Bond sat down on his rumpled bed and lost himself in drink and gloomy reflections.

John Le Carré [was] not just as a serial adulterer but a chilly manipulator who, one lover wrote, “goes around being other people’s missing halves . . . then slips away”. Shakespeare’s [Ian] Fleming, though, emerges as “capable of being sympathetic, funny, vital, humane”. A former mistress met him before he died (at 56, in 1964) and readily recalled “the good, fine, courageous and generous things in his character”. [...] Soon, though, [Ian Fleming] fell properly in love, with a bright and “headstrong” Swiss girl, Monique Panchaud de Bottens. Fleming’s ever-dominating mother Eve forbade the match. Fleming’s lawyer chum Ernie Cuneo detected in James Bond’s philandering “Ian’s revenge for the terrible hurt”. A playboy with a puritanical streak, Fleming found his métier as a Reuters reporter. There he learnt to file “neat and correct and concise and vivid” copy and, at a 1933 Moscow show-trial, witnessed ruthless power games from a ringside seat. Soon, he forsook journalism for the easier money of banking and broking, and ran through high-society girlfriends with a “cut-and-run” insouciance. Mary Pakenham, an enduring friend, concurs with other voices when she detects in Ian not bristling machismo but a “somewhat feminine temperament”. Noël Coward, later a Fleming soulmate, was cruder: “Ian, darling. You’re just a beautiful bitch.”

60 years ago, Ian Fleming December 17, 1963, London Heathrow airport, British author of the James Bond novels Ian Fleming (1908-1964) checking out an early copie of his latest book “On Her Majesty Secret Service”. Fleming was on his way to “Golden Eye” , his winter retreat bungalow in Oracabessa at the North coast of Jamaica. Unfortunately, it proved to be the last winter vacation enjoying the Caribbean Sea but a stay during which Fleming meet American ornithologist James Bond (1900-1989) author of “Birds of the West Indies”. Fleming was a keen bird watches and owned a 1947 copie of the book, using the author’s Anglo-Saxon name for the hero of his successful spy novels. Fleming offered the ornithologist a copie of “You Only Live Twice”, writing on cover page "To the real James Bond from the thief of his identity. Ian Fleming, Feb 5, 1964 (a great day)." 1963 had been a busy year for Fleming, as the novels became movies he had visited the “From Russia With Love” film set in Istanbul and enjoyed the premiere of this 2nd Bond movie in October 1963. Back in England by spring 1964, Fleming spent his last days enjoying golf & the country side in Kent. Note Fleming wore his Rolex Explorer 1016 wrist watch on a 7206 steel bracelet. The Rolex Explorer was the watch Fleming described in the James Bond novels and after his death, the watch resurfaced in 1981. During the “Fleming 100th anniversary” exhibition, this Rolex Explorer 1016, case number 596851 was on display at the Imperial War Museum from May 2008 to March 2009. (Photo: AP)

And the Watcher does bless people! Happy 30th to me! I'm expecting the next arrow in my husband's quiver rather than grovelling to the copros who want us microchipped, mutilated and sterile, slaving away as CAREER WOMEN

The Sea Bird is a massive floating community built for the booming South Sea tourism industry, currently in its third decade of service. Initially planned as a large, but much more typical floating casino-cruise ship, the size and design became excessively large and more flamboyant over its decade of development as obscene amounts of money were poured into the project by a never ending flow of investors desperate to cash in on the innovative behemoth.
At launch it could hold 7,258 passengers and 2,112 crew while staying at sea for four months at a time without outside support. About a decade into service, the utilities and fittings were updated, living-areas expanded, and its propulsion system dramatically upgraded. Today almost 10,000 passengers board the bird, where they are presented with a never-ending cavalcade of entertainment and dining options, lavish accommodations, and an experience specifically tailored for comfort and relaxation.
Though faced with enormous construction costs and daily expenses, the Sea Bird has proven extremely popular amongst the upper class and rarely sails with an empty suite, making it one of the more profitable floating cities on the south sea route.
