Do you know a Coriolanus Snow?
So, let me preface this by saying I have not read any of the Hunger Games books (it's just not my preferred genre). Instead, recently I went to see the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie with my roomie, who loves the books and recently read the prequel and described the whole plot to me before we went. Watching the film and listening to her description of the books I was struck by something: Suzanne Collins has done a wonderful job portraying everyday evil's perfectly pleasant face. Coriolanus has friends. He's smart, driven, charming, but also stilted and awkward. He loves his family. He feels shame about the poverty he and his family has fallen into. He is also, an utter douchebag who knows how to play both sides and seem like a good person. Sejanus believes Coriolanus is on his side the entire time. He gets frustrated with him, but still believes Coriolanus can be reached. Lucy Grey believes in Coriolanus because she sees him make efforts to help her (I understand in the book she's portrayed as more canny than the movies and less overall trusting of Coriolanus. In the films she comes off as hesitant but overall, like Sejanus, convinced that Coriolanus will be swayed.). Coriolanus is careful to always hide his intentions or frame them in a "helping you helps me" way. But, his bottom line actions are always about saving his own skin. The film is brutal. It serves as a brilliant metaphor for a lot of the racist, classist violence within the United States and the ways in which imperialism comes home to roost by feeding on vulnerable communities. Coriolanus serves as a perfect metaphor for the countless every day people who, believing that they are temporarily disadvantaged and superior, not only reject invitations to resist, they sabotage them. Coriolanus moves through the world with a deep sense of entitlement that keeps him from empathizing with others who share the same plights as him. The people from the districts are meant to live in the country backwoods, eating katniss and dancing to bluegrass. He is meant to rise in the ranks and return to the capitol. Because he is educated and they are not. Because he is from an Old Family and they are not. A life with the covey on the edge of district twelve, surrounded by beautiful greenery with the chance to catch and forage for your own food would mean not wanting for anything, but it would not have status. No one would be kissing his ass and singing his praises. Coriolanus before all the gunfights, could have found a way to move Tigris and Gram out to the district and build a life there. But it never even occurred to him. Living a quiet life with Lucy Grey would never satisfy Coriolanus because he doesn't just want to never be hungry again. He wants to have power over others. Which is why he betrays Sejanus when he could have kept his mouth shut. He did it to save his own skin. He did it to regain access to the capitol by getting Dr. Gaul's attention. Every turn Coriolanus takes is for the worst. Until he is staggering through the woods with an automatic rifle, looking all the world like a wet skin head as he bellows Lucy Grey's name into the dim. I can see why some fans were angry with this book. I think there is a desire to believe that every asshole has a reason for winding up cruel. That something drove them over the edge. But Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes breaks that concept apart, brick by brick. Coriolanus is not special, in his hunger, in his desperation, in his poverty, in his loss. He's not special in being exposed to the capitol's brutal propaganda. Everywhere around him in the story, are people resisting their fates without stepping on someone else's neck. But Coriolanus, with all his good looks and fumbling charm, will ultimately step on a throat if it helps him up. I've met a lot of Coriolanuses. Lovely snakes. How many times have you met Coriolanus? When did he take the chance to bite you instead of smile?

Good Omens but make it more like James Bond (WIP Wednesday)
It’s been a while since I've posted for WIP Wednesday, so... Do you remember, for my next Good Omens fic, this James Bond/Q AU I was mentioning last week? Here’s a little extract from the first chapter, because it seems I can’t stop myself from writing it now:
[...] “Take the door on your left, Crowley! On your left!”
If he hadn’t been running like a madman after his target, Crowley would have let out a long, dramatic sigh. “I heard you the first time, Fell,” he replied to his quartermaster, miles away from him, as he pushed the door open with his shoulder.
“Well, sometimes you hear me, but you don’t listen to me. And that’s usually why you end up in the hospital. Take the stairs, up to the roof.”
“Why I… I’m sorry?” Crowley managed to huff while climbing up the stairs, two at a time. “Last time I ended up in the hospital, it was your fault!”
There was a long silence in Crowley’s ears, enough time for him to arrive at the top of the building. The sight of Paris at dusk, glowing and bathed in a pink light, was breathtaking - but, this time, he couldn’t afford the luxury to fully appreciate it. His target was still ahead of him, although much closer than before. Fell’s shortcut had worked - as it always did.
“An honest mistake,” eventually came the quartermaster’s reply, and Crowley almost missed his landing as he jumped from one roof to another. He swore under his breath.
“An honest mistake? Confusing miles and kilometers? Because of you, Fell, I-”
“Gentlemen!” Gabriel's voice boomed in Crowley’s ears. “Could we please leave the banter aside for one minute and focus on the mission at hand? Thank you.”
Crowley clenched his teeth as he kept hoping and running, closing the distance between him and the target. Anger tended to energize him, and Fell knew it - the bastard. Everything to get the job done. [...]
I hope it sparks your interest! I was crushed to see that the title “From Hell with Love” was (of course) already taken... I guess I’ll have to come up with something else!

So. I just finished the EXU: Calamity finale.
God. Fuck. And that's it, isn't it? That's really it. We don't know if people remember what happened that day. If their story gets known. We don't know who's around to tell it. But it did happen, and it did matter. It mattered so much. The ring of brass may have played a part in releasing the Calamity upon Exandria, but they are also the reason that there is now an Exandria left to be recovering from the calamity, over 900 years later.
And there's one person left who truly knows what the ring of brass accomplished. Because he was a part of it.
Fly high, Cerrit. I am so glad that you got to keep your promise.

dsmp Technoblade who always wears a mask because he doesn't want to meet his soulmate(he knows what they would think, being soulmates with a weapon) Wilbur and Tommy knowing in the dsmp era that they were p soulmates, but techno not knowing. And then wilbur dies and all he has to go off of is the missing part of his soul he can feel like a gaping wound. Osmp soulmates when Wilbur comes back as a phantom, and its like their soulmate is back but hes *different*. He's still wil but hes not at the same time. And techno feeling out of place because phil, wil, and tommy are *family*, and he's just some guy whos stumbled in and is supposed to be their soulmate. SMP Earth Techno and Phil who are known as this super strong duo, and that's strengthened by their connection. But then they get in a fight with this scrappy blond kid from across the way and find out that theres more. Seeing Wilbur at the trial and finding out the man trying to sentence them to death is also the missing part that they didn't know they had anyways! I love platonic soulmates this au makes my thoughts go feral
FUCK there’s so many things i haven’t even thought of in the various settings of this AU because I’ve been very focused on the modern part, but this is GOOD SHIT RIGHT HERE AAAA
The SMP Earth one hurts me :’)
