The last two weeks have been such a shit show. I feel things pretty deeply as a rule, but my emotions are really all over the place lately, for so many reasons. I couldn't find a way to settle my thoughts, or ease my distress, so I made this DIVE SMACK inspired blackout poetry with a page from Sigmund Freud's Interpretation of Dreams. At my writing desk. I just full stopped what I was doing and grabbed some pens. And I found, by doing this, that what was missing from my life for the last few years was my first creative loves, fine art and poetry. Author Life Month 2021 Day 25: Treat Yourself I’m a big believer in signs from the universe. When I’m working on a book and I see a T-shirt, or a piece of artwork, or a coffee cup with a saying that somehow touches on an element of my books, I buy it. For me it’s like a talisman. A good reminder that the book has purpose and meaning. When I was creating my office last year, I scoured the internet for artwork that I wanted to hang on the walls. I couldn’t find anything that spoke to me. Then one day I went into my local home store and this picture was up on the wall, beaming in a bright ray of light. I knew it was waiting for me to take it home. It was like a symbol, nudging at me, forcing me to remember that hard work and perseverance do indeed pay off! Now when I go into my office and I’m unmotivated to write I stare at this picture. . . . On this Writer Wednesday, I thought I’d share one of my biggest issues when I fast draft: telling verbs. It’s easy to put these in as placeholders as you work, but in my first round of revisions my immediate goal is to get rid of every telling verb I see. . For example... “ I heard the sounds of a violin in the next room.” When I see this I instantly want to change it so the reader is not pulled from the narrative. To avoid the “telling” verb, I can easily replace this sentence with “The sounds of a violin floated in from the next room.” You still achieve the same end goal, creating a scene where the reader hears the sound without actually telling them what your character is hearing. By making this simple change, you continue to keep the reader engaged while also giving visceral tone to the scene. .
