A Wisconsin Decorative Arts Feathursday
This week we present some decorative avian motifs form the 1948 portfolio Decorative Art in Wisconsin by Anne Kendall Foote (1910-1986) and Elaine A. G. Smedal (1922-2014), published in Madison, Wisconsin by Screen Art Company. The portfolio is a follow-up to the authors' 1946 portfolio Norwegian Design in Wisconsin, and was funded by a grant from the University of Wisconsin's Committee on the Study of American Civilization. The portfolio includes 15 original silk-screened prints with photographs and descriptions of the artifacts that the designs are drawn from.
We were delighted that bird images were included, and particularly delighted that some of them were . . . CHICKENS!!

The only new familiar I will accept is Dennis/Denise of Wisconsin. Also I think it's what will annoy memo most: someone who got to road trip with Nandor and is gother than he ever was.
(ID in alt and under cut)
ID: 1a. Nandor sitting for a talking head, arms crossed and head tossed imperiously as he says "No, I do not miss Guillermo. I have a new waaay better and more loyal familiar now." 1b. Nandor leans back and holds up a hand, revealing a goth teenager standing behind him with short black hair, black eyeliner and lipstick, white foundation, a black leather trenchcoat, and a siouxie and the banshees tee shirt. They are dragging a large bloody body bag in one hand and are staring directly at the viewer. Nandor grins and announces, "Behold! My dear friend from Wisconsin..." 1c. Nandor continues, "...Dennis! Or was it Denise?" Nandor frowns and holds one hand thoughtfully to his chin. In the background, Dennis or Denise pulls up the bloody bag with a squelching noise, still staring directly in-camera.
2. Laszlo and Nadja sitting on a couch together doing a talking head, matching in purple and gray outfits. Nadja has one hand balled into a fist on her lap and the other on Laszlo's thigh as she snarls, "Nandor's new familiar is a creepy little shit." Laszlo, one arm stretched out on the back of the couch behind his wife, silently nods in agreement.
3a. Laszlo walking down the hall, dabbing casually at a bloodstain on his chin with a handkerchief. He calls over his shoulder, "Nandor! Tell your familiar there's a mess in the-" 3b. Laszlo shouts suddenly, "Fucking hell!" and jumps out of his skin, dropping the handkerchief, as he passes a doorway and finds Dennis or Denise standing there two inches from his face. They are facing the camera directly and only move their dark eyes to the side to look at Laszlo.
4a. Dennis or Denise is in the foreground, dusting something offscreen. Colin Robinson steps up behind them with one hand in his pocket and the other up in a wave, eyes already glowing in preparation of a meal. He starts, "Oh, hey! You know, the popularization of trenchcoats in counterculture actually originated with black oilcloth dusters..." 4b. Dennis or Denise continues to dust as Colin goes on, "commonly misattributed tooooohhhh...what in Sam Hill..." Colin falters and stumbles in place with a confused frown, holding his head as if it suddenly aches. A green arrow labeled "energy" shoots down next to him and a purple miasma surrounds his head. /end ID
