Studio Tour Seeking Artists

In its efforts to serve the community with art and cultural programming while supporting area working artists, the Wheeling Arts and Cultural Commission is excited to announce its 4th annual Greater Wheeling Artists Studio Tour and is seeking artists to participate. This unique opportunity will allow the public into the private studios of our local artists while also seeing how their art is made. This year’s event is Saturday, April 25, 2020 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is a self-directed driving tour. Participants use a map to visit the studios of participating artists. In past years, we have had a broad range of artisans such as painters, woodworkers and even a quilter, among others. Attendees may choose some or all studios to visit. They can talk with the artists, pick up some pointers and buy art from the source. This is a family friendly event and children are welcome on the tour. Cheryl Harshman, an Arts and Cultural Commission member and artist featured on previous tours, said, “There are so many amazing people quietly working away in their studios. This is a great opportunity for the public to meet interesting craftspeople who are who are really doing things out of the box.”

Show the Creative Process

Participating artists are given creative freedom in how they present their studio and artwork. We do request that they show the public the creative process, which typically means doing live demos throughout the day, displaying completed works of art, allowing folks to walk around the studio, answering questions and telling a bit about yourself. Past artists have even allowed the public to try their hand at creating works of art. Ultimately, it is up to the artist to decide what they would like to do for the event. All artists in Ohio County and in neighboring counties are encouraged to apply and will be equally considered. Interested artists can access the application online at this link. This is the first pattern I created on my own! I went to ridiculous lengths to grid the pattern, and once it was finished, I had to make another. The heart is over my the county I live in. I love my fabulous home state of West Virginia, and plan on finishing them in hoops and selling them at my local art gallery.

The show we’re playing this week is the one-year anniversary of us playing shows, and I’m so excited by how much we’ve grown as artists over this time. Our first show was a house gig with Brook Pridemore and Jake McKelvie, and I remember sitting and realizing that for the first time I was sharing the stage with another artist. I still hold both artists in my heart dearly and hope we cross paths again.
