Alice Boughton (1866 – 1943) was an early 20th-century American photographer who was also active in Feminist and Socialist causes using photography as a form of personal expression. Boughton was a prominent member of the New Woman movement that emerged in the late 19th century. New Woman referred to independent women seeking changes to the status-quo that has been set by the patriarchy. They also sought independence via physical changes to their clothing and activities, such as playing sports previously considered inappropriate for women.

Boughton studied at the Pratt School of Art and Design in the 1880s, and opened her own portrait studio on East 23rd Street in New York in 1890. During her time, she became one of the most distinguished portrait photographers in New York.

Her platinum print on tissue entitled “Summer” has a soft and grainy texture with a sense of thick and hot air that we can almost feel. “Dawn” is a photogravure, which was published in the 1909 issue of Camera Work, Alfred Stieglitz's influential quarterly journal dedicated to establishing photography as a fine art. Boughton's photogravure images were highly regarded for their painterly qualities and artistic ambition. (From Pratt Institute’s website)

“Dawn” is a daring image of a female nude with her back to us, standing in a shallow pool of water as she faces a larger body of water. She holds a ball as if to throw it, but there is no one visible in the landscape to catch it.

J'ai pris un peu de temps à le faire parce que j'avais beaucoup de travail (pour un projet spicy 🌶🕷 qui va tout péter, trop hâte de vous montrer), mais j'ai fait ma première exposition 🥹 lors des portes ouvertes d’Atomic City dans le 20e arrondissement. Un moment qui m'a été super important. Oui blablabla comme tout le monde je fais de la photo depuis toujours. Non. J'en fais depuis que j'ai 10 ans, mon père était cadreur, il m'a transmit son oeil et sa culture cinématographique. C'est un véritable héritage pour moi. Aujourd'hui tant bien dans mon métier de Décoratrice dans le cinéma qu’en tant que Photographe, cet héritage court dans mes veines. 🔗 Je ne pensais pas un jour pouvoir dépasser mes craintes (se sentir illégitime, syndrome de l'imposteur toussa) mais je l'ai fait. On m'a même acheté des photos (merci ❤️). Oui c'était la consécration pour moi. J'avais même fais une petite installation autour du sujet qui anime le plus mon travail : la temporalité. J'ai aussi accroché le recueil de poésie de Emilie Dickinson qui m'inspire énormément : Lieu-dit l'Eternité 🌀Temps : 1. Notion fondamentale conçue comme un milieu infini dans lequel se succèdent les événements 2. Mouvement ininterrompu par lequel le présent devient le passé, considéré souvent comme une force agissant sur le monde, sur les êtres Je souhaiterai donc remercier mes amis qui sont venus me soutenir c'était très important pour moi. Mais aussi ceux qui me soutiennent tous les jours mais qui ont été absents. Winter into spring, inside goes to outside. To reflect time and its slow or quick passage, I continue my experiments in infrared photography. Self portraits serve as an accessible way to express emotion. Shots of winter and its grey tones stands out from to the harsh contrast of bright sunlight. Movement and stillness produce different results. 1) the street during snowfall 2) collection of footprints I follow to the store 3) waiting, in bed 4) pausing as I dress 5) my sister in warm weather, looking away 6) me standing in the sun, swaying
