hahaaaaaa i’m returning the essay :) these were a joy to answer! buckle up, buttercup! (link to ask game if anyone wants to join)

7. Do they want/have kids?

OOF okay. I honestly can’t decide so bear with me.

On the one hand, there’s the “they wouldn’t have kids” camp, and I’m into it. I don’t see either of them being willing to give up their active lifestyles but being responsible enough to be like “that means no kids.” But they both could also fall into the “I just don’t want kids” category which is so valid. Tenten isn’t motherly in any regard and Neji could very well refuse to have children for clan reasons alone regardless of any ethical changes.

On the flip side… they’d be badass parents and y’all already know I’m a sucker for domestic cuteness. I can definitely picture safety-tipped kunai strewn about the house (loft above the shop, it’s canon in my head) and toddler scribbles pinned to the walls of Neji’s office (assuming for obvious reasons that he’s not often in active combat situations nowadays). Their child would be the ultimate middle finger to the clan’s old ways and pave the path to a brighter future, and then Neji could give his own child the happy childhood he was robbed of, breaking generational cycles etc.

Both headcanons fit pleasantly into canon. Nejiten could be the communal uncle and auntie for the next gen kids, showing up to career days and dropping off forgotten lunches when their parents are in a bind at work, cheering for every single kid in the chunin exams while also critiquing each one. But they also could be parents to one (or more) of the conceptually coolest kids in the whole next gen AND role models for their niece and nephews (because so many of Boruto’s life problems would be solved if he could just talk to Neji for like 5 minutes).

8. Have an AU thought?

Several. Here’s one I might actually write one day:

Modern AU, dance teacher Tenten is waiting with her students for their rides to show up after class, and a different car than usual shows up for Himawari and— oh no, that’s not Naruto or Hinata, that’s Himawari’s hot uncle. Oh look, a week later he’s come to get her again. And again. And again. And Tenten’s starting to think Neji picks Himawari up from dance every week just to flirt with her. (She doesn’t mind it one bit.)

11. What is their love language?

For Tenten I’m torn, but I honestly think quality time beats out gifts. Like, a gift that isn’t a weapon is incredibly touching (as are the weapons), but nothing beats the feeling of relaxing with a loved one and knowing that they’re actually listening when she speaks. In her relationship, she doesn’t care if she and Neji are on duty together, or whispering in the dark past their bedtime, or doing housework, or on vacation, she just wants to be near him all the time and she loves that he encourages this. They spend enough time apart due to work. Together Time is Together Time.

I’m also torn on Neji, but touch-starved as he is, I’m thinking acts of service mean the most. He spends his whole life running around after others and serving or otherwise watching out for them, often in a literal sense, on top of other responsibilities and hobbies and basic necessities for staying alive, so to come home exhausted at the end of the day and find fresh sheets on the bed (with Tenten probably in them, waiting on him to come home)? Man might actually cry.

“I’m telling you, it’s a good idea!”

Gaara, let me out you little shit—

“It’s not, you’ll get both the enemy and us killed!”

Shut up, Shukaku.

“Neji, come on, you’ve never lost to him!”

We could take all these weaklings if you just let me take over.

“Tenten, we are not trying out an unpractised technique in the middle of—”

Tenten swore, something guttural in a slew of sharp syllables that didn’t match any of the languages Gaara knew but he needed no translation for. He really didn’t have time to focus on their conversation with a multitude of enemies surrounding them, but their volume had increased to the point it could no longer be ignored.

They’d shut up if you let me out, ya know.

Shukaku wasn’t helping his split concentration either, and he ultimately needed to sidestep a flying kick that bypassed his sand while trying to concentrate in four directions at once.

Unacceptable. A whirling scream of sand pulverised the unfortunate ronin with a nasty crunch.

Lee, a good thirty metres away from the loud conversation, knocked two enemies into trees with a loud cry of “Leaf Hurricane!” then turned and, with enough volume to freeze every person in the entire clearing—Gaara included—bellowed, “Tenten! There is no reason for such language!”

You’re fucking kidding me, right?

Lee had interesting priorities, that Shukaku and Gaara could agree on.

You’re the one who actively writes him letters. Dude.

“Oh, for the love of—” Tenten growled under her breath. “Is that what you care about right now!?”

Across the clearing, Kankurō cackled.

“What would Gai-sensei say about such foul words!?” Lee shouted back.

“What the fuck?” said one of Gaara’s opponents. Gaara had half a mind to agree with him.

“You know what?” Tenten said to Neji. “Fuck this.”

She then turned and bolted across the field.

She is a joke of a shinobi and a joke of a person and she is wailing, unable to stop the sobs that escape from her throat, so pained that her cats start to freak out, sprinting around the apartment, so loud that in only a few minutes she hears Sasuke’s soft-knuckled rapt on her bedroom window, which only makes her cries grow louder and more sorrowful, because why is Sasuke of all people, whose been through so much more suffering than she could ever imagine, who has his own shit to deal with and work through, who has even stronger bonds with other people that he could be hanging out with, who surely has better things to do with his time, why is he trying to check on her?

Ilex verticillata 'Winter Gold' (Winterberry holly) is a female cultivar with peachy-salmon coloured fruits. It needs a male pollinator that flowers at the same time to produce berries and Ilex verticillata 'Southern Gentleman' is recommended by nurseries. One male is sufficient for pollinating 6-10 female shrubs. These plants need an acidic, humus rich, moist soil and they can be pruned in early spring just before new growth appears.

23. A ship you unwillingly came around to: GaaLee/LeeGaa. Not because I had anything against them, but because that pairing never would have crossed my mind had the fandom not created it. I saw it the first few times on my dash and was like “huh, that checks out, okay” and never thought about it any deeper than that.

But I very quickly discovered that there’s a bit of an overlap between GaaLee and Nejiten shippers (see: I read rumor has it and when we’re alone and similar works) and while GaaLee is still not ✨elite✨ in my book, it’s getting to the point where I’m legitimately surprised and a little disappointed if I’m reading a Nejiten fic and it’s not a background pairing at minimum.

Ship ask game: Shikatema!

Ship it!

1. What made you ship it?

Tbh they were the first couple I was SURE of. A few key pieces of evidence come into play:

Re: “dad, what made you fall in love with someone like mom?” Saw that scene and my biggest takeaway was “cool, I know nothing about Shikamaru’s dad except he gets pegged.” That, combined with the rampant misogyny displayed by young Shikamaru, led me to believe that a powerhouse of a woman was gonna wind up with Shikamaru.

There’s a scene (which I believe is anime only) in which Ino bodyshames Choji and, to comfort his friend, Shikamaru’s brilliant response was something along the lines of “skinny girls like Ino aren’t even that cute, I like a girl with a little meat on her bones.” Heard that and my brain was like “okay, looking for a powerhouse woman who isn’t drawn with a 00 waist. shouldn’t be hard to find.”

Chunin exams. As SOON as they threw Temari in the ring with Shikamaru, I fell in love with them. Like, conceptually. I just knew that wasn’t going to be their only encounter. And then when Temari showed up during the Sasuke Retrieval Arc?? Game over, they were IT for me.

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

I’m a (simp)le gal— the brainy characters have always drawn me to them. I love how evenly matched they are, and in areas where they aren’t matched, they complement each other so well.

And the (eventual) mutual respect… SHEESH. Temari pushes Shikamaru to be the best version of himself, and that leads to Shikamaru being one of the only characters worthy of commanding a soldier as powerful as her.

They make me laugh. Never once do either of them lose their composure until the other is around, which is downright adorable, but also sets up some iconic comedic moments (re: honeymoon shopping).

And the symbolism!! Okay Mr. “I just wanna be a cloud, floating wherever the breeze takes me.” I see you marrying the breeze herself! You think you’re sooo slick lmao.

3. Unpopular opinion?

Yeah I think they need more sweet & soft moments instead of being the “naggy/violent wife” trope every time they get an ounce of screen time together these days. And I especially don’t like the (fan) characterizations of Temari as an abuser.

Bonus round: They’d make excellent villains. I wouldn’t hate it at all if the canon storyline ever took that route (it won’t). Deeply in love, watching the world burn from the flames they sparked, hand in unlovable hand.
