thus he was the hardest to draw.

Anyways, that's all of the 'bishop' drawings. Sorry if they aren't that good.

My important ocs can be found on this blog, as I don't want to repeat upload them. I'll have questions open to start world building early.

Death’s Story

Hello, everyone! Since it has been some time since an ask has been answered, and I haven’t made any posts regarding the canon surrounding its timeline plus Death himself, I figured I should put out a more in-depth written timeline so people don’t have to comb through the blog to understand all of it (especially since it was more on the random and silly side at the start, though there is no actual ongoing storyline to this blog).

This can also be considered a retcon of sorts for information revolving around Death’s past, whether it be from headcanon-based posts or asks.

As a note, this is all based on my own interpretation of the series and while I’m completely okay with people making fan art based on it, I’d rather not have my ideas used for anyone’s interpretations. Basic things like a character’s personality are fine, as it’s based on what’s seen in the series, but events I’ve made up for Death’s story (and a certain pair of twins down the line) are things I’m very proud to have put together myself, so I’d ask to please use your own imaginations for your own versions of the characters!

That being said, the full summarized story is below the Read More. It’s fairly long, so it’s suggested to be in a good place to read before checking it out (that or it can always be read a little at a time)! I’ve even separated it into sections to make it a little easier to navigate.

Trigger warning: There are vague mentions of suicide and clear mentions of child abuse and neglect in certain areas.

Unfortunately, I could not avoid these as they are essential to the story. If these are triggering for you, I’d advise doing what’s best for your mental health and avoiding this post if need be.

Beginnings

Death is an entity who came into being from the forgotten skull of a deceased person from ancient times. This is in connection to Midnight Horror School, where forgotten objects and the like become sentient and alive – although instead of being brought to life inside the school where the series takes place, his revival, plus many others, was a phenomenon which the school was founded on.

While young, Death was taught by Mr. Salaman in order to hone his skills, or his “wonder” in communing with the dead and guiding them. This was highly necessary for him to learn, as souls from reality were ending up in the alternate dimension where they resided at a more rapid pace, since society was shifting towards a more work-centric lifestyle where stress was more common.

Mr. Salaman was the one who gifted Death’s cap. Sweden’s flag was not quite established at the time, but its previous iteration, which was for naval and war purposes, had been. Why his teacher chose this nation is unknown, but it could be assumed it was because Death’s skull originated from that general area. (Iwata’s reasoning behind Death’s design cannot be applied in canon – The Seventh Seal came out in 1957, and his graduation was far before then).

During graduation, Death’s scythe materialized before him as he realized his true power to sever souls’ ties to reality. Once this was accomplished, he was set out to find where he was to go and what he was to do – which eventually led him to discovering the entrance to the Lost World high in the sky. There were already many souls in need of his ability to pass on in peace, so he started work right away.

Rise of Gregory House

Although busy, Death was pretty content with his job and its natural flow until everything suddenly changed. Not as many souls were appearing, which left gaps in time where he was left wondering why this was happening. Out of curiosity, he left the Lost World to find a hotel had been established far below the gate to his little pocket dimension. One which, curiously, drew in quite a few of the souls he was supposed to save.

He took it upon himself to go over and find out what was going on. Inside, he met Gregory, who gave him the impression he was merely helping the souls relax before passing, while those who had lost their way from reality were to stay until they were ready to go back. At first glance, it really seemed like he was telling the truth… and maybe he was, at the start.

Suspicions only rose higher and higher as the number of souls who arrived to the Lost World dwindled. Given the ample opportunities he had to go visit Gregory House, he made some disturbing discoveries: Monster people were popping up out of nowhere, and very few souls were actually roaming the halls.

Stumbling into Gregory Mama’s room was the final straw for him. So many souls were contained in glass bottles, lining up the shelves. She was in the middle of consuming one of them when he barged in, which elicited a confrontation. Death demanded the souls to be let go, only to be redirected to Gregory who he tried to reason with to stop her… but there was reluctance. Death wanted to settle things peacefully, without having to take drastic action, yet he was given no choice.

Unfortunately, he was no match for Gregory Mama’s powerful magic, and a curse was placed on him to cause him pain every time he tried to enter the hotel. This did not stop him from snooping, however, as his powers developed enough to let him open dimensional windows to peer through. When he finally learned that the monsters living there were originally humans from reality, he attempted to save a young boy from this fate, only to be stopped by Gregory Mama. The hex placed on him was strengthened, and he was rendered unable to enter the building at any capacity, lest he collapse on himself.

Since there was not much he could do, Death ventured to reality to see if there was anything he could do in order to stop this madness. But try as he might to reason with people, to assure them life was worth it, he scared them far too much. So, he returned home, and began calculating potential plans to foil the rat family’s schemes.

The Last Train

When he returned to his own dimension, it would appear that humans were not the only ones struggling. Gregory had gone missing from the looks of things, and in order to find him, he followed a curious James to a train station he did not recall existing in the first place. On the train itself, Gregory had been riding it with no destination in mind, seeking to escape from his own work. In truth, he was stuck on an endless journey, with plenty of lost souls joining for the ride.

Sticking to the shadows, Death watched and waited for the right opportunity to approach. It was clear Gregory was having second thoughts, and the compassion he had for others had not been snuffed out. He could see it through his willingness to aid several, even if his own selfish actions caused the untimely demises of a few – or so the train wanted him to believe. It made Death wonder if it was trying to teach Gregory something, and it might have been.

The train’s blackout was his chance to set things straight, especially since the vehicle was fueled on the power of souls. He made his appearance in the engine room, and attempted to plant the seed required for Gregory to understand that souls were not just a source of energy to be exploited, and had feelings of their own. To keep the Lost World’s location safe, he lied about knowing where it was and how to bring the souls of the train to it, hoping Gregory would find out through sheer determination alone.

But it was not enough. Gregory had failed, given up, and shifted his resolve elsewhere, towards what he had always known. In doing so, the train was brought to Gregory House instead, dooming the souls aboard and becoming a toy replica in the process. All of the visions of guests he had met on his trip would eventually become a part of the hotel’s ever-expanding list of permanent residents, which Gregory adapted to in his own way.

The First Guest

This result and the subsequent losses he had to witness from afar left Death embittered for a time. His voice had become sullen and grave, as opposed to his calmer and friendlier tone, and he forced himself to focus on his work until another arrival to the hotel caught his eye. A businessman endeavoring to escape his life of endless work and familial expectations had become Gregory’s next target. He was far more ordinary compared to the others he had seen wind up in this place, and yet, he somehow had the guts to try and find a way back to reality.

At the end of the man’s journey, Death tested his resolve to return home as Gregory’s ghastly true form tailed him from behind, asking if he truly wanted to return to a boring life full of repetitive daily routines. Much to Death’s surprise, he said yes, and while he was not entirely sure if he was telling the truth, Death did sever his bond with the ghost and let him go, only to be met with disappointment not long after. As he should have expected, Stephen Haniwa returned to the hotel and became a permanent guest.

Gregory Gallery Tour

Amazingly, Haniwa’s relevance did not end there. Not long after shifting form, he was dragged off by Gregory to a new attraction connected to the hotel, the Gregory Gallery. While this did catch Death’s attention, he found it pretty irrelevant up until Gregory had somehow fed a soul to the portrait of Gregory Mama, which had dangerous implications. What made matters worse was that a portrait of himself was on display, with a replica of his scythe seated in front of it.

Rage began to boil as Gregory began to weave lies about who Death was as an entity, painting him to be malevolent one. Furious, his voice boomed throughout the museum, and he reminded Haniwa of what had become of him. Bestowing his power onto the duplicate scythe, Death encouraged the businessman to swing at an encroaching Gregory, who had taken his horrific ethereal form once more.

Although the blade missed its mark and slammed into the floor, the power imbued within it caused the entire gallery to come crumbling down. This set Haniwa’s soul free, allowing him to find a new life at a desert city, while Gregory had to recover from the loss. Death was given some time to breathe before the next exceptional guest was to arrive. In that time, he calmed considerably enough to sound like his usual self again.

The Second Guest

While taking care of his usual rounds, Death was caught off-guard by one particular soul belonging to a lady who was supposed to be alive, separated from her own body. These incidents had been growing in frequency, but what was notable about this particular one was that the body was about to be sacrificed by Mono-Eye Wizard and his followers – all to summon him, much to his chagrin. Although he addressed the problem with humor, deep down he was pretty suspicious about the whole ordeal, and as soon as she went back, he watched and understood why something was off.

For the first time, he witnessed a guest who was so fed up with her misfortunes that she retaliated, and quite violently, at that. This gave Gregory more than enough reason to be rid of her quickly, to be gifted to his mother as always. Despite these attempts, this woman came close to escaping, but was distracted by a raging inferno caused by resident Neko Zombie, who was spurred to act by her own compassion towards him. She was urged to sacrifice herself to the flames, so that the hotel may fall for good, but she was too frozen in fear to act.

It burnt down, yet Gregory and his family persisted in the form of living cadavers. And, much to Death’s dismay, the first person to have ever fought back so persistently had become one of them. The hotel reconstructed itself in an instant, and it was as if nothing ever happened, with the exception of a new permanent guest living within the old building.

Much was learned that day. Everyone living within Gregory House, plus the house itself, were immortal. If Gregory and his mother were ever to be thwarted, someone would have to be willing to do what Gregory’s new sister could not, for the hotel itself was likely tied to the existence of one’s fears and doubts. Given the nature of this dimension, Death had to wonder if making a self-sacrifice would even physically harm the person. Was it perhaps much like how his scythe’s blade separated one’s soul from reality?

An Ally

In the coming years, the questions built as Death kept an eye on the hotel and inspected it from afar. Due to his curse, he was hesitant to come near the place to do any investigating of his own. Day in, day out, all he could do was watch between his rounds. Nothing seemed to change until an oddity occurred unprompted.

Right before his very eyes, the tormented cat who gave Gregory the most trouble appeared out of thin air, floating in the space he called home. It was a perplexing ordeal for the both of them, but after conversing for a time, they discovered Neko Zombie had fallen asleep, a rarity for him, and was somehow projected to the Lost World in his dreams. Why? He was the only resident who remembered his past life, and was the only one who had been an animal, no less. While he had grown more aggressive due to his cruel treatment, his soul remained uncorrupted and pure.

Neither had spoken before, but they could both tell they had the same goal. If Gregory House was to fall, they would have to work together – one being an outsider who could make a path to reality, and the other being an insider with knowledge on the hotel and its guests. Thus, the two discussed a potential plan for the future.

Soul Collector

Death and Neko Zombie’s plan came into effect on a fateful night where a pair of extraordinary humans arrived at Gregory House. They were twins, a boy and a girl, by the names of Hiroshi and Hiroko. Not long after they had been given a room, Neko Zombie yowled for their attention and let them in on the details once they unlocked his cell and entered.

Both were in disbelief of what the mangled cat told them to do: to collect lost souls from the monstrous-looking guests and bring them to Death himself. In truth, they were originally meant to steal from Gregory Mama, but an accident of James’s doing sent many souls out into the halls, which were caught by multiple residents who would be much easier to deal with. Neko Zombie did not tell them anything about the true boss and omitted anything related to her from his explanation, for their sakes.

None of this made sense to the twins, and they thought they were just having a vivid nightmare. Regardless, they followed his instructions to go to bed and it soon became clear that they were not dreaming.

To their horror and amazement, the grim reaper himself did appear to them in their dreams. Sporting a rather goofy voice and personality, so as not to frighten them, Death explained that while the front door used to be kept unlocked, it had been latched in recent days to prevent complications with newer human guests. If they were to escape, they needed the power of the souls they would gather to force it open. Death detested the idea of putting two kids in danger, but they were already doomed the moment they stepped through those double doors.

Over the past several days the two had stayed at the hotel, Death learned about them more and more each time they visited him. Hiroshi was the quieter, more self-conscious of the two, and was more suited to tasks which required sneaking and gathering intel. Hiroko was far more energetic and reckless, which made her the designated risk-taker and runner. Of the two, the latter was the one who was injured the most by the guests, and needed Death to heal her frequently. Luckily, the souls they gave him could do just that.

Although Hiroshi and Hiroko had to trick the guests in order to secure the souls, they were actually good kids and did not deserve to be placed here, much like many others in the past. Whenever they spoke, the two were nothing but respectful and thankful to Death (although Hiroko was much more informal). It was a strange and new feeling for the reaper, to be able to speak with people so frequently and be seen as a friend. Their smiles were something he found himself wanting to protect, even more so when they eventually opened up to him about their past.

The reason they had ended up in this hellish limbo was due to the abuse and neglect of their parents, which they told Death about towards the end of their journey. It broke his heart to learn of this, and brought him great concern regarding their futures. He had to ask himself, “What would become of them, once they return to reality?”

Death constantly worried and fretted over this on the final day. No matter the outcome, he was afraid they would never be happy. Either their souls would be consumed, or they would go back to living a life where they were unwanted. He sincerely wished there was another option, perhaps even to care for them himself, but that was impossible. Being what he was, and living where he was, they would not survive.

Matters only worsened when it became apparent his and Neko Zombie’s plan had been found out. Not long after the souls were set loose to open the front doors, the entrance was immediately locked by none other than Gregory Mama herself, who awaited the kids’ arrival. They were captured and imprisoned downstairs, which spurred Neko Zombie to act and free them. The last thing he could do was give some final words of encouragement before they went out to face the wicked witch.

A boss battle was not what they were expecting to end things off with in the slightest, although Hiroko was pretty jazzed about it. Together, they outsmarted Gregory Mama into busting the doors open and made their escape. Gregory, in a last-ditch effort, shed his usual form and chased after them, attempting to coax them back by reminding them of the lives they ran away from.

They refused to listen, and met Death at the gateway to reality, which he opened for them. Heartfelt goodbyes were shared, and the reaper was pulled into a hug from them both, catching him off-guard. It hurt, knowing he had to let them go. Was this how friends usually felt, when they had to say farewell?

Two last things were bestowed upon him before the twins were to leave. As a parting gift, they gave him two handkerchiefs: one blue and striped, like the shirt Hiroshi wore, and one pink with a flower pattern on it, much like the design on Hiroko’s shirt. They thanked Death for everything he had done, and told him to thank Neko Zombie as well.

And thus, Hiroshi and Hiroko went on home, hoping that, together, they could tackle reality with the confidence they had gained over the course of their stay at Gregory House. Death, too, had held this hope in his very own soul…

Reality

Death really wanted it to end differently, for once. For a human guest or two to return home and never look back. Those kids were tough, he assured himself, and as the days passed, his fear dwindled.

But it was not to be. His hopes were betrayed the moment they stepped through those doors again.

He could not bear it, watching history repeat itself. An overwhelming agony overtook him, as, not long after they entered, their shapes shifted. They became a pair of what were infamously known as Trap Mice to the residents of the hotel, which were robotic mice programmed to attack whatever drew near to them – including their own kind.

In an act of unintentional mercy, it did not come to that. They were immediately shut down and stowed away in the hotel’s basement, where they would gather dust forever. To Gregory and his family, it was a fitting punishment for a “no-good pair of troublemakers,” who had caused them the most grief out of any human guest.

The fate of Hiroshi and Hiroko left a deep scar in Death’s psyche. It happened so quickly, yet it still haunts him to this day. Forcing himself to carry on, he takes care of his work and strives to save as many souls as he can without being hindered, though there are times when he cannot help but sit there, brooding over the closest friends he ever had.

They were gone, just like that. And he feels could have done something to stop it.

little camp stove

I'm taking a welding class, and we have some time in the class to work on whatever we want. i ended up spending a few weeks worth of classes making this little wood stove intended to be used for camping.

i was inspired to make this after finding that material with all of the little holes in it. the principle is straightforward, it just sucks in air from the bottom and makes the fire happen because heat goes up. the thing itself came out really nicely. I think it looks cool, and putting it together was fun

here's a video of the first burning, with my cute little mini firewood that i had to chop up to fit inside

of course, being that this was my first attempt at designing the stove, the issues came up when testing it. the principle of burning the wood worked exactly as intended, and the fire was great. i didn't take the smoke into account, though. it turns out there's a reason that wood stoves have an exhaust pipe and don't just billow the smoke directly onto your food.

here you can see that our test hot dogs are receiving a nice coating of carcinogens from the fire. i took a bite out of one of these hot dogs and the nasty chemically taste of the smoke and whatever other bullshit was coming out coated the inside of my mouth for like 2 hours

using a pan wasn't enough to save it, either. it turns out that obstructing the airflow with the pan conveniently creates a low pressure zone that sucks all of the smoke directly to where your food is

this thing is definitely doing a great job of burning the wood at least. unfortunately, though, the smoke issue makes this thing pretty much unusable. it's not useful as a cooker because of the smoke coating your food, and it's not useful as a heater because to be in a space small enough for it to heat would mean you're going to die of smoke inhalation before you get even warm. it's still cool, though, and i'm happy to keep it as an artifact.

this is just a first iteration, and I'm definitely going to try and make an improved stove to address the issues i found when testing this one.

I'm tempted to try and make some modifications to this stove to make it work better, but I think the internal volume of the thing is just too small for it to really produce a substantial amount of heat. If I were going to modify it, though, here are a few things I'd do:

weld a flat plate on top to create a cooking surface that doesnt coat your food in nasty bullshit

cut out an exhaust hole in the back and add in a pipe to get the smoke away from the food

have the door hinge horizontally rather than vertically. when you open the door on this thing the fire erupts out directly onto your arm lol

have an actual door latch instead of using a magnet. magnets stop working when they're really hot and the magnet isn't strong enough to hold the door shut when there's shit inside of it

i'm sure any astute stovist could take a look at my stove and immediately pick out every reason that it wasn't going to work, but what I really wanted to do was just wing it for a project and see what happens. in the end, i think this was a much more useful approach for me to take than it would have been to study stove designs and agonize over how i'm going to put it together. i ended up with a tiny shit stove that's useless, but the experience of conceiving, assembling, and testing it was much more enjoyable to me and a great way to learn. striving for perfection on the first attempt would have ended in me taking way fucking longer to make this, and it still would have just been a first attempt no matter what. it was very helpful for me to just put aside the uncertainty and let whatever happens happen.
