i want to make a davejade analysis masterpost but the funniest thing with these asks is that theyre the ones that really prompt me to put my thoughts together in some direction and i ALWAYS find a new implication or connection to talk about. like while i’m writing the connections will just make themselves known. if i made a masterpost i’d have to update it every time i think of something new which defeats the purpose of a masterpost because it’d never be finished. so i just like to spitball into separate posts and just shove them in my davejade tag. i was NOT expecting to get back into homestuck with davejade at the forefront but i can see things now i didnt then

im gonna go off again because it’s so obvious to me on this jumpy scrambled “reread” that dave has a fat fucking heart-on / affection erection for jade. hes tryin soo hard to be cool but hes like this with jade actually behind the screen and she knows it

words and deeds of a court jester dude who totally has a crush on his childhood internet friend and doesnt acknowledge it (btw this is woefully incomplete for the sake of brevity but i could elaborate in another post. i actually have a draft (edit: posted) with a shit ton of more analysis stuff in it on why he acts differently with her than other characters):

the next day (chronologically) when jade messages him:

hussie commentary: “Dave's one-pixel-smile there means that there are literally more than ten thousand drawings on the internet of Dave and Jade kissing. That pixel literally made that happen.”

i mean … it sure is easy to assume how he feels about jade based on the way he talks to her and when his sprite only ever smiles one other time in the entire fucking comic and the reality of that other one was arguable since it was during [S] Karkat: Mental breakdown and its likely karkat was hallucinating it based on the content and context of the flash

nah this one was real. and it was from the first conversation we saw between dave and jade in the comic and thus set the standard for their dynamic. and remember old school 2009 dave was kind of a menace so it says a lot

this girl was special enough to him to warrant that pixel

jade calling dave a “huge baby” for him getting nervous about a piss while she’s his server player. he makes such a big deal about it while shes like oh my god just go:

and the absurdity of the situation being one of his favorite memories

i know pesterquest isn’t “canon” canon but it passes my character essence check and still contributes something of substance to my argument. like i can say this is not at all out of place if these characters were plopped into these scenarios. remember this takes place on the same day as the above, 4/13/2009. theyre the same age as above and have the same relationship as they did above, just in a different scenario that wasn’t possible in canon wherein they didn’t play sburb

Jade wanders away from that window and toward another one, whose view is exclusively centered on the rolling blue. She presses a hand against the misty pane and sighs. JADE: you know, dave talks a lot about coming to visit me here. i mean, all of my friends do but dave especially JADE: in his usual davey way of course, which means making lots of jokes and not sounding very serious about it JADE: "yeah im itching to put on my safari hat and come traipsing down to doomdeath archipelago to get my ass murdered by infinidog the eldritch retriever," stuff like that JADE: i know he really means it though! he wants to see me, just like i want to see him JADE: but its just wishful thinking

anyway daves reaction to seeing his isolated online friend for the first time irl cry because she has guests. its even better with the character sprites

JADE: we can play with all my toys and jam out to some music and stay up all night chatting with each other and oh my god oh my god youre here youre all here this is really happening!!!!! Jade's next laugh verges on hysterical and she's got tears streaked down her cheeks. Dave looks a little perturbed. DAVE: wow holy shit uh DAVE: its cool jade no need to get so DAVE: like this DAVE: kind of fucks me up seeing you cry DAVE: not that im trying to make this all about me DAVE: i mean uh

and so after mspa reader’s intervention, who do we see with jade the next time we see her?

dave. and hes goofing with her squiddles while grinning

DAVE: okay so lets see what we got here Jade's room is bright and cheery, fresh flowers in the hanging pots, curtains pulled open wide to let in the afternoon sunlight. Jade sits on her bed while Dave paces in front of a line of squiddle toys, carefully assembled in neat ranks. DAVE: this blue one is clearly in charge look at his dominant posture DAVE: also hes the only motherfucker not tentacle deep in his homie DAVE: hes an untangled buddy that is some shit really cuts to the core of like DAVE: DAVE: emotions JADE: its actually because the magnets in him are messed up, and always have been!! DAVE: harley you are ruining the magic come on

basically what im putting together is that dave was REALLY fixin to spend some time with jade. extending into her sphere of interests that he doesnt express much with anyone else; you can tell he really wanted to engage with her in a less irony poisoned way. he’s softer with her than his other friends and god forbid the trolls, he is much less skeptical about things when talking to her (he even questions why he just seems to go along with her eccentric precognitive statements but he doesnt change his attitude about it), he showers her with his music and raps to the point where jade is expectant of getting poetry from him. rap IS poetry. please realize that dave is sending her his poetry, regardless of how goofy it may be. this is the level on which im viewing this at and once you realize this theres no going back. there comes a time in every homestuck’s life where they have to see how dave interacted jade and conclude that he had a cute little puppy crush on her unbeknownst to either of them. and it was adorable. and now, in the year 2023, it’s your time to realize this too. no going back.

and btw it all came back around…………………nimblest son of a bitch who had the gumption to glue a nasty pair of latex cat lips to his face

for a reason that wasnt a joke anymore

don’t think ive seen anyone talk about this parallel at the end to one of their first conversations in the comic. maybe somebody did back in the day but i never saw it

this is a meteor fic, and youve read any davekat fics, thats a summary in of itself. however, from what i remember, this particular meteor fic goes really hard bc it does such a good job of building dave and karkats relationships with the other meteor residents and it leans hard into dave and roses friendship which is so important to me, bc guys they are BEST friends and theyre just so ; ; its just important ok. also according to the note i left for myself on this fic it made me cry a lot so thats always good

frankly everything curlicuecal writes goes hard as fuck, so write that one down. read everything. they never miss. they are SO good at handling side characters and dealing w the complexities of homestuck characters, never shying away from the things that make them miserable little assholes. their fics are always so fun + funny and this is a really good one

its short and sweet, really cute fluffpiece. i CANNOT remember this users tumblr un anymore but they were huge in the davekat fandom for a while and they have a really good grasp on dave and karkat as characters which makes all of their davekat fics hit hard. highly recommend checking out their whole page rlly

They’re far too fond to give any sort of impression other than absolutely smitten, regardless of how hard he’s trying to seem annoyed, and the way he blinks at you - quickly like he’s trying to clear his vision, like he’s trying to figure out if you’re real or if he’s imagining you - is enough to make your heart swoop in your chest.

ive read this one so many times and honestly its still really good. the writing style is fantastic and i have spent many a year trying to capture the same beautiful atmosphere arc does. its a really creative au with really cool ideas about classpects and the characterization in this fic is awesome

ive already listed my favorite davekat fic, but THIS is my favorite homestuck fic period of all time ever the end. this is the best one. this is the ONLY one, as far as im concerned. you dont want to know how many times ive reread this fic ok. i love davesprite/karkat way more than i love dave/karkat (bc you know me w my doomed characters) and the way this author handles the interpersonal relationships between not just karkat and ds but also like ds and all of the OTHER characters is SO. GOOD. davesprite and kanayas relationship in particular lives in my brain rent free at all fucking times oh my god they are so perfect. shes so perfect. i love kanaya so much in this. oh my god and JOHN. the senor strider thing is so fucking funny sldkjfnsdf just. AUGH. its such a good fic just trust me ok just trust me

there are probably more i could recommend but its been so long since i read them im just going to stick to these bc like. man. i do NOT remember some of the bookmarks ive got in there anymore. ask me again when i finally snap and reread homestuck

Harry Potter - creative enjoyer - My very first. This shit was a family affair in my house. I went to watch parties, themed parties. I cosplayed shittily, wrote shitty fanfic, and my walls were plastered floor to ceiling in teen magazine posters. Went to the Exhibition. Every second movie would come out in July so I would pretend it was like a birthday gift to me.

Twilight - creative enjoyer - Jfc. Don’t get me started. I still have my Edward action figure whose now missing both hands. Used to write self insert fanfic on quizzilla.com. RIP you beast of a website

The Walking Dead - passive enjoyer - This was also a family affair. Every sunday we would all gather round our shitty TV for the newest episode. I was more of a liveblogger than anything else. My dad has a bit to this day that ‘Hershel isn’t dead. He’ll be back.’ Yeah, sure dad.

Legend of Zelda - creative enjoyer - For most of my childhood I was passive, only really doodling Twilight Princess stuff sometimes. Then BOTW came out and it all changed.

Lord of the Rings - passive enjoyer - I look at Legolas and Aragorn. That’s enough for me. I don’t need creative works because I just need to look at them.

Marvel (Spider-man and Loki mostly) - creative enjoyer - I’ve been drawing these guys since birth, for better or for worse. MCU can suck my nuts but so can Loki franchise /sex DC (Batman) - creative enjoyer - Batman the Animated series did something bad to me. Now I draw Joker sometimes. Watch out, stay safe out there

Sherlock and Doctor Who - passive enjoyer - I’m putting these two together since I never really made fan art or anything, but I did attend watch parties for both on several occasions.

Supernatural - creative enjoyer - Sighs. Sighs even harder. Somewhere out there, deep in the depths of fanfic.net there’s miles of really really really bad fanfic. Somewhere…. Final Fantasy VII - creative enjoyer - Sighs far more dreamily. My favvvvv my ultimate fav. Sephiroth is my fictional other and LOMF. Many, many arts of him throughout every sketchbook I own. Also some fanfics IIRC.

TF2 - creative enjoyer - I used to draw Medic and Pyro kissing<3

Homestuck - creative enjoyer - War flashbacks. Not only was I a semi-well known fanartist, I was also a semi-well known cosplayer in my city. I was a ‘friendleader’ in my cities Homestuck fangroup and attended events, dances, etc etc etc. I was on a cosplay gif blog here on Tumblr. I ran the second most popular groupchat on MSPARP.com before it was MXRP.com. I had beef with mods. Most of my relationships at that time were forged in the fires of LOHAC. I still see my art of Dave in MCR black parade uniform around sometimes. Dramatical Murder - creative enjoyer - To no ones surprise. Yeah. I like the yaoi dissociation game. Dream Daddy - creative enjoyer - SHOUTOUT DREAM DADDY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Evil priest Joseph lovers rise UP. Didn’t do much, but there’s some art floating around out there.

Voltron: LD - passive enjoyer - Thank GOD I never made anything for this. However, I was active in the kin community so thats a huge L. I also ate uppppp stuff about it and sheith still fucks.

Overwatch - creative enjoyer - Sometimes you’re a Genji main and the world is so so hard for you. That’s how I used to live my life, then I got better.

Final Fantasy XV - creative enjoyer - Second LOMF. My old art blog is stocked full of chocobro content, mostly fanart of the boys and meme redraws. Also used to cosplay Noctis CONSTANTLY! Here’s an old tiktok

I never considered that Aradia could be feeling sincere gratitude towards Equius - that's a good point, and might partially explain her flushed feelings for him. Similarly, I never thought about how difficult and impractical a relationship would be for Equius, given he has this kind of strength paired with this kind of dexterity.

Anyway, I half-agree with your thesis. I can imagine a hypothetical kismesissitude between an older, more mature Equius and Aradia, and I think that relationship could potentially be healthy, for the reasons you describe.

But the one we're getting is doomed from the start - Equius's mind-control shenanigans have pretty much torpedoed the whole thing. I don't think he can have a healthy relationship until he figures out why that was wrong.

I'll give you a freebie right now - most of the Jojo villains would fit right in with the Felt!

Yeah, it's not like romantic rivalry is a new idea. Really, the more I think about it, the more I think Hussie's riffing on real relationship tropes with all the quadrants.

Hell, I could probably list some fictional characters that work pretty well as Moirails - and I'm not just talking about The Locked Tomb!

We have two opposing views here, and they both make good arguments. Aristocrats do tend to be egotistical by nature - but Alternia would expect him to act that way, even if it wasn't his natural tendency.

I personally don't think Eridan ever intended to exterminate the land-dwellers, but I'm not sure he ever realized that himself.

Don't forget Insane Clown Hussie, which is when your webcomic author keeps putting more harlequins in their story.

Odd. It really looks like John's birthday should be December 2nd. Maybe something went wrong with his meteor.

The Newtonverse is a corruption of Homestuck, but Homestuck is already a parody of a million other things. It's one layer too deep, and feels 'wrong' as a result.

Unless Cool and New Webcomic is a similar style of parody, in which case, who knows? Maybe the Newtonverse is simply real, and trying to break into our reality.

Yeah, that makes sense. She certainly looks like a classic eldritch monster.

It's always very tempting to check out other livebloggers so I can compare and contrast. I won't, though - quite aside from any worries about spoilers, I just don't want to influence my own opinions!

This has always been a blind spot with me, and it always will be. Try as I might, I will never recognize the difference between Rouge and Rouge.

I knew the comic had about 8000 pages, but it's good to know it clocks in at 8128.

It annoys me more than it should that it's not 2^13, or 8192. It would have been a nice round number to finish on!

Eridan's beliefs don't really make sense - but it makes sense that they don't. It's bigotry, after all.

He knows trolls like Kanaya, and can clearly see that there's nothing inferior about her - but he can't let go of what he's been taught, so he just doesn't address it, and continues on as normal.

This comic is damn long, so it's a fun reference to make.

I'd probably pick one. No special reason - I just sort of vibe with the number, and it's the closest to something kooky like zero, or a negative number.

I would have picked the cueball, but I don't think I want Scratch as a rival...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAA why am i stuck in a homestuck kinshift in 2023. it came out of fucking nowhere. one day i'm minding my own business (in different, more recently discovered kinshifts) and then BOOM. karkat feelings at the forefront of my brain and they want me to reread homestuck NOW!! like. yeah i've known im karkat for like 6 years, but that shits been on the backburner!! put it back there!!!

worst part is the fucking minefield that is navigating the tags 😒 i want to see art of me and my husband dave but i dont want to see the shit from hs^2!! that shit didnt fucking happen!! i'm pretty sure dave and i got together either on the meteor or shortly after winning the game !! we lived together on earth c and had a nice normal life and hung out with our friends!!!!!!

🦋 "Would You Be So Kind?" by dodie BUT SPECIFICALLY THIS VERSION, because i love everyone's crowded but earnest vibes. this one is led by Suggestion ("oooh you wanna fall in love with us so bad right? right???") and makes me grin, you GOTTA imagine all of the skills squished together in the front of Harry's brain all trying different tactics to get Kim to fall in love with them, (rhetoric: "I HAVE A QUESTION..." ency: "let's write a story! be in my book!") at 2:35, after all the skills singing together loudly, it's just Harry himself singing to Kim, with all the skills slowly backing him up. the ending is all of them fucking ECSTATIC celebrating when harry finally kisses kim hkjhg jesus this'd be so cute hold on i have to go plan this out i have so many thoughts hkjdh

"Seven" by Sleeping at Last would be a sweet Reaction Speed song (ironic that im adding react speed to a list of soft, slow songs though hkjgh) "I'm ready for whatever comes next!" <3 Reaction Speed is a fast, restless little fella who can't sit still for long, always loves moving, acting, doing. he's like the personification of a verb hkjhg <3 i would also accept an interpretation for echem <3

"Cosmos" by Jawbreaker Reunion is a song that The Furies recently suggested to me as a jean song and it's so right for that, very soft and i like it very much :'] (you should also ask The Furies if you want to, it's much more musically inclined than me, i feel hkjhg <3)

Seeing the other anon mention a “semi fair” Twitter thread that pointed out the problem of “harassment fic”. I came upon that too.

I didn’t initially understand what they meant about harassment fic, but thought if there was awful fic written about and targeting other random members, yeah, that would be bad (but also probably already against the TOS?). Anyway several people in the thread mentioned “torture fic” about “Amber” as an example where ao3 didn’t do anything. Now, was Amber some friend of theirs? No. They were talking about an actress that has recently been in a very public trial. I admit the idea of dozens of stories with explicit torture about this woman, written apparently out of hateful resentment, really made me a little sick, and so I searched ao3 to see how horrible it was.

What I found under the character tag were 14 stories, but they were pretty much the normal stuff you would expect for a not super famous actress. There was one that explicitly said “Amber bashing” in the summary and the tags made clear this was the kind of fantasy full of degradation kink, so I assumed this must be the famous “torture fic” since everything else clearly wasn’t. But it really was just the kind of unimaginative “put her in her place” story that ends with a spanking, the woman begging to be fucked and anal sex.

Now, is this fic in bad taste and misogynistic? Sure. (It’s also an incredibly common kink)

Should it be banned? Under what rule? That it’s harassment of the actress? I doubt they even knew about it, and let’s be honest, a lot of RPF could fall into that category.

But the most interesting part to me is that it wasn’t published recently (as in after the trial), but in January of 2021. Of the 18 comments only one was from the time it was posted. All others dated from the past three weeks when apparently someone on Twitter dug up this story and dragged it into the public eye to the degree that the Daily Dot wrote about it (including the author’s ao3 handle). And of course most of these comments were telling the author how they were a disgusting piece of shit and that they should kill themselves.

So this “anti harassment” crowd, dug up a fic about an actress from 2021 to prove a point, told enough people about it that it got a sudden influx of traffic and proceeded to harass the author. Idk, but color me suspicious that protecting people from harassment is what the goal is here.

Yeah. This is typically what you find when there's a thread about Very Bad Fic on AO3.

This is why I'm so cynical when people bring up hypothetical horrors without many specifics. I get that they may be trying to avoid the exact situation above where lots of randos are driven to some fic to gawk and bother the author, but when there are almost no specifics at all, it usually means someone read an alarmist thread and assumed its evidence was real.

The majority of anti-AO3 discourse is predicated on misrepresenting what fic is actually on AO3.

I think that's partly why that one ship rubs me the wrong way, despite there being perfectly fine examples and shippers of it, because from my experience with certain places these types of pairings tend to feel like they take her and make her into something you see out of a low tier harem show just because they want to get with "the anime catgirl", while complaining about anything that's gay

You have been having a wonderful time reconnecting with your brothers nearly every week since the incident. Yuri would mostly keep to himself during these visits, something you knew was for the better with how pushy Kris was. It’s not the best idea to have the two hotheads begin to argue again. But…

With your new recognition came new responsibilities, and new meetings you had to attend with other publishers. You apologized to Yuri as you got ready, begging him to please take in and take care of the boys when they got to your apartment.

‘I’ll come straight home after the meeting! It won’t… be long I hope, damnit!’ You stubbed your foot while moving to get something. Yuri catches you as you stumbled from the pain, letting you reorient yourself with his hand still on your shoulder as he groans.

‘Uuugh. Okay. I’ll let them in and tell them to go to their room.’

You put your foot back down gently, still wincing, but grateful it wasn’t that bad.

‘Thanks, Yuri.’ Without thinking, you grabbed his hand on your shoulder and looked at him, giving it a pat.

‘I can count on you.’

Yuri gave your shoulder a squeeze and bonked your head with his slightly. ‘Yeah yeah! Don’t make me give you another headbutt and leave already!’

You laughed and clutched your forehead at the threat. ‘Never again!’ You moved away and got your bag. ‘Alright. Goodbye!’

‘… bye.’

It was half an hour before the kids were dropped off. Your mom was very eager, seeing Yuri be the one opening the door, to begin talking his ear off and ask questions about you. He closed the door as soon as your brothers came inside.

‘Alright, twerps.’ Both boys looked up at him. Yuri gave off the aura of a general ordering his cadets.

‘Y/N is out of the house right now for something work-related. You’re not allowed to make a mess, put up a fuss, or ask me questions. Just… go to your room and do whatever until she’s back.’

He waved them off, dismissing them, but predictably, Kris wasn’t having none of it.

‘When is Y/N coming back?’

‘…. I don’t know.’

‘What’s her work?’

‘…. I can’t tell you.’

‘Sounds like you don’t know that either.’

‘I know her work! It’s just secret.’

‘Yeah sure.’ Kris shook his head, imitating his dad when he didn’t like someone. ‘I bet you don’t know anything about her. Like her favorite color, or her favorite ice cream flavor-‘

Yuri answered both questions immediately. He smirked at Kris’s face. Kris began listing other stuff, all of which, Yuri was getting right. He had never asked you for any of your preferences… but he already knew. His observation skills and previous background check on you was thorough.

Kris stomped his feet, stopping himself from going any further. ‘Alright! Sure! You may know stuff about Y/N but that doesn't excuse how FAKE you feel!’

Yuri felt his interrogator senses trigger. Kris wasn’t just trying to annoy him, Yuri was being interrogated. He was trying to find a fault in him.

‘What do you mean fake? I haven’t lied to you!’ That he knew of.

Kris was adamant in his response. ‘It’s this whole marriage! It doesn’t feel real! You two don’t ACT like you’re married’

Yuri’s eyebrows raised, his annoyance hit a peak. ‘And how exactly are we supposed to act? Are you an expert now shrimp? How many girls have you married?’

Kris got flustered and looked away from Yuri, clasping his arms to his chest. ‘W-Well, I haven’t met the right girl yet! But I know from TV how you’re supposed to be!’

Part 1: HERE

Yuri dragged his feet as he left his work. This would be the first official meeting between you and him. He had a small pile of candidates he hoped would be enough. He made it to your door, longingly looking at Yor’s beside it, and knocked. He wanted to get this over quick.

… Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t that easy. The first batch, though some looked promising, with further research from an informant, they ended up being crossed out. Every movement of his felt like a chore.

Still, duty called and he’d make it to your apartment without fail. You would open the door and greet him. Sometimes you’d have food prepared. He hesitated to try anything at first, but you got him one day by telling him that Yor had helped.

He hasn’t exactly refused since then… It was, of course, because he considered your feeding him as another part of the deal. And totally not because he liked the things you made. He was already wasting time and money coming all the way over, why not get a meal for his effort?

You wholeheartedly agreed. You always let him know how grateful you were for his help. You know how busy his work makes him, and you know how bad his temperament can get. You don’t want to be on his bad side. You’re always on alert when he visits for ways keep him feeling content. He hasn’t realized it, but it’s worked.

His footsteps don’t drag as much anymore. He stopped complaining about the food needing more of something. You’ve learned and adapted. And as you two got more comfortable around each other…

You’d sometimes talk about things other than the assignment you were on. He knew about your life but… he still found himself asking questions sometimes.

‘How did you learn to make so much?’

You looked back at him eating fried dough with two cheeses and a fried piece of seasoned ham in the middle. You smiled.

‘Mostly from watching my mom. But there was a time when I was pulled in to help a restaurant next door to where I was living.

This… was not on his files. He begins to wonder what other secrets you are unknowingly keeping from him. He finishes his meal and reminds himself that he shouldn’t care.

You’ve already been caught by Anya on who your identity is as a cartoonist, though neither you or her have talked about it. Anya knows not to mention that she knows. The second person who knows about your profession, is Yuri. He looked into a bit of your comics just to make sure they were not something that was not in line with the country’s sensibilities. …

All he saw was a regular children’s cartoon with a unique art style. So he stopped looking into them until he caught you on a day where you had a deadline and no idea.

You had been on a roll with the Forger family. They gave you material for little odd things that could happen in a household that were humorous. But you haven’t been visiting as often because of your recent meet ups with Yuri, and now you were panicking.

Yuri walked inside the mess your living room had become, with papers strewn about everywhere and mugs of different teas and coffees all over. You looked worse than usual.

You apologized and told him it would probably be better if he left you alone that day. You couldn’t really concentrate on anything else. You laughed as you confessed you hadn’t even gotten to cook anything for yourself yet.

Yuri’s eyes narrow as he really takes you in. Your hair is all over the place. Your clothing has stains. You look like you’re about to pass out at any moment.

‘You need to eat.’

‘Yeah… I should probably go buy something later-‘

‘NOW.’

He picks up his coat and is back outside. He comes back twenty minutes later with food from a restaurant for the both of you. Despite your concerns over taking up too much of his time, he stays and eats with you. And he asks you what your latest ideas for strips are.

Yuri had it in his head that he could help you decide on one of your already-made strips and that would be that. He’d make it that simple for you; it was just a children’s cartoon strip. There was no need to overthink it if you didn’t land a joke that Sunday!

…. He didn’t account for your lore dumps of all the characters. Or to be shown twenty different strips, all differing in content. The hours pass by. You’re both deeply discussing the motivations of a four-year-old child and her imaginary friend’s psychology. You get into an argument over whether the father character is a good man or not. It’s an emotional roller coaster. He chokes up as he watches you put the last, best idea onto paper finally.

It’s been a long day and you both cheer like goofballs at your finished 4-panel masterpiece. A job well done. Yuri leaves you apartment feeling a bit accomplished, even smiling. He doesn’t realize he never got to inform you of anything new until he’s halfway to his home. He slumps as he continues his walk home, wondering how he got lost in your work.

….. his coworkers notice him reading the cartoon page of the newspaper now whenever he’s on break. One of them has even started talking to Yuri about it.

‘So you’re also a fan?’

‘You… read them, sir?’

Reasons To Keep You Here (Yuri x AFAB Immigrant Reader Trying to Get a Visa) Part 1

I got this idea as I was messing around with the original concept I thought of with you being the Forger's neighbor. I feel this Y/N needs to be gendered, as the anime is set in an old timey period with very conservative views being a big part of the character conflicts given. So everyone regards you as a woman, but not one that fits the country's idealistic mold. Along with dressing mostly in gender-nonconforming ways and taking on jobs of any kind (including some that are considered masculine)-

You were not born there. While not from the opposing country they're at war with, Westalis, you came from a neighboring, smaller and poorer nation as a baby with your mother. Your mother managed to marry someone here. They've had other children and managed to live in some normalcy… except you’ve always stuck out and been slightly ostracized by your family.

You love your siblings, and would’ve stayed if only for them, but your step-father kicked you out of the house as soon as you turned 18, and you've been living alone since. It hasn't... been easy. Despite living there all your life, you’re still considered an 'outsider', so the only work you were able to find has been low paying jobs. You took anything and everything, leading to you gaining a lot of odd skills. Though you were always a good worker, you lack any real presence… and you never really reached out to people anyways. You haven’t had much luck making friends as your life continued.

Finally, you found an opportunity you couldn’t pass up. A job you can actually enjoy and do from home as an artist for Sunday paper cartoons. You use a masculine pen-name of course, the paper demanded it. You were worried at first about failing getting any attention, but to your surprise, your cartoon is mildly popular with kids.

So you’re content as is, even as you barely scrape by with rent being so high. The apartment is close to the editing office and its crime rate is low, making it worth it for you. Still… it has its downsides too. There's been moments where the neighbors have caught your bizarre outfits, things that people of your low background wouldn’t blink at, but with their middle class sensibilities… they have begun to talk.

An adult woman living alone and looking like that? There's something wrong with you. Not meddling with the neighbors, you stay blissfully unaware of the rumors spreading.

Hmm, perhaps you have been hitting a rough patch and were running out of ideas for your comic just as the Forger family moved next door. Though you would normally keep to yourself, a mix up with you trying to snoop around to get ideas has Anya take an interest in your line of work. Though your identity was meant to stay a secret, she quickly realized who you were. She’s a fan of your cartoon and has taken a passion to better her art skills as a way to get closer to Damian. So, she begins asking you for lessons and now you’ve been roped up with befriending her. Her mother, Yor, jumps in too, coming in for lessons sometimes just to talk to you. She’s so excited over the prospect of having a close female friend! And her father, Loid… is using this as an opportunity to seem 'more normal' to others and to use you as a babysitting service that’s much more reliable than Franky.

So, you are firmly stuck now as their solidified family friend. It’s been relatively alright, though you’ve had some confusing moments, you always chalked it up to your anxiety making you feel out of place and never that the Forgers are genuinely all weird people.

Enter Yuri. The way Yor always talked about him, you had the mental picture that he was smart, kind, soft. A sweetheart intellectual who would never hurt a fly. You remember all this as you hesitantly approach the figure sitting in front of the Forger's door with wilting flowers. He's been there for an hour.

You know he is Yor's brother by his features. It's unmistakable. Feeling a sense of duty as her friend, and a bit of sympathy, you approach him to tell him that the Forgers went on a cruise.

Yuri glares but asks when they're expected to be back. You crunch the numbers and suspect it'll probably be one more day. He gets up to leave and you offer to call him to let him know when they return. Yuri does not take the offer.

He thinks you are hitting on him, and making an obviously disgusted face, he tells you that you should pay more attention to your dressage rather than trying to meddle with the brothers of your neighbors. Your initial friendliness is immediately revoked and now you dislike the guy.

But the days go on and more adventures are had by the family out of public view. You have more run ins with Yuri. From him visiting as you were helping Yor with dinner, to run ins in the streets, you're both still not on friendly terms but he's grown more accustomed to you. It helps that he knows your entire life story with the background check he did on you. He knows you're an immigrant. With a new law passing, you'd probably be sent back soon anyways. It wasn't his concern. Until...

There's another day where he wasn’t informed of Yor having plans. He crashed the night of the couple's supposed monthly anniversary. Yuri is livid at first, drinking all their alcohol and planting his feet to stay and not let them have their romantic day but Yor is firm with her orders that night.

He is interrupting.

He needs to leave.

Yuri is... heartbroken by her tone. He stumbles out of the apartment in a daze. He's still standing outside the door ten minutes after they shut it. You were getting out to take the trash and nearly scream when you see his depressed, dark, and drunken figure. After calming yourself down, you can guess what's happened.

'Yor didn't tell you today was their anniversary?'

Yuri's shoulders slump a little more. You sighed but move to the way of the trash cans anyways. You're sympathetic to his plight, but you’re dealing with your own issues. With a new law being implemented, you’re going to have to marry someone soon to be able to stay in the country. Not even your work would vouch for you; they were already planning to lay you off if you didn't find someone soon. Their last words in their letter, 'It was about time you stopped anyways.'

.... a devious idea formed in your head. You dropped your garbage off. You return and he's still slumped on the wall between the doors. Instead of going inside, you sit beside him, nervous but desperate.

You know about his creepy obsession with his sister. You know about his disgust with other women. You've respected it and he's let you be. Now to put that trust to the test...

Yuri, even inebriated, could sense something was coming, and he hardened his face on instinct. He looked you dead in the eye.

'What do you want?'

Your breath is shaky. 'I need help...'

'And?'

You take a gulp. You work your nerves to be courageous. And you finally tell him. 'I have a deal for you… if you're interested.'

He has to find you a husband.

What. The hell.

The first to know about your marriage was, of course, the Forger family. Yor burst into tears and went for a bone-crunching hug with both you and Yuri in her arms.

Loid stood behind her, a hand under his chin and he thought about this new development. You with Yuri? …. This could be good or bad for him. Surely, Yuri would insist on moving to your apartment to be close to Yor. But a married life could lead for a good distraction… Loid was cautious on the whole but gave a warm smile and congratulations. He had to turn this to his advantage.

Anya…. Anya was confused. She knew the two of you were NEVER romantically together. Sure you might have gotten friendlier but… what happened to the plan to marry you to someone else? Why Yuri? Had you really become that desperate??? Her thoughts stayed with her as Yor continued her cooing.

‘OH, I KNEW YOU TWO HAD SOMETHING! Yuri, you were so adorable when you kept asking me questions about her! And I saw the way you looked at him, Y/N, and how interested you were in my stories!!! I knew it, I knew it!’ Yor let you both go. You nearly fell to the floor but Yuri caught you and you both slumped together as Yor continued her excited bouncing, heading to the kitchen.

‘THIS CALLS FOR A CELEBRATION! I’m making us a FEAST!!! Oh that’s right… I need to buy some stuff. STAY RIGHT THERE! I’ll be right back!’

‘I’ll go with you. We might as well do our entire grocery run today. You two can look after Anya, right?’ Loid wanted some more time to think about how to approach this. Also… he needed to make sure Yor wasn’t planning on making one of her ‘special dishes.’ You agreed to staying behind. Yuri crossed his arms but did the same. As soon as the married couple left, your new fiancé gave out a big sigh.

‘…. Yor took this way too well. Did she really think we liked each other?’

‘I know… it’s a little… off-putting to realize she always hoped we would do this. No offense but…’

‘No, same here. Eugh.’

‘… atleast we can use this to our advantage? No one suspects a thing!’

‘Yeah… I guess…’ You turned to look at him. He was still visibly pouting.

‘…. You’re sad Yor wasn’t upset.’

‘Shut up.’

You gave him a sympathetic look… which was replaced by shock as you noticed Anya’s…. peculiar face behind Yuri. Eyes squinted, mouth taught, the little girl oozed disapproval and pity. You panicked, wondering how much she heard.

‘Oh, Anya, haha! It’s been a while since we played any games, right? How about it? You get to choose!’

Anya would normally be delighted to play anything with you, you always made it easy for her to win and had the best reactions! But…

Anya’s gaze was fixed on Yuri, who felt her stare and glowered back. As usual, his violent thoughts were broadcasted but largely unneeded with how intense his face was.

‘Pipsqueak should keep quiet and behave if she knows what’s good for her.’

Anya sighed, much like Yuri had just minutes prior. She turned to you and patted your back.

‘Marriage… is so complicated…. I wish you luck.’

‘Huh? What? Anya?!’

There was no ceremony. You both agreed it was unnecessary. The prospect of making this sham public with a show like that… really put the two of you, who are such private people, off. All it amounted to was signing paperwork Yuri could make sure was processed properly himself, and the celebration food and gifts the Forger family kept insisting on giving them. You were content with it only being this… but Yuri still remembered your brothers.

As you both walked around your apartment, cleaning for his eventual move to your place… he offered to invite your family for a dinner. You responded almost automatically.

‘A dinner?! Now?? You… you haven’t even moved in yet! They’ll… they’ll know somethings up because there was no ceremony. My step- dad keeps up with the news, they’re going to know about the law! They’re going to be very judgmental of you for marrying me! They’ll think I tricked you… or that you’re a p-pervert, or… or…. They might not even-‘

‘Hey!’ Yuri was surprised by your strong reaction. He dropped what he was using to wipe at a wall to come and grab your shoulders. ‘Hey, hey, it was just a suggestion. Not for them, but for your brothers…’

He knew your home life was rough but… he was confident in his ability to deal with your parents. You shouldn’t worry.

‘I’ve dealt with people like your step-dad. By the time he leaves, he’ll be so impressed by me, he’ll be begging you to let your brothers visit.’

Was tagged by @jasminethetransvampire so I'll do this because I'm always passive-aggressively trying to get people to ask me about my fics on other sites.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Anything...though, according to my dashboard, I specialize in Homestuck, Chainsaw Man, Marvel Comics, Attack On Titan and Bleach. The most recent one I did outside of those categories was for an anime called Dai-Guard so...there you go.

4. What are your top 5 fics by Kudos?

Be patient with me, I don't know how to hyperlink:

For a while, the one-shot I was most proud of. With all its anachronisms and unapologetic crassness, I love this fic for being the first Kobeni/Quanxi fic I ever wrote and for fitting Chainsaw Man's aesthetic the most. I still maintain that this ship is the most likely to work in canon and their dynamic would work exactly like I showed it here. If there's one disappointment I have, it's that this isn't my most famous fic.

My longest chapter fic, the longest thing I actually wrote (counting my own goddamn novel) and probably the longest labor of love in the entire catalogue...and it's about a ship between a dead auxillary character and a supporting character. There goes my moral high ground to Ships That Pass In The Night...I worked on this fic every day, missing one for my birthday, and used a site called Mythica as a template for what to put in there. The concept is stupid, the plot is uneven, it doesn't really conclude so much as stop...and I love it more than anything. If I'm remembered for any piece of work, I want to be this. It's all my love for these interpretations of the characters put into one story. I will never regret uploading this.

Number 3 in the rankings. She's not my favorite but I'll give her this: she's earned it. Probably one of the darkest things I've written (counting Mamba Ugly) and one of my meaner depictions of Makima but either standalone or in my bizarro Chainsaw Man canon, this story shows exactly why everyone should fear the Control Devil. Talking myself up is weird; just read the fic if you haven't and tell me if you're creeped out or not.

...You know, I'm the one who wrote a mid M/M pairing for the yucks one day. I got what I deserved.

I don't really hate this fic so much I despise how it's my second most popular one. I pour sweat and tears into hundreds of F/F fics and this takes off? Really? Not Duty To The Party? I got literal death threats over that one!

Before anyone feels too sorry for me, my line of logic for this one was: "Pieck's pretty hot. It's a shame that there's not more yuri of her...how about I ship her with every named female character in the series?"

Yeah, all of them. The little girls crush on her or grow up to pursue her and everybody else...the tone shifts so I don't want to make anyone vomit but it gets pretty intense. This is kind of me at my worst, even compared to the above examples, so proceed with caution. I'm pretty sure this fic is only doing well because of all of the tags. It's definitely not the quality.

5. Do you respond to comments?

Constantly. Unless it's just "nice" or "emojis", I'll take the time to answer questions, say thank you or even just participate in good-natured dunking on me. I like questions about my headcanons and clarifying what happened in fics because I like to leave things ambiguous. If you're not just being an ass and or trying to get people riled up, leave me a note and I'll get back to you!

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

If not Bonus With No Pay Raise, it's probably Starved. The meanest I got to Kobeni and the most twisted I wrote Fami. Par for the course in how I write Makima though...pretty sure I killed Kobeni at the end but at that point, it was a mercy.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

The last part of Kobeni Has A Good Life, a collection of my Chainsaw Man Divergence series, has the one below called:

This gives me the fuzzies whenever I read it because I gay and it's a happy ending for Kobeni. Whatever happens next for her in this universe, I want to make sure she's content while doing it. And if you don't want to comb through THE ENDLESS DESERT that is KTQ, you're perfectly justified in stopping here.

8. Do you hate on fics?

I don't like the tags in a fic, I don't read it. Simple. I don't leave angry comments and I don't go and hate-read for the sake of it. When I see a fic that has a pairing or a situation that ticks me off, I just get inspired to write several more with my own tastes. That's my version of pettiness.

9. Do write smut? If so, what kind?

Yeah.

I like intense stuff or, sparring that, weird stuff. Stuff that's fun to write and imagine, anything that gets me motor running or is entertaining to show through text. Smut is much easier for me to write so I write a lot of it, although I kind of want to more G rated stuff.

10. Do you write crossovers? If so, what's the craziest one you've written?

Yeah.

Probably not the wildest crossover I wrote but this should fill you in on the fact that 1.) if I write a crossover, I probably put Homestuck in it and 2.) I like putting them in anime and Marvel. Speaking of:

Did you guys know there's a grown up version of Molly Hayes?

This is the version I put with Homestuck characters in this non-continuity series. It's weird! Super weird!

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of!

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I don't think I have...but I get Spanish and Chinese comments on my fics sometimes so...maybe?

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Nah but if I know the person, I'd be happy to.

14. What's your all-time-favorite ship?

For Chainsaw Man, I love my stupid made-up crack ship of Kobeni Higashiyama/Quanxi/Michiko Tendo. I'm also very partial to Powerbeni and AsaYuko. For Homestuck, I'm a basic Rosemary bitch who also loves the crossover ship (that only I am powerful enough to be privy to) of Feferi Peixes/Molly Hayes. I enjoy writing Mikasa/Historia more than I should and for Bleach...Sui-Feng/Happiness (re: any woman in the Soul Society...and Kanaya (see Crossover above...or just search for the fic. It's not hard to find.))

15. What's a WIP that you want to finish but probably never will?

Either the above mentioned Spice Rack or this one story about Terezi Pyrope and Molly Hayes traveling around and going on martial arts adventures. I had fun writing it but it wasn't getting attention and there was other stuff I wanted to do so I've just left it behind.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue, being "normal" about queers and portraying happy couples. I like F/F and M/M and while I get weird with it, I also want to show that weird can be happy. KTQ is mainly written for that purpose alone.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I rely on beige prose and can be too clinical when I'm trying to get through a scene. My smut scenes, ironically, tend to go by quickly because I rush through the actions to focus on the feelings. I honestly just like to show the characters hanging out through sex instead of putting it to paper, if that makes sense.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?

I use Google Translate and try to keep it simple. I dread the day someone in the comments tell me that I wrote complete gibberish...it's coming soon, I can feel it.

19. First Fandom you wrote for?

No More Heroes!

I wrote a couple of fics for No More Heroes, actually. It was my Chainsaw Man back in the day. I still love it now, especially for its music.

20. Favorite Fic you've ever written?

Three way tie between Alphabet, Closet Space and:

My first Homestuck/Runaways crossover, written when I was saner. It has typos, it's cringy, it's rushed at the end and YOU WILL LOVE IT OR I'LL DESTROY YOU.

Oh, fun! I always wonder if people are reading for the first time along with me. I'm sure you've overtaken me already by now!

I don't think I'd have as much fun with the blog if it was less blind. Even the knowledge that the trolls existed was enough to heavily influence my theories.

Aren't they thirteen?

Granted, we don't know if trolls mature at the same rate as humans, but they certainly seem to be in that age range to me.

Nepeta, resident matchmaker, seems unsure about the current status of the Sollux/Aradia relationship, but she'd definitely drawn a heart there before. Plus, Aradia immediately identified the '8oyfriend' as Sollux, so there is something going on with them.

If it does, and he did, then that's pretty clever - but unfortunately for him, it's probably futile. There are surely a million other ways she could manipulate his desires.

I know Homestuck is controversial, but I always had the vague idea that, like Undertale, its reputation had a lot more to do with the fandom than the property itself.

I'm surprised there's that many people who say the comic is bad. The comic is great. Even if, worst-case-scenario, it jumps the shark on the very next page, there's still so much to love.

I guess this is a good explanation for why his name is so close to Lord British - thus, their similar invincibility schticks really are coincidental.

The former works well - although, I've just noticed on reread that he hasn't actually referred to himself as a doctor. He's just 'Doc'.

That said, I have reason to believe that he is, in fact, a real doctor.

Maybe he really is a gambling man.

Well, Terezi is referencing his comic before Earth even exists...

So it's like the SBaHJifier gag, but for the whole comic?

That sounds ambitious, but interesting, especially if it's doing everything you say it is. Any fanwork that people think was written by Hussie must be something special.

In retrospect, her own statement - which came after the two above - was, indeed, deliberately vague. It's supposed to make you wonder which of the two options she was talking about. As far as I can tell, there was no reason to assume it couldn't be Vriska - she'd even told Karkat that she was going to be the 'real leader', so we knew she was planning a power grab.

Anyway, I defaulted to her, since she'd talked about her co-leader arrangement only a couple of pages beforehand. I don't think I even remembered Equius was an option until he spoke to her later. Can't catch 'em all!

I was skeptical about that line initially - but Vriska honestly doesn't seem to be much of a liar, so I think part of her really did see Aradia as a friend.

I personally doubt Aradia ever felt anything positive towards Vriska - she's a blue-blood, after all, a hateful sn0b - but that doesn't stop them being friends. After all, the same could be said about Karkat, towards Gamzee. Trolls just seem to see friendships differently.

I try to avoid queueing stuff - gotta put the live in 'liveblog', after all!

There are occasional exceptions, though. For example, if I answer a lot of (non-compiled) asks at once, and don't want to fill up people's dashboards, I might queue them to space them out a little - but never more than an hour or so in advance.

Really, the answer to your question is 'neither', since I don't have a schedule. Lately, I've been posting about four days a week, and each liveblog session will last for two to four posts - but that's all subject to change, depending on my mood, my energy levels, random life stuff and, frankly, the phase of the moon. Properly scheduling this blog has proved impossible, so I'm just embracing it at this point.

If there's one thing that Aradia and Vriska can agree on, it's that an Equius-made arm is good for only one thing - rippin' out hearts!

I suppose if your website pays your rent, you don't really need a day job - but still, I'm surprised that no life stuff got in the way in all that time. Hell, it's already happened to me - and this comic is surely way easier to analyze than it is to write!

I'm just curious as to why he's seeking out Karkat, specifically. Jack seems to work independently, not taking orders from his Queen - so what's motivating him, this early in the game?

No reason it can't be both, right? This is probably one of the most emotionally intense things to happen to her since her death, and it just so happens to coincide with her 'resurrection'. Frankly, I'd have been more surprised if she didn't lose her shit.

Also - damn, I didn't notice he was mirroring her '0k' catchphrase. No, Equius. No one was 0k with that.
