Someone got me thinking more about Kipps and what he represents this evening and I was thinking about the parallels I felt with no longer being a student.

I graduated before most of my uni friends for various reasons, and when I went back to visit them I was always overwhelmed by the feeling that I wasn’t part of that student world anymore. Partly in a good way - I felt like I’d matured a lot more than some of them - but I always felt a little bit lost when they were all up to general student stuff and suddenly I didn’t live in that city anymore so was at loose ends if everyone was busy and I didn’t have a home round the corner to go back to.

And I think that’s comparable to losing your talent, and suddenly realising you’ve been forcibly kicked out of this world that you used to love and that a load of your mates are still part of, but that doesn’t fit you in anymore. But you’re not a real adult either, so what are you?

Also, when you’re a student and you meet new people, just going “I’m a student” gives the general sense of what kind of stuff you’re up to, even if you’re post-grad, doctorate etc. But suddenly being a grad and then not even a fresh grad anymore, and maybe not being settled in a career path makes it so much more complicated to explain. You’re a real working adult, not a student, but you don’t fit like you fit in either worlds.

It’s really clever of Stroud to make that connection (on purpose or not) and provide a counterpart in a world where kids are employed instead of in school.

Just thinking about how my entire primary school was convinced that a house across the street was haunted.

This was a legend for all my primary years - older siblings would tell younger (who would then inform their own friends with newfound Knowledge Of The Elders), new kids would be looped in ASAP, and so many poor teachers on yard duty suffered kids telling them about it (we ignored their “reasonable” explanations, naturally).

I distinctly remember stakeouts happening along the fence line at recess and someone would convince the whole group they saw a curtain move. Because of course the place is full of ghosts if the curtain moves!

Also, this house was two doors down from the best milk bar in town, but if you wanted to get your sausage roll/40c lollybag/sunnyboy fix you stayed on the school side of the street until the very last moment. Because scary house.

Ok so in the GQ Video with Stranger Things Costume designer (links to the video elude my skills) during the segment about Eddie they show some pics of the multiples of his vest that was needed and each pic a has been labeled….

*whispering to avoid being overheard* most have standard “hero/stunt” labels as in movie making there are always multiples of cast costumes made. BUT One is labeled “Eddie PD” 👀👀👀

Could…could…..could it mean what I think (hope) it means?? 👀👀

How can I tell I’m too damn old for this shit? I’m finally finishing The Secret History and my favorite character is Judy Poovey. Both because of her name and because, despite her rampant drug issues, she’s the only one who seems like she might actually mature eventually. The sketch for the first one is not included because I did that before I started planning anything.

As you can see they changed quite a bit as I worked on them! The high priestess was originally the two of swords and judgement had a bunch of people that I ended up abandoning.
