. . . On this Writer Wednesday, I thought I’d share one of my biggest issues when I fast draft: telling verbs. It’s easy to put these in as placeholders as you work, but in my first round of revisions my immediate goal is to get rid of every telling verb I see. . For example... “ I heard the sounds of a violin in the next room.” When I see this I instantly want to change it so the reader is not pulled from the narrative. To avoid the “telling” verb, I can easily replace this sentence with “The sounds of a violin floated in from the next room.” You still achieve the same end goal, creating a scene where the reader hears the sound without actually telling them what your character is hearing. By making this simple change, you continue to keep the reader engaged while also giving visceral tone to the scene. .
