Bloom: The Thesis

So, I decided to go ahead with the thesis, if you like it I might make more for other characters.

This will just essentially be a little insight into my thought process when it came to Bloom’s character, a few of my notes from my character sheet and discussing the things I added/removed from her character in my rewrite and why I did so.

Hope you enjoy it!

First Things First

The first words I wrote on Bloom’s character sheet as a bit of a paraphrase for what I felt like she was were ‘Next-door kind of protagonist’ which is definetely what she was meant to be in the original series.

Bloom’s main character traits at the very beginning of the rewrite would be: anger, loneliness and curiosity.

In the very first chapter, she’s just broken up with her boyfriend, got into a huge fight with her best friend and we see her be bullied. Bloom’s always been bullied and has only ever had few friends. She feels like she doesn’t quite fit in, doesn’t quite belong.

Her anger plays into this. Bloom’s anger issues are partially due to the Dragon Flame being under a magic block and trying to get out. But, in general, at the beginning of the rewrite, Bloom is a bit of an angry person.

This is something we saw in the OG, we see that Bloom is a bit of a hot-head and can make rash decisions, I loved that about Bloom in the first few seasons, I felt it was a good flaw to give our protagonist, so I chose to carry that over.

Bloom’s anger sets up certain conflicts, mainly her losing control and accidentally burning her friends. That is the main consequence of her anger in this rewrite, losing control, which plays into her feeling like she is way too behind compared to her classmates. The anger also converts into eventual guilt over certain things.

Finally, curiosity. I have no idea why in the OG they just… dropped Bloom’s love for drawing and fairies after like 5 episodes. Why? I feel like after season 2 there was truly no hobby or interest that truly set Bloom apart from the others.

I took the drawing from the OG and added a love for mythology and history in general.

I think making Bloom a bit of a nerd just really helps her character and also makes it so that she isn’t always confused by what’s going on since she does her research, especially about Domino (in season 2 she already knows a bit about Darkar and in general about Domino’s culture). It also gives her something that is very distinguishable and just gives her personality.

I gave her quite a bit of struggle in season 1 when it came to adjusting to Alfea, she instantly excels in History but struggles with the rest and, up til season 3 continues to despise Potions. I did this to round up her character and help make her abruptly joining Alfea more realistic.

Her main traits towards the end of season 1 and going forwards would be: loyalty, bravery and curiosity.

Her loneliness is replaced by loyalty. She has found an amazing group of friends and she is not going to lose them and will do everything in her power to protect them. And tbh, after what they go through in season 1 (and in the later seasons) can you blame her?

Her anger bleeds into her bravery. We see her nearly beat Icy to death in the last fight of season 1 and we see that her anger bleeds into guilt over not believing in her birth parents and feeling like Daphne shouldn’t have died to save her. Her anger is still prominent even after she has gotten better with it.

Part of her bravery comes from necessity, but it is still a very big part of her person.

And finally… curiosity. That’s what doesn’t change. I think it is her defining trait.

Thoughts Behind her Main Relationships

Stella: Stella is her person. From the moment they meet, they just click. I’m not even all that sure how to describe their relationship they’re just… the closest and the best.

One thing I added was the whole Taylor Swift invisible string aspect to their friendship. Their parents were best friends, their mothers were so close Luna believes she might’ve been a better mom if Marion had been around to advise her. And Stella is the one that finds Bloom on Earth and unknowingly brings her to where she would’ve ended up if Domino hadn’t fallen.

Bloom and Stella are very supportive of one another and the emotional support is very much not one-sided, they both are always there for the other.

They were always going to be friends. Bloom looks up to Stella due to her confidence and her dedication to her future as queen. Stella adores Bloom’s passion and how unapologetic she is when it comes to what has made her ‘the other’ throughout her life. They are each other’s person. And they always will be.

Their friendship is just one of intertwined souls. Their friendship is; Oh, I never knew I was looking for you but the second I met you it was like a puzzle piece falling into place and I know that I’d find you in any universe. Their friendship is an invisible string. It was always going to happen.

Sky: They are a friends to lovers situation. From the moment they meet they are quite soft with each other and I think it took them a second to develop a crush but it happened quite organically, nothing dramatic just being like ‘huh, everytime I see you I like you more and more and I’d like to get to know you even better’.

They start dating and take things slow, again, things between them are very normal and organic up until the switcharoo reveal where Bloom is obviously hurt due to being lied to, Sky apologizes, gives her her space and they decide to just stay as friends and leave it at that… but of course there are still feelings there.

So they stay friends for a while, but, since they are on good terms the feelings only get stronger and then they get together again and from there, they’re pretty strong as a couple.

I think the main problem they have is that they’re both stubborn and can both get angry easily (this gets better overtime but those cause a few issues in season 2).

But they are both incredibly loyal people and Sky sticks by Bloom side even when she’s being affected by Darkar.

Right now they’re… in a rocky place since, while Bloom does want to support him and makes sure he is okay, the fact that she made it very clear whose side she’d be on if it came down to it… that did hurt their relationship and they’re in a very unclear space at the moment and it might take time for them to be able to heal from that.

I feel like Sky and Bloom’s relationship is a tragedy, but like, a tragedy because of the narration ya know? Like there are these two kids who for all intents and purposes would’ve known each other their whole lives if Domino hadn’t fallen. Who care about each other so much and just want to be there for each other but have also hurt each other (for Sky, it’s his bloodline that hurt Bloom, for Bloom, it’s the very loyalty that Sky loves that winds up hurting him when Bloom choses a side).

Their tragedy is one of; I love you so much but the universe keeps fucking us over and revealing things that make me wonder if we truly can love each other and be together without another wave of hurt falling upon us.

Their love of each other is pure, it’s just a question of whether or not it can survive all the bullshit the universe keeps throwing at them.

Timmy: So, Bloom’s friendship with Timmy kinda came out of the blue and almost smacked me across the face as I was writing the beginning of a scene. In season 1, during the chapter with Tecna’s birthday I just kinda realized that Bloom and Timmy would totally be besties and just ran with it.

They are both very nerdy and get very invested in their interests so they’d totally listen to each other rant even if they don’t always get the others obsession. They can both be a little insecure but when they’re together that just fades away.

They just really bring out each others goofy sides and are not afraid to be weird with one another and that just really helps them click.

Their friendship is one of ‘others’ finding comfort in their ‘otherness’.

Their friendship is; you may be weird but you’re my favorite kind of weird. And I may make fun of you but I’ll never laugh at you, only with you. It’s, let’s be weird and unapologetic and free and happy because I found someone that may not share my interests but even better, they share my enthusiasm and they get me.

Who is Bloom in this Rewrite?

To me, Bloom is someone still trying to find their place. She’s a little stuck between being an Earth girl and a fairy. Between being a Winx and the lost princess from Domino. Between being a heroine and just a girl that wants to nerd out about mythology.

She’s a little unsure about what she wants to do. She has the general idea that she wants to do something regarding history or mythology but, unlike most of her friends, she doesn’t really have anything concrete.

She’s just doing her best to explore options.

On the other hand, she’s a warrior. Not by choice, but because she has to be.

Season 4 will be dealing with A LOT of imposter syndrome.

Because, in my rewrite, Bloom wasn’t born with powers or the Dragon Flame. She was born powerless. Daphne gave her the Dragon Flame and part of her magic before sending her to Earth.

Bloom wasn’t supposed to be a fighter. She never wanted to be a fighter.

The main difference between Daphne and Bloom is that Daphne ALWAYS wanted to be a queen and a warrior. She chose to be a Guardian fairy and a Nymph aside from being a princess. It may have weighed on her from time to time but she loved it.

Bloom… Bloom never wanted this. She’s a good fighter and she gets better because at this point she knows that to be the Guardian of the Dragon Flame is to be a warrior whether you like it or not.

Bloom is a girl who just wants to keep her friends safe and who feels guilty about a lot of things that are not really her responsibility but still feel like it.

Bloom is a girl who, if she’d have it her way, would just be a next-door kinda girl, nerding out about mythology and hanging out with her best friends. But things don’t go her way.

They rarely do.

do they all suffer from same face syndrome now? yes, especially the guys. did i end up white/skinny washing all of them? yeah a little. is it funny? in a kind of depressing way yes. literally only ruth kept her melanin because her parents aren’t any cannon characters, everybody else is a direct 50/50 of their parents’ skin tones

this experiment did make me realize i design a lot of outfits with a seam or detail across the breast/collar bone tho! so thats good to be aware of i guess???

Alfea Overview v2

i drew out a layout for Alfea i will use for specifications of my overview. did i make alfea a smidge taller? Yes but oh well, anyway lets begin.

The Alfea College for Fairies is a girls' boarding school in Magix for Fairies and the oldest (established 9000 years before the start of the story) and most prestigious educational institution for fairies.

The education in Alfea lasts 3 years, one for each Fairy Form in the journey of an aspiring full-fledged fairy. Base form, Charmix, Enchantix.

The Alfea students are mostly in training ages 16-18 (unless they have been held back a grade like Stella, so in her case, 17). Fairies here learn how to control their power, fight evil, learn new spells as well as learn how to be their realms' queens and guardian fairies. In this way, Alfea is a little like a military boarding school for the elites.

In the Past

The Alfea Champions were an ancient trio of legendary fairies who were believed to be the most powerful fairies in all of Alfea History. Their feats have been known to be passed down through generations, immortalised in statues that stand in the Alfea Museum, and had been recorded in Legendarium. Ress of the Flame, Chevonne of the Water and Farcelia of the Wind. They were real fairies, but it has been so long that their legends outlived their actual story of their lives.

When Mavilla was headmistress of Alfea, owning and exhibiting the strengths of one's Fairy Animal was considered a vital part of a fairy education. Everything taught was a reflection of the contents of the Tome of Nature. Eventually, Mavilla changed this.

Alfea used to have a crest which was a curved golden "A" on a purple and blue flower with a golden outline at the top of the school gates, just above Alfea's gate. The "A" of the crest is also seen on what used to be the school's uniform, consisting of a burgundy long-sleeved and knee-length dress and mary janes. The neck part of the dress has white lace and a dark burgundy loop.

At another point in time, Eldora was the keeper of the Alfea Greenhouse and taught floral magic.

School years

First Year

Freshmen fairies learn how to master their own source of power, as well as their base fairy form, and learn basic spells they can use in their daily life and in battle if necessary. Metamorphosymbiosis, Potionology and Survival Training are part of the first year curriculum. Fairies also learn how to explore diverse environments in the Simulation Room as part of their survival training.

Second Year

Second Year fairies have the goal of earning Charmix. Their classes include, magic invocation, magic self-defence, applied convergence and cognitive analysis class, where fairies learn technical incantations, and spells requiring accurate pronunciation.

Third Year

Third Year Classes include, History of Magic, and those who achieve Enchantix will participate in Battle training to hone their skills. The fairies also have a final thesis, also earning Enchantix is more like an extra credit thing.

Graduation

After earning Enchantix, the basic fairy education is completed and they will graduate with Honours and receive the titles of Guardian Fairies of their respective homeworlds on the Day of the Gift. Without Enchantix, the girls still graduate, but they don't become guardian fairies. In this case, they return to their home world and can decide if they want to work towards being a guardian fairy by being an apprentice to one until they earn their Enchantix, or they can do something else. Alumni can also decide to extend their studies and do their masters here at Alfea in any Subject already offered, being mentored by any of the current staff

Winx After Graduation

They taught for a short period of time, before choosing to take their masters here in various subjects in addition to being substitute teachers from time to time.

Architecture and Layout

Outside

The Alfea Natural Park, which is a refuge for Fairy Animals, is found in the forest. It is unknown if parts of the forest close to the school belong to the school or not, but they are also used for classes and tests.

There is a bus stop where students, guests, and staff members can take buses from and to Magix City and to other places in Magix.

Protective barriers meant to keep non-magical creatures, non-fairies, and bad weather out are seen many times in the series.

The School Gates are the only access to the school compound. They consist of a large pink archway with two wing-like doors that move to open or close the gates.

Its campus is a large castle with pink walls and blue roofs built around a courtyard.

Ground / First Floor

Most of the Classrooms are found on the ground floor around the central courtyard. The side buildings have corridors through which the classrooms can be accessed and it has stairways from which the upper parts of the school can be accessed.

Namely: On the East Wing, Applied Convergence Classroom, Technical Incantations Classroom, Magic Invocation Classroom, Magic Defence Classroom, and on the West Wing, Potionology Classroom, Metamorphosymbiosis Classroom, and the Survival Training Classroom. Each classroom also acts as storage for whatever items the subject requires.

The School Kitchen, where Chef Sfoglia works, Students may also be assigned to do the cooking as chores or as punishment. Located in the West Wing

In the North Wing, The Entrance Hall is a large room found opposite the School Gates, and it is accessed by a set of grand stairs.

The Cafeteria / School Hall is a large room found on the ground floor. It has a large dome of glass as its outer wall and there are long tables where the students have their breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It has a special tier for staff members. Parties and balls are often held there and during such occasions, the tables are removed to make a place for the festivities. It is found below the Headmistress' Office and behind the Entrance Hall, in the North Wing.

The West Wing also contains The School Infirmary where students are treated in case of health problems and injuries. It is composed of an office and a resting room with many beds. It is managed by Nurse Ofelia and her assistant.

The West Tower is where the Magic Archive of Alfea is found. Precious and rare books and scrolls about many things can be found there and the school's Codex used to be kept there. A Pixie, named Concorda, is the keeper of the Secret Archives.

The first floor of the east tower contains the Applied convergence Classroom which also acts as the School Amphitheater for formal gatherings required by the Headmistress or otherwise. the students sometimes attend the school assembly and it is also where general meetings are often held, especially in crisis times. There is a table with chairs around it where staff members sit. Exams may also be held there.

The Central Courtyard is a large open space at the centre of the school. It contains:

Benches where students can sit and spend their free time. The Well, with underground tunnels that connects Alfea to the other magical schools, and contains various rooms and obstacles to go through in order to obtain the Star of Teamwork. It functions as a gathering area for celebrations such as the beginning of the year and graduation ceremonies are done. It also serves as a landing space for Red Fountain ships.

Around the sides are the Gardens of Alfea. A place where students can relax and study and even practice their abilities with the accompaniment of nature.

And around the back is an open space mainly used for classes with a practical component.

Second Floor

The student Dormitories (enchanted to be bigger on the inside). Located in both the East and West Wings.

The North wing’s first floor’s ceiling is very high, taking up 2 floors, and therefore technically there is nothing here.

The Simulation Room is where virtual simulations take place. It can also be used to teleport people to other locations. Professor Palladium is the one who is in charge of the Simulation Chamber.

There is technically nothing here in the West Wing because the Archive Room Ceiling is the tallest in the entire school, taking up 4 floors. (Tho it can still be accessed from here as well but the platform is small so people usually dont.)

Third Floor

The student Dormitories (enchanted to be bigger on the inside). Located in both the East and West Wings.

The History of Magic Classroom in the East Wing Tower

And in the North Wing, the staff and Faragonda’s offices. Outside of which there is a small seating area.

Fourth Floor

The student Dormitories (enchanted to be bigger on the inside). Located in both the East and West Wings.

The Dance Studio/Gym in the East Wing Tower.

In the North wing, Faragonda and the Staff Quarters. Only accessible via the offices.

Fifth Floor

Only contains the Viewing Decks atop the two Towers of Alfea. Only accessible by Flight or Teleportation.

Basement

The basement of Alfea is sprawling. It contains what will become Musa’s Music Cafe, the Alfea Museum, the Hall of Memories (formerly: Fairy Animals), the magical Entrance to the Alfea Greenhouse, the Library (containing the Research Lectern with Miss Barbetea as its Librarian) with its Restricted Section, and finally the Hall of Enchantments (It contains the hall of infamy, where the portraits of all the enemies of the Magic Dimension can be found, the entire history of the magical universe and contains the Heart of Alfea), only accessible through the Headmistress’s Office.

The rest of the images here include a Key, a Compass and a small sketch i did to plan out how many floors Alfea actually has.

Dorm Assignments

The students use all three levels of the student dorms. And where they go rotate every three years. So if you joined the school and are assigned to the second floor dorms, you stay there until u graduate then the freshmen after you will take over it.

Once again all dorms are enchanted to be bigger than they seem.

For the Staff, (All dorms are enchanted to be bigger than they seem from the outside)

Faragonda and Grizelda (daphne in future) Share a dorm, the North Wing, central Dorm.

Palladium, Wizzgizz, Avalon share a dorm, the North Wing, East (left) Dorm

When the winx become teachers, they will insist on sharing a dorm, the North Wing, West (right) dorm.

The non teaching staff usually have a built in dorm at wherever they are working, so Miss Barbetea has a room in the library, and Nurse Ofelia and her assistant share a room in the infirmary and so on. Their rooms are also enchanted so they are bigger on the inside.

Vin/Elend (Mistborn): I'm almost finished with the first book and I love them so much. They just make me feel so giddy.

Nesta/Cassian (A Court of Thorns and Roses): Mostly pre-ACOFAS, though. ACOWAR Nessian has my heart. Also Gwynriel.

Kaz/Inej (Six of Crows): I have to agree with Liv on this. They are perfect for each other.

For Winx Club my favourite ships are Brandon x Stella and Bloom x Sky.

The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson. I love Sanderson, one of my favourite authors of all time and I haven't even read the entire Cosmere yet.

The Crucible by Arthur Miller. I'm currently re-reading it for my thesis.

Salem's Story: Reading the Witch Trials of 1692 by Bernard Rosenthal. Also for my thesis.

Currently Craving:

Peace, which sounds very pretentious, but life has been weird the past years due to personal circumstances. Luckily I'll be off for a couple of months before I start my masters. Hopefully I can get control back over my life, lmfao.

Using Fashion To Make Fiction Closer To Reality

Just straight up throwing my Fashion MFA thesis plans to the void so I can edit them or look back at them later for when I work on it

I have always had a lot a love of art and storytelling growing up. And something I love about animation, which I focused my BA on, is how it brings all sorts of stories to life with the different mediums it involves. Visual art, music, and storytelling are so important that without them the emotion and tone that are integral to a project’s voice is gone. In my projects, I particularly like to focus on character design. What helps to express a character? Being able to show off their personality and demeanor with their design to let viewers know who they’re dealing with in a story, or at least how they are supposed to understand them at first glance.

And for all the fiction that they are, people love emulating their favorite characters in media as we’ve recently seen with the rise of cartoon-inspired fashion and cosplay. From the accessories that characters wear, to their outfits. Demon Slayer’s earrings. Sailor Moon’s celestial-based Jewelry and pastel 90s fashion that is famous for its soft, cute, and cozy aesthetic. The return in popularity of Winx Club for its turn of the century “Y2K” fashion that features bright colorful modern outfits in a world that is a mix of both fantasy and sci-fi. Disney fans who are particularly known for their love of “Disney-bounding” due to the restrictions the Disney parks have on costume wearing. The practice of media-inspired wear has become a phenomenon. These outfits bring comfort to these previous viewers that come back around to turn television into a source for their inspiration and style. I certainly have found such while I was growing up cosplaying with friends and trying my best to make my clothes look like those of my favorite characters.

And although it may come off that only Fashion inspires what brings back the popularity of certain media, I also believe that the way these shows have brought attention to certain fashion trends of their time allow them to become immortalized in a way that sets them apart. And the fondness for that allows them to come back to life due to the nostalgia they bring their audience that has grown with their favorite series or movies.

So what I would like to focus on in the fashion design master’s program with this knowledge is; how do you achieve a set of outfits that become cohesive enough to help reflect the tone of the story they take place in while also reflecting each character separately to show their personality and journey through their clothing? And finally, with that research done, I would like to expand on my own work in animation and comics by focusing on designs and fabric that help to leave the wearer and the viewer understanding these characters through their outfits. I would love for my thesis to include a mix of these two mediums with my own animated fashion on these characters transitioning into real clothing to tell their stories together in a way that makes fantasy and fiction feel closer to reality.
