Hail and well met!
My name is Cherry, and this is my blog dedicated to my WOL, Hegg Ragnar. I'll post gpose and other WOL and FFXIV related stuff here!
I will do ro questions, so if you have a question for Hegg (or for me lol) just ask!
Interacts from @/themysticalcherrydragon
WOL intro and inspo under the cut 🩵
This is my boy Hegg
Tumblr media
He is a 6'11.8" (212.85 cm) lion man. Has pale blue eyes and freckles to match! All the markings on his fur are a bright white that his parents can't find reason for, almost like he has been touched by light 😏 He is 24 at the start of ARR (which I hc lasting for 3 years, heavans ward for 2, stormblood for 1, and shadowbringers for 1) I'm currently in post shadowbringers, so the boy is 30.
Started as a Marauder/Warrior until stormblood, when he picked up a gunblade again for the first time in 20 years. (Usually tank, sometimes heal and dps)
Hegg was born Hegg Morningstar Amirka to a Hrothgar queen named Brinn Mirka, who was attempting to preserve Hrothgar culture after the Bozja incident. He was born the "oldest" of a set of triplets, his sister named Stesha, and his brother named Jarek. When they were 8 years old, his brother and sister were killed in a Galrean attack. The scene traumatized him so much that he was unable to speak or make any sounds until he was 15 years old. When he was 14, his mother and (step)father, Valdasyn Amirka, sent him away in a Garlean cargo ship. The hope was that he could sneak away at a port because the stationed soilders wanted to kill him to spur the local hrothgar into summoning an Eikon. While the ship was in the water, it was attacked by a group of pirates called The Crimson Liberty, a group dedicated to robbing the empire and re-selling their gear to their enemies. The captain and man who finds the young boy below deck is a Hrothgar named Myzard Ragnar, formally known as Radi Amirka. Unbeknownst to either man, he is Hegg's biological father, who was captured by the empire to fight for them and presumed dead. For the next 10 years, Hegg sails with the Crimson Liberty, making friends along the way until his Captain realizes who Hegg is. At the age of 24, Hegg takes up his captains name and makes for Limsa to become an adventurer.
Tumblr media
Aaand because this man lives rent-free in my head, it wasn't just enough to have the pictures of who inspired him... I gotta list the reasons
Nausicca: A spit fire royal willing to do anything for his people. Has a facination with plants, specifically with their medicinal purposes. Has a "way" with animals that no one can quite pin down the origin of. Will not hesitate to sacrifice himself. Seriously, it's a wonder this man is still alive.
Arthur Morgan: Loyal to a fault. Workhorse. Has a soft spot for kiddos and animals. Has an easier time expressing emotions with physical affection and action than words. Unsure of his place in an everchanging world
Jack Sparrow: Listen for strangers, Hegg has a quiet stoic exterior, but those who get to truly know him, they'll see he is just a goofball. A silly little trickster that never fully shows his hand. He's a pirate tried and true, but he never forsakes his morals
Indiana Jones: An explorer with a love of knowledge and the thrill of adventure. Strong sense of justice. A surprising double life (not many expect this world renowned adventurer to run a successful forge that he doesn't use his fame to advertise). Willing to get his hands dirty, which often involves him sustaining a few injuries, he doesn't mind. Lots of connections and friends all over, most of whom are willing to do anything for him and his. tries not to let his phobias rule his life but they just keep popping up at the most inconvenient of times
Garnet: Stoic, grounded, wise in experience. A leader and a soilder, willing to take up the mantle of leadership and the drop of a hat, but equally willing to follow those he respects. A romantic at heart. Has a red and blue motif going on
Han Solo: a roughish heart-throb. Charismatic. Will try to talk his way out first, failing that will shoot his way out. A *little* trigger happy. Once befriended, you've got him as a ride or die in your corner forever. Questionable connections. Likes to pretend it takes alot for him to do something, this is not the case at all
Oh my gods, you made it through all that?? That was only the spark notes 😏 if you wanna know more, you gotta ask 🩵

If you character were to be any boss in the game, whether it be a dungeon, trial, guildhest, etc., what would they look like? Can you give some ideas as to what their boss music would be like? Maybe mechanics? What might be the story as to why some adventurers would face them?
I have 2 boss encounters!
The first one is Prime Lightwarden | Forgiven Murder
Appearance: Lian's torso is attached to a dragon's body. The scales on her torso, arms and face have all spread until only small areas of skin remain. Her hands are full claws. She has four, curling, ram-like horns on her head. Her eyes are fully red.
Phase 1:
Fratricide: 6 items marked “Supplies” will spawn in a circle. Fratricide is cast 6 times, approx every 6% health. The cast duration is 4s. ONE person must pick up the supplies, enabling the “carrying” debuff per cast of Fraticide. They will die when the cast ends and be unable to be rezed. The recommended order is: Offtank, dps, dps, heal, dps, dps. If no one picked up Supplies, it’s a wipe.
Patricide: Reduces aggro target’s health to 1.
Matricide: Distributed damage. This does decreased damage as party members are lost to Fratricide.
You want to end the phase with a tank and healer, but dps and healer will do in a pinch. You must healer LB 3 in the phase transition to move on.
Phase 2:
Sickness: Purple fire on the ground that applies a small DoT when standing in it.
Exile: Knockback. If you fall off the arena, you cannot be rezed.
Robbery: Full party reduced to 1 health.
Tank Lian in the center. Don’t get thrown off, don’t stand in the fire.  Phase 2 ends when you drain her health bar.
Phase 3:
MASH MASH MASH (Active Maneuver)
Warrior of Light: Medium-sized circular AOE. Shadows warn for position before the circle appears.
Warrior of Darkness: Gaze -> confusion.
Savior of Ishgard: Large frostbite AOE
Hero of Ala Mhigo: After the cast bar, Lian will teleport around the arena, backstabbing three people at random before returning to the original position.
Champion of Eorzea: Unmarked, one of Raging Bull, Grace of the Elementals and Captain’s Orders. Raging Bull: Frontal cone Grace of the Elementals: Gaze, applies debuff preventing heals from skills Captain’s Orders: Second on the aggro table becomes first on the aggro table and is put to 1 health
For Champion and Hero, healers should make sure everyone is topped off.  It’s harder than it sounds like because Warrior of Light is more frequent than you think it will be. Make sure the DPS focus on not getting hit by Warrior of Light more than on DPSing.
Music: Oldest Daughter Syndrome (a fast-paced bop, with an eerie chorus doing call and response)
The arena is concentric circles with golden twin carp motif and is positioned outside of the false Amaurot!
I also have a Villain AU!
Lian is approached after her village is destroyed in the 7th Calamity. They ask if she would bring back her people at any cost, the answer is yes. She doesn't ask for details because she's so broken at that point.
Ascians collect the keystones that sustained the protective bubble over her underwater village. They then use the stored aether & dynamis to transform Lian into a primal a la Tsukiyomi. Lian is an Eastern dragon aspected to water, but still red and yellow highlights like her hair
Her monologues call the WoL/Scions an infection, accuses them of cultural Imperialism, calls the Eorzean gods blights upon the world and equates Hydaelyn to a ghost king, destroying the world in her own image. Early in the campaign against her, Lian can still maintain an "au'ra" form, though she has substantially more scales than the typical au'ra and her footsteps leave behind a trail of water wherever she goes. Her scales are also wine-red.
Attacks: Bloody Depths Boundless Sea Riptide Midnight Tsunami Whale Fall (enrage)
Her campaign comes between 4.1 and 4.2 and takes place Southeast of Kugane in the Glass Ocean
The song is demure, with trailing flutes and wails between stanzas. The arena is sectioned by a Dharmachakra pattern on the floor and ringed with falling water.

Pointless bits of Cloudrest trivia that I inflict on my guildmates and friends whenever we run:
The mechanics each of the Welkynar are known for are actually their gryphons attacks. Roaring flare, hoarfrost, and voltaic overload are all from their gryphons, which is why the mechanic continues even if the shade goes down, but stops during the mini fights if you kill the gryphon first
Relequen is their leader, with a title called Wing Captain though he is referred to as Sir Relequen. He also wrote the style book for the Welkynar motif. Each of the Welkynar's proper title who is not Relequen is just Welkynar (name).
There's four members of the order at a time, representing the four cardinal directions.
None of them are wearing the armor type and weapon for their respective set. Relequen is a stam dps set, but he wears light armor and uses a staff. Siroria is a mag dps set but she wears medium armor and uses a sword and shield. Galenwe is a tank set and he does wear heavy armor with one exception, but uses a greatsword. Olorime is the worst though: healing set, wears heavy armor and uses a shield and mace, and uses templar jabs alongside the players in execute
The one exception for Galenwe is that he wears medium armor shoes in the same color as Siroria. However, his shade wears heavy armor shoes. I have no clue what this is about.
While Belanaril and Silaeda (Relequen and Siroria's gryphons) dont have translated meanings to their names, Falarielle and Darremalatu (Galenwe and Olorime's) do. "Cold Beauty" and "Mercy Truth". UESP also has she/her pronouns for all of the gryphons except Darre, who Olorime uses he/him for. I'm not sure how reliable this is though, as I cannot think of any sources on this.
Relequen makes a dad joke during the Z'Maja fight. "I think you'll find my gryphon quite shocking!"
Galenwe tried to stop the others from bringing Z'Maja into the city and appears the most academic of the four.
Welkynar share a magical bond with their gryphons, with the bird becoming an extension of their very selves. Thoughts, feelings, needs, everything is connected. During the mini fights, it's likely - based on the dialogue the shadow Welkynar have - that they can in fact feel the pain you're inflicting on their shadow gryphon. Even with Z'Maja's shadow magic mind controlling them, that bond still comes through above that.
If even one Welkynar doesn't survive, each of the surviving ones has their power drained from them to the point where they do not believe they can continue on as a Gryphon Knight. They accept an early retirement and mentoring new Welkynar. Only doing a +3 allows the order to continue on.
If it wasn't obvious, Nocturnal or one of her daedra/cultists gifted Z'Maja with her magical amulet that gives her her power. See the heavy attack being called Nocturnal's Favor, and her magic being shadow magic.
They're sexy

How to make games: Hero Shooters
So, class, today I posit this little question to you all: Do you want to be the next Blizzard? Fuck no, you don't want to be "Don't you guys have phones?" Blizzard; you wanna be Blizzard from 5-10 years ago when they were at the height of their popularity. But that's not what I'm shooting for here. Do you want a fount of endless revenue? Do you want to do the absolute baseline minimum in terms of engine and game design to actually create a game but aren't creatively and ethically bankrupt enough to make a gacha game? Do you want to build a game whose rules, designs, and themes were just stolen from the effort of others? Do you really like Rule 34? Then it sounds to me like you want to make a Hero Shooter game! Hero shooters are easy to make on account they fundamentally have only three gameplay modes: push a payload, kill the other team, and kill the other team while standing on top of a glowing circular thing. They're also equally easy to design as they require no thematic consistency whatsoever and what little writing you'll be expected to bother with will simply be character bios, which you can keep so vague as to be virtually meaningless. There's never a 'story' in a hero shooter game and what semblance of one does exist is pretense for the non-canon aforementioned three game modes you'll be forced to build around. Best of all, the individual mechanics of each hero are easy to design - just steal them from whatever games came before. Now create about three or four maps with some different sorts of themes, but don't make them in any way mechanically varied - the most complex obstacles on any given map should be walls and maybe elevators that move at a very low speed. We're making a hero shooter, not Mario Party, dammit. If anyone asks why you are essentially just reskinning the same maps you can explain that it's to ensure that the game remains a "test of the players's skills" even though that's a bold-faced lie for the same reasons people who play Super Smash Bros as "tests of skill" are full of shit. Meta-gaming retards make games algebra homework instead of fun, but that's precisely what you'll be banking on in this genre. Once you have that, we need to get into the most important thing about hero shooters: the Heroes. Heroes in these games take one of three major roles: 1) The retard scrub DPS heroes - who will be played by the vast majority of your one-trick glory-chasing mentally-stunted community under the pretenses of being 'the most fun' and will be where the better part of your "cool" themes and motifs will be dedicated toward. These work under the key principle of "Shoot everything until it stops moving" and requires zero brainpower whatsoever. 2) The under-estimated doggedly persistent Tank heroes, played by those with either the willingness to learn something other than "Shoot bad guy with gun" or those who find pressing and holding a single button for the duration of the 10 minute match time to be the highlight of their bleak office-job lives. Though, on the other hand, some of the really cool designs will ultimately end up in this family. 3) The unsung gods among men known as the Support heroes, AKA: the ones no one will actually play. These characters will never be given cool or interesting mechanics or designs, but you'll be at liberty to make as many sexy nurse outfits as you can come up with and no one will be able to tell you otherwise. Like an ungodly amalgamation of tanks and DPS, your gameplay experience will boil down to pointing at your target and holding down the button the entire match - except unlike DPS heroes, you'll be shooting at the blue team and not the red team. Now, some might argue that there are technically other families of heroes, like flankers, zone controllers, pseudo-supports who can debuff enemies, but remember that the key to any good hero shooter is keeping everything rock-stupid. Every hero should have only enough abilities to fill a role for the left and right mouse buttons and the Q and E keys. F or R can be for reloading where applicable, but if you demand anything more of your players, you're going to lose their interest because Hero Shooters are hugboxes for sociopaths who care for nothing more than getting that sweet, sweet 5-second long "Play of the Game" replay at the match's end. This is why the character who invariably rips off Team Fortress 2's Demo Man and can kill people he doesn't have direct line of sight with will always be the most popular, without exception. I mean, sure, you can have 30 or 40 heroes, each with incredibly detailed outfits, backstories, kits, and personalities but everyone will just play the Not-Demo Man so you might as well accept that your userbase is going to be the only thing more toxic than a puffer-fish or a modern-day feminist. But I repeat myself. I don't have the time nor particular inclination to tell you exactly what you need to make but I can give you some character types that are obligatory by law to be in any hero shooter game. This will at least give you a start before you realize that being creative is hard and just steal kits from better games than your own. Call of Duty Man - The main DPS hero and usually the face of your game. Typically a grizzled war veteran man and almost exclusively an American if your game is set in the real world - remember, creativity is hard! He'll have a medium-ranged assault rifle and precisely one movement skill and one healing skill in his kit making him a jack-of-all-trades. Will either be loved or hated by your community with no room for in-betweens. Sexy Healer Lady - The main support hero who is literally just TF2's Medic reskinned and with tits. You really don't need to do anything more with her, as the fanbase will handle the rest. And the less said of that, the better. Big Knightly Dude - The main tank hero who has a big shield that, regardless of origin, will be transparent so Call of Duty Man and Not-Demo Man can fire through it while guarded. Probably wields a melee-ranged weapon even if in a modern warfare setting. By law, they can never be shorter than 6'6" (or 7200 cm. Pretty sure I did my conversion right on that). Flamethrower Guy - Literally just TF2's Pyro. Mechanic - Literally just TF2's Engineer. Sniper - Literally just TF2's Sniper. Probably also a voluptuous woman in a tight suit because creativity is fuckin' hard, man. Not-Demo Man - The cancer in your fanbase you will never nerf. Doesn't matter that he can party-wipe the enemy team single-handedly without being anywhere near them because Hero Shooter maps are literally just a set of narrow corridors so his kit is extremely OP. No, better just nerf Sexy Healer Lady again, since your DPS fanbase is pissing and moaning about her again and, this time, not in the same way a cat in heat does. Next, just make characters around elemental themes. Once you have 30 or so, you can get around to actually doing really mechanically interesting and varied heroes, since there's really only like 10-15 good FPS character ideas to begin with. So don't be surprised if you have some overlap. But by then we should hopefully have completed the next major step after the game is made: alienating your fanbase! This step is easy and requires no particular skill or coordination on your part. First, make some events seasonal, such that you have at least a major event every other month. Any more than that and your fans might actually think you're trying to be anything but another generic Korean eSport event, so be sure to space them out and have at least half of them be terrible. Valentine's Day is a good excuse to dress your female heroes sexily, summer games are a fun and not-at-all tired motif, and of course you need some kind of Christmas event. Just make sure these events only run maybe 2 weeks out of the year, have lots of stuff that you can only get during those times and, as said, that most of them are terrible and not fun at all to play. And don't -EVER- make any of them PvE, as that requires coding AI characters and effort and shit - what do you think think this is? Warframe? No, terrible gimmicky PvP events will be a good start because there is no frustration quite as severe as being told you didn't grind hard enough for: Loot boxes! Shit yeah, your hero shooter's gonna have loot boxes in them! Remember, we want maximum money for minimum effort and there's nothing like a Skinner Box within the hugbox that is the sweet dopamine high of popping a loot box open only to get common drops every time! If MMORPGs have taught us anything it's that Sub-1% drops are TOTALLY good game design and aren't at all unethical and an artificial, cheap tactic to keep people hooked on your game. This is why, in addition to the e-peen bolster that is your arbitrary profile ranking also drip-feeding a loot box upon level up that you have "Weekly Resets" for additional loot boxes. This runs on essentially the same principle as a cell phone games making you wait for additional tries to make it more a habit than a game - but that's okay! You can just rationalize it away as "it was the player's CHOICE to buy 300 loot boxes for the low, low price of 799.99 USD!" and not at all a psychological compunction found in human psychology! You're not an unethical douchebag in the slightest! And speaking of douchebags, it's time for the third and most important step in alienating your fanbase: Balancing the Game! What do I mean by that? You might think it's something like "Oh, this one character has an attack that is way too powerful and so it should be retooled in such a way that it either isn't available as-often, or maybe make its hitbox narrower to make the game more skill-based" but you're dead wrong. That requires actual effort and we all know how we feel about that. So, instead, just start an eSports team. Why? So you can listen only to the DPS players from each team and only implement THOSE changes. That way, only tanks and supports get nerfed into irrelevance and since no one in eSports is ever going to play those roles anyway, who cares? Who needs healers when you respawn to 100% after 7 seconds of dying?! Who cares if the majority of your fans hate these changes and that you end up completely destroying the kits and frameworks of their favorite heroes with needless, superfluous, unwelcomed tweaks? God-damn it, the Not-Demo Man needs to be able to wipe out an enemy team with a 3-second Time to Kill! No questions! I have a very specific vision!! Once your fanbase has been alienated - congrats! You're no longer obliged to release new heroes and levels! The responsibility of server upkeep and releasing new content twice a year are lifted! Now, just reskin the entire game top-down and release a new, better hero shooter founded on the same grounds to re-capture your fleeing audience and fleece them all over again! Now repeat ad infinitum and gain unlimited money. Congrats, you're now another Chinese game manufacturer that shits out products with no care for their fans or reputation but you get to go whaling every single day and fill your bathtub with money. You're ready to work for actual Blizzard now! You're welcome.

Ok but Voltron FFXIV AU that nobody but like 3 people will understand, but hear me out.
Shiro is a Paladin, of course, as if he could be anything else. Probably a Highlander. He started out with Keith and is the most earnest Tank you’ll ever meet, all dungeon and raid runs go super smooth (tho not neccesarily fast) and he adjusts flawlessly to the group’s pace. Not that he doesn’t get frustrated at times, but he is Good and Virtuous and also actually genuinely loves the GLD/PLD storyline and always picks the Good Guy WoL option. Career Tank, highly prefers the control and protection+healing support he can give as a Paladin. Especially useful when Keith is his leveling buddy and prone to charging in. The Raid Group Leader. The only one anyone trusts with Loot Master.
Absolutely the kind of Tank who pops {Cover} on Keith. Pre-pull. Will drop everything to {Clemency} you from death.
Also: passage of arms. Space Angel. Enough said.
Tumblr media
Other Jobs: N/A (but ok he probably leveled conjurer a little and unlocked Samurai and Monk? I feel like he’d love SAM questline.)
Keith is a Dragoon, broody, angsty,  driven, a loner, always there to save the day when you least expect it. He looks aloof, but he’s loyal. It helps that there’s {Blood for Blood} which ties in with the Berserker motif. Picks Miqo’te out of a misguided notion that they’d be faster. They are, in fact, not any faster than other races. Proves the loldrg meme by always charging forward with his jumps, but also usually the Exception that Proves the meme by being the last one standing/alive. Also, Shiro won’t let him die. Absolutely kills anything that touches Shiro. Which works out pretty well for them somehow. Usually top DPS, super attentive to Tank and actually uses enmity-decreasing cooldowns. If you have him in the party, mobs just melt to nothing and the runs go super fast. He has his opener and jump synced to perfection with Shiro’s opening pull.
12/10 the kind of DRG who tethers the tank {Dragonsight} and actually uses elusive jump correctly.
His favorite DRG skill is...maybe Blood of the Dragon. It’s just--- dragons are really cool ok guys, he insists.
Tumblr media
Other Jobs: DARK KNIGHT (he pairs up with Shiro anytime he can, flawless tank swaps, EDGELORD, absolutely walks around with The Edgelord Aura On), He tried to heal once to help support Shiro but Shiro talked him out of it. (It was AST and he basically fed Shiro all his 200% potency Boles and Balances).
Tumblr media
LOTOR. Oh boy. Lotor is Elezen, he’s probably a DUSKWIGHT Elezen to boot. Absolutely RED MAGE, it’s perfect for him- flashy, theatrical, refined and noble- constantly managing a balance of white and black.  And lured by the prospect of power. He definitely sympathized with the villain of the RDM questline. The kind of DPS who steals aggro from the tank if you let up even a little bit. Politely uses {Diversion} before it gets to him, but you know anyway. Can make your runs heaven or hell. He tends to be sparing with support skills unless truly needed, but will {veraise} and {manashift} the healer if they die and then call them an idiot. Constantly critiizes the political leaders of the city-states, the Syndicate, and 80% of the plot in general. Parses.
His favorite skill is LB3: Vermillion Scourge. The strongest black and white magic attack.  It’s beautifully flashy and powerful and gives him a strange sense of peace.  Secretly enjoys the rose effect on procced Impact.
Tumblr media
Other Jobs:  Black Mage. The kind of blackmage who {Aetherial Manipulations} to a partymate instead of running and refuses to move out of Leylines.
If there’s any other FFXIV VLD fans out there, let me know what you think! :’D
OTHERS:
Hunk- white mage- big beefy heals, sassy raise macros. Never lets you go below 50% health unless you’re Lance.
Pidge - SCH - calls carbuncle Rover, DPS heals, Eos is healer. Parses. The kind of healer who only heals when you’re at 1 HP.
Allura - SMN/AST - Pretty, but don’t get on her bad side. OP summons and individually named egi macros.
Lance - MCH/NIN - he’s 100% into the Cool aesthetic; glams the biggest guns and ninjaruns everywhere.
Matt - SAM (?) - absolutely weeb enough to do it, probably an omnicrafter.
Coran-  BRD. Guys. GUYS. He is 200% best support but also tends to run around the arena for no reason. Hums on voice chat and gives everyone LSS debuff.

PJO: the seven (and also nico and reyna) - overwatch mains
Percy - Reinhardt
fights for his friends. can’t aim worth shit but is master of shield. reyna can’t get enough of the fact that they have another tank main. he’s even the hero in overwatch because they’d never win without him.
Annabeth - Pharah
900 iq pharah player. 100% rocket accuracy. concussive blast environmental kills for days. thinks games are stupid but everyone begs her to play with them whenever they need to actually win.
Jason - Genji
asked reyna if there was a guy with a sword. freaked out when sword guy tuned out to also be a cyborg ninja. very very hit-or-miss. more of a straight-up fighter tbh, doesn’t really have the nuances of genji’s mobility figured out.
Piper - McCree
likes mccree’s aesthetic and has cowboy fantasies. not actually very good at him. annoyingly, nico rarely shows up to play so she’s their backup dps main. has considered becoming a support main but doesn’t want to make hazel feel less important.
Leo - Sombra
feels a certain kinship with the hispanic tech nerd character. likes the technical aspects of her kit. anyone who says sombra is underpowered hasn’t met leo. has definitely tried to build sombra’s tech irl.
Hazel - Mercy
doesn’t know what games are but wants to do what the others are doing. reyna teaches her the ropes of mercy because they need a healer. calmest member of the team. annabeth tries to get the pharmercy combo going sometimes but hazel’s usually too busy healing frank.
Frank - Hanzo
this pains me. frank is my fave and I don’t want to make him a hanzo main but it makes too much sense. he sees the guy with the bow and dragon motifs and goes “that’s my guy”. they call him headshot machine. always gets a pick in the first 20 seconds, justifying his existence as a hanzo main.
Nico - Soldier: 76
refuses to play reaper. has heard all the jokes. looked into the game’s lore and chose to main the character who directly opposes reaper. of course the son of the god of death plays a straight-up dps and is really good at it.
Reyna - Zarya
got everyone else into the game for “coordination and tactics training”. wants to protect her allies but also be tactical and murder people. plays the objective like a champ, gets mad when the others don’t.

Alesian Order: ESO Set Guide

Welcome to another installment of a segment where we dive into one Elder Scrolls Online’s many Sets, and explore what sort of Builds you can make. Not only will we show you how to get the most from these Sets, but we’ll explain where to get them, what requirements there are to obtain them (if any), and everything else you could possibly want to know about them. In this article we will take a look at the Alesian Order that increases Health Recovery based on your Resistances.
Tanking Set that can be useful
Introduction To Alessian Order
This set was added with Update 1: Craglorn which launched in May 2014. This addition to the base game featured the addition of the games first Trials in Hel Ra Citadel and Aetherian Archive. The Alessian Order set can be obtained from the Vlastarus Elite Gear Vendor in Cyrodiil. This Heavy Armor set comes in Aldmeri, Daggerfall and Ebonheart Motif Style. These motifs are tied to your chosen faction and can be found in chests in Cyrodiil and Imperial City. Only players belonging to that faction can find these, so players from other factions will need to purchase them from vendors or other players.
Weapon and Armor Traits are random, meaning you are likely going to have to farm pieces for different Traits. This is a Heavy Set so enchantments on Armor and Weapon pieces are Max Health and Absorb Health. Jewelry comes with the Healthy Trait and Health Recovery Enchantments. Keep in mind that you can use Transmutation to change Traits if you wish, however the Summerset expansion is needed to change Traits on Jewelry, along with 50 Transmute Crystals.
This set in Aldmeri Style
Alessian Order adds 2975 Physical/Spell Resistance and 1206 Max Health with 4 Legendary pieces equipped. The 5 piece bonus increases Health Recovery by 1% of your total Physical and Spell Resistance.
Resource Recovery
Health, Stamina and Magicka are all complimented with same named Recovery stat. This stat indicates how much of that particular resource you can regain over time. Recovery ticks every 2 seconds and the amount you recover is displayed in the character sheet. Base recovery (without anything that would increase it further) depends on your character’s level.
These Recovery stats can be increased in many ways. Note that increasing Max Health, Stamina and Magicka does not affect Recovery at all. Every Recovery stat has their own methods of how to increase it. It can be through Champion Skills, Sets, Abilities, Buffs, Traits…etc. Set Jewelry almost always comes with a Recovery stat Enchantment. Light Sets come with Magicka Recovery, Medium with Stamina, and Heavy with Health. The Invigorating Amor Trait increases Recovery for all 3 resources at once, though by a very low amount.
Health Recovery
Health Recovery is a stat that is more important for Tanks but it is rarely utilized in PvE Builds, and it can be more effective in PvP. Healing Done, Healing Taken, and Healing Received do not impact Health Recovery in any way. Minor and Major Defile, however, reduces Health Recovery by 15/30%.  The following are all the ways to increase Health Recovery:
Racial Passives: Khajiit have passive that increases Health Recovery by 100.
Sets: A number of sets, mostly Heavy ones, have Health Recovery that goes up to 129 at Legendary quality and CP 160. Some Sets take it further and focus almost exclusively on raising Health Recovery and restoring Health in some other ways. These sets are Willow’s Path, Beekeeper’s Gear, Orgnum’s Scales, Green Pact and Permafrost.
Glyph of Health Recovery: Jewelry Glyph that increases Health Recovery by 169 at most.
The Steed Mundus Stone: Increases Health Recovery by 363 if you have 7 Legendary Divine Traits.
Minor/Major Fortitude Buff: Minor increases Health Recovery by 10% while Major increases by 20%. This buff comes from abilities, passives and Health Potions.
Healthy Champion Skill: Increases Health Recovery by 15% while at highest level.
Stamina Recovery
Stamina Recovery is a stat that is most important for Stamina DPS roles. Most tanks have little use of it because Stamina Recovery is 0 when holding block, which they almost always are. In addition, you can regain Stamina by hitting an enemy with a fully-charged Heavy Attack when using any weapon besides Staves. Here are all the ways to increase Stamina Recovery:
Racial Passives: Khajiit, Bosmer and Redguard have passives that increases Stamina Recovery.
Sets: A number of sets, mostly Medium ones, have Stamina Recovery stat that goes up to 129 at Legendary quality and CP 160. Some Sets take it further and focus almost exclusively on raising Stamina Recovery and restoring Stamina in some other ways. These sets are Willow’s Path, Ulfnor’s Favor, Battlefield Acrobat, Bone Pirate’s Tatters, Hircine’s Veneer, Marksman’s Crest and Trappings of Invigoration.
Glyph of Stamina Recovery: Jewelry Glyph that increases Stamina Recovery by 169 at most.
The Serpent Mundus Stone: Increases Stamina Recovery by 363 at most if you have 7 Legendary Divine Traits.
Minor/Major Endurance Buff: Minor increases Stamina Recovery by 10% while Major increases by 20%. This buff comes from abilities, passives and Health Potions.
Mooncalf Champion Skill: Increases Stamina Recovery by 15% while at highest level.
Magicka Recovery
Magicka Recovery is a stat that is most important for Magicka DPS roles and some Tank builds. Besides Magicka Recovery you can recover Magicka by hitting an enemy with a fully-charged Heavy Attack when using Staves. Here are all the ways to increase Magicka Recovery:
Racial Passives: Breton and  Khajiit are the only Races that have a passive which increases Magicka Recovery.
Sets: A number of sets, mostly Light ones, have Magicka Recovery stat that goes up to 129 at Legendary quality and CP 160. Some sets take it further and focus almost exclusively on raising Magicka Recovery and restoring Magicka in some other ways. These sets are Arch-Mage, Bright-Throat’s Boast, Moondancer, Robes of Alteration Mastery, Shroud of the Lich and Vestments of the Warlock.
Glyph of Magicka Recovery: Jewelry Glyph that increases Magicka Recovery by 169 at most.
The Atronach Mundus Stone: Increases Magicka Recovery by 363 at most if you have 7 Legendary Divine Traits.
Minor/Major Intellect Buff: Minor increases Magicka Recovery by 10% while Major increases by 20%. This buff comes from abilities, passives and Health Potions.
Arcanist Champion Skill: Increases Magicka Recovery by 15% while at highest level.
What You Need To Know About This Set
How this set works is it calculates sum of Physical and Spell Resistance and adds 1% of that sum to your Health Recovery. That means this:
Physical Resistance 30k + Spell Resistance 30k = 60k = 600 Health Recovery
Physical Resistance 15k + Spell Resistance 15k = 30k = 300 Health Recovery
Physical Resistance 10k + Spell Resistance 15k = 25k = 250 Health Recovery
This Set on its own adds 2975 Physical and Spell Resistance which is nice defensive boost. Scaling is linear and there are no ways to increase it. By having more Resistances you can have more Health Recovery, and increases that go over the Resistance hard cap (33k) will add additional Health Recovery. So it can get up to almost 900 Health Recovery in extreme cases. Total Health Recovery bonus can be seen on the Set’s tooltip beneath the 5 piece set bonus.
Even Raid Bosses can have serious issues at times bringing you down with such high health recovery
These are the ways how to reach highest Resistance and Health Recovery numbers with this set:
By using Protective Trait on Jewelry and Defending on Weapon you can get around 13k total Resistance on a max level character which equals around 130 Health Recovery.
Jewelry already adds up to 169 Health Recovery per piece if it is part of Heavy Set.
Adding the Steed Mundus Stone with 7 Divines will also add around 360 Health Recovery.
High Resistance Sets like Mighty Chudan, Mark of the Pariah or Fortified Brass
Werewolf adds 10,000 Resistance to the player when in Werewolf form, which = 100 Health Recovery.
Notes for PvE Players
Alessian Order is a set purely for Tanks because they are the only ones that truly need Health Recovery, Max Health and Resistance bonuses. Hitting about 25k Physical and Spell Resistance should not be an issue at higher levels for a proper tank, which would mean 500 Health Recovery from the set, and that is not bad at all. The only issue is that Tanks require some Stamina bonuses, which this set does not provide. That is why the Tower Mundus Stone would be good choice instead of Steed to balance it all out.
Going overboard with Resistance can make you immortal in lots of situations but your group will suffer for it.
So how far can Health Recovery go with this set? I have used the following setup to get it as high as possible:
Beekeeper’s Set: 658 Health Recovery
Steed + 7 Divines: 360
Jewelry : 471
Protective and Defending Traits: around 130 for about 13k total resistance sum
Khajiit passive: 100 (seems to be the only class with Health Recovery on PTS during testing)
Major Fortitude buff from Potion: 20% increase
100 points into Healthy, Heavy Armor Focus and Spell Shield Champion Skills
Mighty Chudan Set: Adds on its own sum of over 16k resistance which means around 160 more Health Recovery
Dragonknight Class: 10% increased Health Recovery from Elder Dragon passive and additional 3300 Spell Resistance from Scaled Dragon passive
In total my resistance sum was around 87k which means 870 Health Recovery from Alessian Order. At its highest level it ended up around 4700 Health Recovery. That is quite a lot. If the buff from Troll King Monster Helm is active then Health Recovery goes up to around 6200 for 10 seconds. [What about werewolf?]
Troll King can make get health recovery over 6000 when active
These Health Recovery numbers are really high and will make your tank hard to kill, especially when you factor in healing. The problem is that in PvE you do not need such high Resistance so buffing it so much becomes detrimental to what tanks are all about, and Alessian Order is selfish set that provides no benefits to the team. That is why building around should not be about boosting Health Recovery to insane levels, but to have it at decent levels, while also providing support to your teammates. From monster helms I would pick one of these 3:
Lord Warden to increase resistance of whole party. It raises your resistance as well for 10 secs, meaning more health recovery when it is active (up to 76 more).
Vykosa to put Major Maim on an enemy for couple of seconds, reducing damage dealt by 30%.
Engine Guardian to add 129 Health Recovery and random resource restoration which helps a lot in keeping you alive.
There are many options for a second set. Depending on the class I would opt for those that can provide beneficial effects to the whole party or a direct support set. Something like Ebon Armory to provide more health to teammates, Akaviri Dragonguard to reduce Ultimate cost, Champion of the Hist to get more stamina and permanent Minor Heroism, newly added Mighty Glacier that provides teammates with Major Ward and Resolve upon hitting an enemy with a Snare or Immobilization ability, Automated Defense that provides teammates with Major Aegis when Ultimate is used… and there are many more sets that would fit nicely.
Notes for PvP Players
Health Recovery is a better stat in PvP than in PvE due to healing and damage being halved, characters with high Recovery and good defense can survive for long periods of time. Going over the Resistance cap is not uncommon in PvP because DPS roles have a high amount of Physical or Spell Penetration. That plays right into the hands of Alessian Order set because more Resistance equals more Health Recovery.
However, Health Recovery is now countered by the Defile debuff, which is something you need to be aware off. It is commonly used in PvP so having high Health Recovery does not mean you are automatically really hard to kill. Damage Shields and debuff removal abilities are good to have in that case.
This set relegates you into Tank role in PvP as well with goal of harassing enemies and drawing fire, basically keeping enemy attention on yourself when possible. Troll King is the best choice for a Monster Set, but only if you have a means of healing yourself to proc it. Permafrost works great as well since it increases recovery by 885 when a Damage Shield is active. Fasalla’s Guile puts Minor Defile on all nearby enemies, making it great debuffing choice for PvP players.
Werewolf players gain an additional 10,000 Resistance on top of what you already have, so you will gain an additional 100 Health Recovery when transformed. This means you can reach staggering Health Recovery and have 40k + Resistances as a Werewolf, making you virtually invincible if you can cleanse Defiling effects.
Final Verdict
Alessian Order is set with good tanking bonuses, and pretty much everything you would want except Stamina bonus. It provides a good amount of Health Recovery that comes from an already useful Resistance stat. That makes it one of the best Health Recovery sets in the game. You essentially get the same Health Recovery as Beekeeper if you are setup for tanking, but with an extra 2975 to your Resistances.
Using the Tower Mundus Stone solves the problem of the no Max Stamina set bonus. Going full on Health Recovery is never worth it so the quality of such set is best shown in how much it can offer in a realistic build scenario. At max level with Heavy Armor equipped and no further bonuses to Resistance, you get around 14-17k Spell and Physical Resistance which is already 280-340 Health Recovery without needing to optimize anything. The set bonus provides an additional 3k Physical and Spell Resistance which you need anyway for end game content. From 25k to 30k is good enough for PvE. So equipping support sets next to this selfish one is the way to go for PvE. With a realistic setup such as Battalion Defender – Alessian Order – Engine Guardian you can still achieve over 2k Health Recovery easily without wasting Champion Points and having to go over the resistance cap.
Decent set overall but best used with proper tank build than going for insanely high health recovery
Taking that all into consideration, it  still does not make this set a great choice, but rather a decent one because being one shot in PvE is quite normal if you miss a Block, and that is where Health Recovery won’t have any effect (Resistance bonuses from this set might, although only slightly).
In PvP this set is will be used by niche players who try to make “Immortal” Builds, due to the high amount of  Health Recovery you can obtain, combined with the fact you can go over the 33100 cap because of Penetration. There are more options to play with here since getting one shot is highly unlikely, especially with decent defenses added on top of Health Recovery.
Overall Alessian Order is a decent choice for PvE because of the Resistance and Health Recovery correlation, and decent set for PvP when built around it. So this set will be used in game most definitely, although not as frequently anymore because of Health Recovery nerf to Racial Passives. Only Khajiit can have up to 100 Health Recovery from their passives at the time of testing this.

Glorious Defender: ESO Set Guide – Experimental Evasion
The post Glorious Defender: ESO Set Guide – Experimental Evasion appeared first on Fextralife.
In this article we will take a look at Glorious Defender Set which, when it procs, grants 100% Dodge chance against the next attack.
Strange Set that does not make much sense
Introduction To Glorious Defender Set
This set was added with Orsinium Expansion that launched in November 2015. It added a lot of new content, including 18 new Sets, and Maelstrom Arena. The Glorious Defender Set drops from normal and veteran Maelstrom Arena, and each set item is bind on pickup, meaning you will have to run the Arena to obtain it. Set items come in the Trinimac Motif Style. This motif can be found by completing daily world bosses and delve quests in Wrothgar.
Weapon and Armor Traits are random, meaning you are likely to have to farm pieces for different Traits. It is a Heavy Set so enchantments on Armor and Weapon pieces are Max Health and Absorb Health. Jewelry comes with Healthy Traits and Health Recovery Enchantments. Keep in mind that you can use Transmutation to change Traits if you wish, however the Summerset expansion is needed to change Traits on Jewelry, along with 50 Transmute Crystals.
How this set looks like
Glorious Defender increases Max Health by 2412 and Weapon Damage by 129 with 4 pieces equipped. The 5 piece set bonus grants a 9% chance to get 100% Dodge chance vs. the next attack. It is a set that can be used by almost everyone, but likely won’t see much use do to the extremely low proc chance.
Proc Sets and How They Work
Proc Sets, or Sets that have “chance to apply some effect” called “Proccing” are becoming more popular in ESO and seemingly added every major Update (Proc is short for: Programmed Random OCcurrence). When the conditions of the Proc Set are met the effect will trigger. However, not all Proc Sets work the same way, and some apply buffs that remain on you whether you continue to wear the Set or not. Learning how to use Proc Sets effectively is extremely important for min/maxing, especially in PvP.
An important thing to note is that Proc Sets can no longer Critically Strike or Critically Heal as of Update 13 (Homestead) so as to reduce their effectiveness in Cyrodiil. In addition, many Proc Sets have cooldowns to keep them from being abused. When choosing a Proc Set to use, if you’re so inclined, you want to not only look at the effect, but how often you can apply it. Finding Sets with little or no cooldown is ideal, because it allows you to trigger them frequently. Glorious Defender has no cooldown, which is ideal.
Two examples of “Proc Sets”. You can see that Wizard’s Riposte has no cooldown, so can be reapplied and applied to many people at once, making it extremely useful.
What You Need To Know About This Set
How this set works is whenever you hit an enemy with Light or Heavy Attack, there is 9% chance Glorious Defender buff will be granted, and this buff lasts for about 9 secs. The timer resets if the Glorious Defender buff procs again without the previous one being used. When the buff is active you will Dodge the next attack, and most attacks can be dodged this way. There is a subtle animation that shows when you Dodge, and it is illustrated by your character leaning back.
How Dodge from Glorious Defender looks like
Upon testing, this Set seems to proc sometimes almost all the time, but afterwards it seems like it can’t proc at all. It is definitely RNG-based, so it is not reliable Dodge, unlike Dodge Roll which you can controlled at the costs Stamina. So it’s a trade off of sorts.
Most DPS rotations require the use of Light and Heavy Attacks, and that is where this set comes in. It can boost surviveability and it can trigger 5 piece set bonus from Nocturnal’s Favor and Tava’s Favor. The Dodge from this Set counts as a successful Dodge Roll, and that is why it can trigger bonuses from these sets. Glorious Defender is currently the only way to achieve this passive Dodge chance, as Major Evasion has been changed so that it reduces damage from AoE attacks by 25% instead.
I tried some testing with a Two Handed Weapon, Lightning Staff and Werewolf Transformation to see if it increased the chances of triggering the Glorious Defender buff when doing splash damage with Heavy Attacks. However, there was no noticeable increase, though it is hard to quantify that since it is RNG based. In testing the proc chance for both heavy splash attack versus multiple enemies, and light attack versus only 1 enemy, I found it to be about 20%. Though I noticed no difference between the two, the proc chance seems to be way higher then what the tooltip suggests.
Notes for PvE Players
This set is almost impossible to find in PvE, as it should be used by DPS roles, but if you equip it then you lose a lot damage wise. Survivability is increased that way, but that is not something you want to be focusing on unless you are a new player. By equipping Tava’s Favor with Glorious Defender you will generate 9 ultimate over 3 seconds when you Dodge this way, which is quite a good boost to Ultimate gain. Blood Spawn and Balorgh monster helms would be  a really good addition for such a build.
Blood Spawn has 6% chance to give 14 Ultimate points and increase Resistances when taking damage. It would be more for solo play because focus won’t be on you as DPS in group content. Balorgh is interesting in this combination for both solo and group play because it gives a buff that lasts for 10 secs which increases Weapon and Spell Damage equal to double of the amount of Ultimate consumed.
Werewolves are primary candidates for this set due to having slightly faster Light Attacks, which are core of their DPS. Equipping something like Blood Moon can increase the speed even further due to Frenzy buff, making Glorious Defender effective at all times because hitting more often means more chances of proccing. Adding Selene monster helm on top of that would add significantly more to overall DPS because it does high instant damage and has low cooldown of 4 secs.
Overall, this set will find more use in Solo content than in Group play. If it was triggered by receiving and not doing damage then it would work great on Tanks, but it is not the case. Equipping only Rings and Weapons from Glorious Defender items would be most beneficial to get bonuses from Medium Armor Skill line. The same skill line also has the Shuffle ability that grants Major Evasion, which reduces damage from AoE attacks by 25%.
Notes for PvP Players
Glorious Defender is decent for PvP. Dodge is valuable in such an environment since it can save you from powerful attacks. It is not reliable, but when it procs it is oh so satisfying seeing other players miss with attacks that would otherwise hurt a lot, and it can save you from certain death with a bit of luck. However, to make it effective, you still need to hit enemies a lot with Light or Heavy Attacks. Consider pairing it with other Sets that boost the effectiveness of your Light and Heavy attacks, or combining that with Meridia’s Blessed Armor can be quite powerful. By making enemies blind they will miss every attack for 5 secs. While very good for PvP this Meridia’s Blessed Armor has no use in PvE because most bosses can’t be blinded.
Meridia’s Blessed Armor be nice addition to Glorious Defender
Final Verdict
Glorious Defender is an interesting set that makes almost no sense. It increases surviveability, but at the same time can be used somewhat effectively only in DPS builds. You are trading a lot of DPS for a random chance of getting a Dodge, and it isn’t a very good trade off. That is why in PvE it will almost never be used, unless playing solo, where you need surviveability. When you are the tank, DPS and healer, like in Maelstrom Arena, then this Set may come in handy.
Due to fast Light Attack speed, Werewolves are perfect choice for this set
While less effective in PvE, it is quite the opposite in PvP where it has its uses in annoying other players, and saving you from potentially devastating attacks. Make sure your rotation uses Light Attacks in order to get the most from this Set. Consider playing as a Werewolf to get faster Light Attacks, increasing your procc frequency.
Stay tuned as I’ll be covering the rest of the ESO Sets, and be sure to check out our other ESO Guides!

Thews of the Harbringer: ESO Set Guide – Rebounding Blows
The post Thews of the Harbringer: ESO Set Guide – Rebounding Blows appeared first on Fextralife.
In this article we take a look at Thews of the Harbringer which damages enemy while Blocking.
Tanking Set with interesting 5 piece set bonus
Introduction To Thews of the Harbringer Set
This set was introduced to Elder Scrolls Online in August and September of 2015 with the addition of the Imperial City DLC. It is purchased from the Tel-Var Vendor in the Imperial City and is bind on equip.  You can acquire Heavy Armor, weapons and jewelry of this Set, and they are in the Xivkyn Motif style. This Style is divided into several motif book chapters and all of them can be found in Trophy Vaults.
Weapon and Armor Traits are random, meaning you are likely to have to farm pieces for different Traits. This is a Heavy Set so enchantments on Armor and Weapon pieces are Max Health and Absorb Health. Jewelry comes with Healthy Traits and Health Recovery Enchantments. Keep in mind that you can use Transmutation to change Traits if you wish, however the Summerset expansion is needed to change Jewelry Traits, along with 50 Transmute Crystals.
Thews of the Harbringer increases Max Health by 2412 and Max Stamina by 1096 with 4 pieces equipped. The 5 piece set bonus deals damage to attackers whenever you Block direct damage. This set is meant for Tanks due to its bonuses which increase Health and Stamina, while the 5 piece set bonus could only be effective when continuously Blocking.
Reducing Your Block Cost
If you are a player focusing primarily on PvE, the first thing you’re going to want to do when using Trappings of Invigoration is reduce your Block Cost since you will need to Block a lot in order to make full use of this Set. The cost of Blocking is 1730 Stamina every .25 seconds currently (assuming you are being hit) and you will need to reduce that number significantly or you will not be able to Block more than a couple of seconds tops. Luckily there are many ways to do this.
For PvE players (tanks) you’ll want to have the Sturdy Trait on just about every piece of Armor you can, and since this Set is crafted, that will be extremely easy to do. PvP players will want Impenetrable, or else they will die quickly from Critical Damage, and they do not need to Block as often.
Secondly PvE players will want to invest heavily into the Shadow Ward star of The Shadow Champion Tree. There is no hard and fast rule here as to just how much you need to invest, but it is not difficult to get -20% Block Cost reduction from this star. PvE  players will also want to have the passive skill: Fortress  in the One-Handed and Shield Skill Line. Maxed out, it will reduce your Block Cost by 36% when you have a Shield equipped.
You get nearly 20% around 50 points into this star, so it’s worth doing. Maximum reduction is 25% for 100 points invested.
Finally, and most importantly, PvE players should put Glyph of Shielding on your Jewelry. If you play around with Blocking at all, you’ll find there is no way to make it sustainable without them. You don’t need to put them on all your Jewelry, but at least 1 or 2. It isn’t necessary to go for a “perma-block” build, but you will need to reduce Block Cost significantly for this Build to work. However, blocking effectiveness got nerfed in Dragon Bones DLC. With all factors affecting Block cost maximized it would cost around 250 Stamina more per block after the patch, which is quite a significant increase. For more information on Blocking please see this video.
What You Need To Know About This Set
How this set works is whenever you block a direct damage attack, the enemy will take damage equal to 4% of your current Health. The Health in question is your current Health, not your Maximum Health. If your Health starts going down, damage done from this set will be lessened proportionally. So the two goals are: 1) have Max Health as high as possible, and 2) to have it close to that value at all times to maximize damage done from this set.
Whenever an attack is blocked, enemies will take damage
Although the tooltip says its 4% of current health, that is all before applying bonuses from Mighty, Master-at-Arms and Piercing. Damage reflected is considered direct Physical Damage and benefits from all those champion skills. With 100 points into Mighty and Master-at-Arms, 51 points into Piercing and total of 58.2k Health, damage done per block was roughly 3k. The great thing about this set is that it does not have a cooldown of any kind, meaning you are not restricted in doing damage in any way. So against groups of enemies it is very useful because everyone that is attacking you will take damage. Note that damage cannot crit because it comes from a set, but damage from this set procs bonuses from other sets that have requirement of dealing damage. Selene, for example.
Notes for PvE Players
This set can be used in PvE if optimized and for certain builds only and the only ones that could use it are Tanks. I also see this set used mostly in solo play because the damage dealt in Dungeons is so low that it’s not worth it.
This set can be used in some solo play builds but is overall underwhelming
This set also has one glaring issue: to get to highest possible damage you need huge Max Health. The problem is that in order to deal damage you need to block, which requires Stamina. So if you are going for highest damage output then you are limiting the amount you can block, and vice versa. That means choosing between Health or Stamina, Sturdy or Divines, The Tower or The Lord. It depends on what kind of build you want to run. You lose in one aspect no matter what you go for.
Templars, for example, can be great with high max health setup due to Blazing Shield ability and Puncturing Sweep to add damage and heals in between blocks. Blazing Shield provides damage shield equal to 30% of your Max Health, which in case of having high Max Health becomes massive. In solo play this build can out-sustain any boss.
The 2 Sets that works best with Thews of the Harbringer are Plague Doctor and Warrior-Poet. Plague Doctor adds roughly 6k Max Health, which is massive, and Warrior-Poet can add the same or more depending on your setup. Also adding Selene Monster Helm can provide a significant DPS boost because it procs from damage done from the set. It also scales with same Champion Skills that are used to increase Thews of the Harbringer damage.
Notes for PvP Players
This set won’t find much use in PvP simply because the damage done is reduced by 50%. So even if you go for a build that would do around 3k damage per block, in PvP that damage would be only 1.5k which is simply too low. In addition, you will not be at Max Health often, which means that number will be lowered yet still. The upside is that you can proc other sets from doing that damage, like Selene’s.
If you’re going to use this set in PvP, which I advise against, then you will need a way to sustain Blocking and Health, so consider adding something like Crest of Cyrodiil or Battalion Defender in order to keep you Health topped off while you Block. This will ensure maximum damage is returned, and that you don’t need to lower your Block. Remember that you can cast spells and Block at the same time, potentially making this set viable if you can sustain it.
Final Verdict
Thews of the Harbringer is a set that won’t see much use in any environment. The damage from it is too low to justify it in group content or PvP, so the only real usage is in solo play. Upsides are no cooldown and that it procs other sets, and that is the only reason why it would be ok choice in solo play. The damage of this Set would have to be roughly doubled or even 2.5xed for it to make much sense to use it with regularity.
Blocking many enemies at once and seeing them take damage is quite satisfying
This set is one of the weaker ones that can be used in niche builds which would’t work in any competitive environment. It’s for solo play to change things up a bit and try something else.
Stay tuned as I’ll be covering the rest of the ESO Sets, and be sure to check out our other ESO Guides!
