Anathema

Yubel likes flowers. The flowers do not necessarily like Yubel.

They were attracting some looks.

Juudai had been exploring the monster worlds for the past three weeks or so, partly out of a desire to see that things were settling down to some kind of normalcy now that the threat of the Haou was over, and partly just because they were interesting and he hadn’t really had a chance to enjoy them before. He’d spent a day or two visiting Misaawa and Taniya, explored a city full of robots, gotten acquainted with some dragons, gone fishing on the high seas, and had nearly been eaten by some sort of giant snake in a jungle. All in all, he considered that it had been a good trip. For the last two days, he and Yubel had been wandering over the foothills of some forested mountains, during which time they’d seen some spectacular views but had not encountered another sentient species. Juudai was glad to be back in something resembling civilization.

The village was populated primarily with plant-based creatures, ranging from the ones that were little more than flowers with eyes on up to elfin creatures with leaves and branches growing from their hair. All of them were giving Juudai and Yubel strange looks. No, that wasn’t quite right, he realized - it was Yubel that most of their interest was fixed on.

Well, whatever their deal was, they would just have to cope. Juudai was tired and hungry and in need of a bath. Yubel had kept them both alive in the wilderness by their knowledge of what plants were wholesome, which inedible, and which were downright dangerous. Juudai had a vague recollection that in their human existence, they had worked in the castle garden, and still retained a knowledge of, and fondness for, plants of all kinds. That was all very well, and had kept him from starving, but now he wanted a proper meal.

The first thing to do, however, would be to get hold of some of the local currency.

“Hey,” he said, to a friendly-looking acorn. “Do you know where we could...” But the acorn had already cast a terrified look at Yubel and scuttled away.

“Huh,” said Juudai. “I didn’t think you were that scary.”

“I wasn’t trying to be.” Yubel sounded a little hurt, and Juudai didn’t blame them. It seemed to him that a person like Yubel ought to be able to be themselves in a world of monsters.

“You’ll have to forgive him.” The voice came from one of the more humanoid monsters, a young man with green hair and pointed ears. “This is an isolated town. We mostly see plant-types here. We know about humans from those of us who have partners in the human world, but we rarely see Fiend-types here. In truth, we discourage them.” He gave Yubel a disapproving look. “They tend to bring trouble.”

“Well, Yubel isn’t going to cause any trouble,” said Juudai. “So anyway, is there anywhere I could earn some money around here?”

“There’s a job broker at the center of town,” said the elf, “but I doubt...”

But Juudai had already started towards the town center. After a bit of poking around, he did indeed find a building where a man sat at a window with a cork board behind him, stuck all over with slips of paper. A few people were hanging around, investigating the offerings. They gave Juudai and Yubel dirty looks when they approached, but Juudai ignored them. He sauntered up to the desk and grinned his friendliest grin.

“Hi,” he said. “We’re looking for a job.”

“We don’t give jobs to that one’s kind,” said the broker.

Juudai frowned. “But we...”

“It’s all right,” said Yubel. “I can go away.”

Juudai opened his mouth to protest, but Yubel’s voice in his mind said, You need a place to rest and something to eat. My job is to protect you. If the best way to do that is for me to duck out of sight for a little while, then that is how it must be.

But these people are being stupid.

Then let them be stupid. Take their job, take their money, and enjoy knowing that I will be reaping the benefits along with you in spite of all they’ve done.

And that was Yubel all over: putting his interests above their own, but with an edge built in. He supposed they were probably right.

“Fine,” he said. “Leave town. I’ll catch up to you later.”

Yubel nodded and left. Juudai turned back to the man at the counter.

“Now have you got a job for me?” he asked testily.

The man scowled. “You’re just going to meet back up with that fiend later.”

“Then give me a dangerous job - one you wouldn’t want to give to someone you liked,” Juudai suggested.

“Hmm...” the man pressed his lips together thoughtfully. “Well, there is one...”

He fished around among the slips of paper until he found the one he wanted, and pushed it across the desk to Juudai.

“Here,” he said.

Juudai read the paper. Someone apparently wanted him to bring them the juice of some kind of flower.

“The heck is an anathema flower?” he asked.

“Highly poisonous,” said the broker. “Even to touch it with your bare skin can kill you, but if it’s treated the right way, it can be made into a medicine that treats a lot of the infections us Plant-types are susceptible to. Just one blossom is worth a thousand times its weight in gold.”

Juudai thought a thousand times the weight of a flower probably still wasn’t very much gold, but he said, “Sure, no problem.”

“Fool,” said the broker. “You’ll kill yourself even trying to get near it.”

“I’ll manage,” said Juudai. “See you later.”

He wandered back out of town and found Yubel loitering under a tree.

“Well, I got a job,” he said. “Should be right up your alley.”

“Oh? Do tell,” Yubel said.

“I’m supposed to find something called an anathema flower,” he explained.

“Ever hear of it?”

Yubel considered. “Low-growing vine. Prefers low light and high moisture. Commonly found growing around the base of the common or alpine nectarpine tree. Its sap is toxic and can cause chemical burns just by touching it. Inhaling its pollen can cause respiratory damage if too much is ingested at once.”

“Wow, they sound pretty nasty,” said Juudai.

“Which is probably why someone is willing to pay for someone else to do it,” said Yubel. They smiled. “Fortunately I have had dealings with it before. Come. Let us find some plants.”

They set off into the forest. Juudai wondered if they would go straight to the place where this anathema flower grew, but that didn’t seem to be Yubel’s goal. They rooted around by the edge of a streamlet until at last they found a cluster of plants with soft stems and thick, rounded leaves.

“This is what we want,” they said, ripping up a handful of the stuff and passing it to Juudai. “Rub the juice of this into your eyes and nose, then eat some of it. It will sting and taste unpleasant, but after about fifteen minutes, it will take effect and the anathema plant won’t be able to harm you for the next day or so.”

Juudai unhesitatingly did as he was told. After all, Yubel was doing it too, now, so it couldn’t be that bad. The stuff did indeed taste unpleasantly sour, and made his eyes itch and burn so much he began to wonder if the anathema flower might have been preferable, but after the plant had been allowed a few minutes to do its work, Yubel permitted him to soak his handkerchief in the stream and press it over his face to cool the itch. He took a long drink to get the foul taste out of his mouth.

“Geez, what was that stuff?”

“It is called pennyleaf,” they said. “It is an antidote to many of the common plant-based poisons.”

“So why don’t they know that?” Juudai asked, getting up from where he’d been kneeling by the creek.

Yubel shrugged. “Probably because it tastes so foul that many assume it must be poisonous itself. Come. Let us find an anathema plant.”

They began to walk. Yubel checked to make sure they knew what direction they were going, and then struck out for a stand of pine trees in the distance. They looked like any other pine trees to Juudai, but Yubel assured him that they could tell by the way the branches were arranged that these were nectarpines and nothing else, and Juudai wasn’t going to argue. As they drew nearer, he began to smell a distinctly sweet aroma on the air, and asked about it.

“No, those aren’t the anathema flowers,” they said. “Those are the pines you’re smelling. They get their name from the sweet smell and taste of their sap. That is another reason why so few people know the connection between pennyleaf and anathema flower poison. If everyone knew how to get past the trees’ defenders, all the nectarpines would soon be cut and boiled for their sugar, and then there would be no more.”

Juudai nodded. “You sure know a lot of things.”

“I have had a lot of time to learn them. And I like plants.” Yubel paused and pointed. “Look, you can see them now.”

And so he could in a thick carpet around the base of the trees, Juudai could see a layer of glossy green leaves. Speckled against the green were a number of flowers, their petals white but dappled with purple and red. They were rather pretty, and if he hadn’t already been warned they were poisonous, he might have thought that this lovely, sweet-smelling grove was a fine place to lie down for a nap. As it was, he took a few steps closer and then paused.

“It’s all right,” said Yubel. “The antidote has had time to work.”

“Yeah, but what if I get the sap on my clothes?” Juudai asked. “Your antidote will wear off by tomorrow and I’ll still have poison on me.”

“A good thought,” said Yubel. All right, allow me.”

They took to the air, drifting carefully beneath the overhanging boughs of the trees until the nearest blossoms were within reach. Yubel picked a handful - half a dozen or so in all - and passed them to Juudai. He took them gingerly, but they didn’t seem inclined to do him any harm. The stems had an oddly prickly, sticky feel, as if they were trying to cling to his skin like velcro.

“Ick,” he said, and wrapped them up carefully in a few dry leaves. “Thanks, Yubel.”

“You are most welcome,” they assured him.

Within a few minutes, they were back in town. The broker looked surprised to see them.

“I thought I said...” he began.

Juudai placed the flowers on the desk like a gambler laying down a winning hand.

“Here’s your flowers,” he said.

The broker’s eyes bugged. “How on earth...? Never mind, I’m not sure I want to know.”

“Good, because I wasn’t going to tell you,” said Juudai.

“Well, a deal is a deal,” said the broker, as he began filling a cloth bag with coins. “And I won’t say I’m not glad to have these. We have sick people in this town who could do with the medicine these will make, so thank you for that.”

“Thank Yubel,” said Juudai. “They were the one who did all the real work. I wouldn’t have been able to lay hands on these in a million years without their help.”

“Huh,” said the broker. He looked at Yubel, who smirked. “Well, I suppose I might have been a little bit hasty, at that.”

“I think you were,” said Yubel. “But I will be gracious and accept your apology.”

“Hm, well,” said the broker. His greenish skin went even more green. “I do apologize, then. I can see I was being closed-minded.”

Juudai got the feeling that Yubel was thinking, “Yes, you were,” but had decided not to say so.

“Glad that’s settled,” he said aloud. “So, where can a couple of hungry flower-gatherers find lunch in this place?”

A short while later, he and Yubel were sitting at the town’s common room, enjoying a meal of dumpling soup. The broker had come with them and exchanged a few words with the innkeeper on the subject of an ailing mother, the uses of flowers, and the benefits of being nice to the people who fetched them. After that, the innkeeper couldn’t have been more pleasant, and had given them the best room in the building without charge. Word seemed to be getting around, because the looks Juudai and Yubel were getting now were curious but no longer hostile. Juudai got the feeling that a lot of people were going to feel they owed him and Yubel favors after this. He smiled as he slurped his soup. It was nice to be appreciated.

“They seem to like me now,” Yubel observed, with some amusement.

“They should,” said Juudai. “After all, you’re the best.”

“I don’t really care what anyone but you thinks of me,” they said, but they seemed to be pleased anyway.

“Well, it’s nice to have friends,” said Juudai. “Who knows? Maybe we’ll come back here again one day, when they need more flowers.”

Yubel looked around thoughtfully. A small girl wearing a dress made of flower petals waved shyly at them.

“Perhaps we should,” they said. “After all, I always did like flowers.”

Chapter 17: Truth

Standing before the pristine tori that marked the entrance to the stairway leading up to Shōshitsu Shrine, you couldn’t help but remember how you had felt the day you came to this world. The uneasiness that had crept upon you back then was crawling across your skin like millions of tiny spiders, making you nearly want to collapse on the floor and just cower in fear. The place horrified you. It was so heavy with the many centuries of sadness and torture it had caused for hundreds, if not thousands of souls.

“Katsuki,” you spoke softly, as if trying to not disturb any malicious spirits around you. “Do you know any history of this shrine?”

Deciding that you weren’t going to start walking up on your own, Bakugou gave you a slight push with his hand against your back, forcing you to start following him up the stairs. “I don’t know why it was originally built, if that’s what you mean. But I do know the story of it and why it’s called the Vanishing Shrine.”

“O-oh? What is it?”

Bakugou gave a small grumble in thought, as if he were trying to remember all the details. “People say that a widowed woman came here every day to pray for the soul of her lover to return to her. It was constant prayers, rituals, anything that she could do that she believed would work. I think she did this for… twenty years?”

“Wow… that’s dedication.”

“Nothing worked in the end. She was still a lonely, foolish old woman. Until she decided to hang herself on a beam at the entrance of the shrine. From that moment on, people believed that it was cursed. Any idiot can feel that it’s different here… It’s heavy.” Bakugou turned his gaze to look out into the forest that ran along the stairway, which were dense and dark, even in the sunlight. “There is something here… and strange things do happen. Like you, for example.”

“What about me?”

Bakugou looked down at you, his gaze curious and almost cautious. “Everything about you. The things you talk about, the way you were dressed, that black item that I destroyed that you called a… phone?”

“Yeah, that’s right…”

“People are found here all the time, screaming and being incoherent. But I think that just being in this place curses the mind. Makes people do and say crazy things.”

“Hm… I see. That is an interesting story.” Keeping your eyes down on your feet so you wouldn’t trip, you could only imagine what his reaction would be if you had told him the truth last night. He probably would have thought you were completely insane, but that didn’t really matter now. Who knows what would happen at the top of these steps, or what would become of you when all of this was over with. Still, when that final step was before you, there was no hesitation as you crossed the threshold onto the shrine grounds.

Almost instantly, everything was lighter. You could hear the birds and bugs chirping away in the forest, the sun warm against your exposed skin. It seemed so welcoming that any story or rumor could nearly immediately be dismissed. That is what made it so dangerous, you realized. It called people in and made them stay long enough for tragedy to strike.

“Well?” Bakugou interrupted your thoughts, having not taken that last step up. He seemed content to stay outside of the boundaries, and in truth, you wanted him to. “Can you remember anything?”

“Ah… Give me just a moment, I’m going to walk around a bit. I’ll call if I need you.” You gave him a comforting smile, feeling your heart flutter at the worried furrow of his brow. “I’ll be okay.”

“Fine. Don’t go too far.”

Gathering your courage, you began your exploration, walking around the beautiful, pristine building. As you did, you tried to look for… well, anything. Anything at all that stuck out as odd to you, but by the time you walked around twice, all you had found was an oddly placed rope still dangling ominously from a beam at the entrance to the shrine. Giving a frustrated sigh, you eventually stopped, crossing your arms over your chest.

“Anything, [L/N]?” Bakugou called to you, still in his place and barely within your field of vision.

“No, nothing. I can’t find a single-- EEK!” You squealed out in shock as the bushes beside you ruffled violently, making you stumble back over your feet and land square on your ass.

“What was that?! Are you okay--!”

“-- I-it’s okay, Katsuki! I’m okay, it’s just… a fo-...” Your throat closed up as you realized what it was you were looking at, glaring at you hunched over in the grass. “-- a fox.”

Sure enough, familiar dark brown eyes were staring back at you, glancing over every inch of your form as the animal stayed low to the ground. With a flick of its left ear, you immediately saw that it was missing quite a large section, making your heart nearly leap out of your throat. “Y-you… It’s you!”

With your loud exclamation, the fox hissed as it’s back arched, tail and fur along it’s back flared in defense. Unlike what you had experienced, the animal was completely feral with no signs that it could understand you, let alone recognize you. In a panic, you shifted to your hands and knees, crawling closer to it. “P-please, you have to recognize me! You sent me here!” The closer you got, the more aggressive the fox became, snarling with pointed carnivorous teeth. It was then that any hold on sanity you may have had broke, almost lunging at the creature, but you found you were held back by strong hands on your arms.

“[L/N], what the hell are you doing?!” Bakugou pulled you back away from the fox as it dashed off into the woods, which only made you even more hysterical, trying to fight Bakugou to get away from him.

“N-No, come back! You sent me here, you damn thing! Come back!” When you were swept off your feet and into Bakugou’s arms, you finally gave up on struggling, clutching on tightly to his robes. “T-That was the fox, it knows me! It sent me here!” Sobbing and wailing, you could barely hear Bakugou curse or feel the movement of him going down the stairs.

“Damn it, [L/N]... I told you, this place takes hold of those with fragile minds. I should never have brought you back here…”

From that moment on, time went by in a blur.

You couldn’t seem to register or focus on anything. You felt numb, lost and completely alone in the universe, more than you ever had before. Your only hope of getting home had failed, and now you had to accept that here is where you would be until you died. You would never again experience scrolling through your favorite blogs, playing videogames with your friends, cuddling with your cat, or the calmness of driving a car in the warm evenings. All the mundane activities that you had taken for granted were gone, and though you had tried to come to terms with it way before you came to the shine, having a definitive answer was crushing.

There was no more ‘maybe’. Instead, it was all absolute. You would live out the remainder of your life here.

Period.

End of story.

“I guess that settles that.”

“Eh?”

You and Bakugou shared a confused look, flames of the fire in front of you creating shadows that danced across his face. He seemed genuinely shocked that you had said anything in the first place, but you felt too numb to really ask why.

“Don’t you think?”

“Think what? [L/N], you haven’t said a single word to me in three days, and that’s what you all the sudden come out with? What the hell are you thinking about? I thought that place had made you go completely mad.” Bakugou reached up to rub the inner corners of his eyes, obviously at his wits end with this whole situation. “Damn it, I thought you weren’t ever going to snap out of it.”

“Three days?” You gave your forehead a good rub, trying to recall any recent event besides your interaction with the fox. “Have I really been quiet that long?”

“Not just quiet, but damn comatose.” Bakugou handed you a stick, one end of it skewered through a cooked fish. Timidly, you took it from him, trying to remember when you had stopped to go fishing. “But to answer your question,” Bakugou continued, starting on cooking another fish over the fire. “It does settle it. We’re about halfway back home.”

“Can I have some sake?”

“Only if you eat.” Bakugou watched you closely for a moment, waiting until you took your first bite of the fish before handing you the alcohol flask. You let it sit on your lap for a while, eating most of the fish before you took your first sip. The heat of the alcohol warmed you almost instantly, bringing feeling to your numb body.

After your first hefty swig, you gave a sigh, leaning back on your hands. “I should have known that was going to happen. I should of just… expected it.”

“I still don’t understand what happened…” Bakugou mumbled, only sparing you a quick glance as you took another drink. “What the hell were you even doing yelling at that animal?”

“If I tell you, I know you won’t believe me. Even I wouldn’t believe me. It’s absolutely bonkers!”

“What the hell is ‘bonkers’?”

“Look, Katsuki.” You shifted yourself to face him, taking another drink. “Can you just… have an open mind right now? Just for a minute? I’m about to tell you something that you won’t understand and that sounds absolutely insane. But I swear to you, on my life, that it’s the truth. Every word of it.”

Bakugou observed your face for a moment, giving a heavy sigh. The contemplation and curiosity were obvious on his stern expression, but you could tell by his stiff body language that he was wary. “Fine… Go on, then.”

“I… am from the future. A different era completely, about 500 years from now, more or less.” You were surprised how casually the truth came out of your mouth, even feeling comfortable enough admitting this to take a huge bite out of your fish. “I am, or I mean, I was a college student in Kyoto studying [degree]. My best friends Mirio, Nejire and Tamaki talked me into visiting that damn fucking shrine as a little trip. I even skipped my class for it! We drove here down the highway on Mirio’s dinky little blue car, though I slept the whole two-hour trip.”

As you went on and on, Bakugou listened silently, munching on his fish. You told him about your entire past, where you grew up, your family and everything that you used to love doing. “... I miss real shoes and jeans. Jackets with the fluff on the inside that keep you nice and toasty. Coffee! Oh god, I miss coffee.” With an agonized groan, you leaned forward, your head resting on Bakugou’s shoulder. “Mm… And chocolate. Just candy in general. My cat used to love licking lollipops…”

At the mention of your furry best friend, your eyes immediately welled up with tears, sniffling as you squeezed in closer to rest against Bakugou’s side. “My cat… I miss my cat. I wonder what happened after I left… I hope someone is taking care of them. It must have been so scary for me to just up and vanish like that…”

“That seems to be who you miss the most. But I’m sure that they are being cared for…”

Bakugou’s quiet, judgement free comfort brought a heat to your chest, your tears escaping you as you nuzzled your face into his robes. “Katsuki… You believe me?”

“[L/N]... I…”

~~ Chapter 8 ~~

Saying farewell to Effie and Haymitch turns out to be a more difficult task than I expected. Haymitch quietly reminds me to keep him informed, that he and Effie both wish to be at my wedding, wherever I decide it will be held. The absence of any sarcastic comment from him unnerves me.

“Aunt Effie despises the country,” I say and Haymitch shrugs.

“She will brave the monotony for your wedding.” He winks then and I manage a small smile before he helps me into the carriage.

I find myself leaning out the window as we pull away, watching them grow smaller until we turn a corner and I can no longer see them. I will miss them, I realise when they vanish from view. As badly as my husband hunt turned out in the details, it was successful. I am engaged to be married, and there is no taking that back now. My success, questionable though it may be, is in large part due to their help. Now I simply have to learn to live with the consequences.

I settle into my seat and find Madge watching me. Unable to find the words I need to broach the thousands of things we should speak on, I turn vacant eyes back out the window, onto the street. We are silent as the buildings thin and then eventually fall away altogether.

The removal of their restrictive presence allows me space to breathe. Trees rise up around us, meadows and fields reach towards the horizon as though they might touch the sky if they could but grow fingers. I feel as I do at the end of the day, when a corset is removed and my body sings in relief.

This is where I belong.

“What shall you do first when we return to Everdeen?”

“Take Sagittaria out for a long ride, I should think,” I murmur and Madge hums. I frown as I realise how that must sound. “After seeing my family, of course.”

“Of course.”

“You must be happy to be seeing Maysilee.”

“Katniss, I know I failed you as a chaperone and as a friend. I should have seen more, advised caution instead of encouraging the haste–”

“I do not mean it as a criticism,” I say and turn back to her. It strikes me then how fortunate I am that Madge returned to my life at such a time. Without her, I would have no real friend. I cannot bear to have the events of the past month cause a rift between us. “I am not yet ready to talk about it, but we will. There will be time enough before the damned wedding to beat the subject to death with a spoon.”

“A soup spoon or custard spoon?”

“Well no need to make it difficult on ourselves, so I suppose a soup spoon.”

Madge laughs at this, although I am unable to join her just yet. After that, we are more like ourselves, able to converse and even smile. I avoid all thoughts of Robert and our night at the masquerade, if it even was him. Thinking on the questions that remain will no doubt make me mad. Whether that is a furious mad or an insane mad, I have not yet decided and am not yet ready to explore the possibilities. An ache resides in my chest every time I think on it, yet the further away from Capitol that we drive, the less it disturbs me.

Peeta Mellark and my pending marriage to him is a problem I will have to face eventually, but for now I must focus on more pressing issues.

We ride our horses the last few miles, enjoying the fresh air and the perfumes of summer at Everdeen. I crane my neck to survey a few of the fields and check on the progress of our crops. All seems well enough, yet I cannot shake this feeling that something had gone amiss in my absence.

Primrose and Maysilee greet us at the front stairs. Matching smiles grace their faces. Madge, in her haste to dismount and greet her daughter, startles Diablo and is nearly trampled under hoof. The three of them talk over one another as Prim attempts to spill half a dozen stories while Madge showers Maysilee with kisses and affection.

When I finally manage to dismount, Prim ceases her chatter and embraces me. “We have missed you! I want to hear all about your time in Capitol. You were quite stingy with the details in your letters. Who is your betrothed?”

“We’ll talk about that later,” I wave the topic away. “How is our father?”

“The same, I am afraid. Doctor Aurelius worries about muscular deterioration and bed sores, but Mother has been working to prevent both. He says that Father could not have a better nurse.” Well at least she is managing well, I think but do not voice it. I can see in the way Prim shifts her eyes that she is keeping something from me. No matter. I will find out soon enough.

“Miss Everdeen!” A strange male voice calls and I look up to see a man on horseback approaching. Prim mutters angrily under her breath and releases me. “Miss Everdeen! We meet at last!”

“Have you found it then?” Prim asks him and he shakes his head.

“I did not. I found purple blooms with yellow markings but they did not possess blue thorns.”

“Well then back out to the woods with you, sir! I will need those flowers for dinner this evening as they are my sister’s favourite!” It is a bold faced lie and I search my memory for any flower I know of that matches the description. I come up with nothing.

“Miss Primrose, I think you send me on a fruitless hunt.”

“I would never!” Prim yells and I decide it is time I gain control of whatever mess this is.

“Excuse me sir. Who are you to accuse my sister so?”

“Your pardon, Miss Everdeen. I am your cousin,” he states and dismounts with a wide smile and, sweeping his hat from his head, bows low to the ground. “Rory Hawthorne at your service.”

I turn murderous eyes on Prim for a moment at this revelation and she wilts in front of me. “We will discuss this later,” I seethe and move closer to my dear cousin as he stands and staggers back. He could almost pass for our brother with his dark hair and gray eyes so like mine. He is objectively quite handsome and yet I wish that I were able to spit on his boots and send him packing.

“You were not meant to be here so early. In case no one bothered to mention it, my father yet lives. This is still our land, not yours.”

“I – that is – my schedule permitted a change and–”

“Your schedule permitted a change and yet you did not bother to ascertain if a change to ours was acceptable? Good sir, I do hope you’ve not been staying here while I’ve been gone… with my sister… unchaperoned.”

Primrose gasps and Madge sniggers softly as Rory Hawthorne gapes at me.

“No! I would not dare put Miss Primrose’s reputation at stake. But your mother–”

I cross my arms over my chest and glower at him. He gulps and then his mouth flaps open then snaps shut on repeat.

“Good sir, while I find your imitation of a trout quite amusing, you are wasting my time. I am weary from several days’ travel and have tasks to see to. If there is nothing else then?” I turn towards the house without allowing him a chance to answer.

“I am staying at the inn in Seam!” he blurts out and I glance back for just long enough that he gains control of his flapping jaw.

“I hear they serve an excellent dinner. Good day, Mr. Hawthorne. Come along Primrose, Countess Hargrove. I shall need both of you this afternoon. We shall all be much too busy to entertain.” Madge’s eyes widen and she curtsies to me. I try not to laugh as we sweep into the house, leaving Mr. Hawthorne to retrieve his jaw from the ground.

“Katniss!” Primrose hisses as the door closes behind us and Madge releases her laughter. “Good heavens what happened in the city? You were like a fire breathing dragon just now! Poor Mr. Hawthorne!”

“Poor Mr. Hawthorne nothing. The nerve of him, visiting and viewing the properties as though they already belong to him. I won’t give him a second before father is dead and buried to prepare our home for chopping to pieces and auctioning.”

“That is not why he is here!” Prim purses her lips, her cheeks a brilliant pink. I take note of her behaviour and wonder at it. Has Mr. Hawthorne been courting my sister, I wonder? I’ve no chance to pry.

“Katniss? Is that you I hear?” mother’s voice floats to me down the stairs and I turn in her direction. I have to swallow a gasp at her appearance. She seems so… drained. So thin and pale, her normally glossy hair and dull shade and kept back in a messy coiffure. Still, she hurries down the stairs and embraces me. “Oh my darling, I am so happy to have you home. Your father needs you. Perhaps if you could spare time to sing for him, it might help revive him. He did always love singing for you.”

She releases me with a choked sob and I mumble out some sort of pathetic agreement to sing to my comatose father.

“Oh but where is your new husband?”

“I am not married yet, Mama. Only betrothed.”

“Will we not meet this man, then? Your letter revealed nothing! Oh but we can begin work on your dress at least. I know it shan’t be as glamorous as what Effie would see you dressed in –”

“Mama, I –”

“–but you shall be beautiful bride no matter –”

“Mellark!” The name escapes me in a near shout and my mother lifts a hand to her throat, blinking at me as though clearing smoke from her eyes. “His name is Peeta Mellark.”

“One of Reginald’s sons?”

“Oh is he the one who rescued you that day?”

“Yes,” I croak and Madge saves me, handing her precious child right back to Prim and wrapping an arm around me.

“It has been a long day of travel. We both could do with some rest and then we will share stories tonight. We have so many!” The falseness of the cheer in Madge’s voice is lost on my family. They smile and agree, happy to let us go, assuming that they shall learn the entire story this evening.

Once the tub is filled with steaming water and scented soap, my clothes discarded, I climb in and sink beneath the surface, wondering if it is possible to drown in bath water. I blow out bubbles that are annoyingly anticlimactic given the level of my frustration as I expel my breath into the water.

I immerse myself in the work of keeping Everdeen running smoothly. The more tasks I complete, the freer I feel. A week passes before I realise it, swallowed whole in the work of managing home and farm, as well as dealing with the lamentable presence of Mr. Hawthorne.

It becomes apparent to me, within a matter of days, that Mr. Hawthorne is rather fond of my sister. He lingers at her side to assist in even the most mundane of chores, regardless of how pleasant her mood. She blushes at the attention and yet it is not a demeaning blush. When he stumbles underfoot and I open my mouth to cut him to size and remind him that he has no right to be here while my father lives, that it is rude to linger about waiting for a good man to die, it is Primrose who rushes in to assist him. The words die in my throat every time that he thanks her and her blush deepens.

“How long do you wish to stay here?” I ask one afternoon. Prim makes a face at me until he turns to her, as though seeking her approval. She grants him a lovely smile and then a sharp glare, as though her manners win first but then something else takes over.

“Not much longer, I should think,” he says. “In truth, my brother Gale expected me days ago. I wrote my excuses already–”

“You should not keep your brother waiting so,” I say and ignore the strange glance that Madge gives me.

When he finally parts, promising to visit again soon to assure himself of our well being, he also whispers a promise to Primrose that he shall write, expressly to her. In his presence and even in his absence, she seems to walk and speak with a certain assurance, stand with greater height, although that may well be due to natural growth, but I cannot help but mourn the passing of her childhood nor can I help the fear that perhaps Rory Hawthorne will be her first love, only to have those hopes destroyed when he auctions off our home one piece at a time.

And yet, despite my reservations about my sister and Mr. Hawthorne, I cannot help feeling jealous of them, cannot help comparing their behaviour to mine and that of the man in the mask on that one, exquisite night.

No, not jealous, I remind myself each time the bite of green threatens to triumph.

“You could have been more pleasant to him. It’s not his fault his brother will inherit Everdeen.”

“And yet you sent him looking for a flower that does not exist,” I remind her.

“To keep him away for your return! I knew you would not wish to see him as soon as you came home.”

“Or you knew I would be upset at you withholding knowledge of his presence.” Prim purses her lips and does not attempt to deny my accusations. I sigh at her pink cheeks and bright eyes. She has the look of someone in love. “I would prefer it if you allowed yourself more time and a wider acquaintance before settling on a husband, Prim.”

“Who said anything about a husband?” she practically screeches and then flees the room.

“You’re only going to drive her into his arms faster if you forbid it,” Madge whispers and I lose it then.

“Well then what’s your grand idea?”

“It would not be so bad if they were to fall in love. Perhaps then his brother would take pity and give Everdeen to Rory.”

For one second, I sound as though I am gagging on food. “I will not sell my sister into marriage to keep the farm.”

“I did not suggest that,” Madge says with a slight bite in her tone. “Katniss, you have not been yourself since we returned. Prim was right that first day. You are like a dragon breathing fire at nearly every turn.”

“I am not,” I insist. Quite convincingly.

On some days, I attempt to sit with my father, to relieve my mother and my sister the burden of tending him, but I find that I cannot stay long. I cannot bear to see him so, not when my heart aches so and worries continue to weigh my shoulders down. I long to speak with him, to unburden my cares as I am so used to doing.

I stay silent during my time with him. Another week passes.

The gardens become a favourite haunt of mine. I examine their cultivated beds and consider changes to make the gardens more like the wildflower meadows, if slightly more tamed. It is on one such afternoon as I wander down the rows that Primrose nearly scares me half to death and once more, the tenuous situation we find ourselves in is thrown into sharp relief.

“Katniss! Katniss come quick!”

I grab fistfuls of skirt, crushing the fabric in my palms as I race up the stairs, panting hard as I reach the upper level and Prim motions me into my father’s room.

“His hand moved! I swear I saw his hand move!”

“Papa. It’s Primrose. Can you hear us? Do you think he can hear us?”

“Send for the doctor!” my mother orders and then grabs my arm, clinging to it for one desperate moment, her eyes wild. Then I become invisible, standing aside as mother and Prim and Doctor Aurelius once he arrives, hover over my father.

Hours pass with no change. No movement, only a whispered conversation between my mother and Doctor Aurelius that causes her to sob once then flee the room in tears.

“Mama!” Primrose races after her and Doctor Aurelius shakes his head.

“There is not much hope, is there?” I ask and the doctor sighs.

“I still can promise you nothing, Miss Everdeen. But from a medical perspective, no. There is not much hope. You should make preparations. Quietly if you do not wish to cause your mother more pain.”

That evening, I sit vigil, staring at my father’s fingers and willing them to move, to prove my mother right. But it is no use. By morning, all I have are itchy eyes, a distraught mother, and the overwhelming desire to crawl into a cave to sleep my life away.

But I cannot. Instead, I have Charles, one of the grooms saddle Sagittaria and escape into nature.

Sagittaria snorts in delight and chomps at the reins. She is, as I am, eager to gallop across the fields and to regain the time lost to our confinement in the city, or perhaps some sense of the world. The fragrant, smog free air rejuvenates me and I am better able to see clearly my situation and I am finally able to make decisions regarding the hundreds of problems I am faced with.

I cannot and should not be jealous of my sister, although I admit to myself that I have been feeling so lately. I made my choice for a marriage of convenience out of necessity, specifically to give her the luxury of time and the freedom to pursue a true love match. I do not regret my choice, even if the manner of it’s unfolding leaves much to be desired. I shall simply have to observe and counsel but not control the path of Prim’s relations with Mr. Hawthorne.

Madge is correct on yet another thing as well. As loathe as I am to admit it, the more days that pass with no word from Peeta, the more agitated I become. I cannot stall forever. I will have to marry him eventually, and I would prefer it to be on my own terms as much as is possible, rather than have him wander down the lane one day to insist he grows tired of waiting and demand my hand.

He left the choice in my hands, and so I shall choose. I struggle with it only a little as I brush Sagittaria with a touch too much vigour, angry with my limited options. She dances away from me and into the wall of her stall as I sigh and apologize to her. I should not exercise my frustrations on her.

My father still lies on the brink of death with no security for my sister, my mother, or myself on the other side of death. To say nothing of Madge and Maysilee as well as the several hundreds or so who have come to rely on Everdeen as their source of livelihood. With purposeful movements, I finish with Sagittaria and head straight for the study, not bothering to change from my riding habit as I sit at the desk and pen a letter.

Dearest future husband,

If we must be wed, then I would prefer to accomplish the distasteful deed here at my home. Though I risk ruining fond memories of the hills and the forests in doing so, I would rather have my mother and sister present at the blessed occasion. Send word post haste as to when I should expect you and we shall have a room and a wedding prepared for your arrival.

Sincerely,

Your dearest future wife

I stare at the words and then scrawl a messy post script.

Shall I expect any members of your loving family at this joyous ceremony?

A quick fold and seal then I search the desk for the letter he gave me before parting in Capitol, so that I might copy the direction. As I pull it from the back of a drawer, I scowl at the thing. I never opened it, too angry and heartsick over the manner of our engagement and the loss of the man in the mask…or rather Robert. I do not know which and rub my temples in confusion.

I never read this letter.

It seems to burn my palms as I stare at it. I drop it on the desk, copy the direction and then shove it back into the dark recesses of the drawer. I then sit there and consider burning it, gleefully watching the flames eat the parchment and Peeta’s words.

Instead, I leave it fester in the dark. I rise and take my letter to the hall, depositing it on the small stack of mail to be sent this afternoon. I then join my family in orchard where they have gathered to enjoy the sunshine and breeze.

“We have work to do. I have summoned the betrothed.”

My darling future wife,

How pleasing to receive your letter. I did not realize you capable of such romanticism. Thankfully, I am not too much engaged in business at this time and will be able to join you at Everdeen no later that the 30th of this month.

The Marquise de Vale shall not be joining us for our wedding as he is much too busy this time of year. I shall, however travel with one companion. A stable hand who is indispensable to me and whom you have already met. My brother Henry and his family – you do recall I told you of him – expresses a desire to be present as well, although this depends on the date of the nuptials.

I do hope this shall be agreeable. I am not inclined to arrive only to meet you at the altar. Perhaps some time is needed before we say any vows. I look forward to discussing this with you at length.

I am gnashing my teeth before I even reach the end. The words almost spur me to tearing the letter into the tiniest of pieces. Or perhaps I shall dance on it in indignant rage, as he suggested I do with the letter explaining the gift of my boots I now wear. Then I read his post script.

I promise that Joe will not cut any laces on any more of your boots unless it is a matter of life and death.

Finish Your Thought

Diego’s stutter resurfaces after the apocalypse. The siblings handle the situation better than he expected and they learn more than they thought they knew about their brother.

It doesn’t happen immediately. Diego, just like the rest of the family, needed a week or so to just sit on and process the events that just happened. They successfully avoided the end of the world. Five is back, but he’s not the same person they all remember and he never will be. Klaus went to war. Klaus is capable of so much more. Ben can be back in their lives. Vanya has powers, stronger than all of them. Allison may never speak again. Reginald lied to them all more than they ever could have believed. Eudora was dead. They were together again.

It was a lot to take in. That first week back together, the seven siblings were raw. They walked on eggshells around each other, not wanting to cause any more pain to one another. They had spent entirely too long doing that.

Diego woke up three weeks after the almost end of the world in his childhood room. He could hear the soft sounds of his siblings and mom making breakfast downstairs, the smell of bacon wafting its way up into his room. He smiled softly at the domesticity of it all,

“A family, huh?” Diego thought to himself, still unable to fully wrap his head around that concept. There had been so many years of radio silence between the six of them. So many years of pent up feelings and frustrations with one another and their respective situations. Sure, he’d seen Klaus a few times here and there, but the visits were never entirely pleasant. It was either an OD visit, which always ended in tears and unresolved issues, or running into him as he was too out of himself to even remember his own name let alone Diego’s. Yeah, they all still had a lot to unpack.

His stomach growling got himself out of his thoughts; his body is right, these conversations can happen another time. He quickly stretched and started his small morning routine attempting to keep some sort of normalcy in his life. He dropped down to the floor and did 50 push ups, 50 sit ups, and 100 crunches. He took pride in his body and strength, something he always had to work for harder than his siblings. Well, harder than Number One at least.

Once finished and feeling slightly flushed, he washed his face and teeth and threw on the first shirt he saw in his dresser. As he made his way downstairs, the current hot topic of conversation became more clear.

“Klaus we have been over this literally a thousand times. Donuts are both a breakfast food and dessert, not just exclusively breakfast. Nothing that sugary should be qualified as ‘just breakfast’. ” Ben emphasizes, a hint of annoyance in his tone but it’s mostly light, playful banter.

“Benny dear, I hear you, I really do. But why do cops get donuts for breakfast, huh? It’s not dessert breakfast, it’s a breakfast food!”

“Is this conversation entirely necessary this early.” Five deadpans.

“Discourse is always necessary, baby old bro! Oh, Diego!” Klaus waved at him from his seat on the table, literally on the table, with a grin on his face.

Diego waved back, beelining to the pot of coffee. He grabbed himself a plate of waffles and bacon, kissing his mom on the cheek as he did so.

“Children, breakfast is ready! Everyone go on and have a seat, I’ll serve you. I mean in a chair, Klaus. Diego here couldn’t wait another minute though.” Grace teased, winking at her son. He just blushed and sat down with his siblings, sandwiched between Ben and Allison. Ben didn’t need to eat, but he enjoyed spending the mornings with his family regardless.

Grace made her way and placed a plate of food in front of each of her kids, humming along as she did so. “There we are. If you children need anything else, I’ll be doing laundry.”

“Thanks mom!” Klaus called as she left the kitchen, his mouth half full of food.

They all ate in relative silence besides a few comments from Klaus about the food or the weather. Diego was appreciative for the useless banter, not that he’d ever admit it out loud. After everything, Klaus was still Klaus.

“Could you p-pass the syrup V-v-van” Diego cut himself off, mortified. Six heads whipped around to stare at their brother, their faces littered with different degrees of concern. Their brother hadn’t spoken all morning, but that wasn't too unusual. He wasn’t a morning person. This, however, was concerning.

“Hey, hey no it’s okay. Finish your thought, Diego.” Klaus spoke up softly, his tone missing it’s usual sarcasm. Diego clenched his jaw, that statement all too familiar.

A lot of the times his siblings would try to finish the sentence for Diego when he would struggle to vocalize his thoughts properly. Usually Luther, out of annoyance. But Klaus was always the first one to shut his siblings up, insisting they give Diego the agency to finish his own thought. Diego was always grateful for Klaus for that, for never judging him. For being there.

“I d-don’t know w-w-w-why,” Diego let out a frustrated groan, slamming his knife (well, the knife from Grace’s kitchen set) in the table. Allison softly grabbed his wrist, trying to get his fist to uncurl so tightly around the utensil. He met his sisters eyes, filled with nothing but kind, non judgemental compassion.

“It’s okay.” She mouthed, rubbing circles on top of his hand. She never understood what not having control over your voice felt like. It was a privilege, something she always dismissed when they were kids. She felt horrible about how easily she was to pass judgement 15 years ago.

“Diego,” Five started gently, talking almost as if was approaching a feral animal. To be fair, Diego’s temper sometimes made him act like one. “If I may, I believe this may be a residual side effect of the last couple of weeks. Your stutter only comes out now under a heavy amount of distress, correct?”

Diego nodded, his shoulders still hunched. They all noted how he was continuing to curl in on himself, almost fearing the reaction of his siblings. God, had they really been that cruel before?

“Well, all things considered, I’d definitely count the events we’ve experienced as very distressing. Your disability is not your fault, Diego. I had a lot of time to read in the apocalypse. Being alone permits you a lot of free time, you know?” Five looked down, tugging at the end of his sleeve with his hand. He hadn’t talk about what he experienced during the apocalypse much, this vulnerability rare.

“I found a book on speech disorders in the library. It was one of the only ones that survived. I um,” He cleared his throat, “I learned a lot about speech impediments and the underlying neurological causes. It certainly opened my eyes.”

“Why don’t we wait it out and play it by ear,” Five continued, waving his hand in the air. “If it persists, we can help you work on it if you so wish to choose.”

Before Diego could respond, Luther spoke up.

“I don’t want to make the same mistakes I did the first time, Diego. Dad always said that you were lazy, not trying hard enough.” He shifted in his seat, clearly uncomfortable showing this amount of emotion, “But Dad has been wrong about a lot of things. And that was one of them.”

Diego’s mouth gaped open, his brows furrowed in confusion. Luther, the oh so obedient soldier, admitted he was wrong. And that Reginald was wrong. To his face, in front of everyone. This was certainly a new development for their family.

“I appreciate th-that, Luther and F-f-f-” He found himself once again cutting the sentence off, hoping they got the idea. Diego couldn’t help but feel ashamed of his impediment, even after hearing his brothers talk so candidly. Call it years of trauma from Reginald, drilling the thought of his stutter being his fault into his head. He’d been beaten, belittled, and mocked tirelessly for it as a child. Anytime he stumbled over his words, whether it was in front of Eudora or his family, he couldn’t help but feel that stomach dropping anxiety that lingered from his childhood.

“Diego, please. It’s okay. Go on, finish your thought.” Vanya said gently, insisting her brother he was safe to speak.

“Reginald l-l-locked me in the t-t-tank for seven h-hours once a-after I st-stuttered during an interview.” He chuckled lightly, his grip on Allison’s hand tightening ever so slightly, “E-everytime h-he heard me, I’d g-g-get sh-shit for it, you know? S-slapped, w-whipped, mocked. It’s f-fucked.”

The sibling were silent, sitting appalled in their seats as their brother’s story unfolded before them. They knew Reggie wasn’t a fan of his speech, but they didn’t realize he went to such extreme lengths to punish Diego.

“Speech th-therapy h-h-helped. It still should, I know all th-the tr-tricks. M-my trigger l-letters.” He felt himself getting more frustrated as he went on, “I d-don’t know w-w-why they’re not w-working.”

“Hey, we’ll help you figure it out, okay?” Ben reached across the table and pat his hand that was intertwined in Allison’s, relishing in the fact that he could physically comfort his siblings again.

“We have to help Vanya reign in her powers, help Klaus explore his. Helping you with your speech is literally the least of our worries.” Five quipped, his dimple prominent with that shit eating grin on his face.

“My dear Van-Van and I will be the biggest hurdle, my good brother.” Klaus said with pride, clapping triumphantly at his chest. The rest of the family burst into laughter.

“You mean you will be, Klaus.” Ben jested, causing an offended squeal and a blueberry to the face from the dramatic man.

“You wound me! Did I ever tell you guys about the time Benny here convinced me to wax my ass with chocolate pudding? Because let me tell you, it hurt like hell!”

Diego felt himself relax as the topic of conversation shifted to something more light, thankful again for his eccentric brother. He was feeling a lot lighter himself compared to the start of breakfast. He kept having to remind himself that the Hargreeves are not the same people they were a few weeks ago, and thank god for it. He loved his family and they loved him. Things were starting to be okay.

The Price of Sex in Amsterdam

One of the topics that we explore extensively in my sex and culture course in Amsterdam is sex work. As part of this course, I give my students the opportunity to speak with current and former sex workers about their experiences in the industry and, not surprisingly, one of the topics that always comes up is money.

What exactly is the price of sex in Amsterdam?

Before we answer that, it’s worth noting that prostitution is legal and government regulated in the Netherlands. However, this isn’t to say that all sex work that occurs in the Netherlands is legal. In order for it to be legal, it must operate within the confines of the law.

So, for example, someone running a brothel would need to secure the necessary license/permit from the government, pay taxes, and comply with all regulations. In other words, there are a lot of hoops to jump through—and, as a result, this had led to the emergence of a sex work shadow industry that operates outside of the law. In fact, some believe that this shadow industry is many times larger than the legalized industry.

How things work in the shadow industry in terms of pricing, we don’t really have a good sense of. So what we’re talking about in this post is sex work that occurs within the legal framework in the Netherlands.

Based on what several workers have told me, there seems to be a pretty standard going rate in the Red Light District, where (usually) scantily clad workers stand behind floor-to-ceiling windows and beckon potential customers as they walk by. That rate is 50 Euro (or about $60 USD) for 15-20 minutes. However, this only applies to what many workers refer to as “basic sex” (their phrase, not mine), meaning penis-in-vagina intercourse.

Of course, you can negotiate to do more or to stay longer, but only if you’re willing to pay extra. So, for example, if you have kinks or fetishes, you want kissing, you have a spouse/partner who wants to watch or participate, or you want something else beyond intercourse, that’s all individually negotiated and added to the price. However, workers have the freedom to decide whether they want to indulge your requests, and most workers I’ve spoken with have said they have firm limits on what they will and won’t do (for example, ‘no anal’ is the most common limit I’ve heard). So it’s not the case that money can buy whatever you want.

Pricing works differently outside of the Red Light District—and it really depends on the venue in which sex is being sold. For example, I spoke with a woman who formerly worked in a high-end gentleman’s club in a residential area outside the city center. Who among us has not heard of (or – dare I ask? – received) a happy ending? It’s been joked about in popular culture for years, and it has become so ingrained in our collective consciousness that massage parlors with curtains over the windows and secretive back rooms are almost always assumed – rightly or wrongly – to provide other “services.” A few years ago, when I won a fantasy sports league, someone joked that I should spend my winnings at an establishment that online reviewers have deemed one of the best “rub & tug” places in New York City. If the person suggesting it had ever been I will not here speculate, but I’m sure he thought it less an honest suggestion than an innocent joke. As distasteful as the suggestion was, he was playing on a widely-known (and seemingly harmless) open secret.

Certainly, with the release of said documentary, the pendulum appears to swing more towards the latter. There have now been myriad credible accusations about Jackson, and a newly resurfaced tape of his sister LaToya (from all the way back in 1993) shows her denouncing “his crimes against small, innocent children” (though she later recanted the statements).

While Jackson was alive, how many of us gave serious thought to whether he was acting inappropriately? Yes, he settled a case out of court in the 90s and was brought up on charges once (as was our friend Jeffrey Epstein, whom I’ll address shortly), but he skated. We, the public, continued to listen to his music and disregard his behavior. Certainly no one dared to raise this open secret to the level of moral outrage for many years… but, in so doing, what did we enable?

In not examining these open secrets in the court of public opinion and demanding full investigations, what else have we allowed to happen? As #metoo has shown us, we’ve permitted workplace sexual harassment and assault for generations. We’ve enabled human trafficking by reducing it to a joke. We’ve allowed powerful people – usually men – to live lives free from consequence, and even bestowed upon them a certain fear-based gravitas; no one dared cross Harvey Weinstein or Les Moonves, lest their careers be torpedoed, despite the fact that (at least in the case of the former) his culture of intimidation and abuse was a Hollywood-sized open secret.

It’s something we’re slowly confronting, but it will take time. And calling people to the carpet for using sex to gain power or hurt others is – however uncomfortable – part of that confrontation.

If it isn’t already, allow me to make plain the fundamental purpose of this column: Think about your open secrets- our open secrets. Think, as I have tried to do after the above instances have exploded into national discussions, about those things that we all know to be true but that nobody ever talks about. I’m not advocating for “witch hunts” – there’s been quite enough talk of those lately – but of mere explorations of the obvious. I can think of several as-yet unexamined cases off the top of my head. The first, to shift from the from the titillating to the mundane, is the problem of tax havens. Does anybody still talk about the Panama Papers or the Paradise Papers? Or about how a journalist who helped to uncover them was mysteriously killed by a car bomb in Malta? I actually heard someone make the argument recently that if the United States raises tax rates on the wealthy, our modern-day robber barons will simply hide more money offshore. That’s the same fundamental (and asinine) assertion as, “We can’t have tighter gun restrictions, because criminals will still find a way to get them.” The solution, to people who advance these viewpoints, is inaction. They are content living, as we have for years, with our open secrets. They imagine that the above instances (the easy reducibility of gun violence being its own open secret) do not affect them. But what if their family members were killed with legal guns? Or if they were deprived of necessary social services because of haven-driven deficits? Would they be so quick to brush these important issues under the rug, pretending they don’t know what they know that they know?

For most people, the rate at which our planet is warming is the biggest, smelliest, most egregious open secret… on the planet. Thankfully, the debate over whether or not climate change is occurring (and man-made) seems to be evaporating, as more of those who’ve stuck their heads in the hot, hot sand pass away. But the question of how best to take action remains. For all her foibles, it was not until Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez used her considerable platform to advance a Green New Deal that Americans actually started considering the sweeping, necessary policy changes that might help alleviate some of the inevitable suffering we are poised to face in the coming years. Even those who distrust the Green New Deal’s ambitious aims of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 know that they need to support something. We all need to support something… or else we’ll keep our biggest elephant in the room well-fed, kicking the can down the road until some major Kraft-like climate event occurs… and by then it might be too late.

Doping in cycling, Hollywood accounting, soda, the Washington Redskins (and Cleveland Indians), college admissions, Scientology, Donald Trump’s mental health… these and many other subjects qualify for official Open Secret status. What do they all have in common? They have had moments of exposure, here and there, but remain – in some cases, dangerously – unresolved.

What will it take for us as a nation (and a world) to shed enough sunlight on these matters to melt them away? Two things: courage and awareness. One follows the other- it takes courage to be aware enough to confront these behaviors and the circumstances that allow them to thrive, and yet another level to hold those in power accountable. First, however, we must confront our own complicity. In this increasingly Orwellian world, we would do well to remember the author’s iconic words from 1984: “If you want to keep a secret, you must also hide it from yourself.”

ADDENDUM: Concerning Epstein

As a millennial, I had always heard the name Jeffrey Epstein. Often, it was used as either a political bludgeon or evidence of the Illuminati. When I wrote this column back in March, I had little hope that Epstein would finally be brought up on charges relating to his systematic predatory behavior against scores of young women, and that those charges would (possibly) open the door for many more against those who may have aided, abetted, and willingly joined in his behavior. Epstein’s case fits the mold perfectly: A wealthy man who thinks he’s above the law, surely because he has been. Much has been made about the sweetheart deal former Trump cabinet member Alex Acosta gave Epstein in 2008, and with good reason. Epstein’s predilections were long known, as the following excerpt makes plain, and yet… and yet. No one, especially those in a position to expose his behavior, dared do so. It is in these circumstances where, yet again, the public is duty bound to step in. I know we have a lot to worry about – climate change, income inequality, superbugs – but none of that is going away. Cases like Kraft’s, Jackson’s, and Epstein’s are the easy ones. In a world of increasing abstraction, where things seem increasingly complicated, we must see the simple for what it is, and act accordingly.

How could this have gone on and on? Why so much silence for so many years? Why did no one tip off the authorities or issue any but what must have been the most whispery warnings to close personal friends about Epstein’s pyramid-scheme approach to abusing an apparently infinite number of teenage girls? That Bill Clinton and Trump might play dumb is understandable, if reprehensible. But Larry Summers? Alan Dershowitz? Leslie Wexner, Bill Barr, Ken Starr (!); journalists Katie Couric and George Stephanopoulos; Eva Andersson-Dubin, who founded Mount Sinai’s breast-cancer center? Not to mention their spouses and partners and the people who manage their calendars and the Harvard finance men and women accepting his millions? The whistle-blowers in the Epstein case have not been the high and mighty who can afford to hire lawyers and publicists but the victims themselves, and their families, evoking nothing more than the Catholic Church sex-abuse cases, in which grandmas and aunts spent decades writing letters and knocking fruitlessly on bishops’ doors. “What is so amazing to me is how his entire social circle knew about this and just blithely overlooked it,” says Vicki Ward, the reporter whose 2003 discovery of Epstein’s abuses she alleges were scrubbed by Vanity Fair’s then editor, Graydon Carter. Everyone who knew Epstein mentioned “the girls,” Ward told the New York Times, “but as an aside.”

You want to explore the best backpacking in America’s desert Southwest, but you’re not sure where to begin, or how some of these trips you’ve read about compare for scenery and difficulty. You’ve heard about the need to carry huge loads of water, and environmental challenges like dangerous heat, rugged terrain, flash floods and even (gulp) quicksand. Or maybe you’ve taken one or two backpacking trips there and now you’re hungry for another one and seeking ideas for where to go next.

Well, I gotcha covered. The five trips described in this story comprise what might be called a Southwest Backpacking Starter Package. They are all beginner- and family-friendly in terms of trail or route quality, access, and navigability, and some have good water availability. But most importantly, regardless of their relative ease logistically, they all deliver the goods on the kind of adventure and scenery you go to the Southwest hoping to find.

I present them in no particular order of priority; in reality, competition for a backcountry permit will dictate when you’re able to take the most-popular ones, such as those in the Grand Canyon, Zion, and Canyonlands—and those are trips you need to plan up to four or five months in advance to get a permit reservation for the prime seasons of spring and fall. So many writers (including me) and other people have written and said so much about the Grand Canyon that it’s hard to find words that sound unique and inspiring to describe it. You won’t encounter that problem when actually going there, though—every hike is unique and inspiring. But the very aspects of the GC that make it such a unique place—its severe topography and aridity—also ramp up the difficulty of any multi-day hike into the canyon.

That’s precisely why the park manages its “corridor” trails—the Bright Angel and South and North Kaibab trails—to accommodate backpackers (and dayhikers) will little to no experience hiking there. Those well-maintained trails have established campgrounds and relatively frequent, reliable water sources, and offer a variety of route options, including a loop from the South Rim to the Colorado River and a full traverse of the canyon.

Zion may lack the extensive trail network found in parks like Grand Canyon, Glacier, or Yosemite, but it does harbor a classic backpacking trip widely recognized as one of America’s best—The Narrows (described below)—and other trails that compete with it for I-can’t-believe-my-eyes panoramas. Sheer red walls towering above the vibrant, green forest, plus easy hiking and the perennial La Verkin Creek made the Kolob Canyons an enjoyable overnight hike for my family when our kids were nine and six.

Our overnight on the West Rim Trail on the same trip was a bit harder—and we had to carry extra water—but within our kids’ abilities; and the views from the West Rim of Zion Canyon and the maze of canyons and white-walled mesas dicing up the Zion backcountry look like something from another planet. Road access to both areas of Zion, and local shuttle services, allow for short overnight hikes or longer outings that are ideal for beginners.

The more ambitious can make a north-south traverse from the Lee Pass Trailhead in the Kolob Canyons to either Zion Canyon or across Zion to the East Entrance Trailhead—the distance ranging from roughly 40 to 50 miles, depending on how many side hikes one takes (such as the incomparable Zion must-do, Angels Landing).

Multi-colored candlesticks of Cedar sandstone stand 300 feet tall, appearing ready to topple over with bulbous crowns wider than their base. Waves of rock ripple into the distance, looking like a petrified, burnt-red ocean. Stratified cliffs stretch for miles. The Needles District of Canyonlands National Park holds the kind of geological formations that fascinate both kids and adults. It also has over 60 miles of trails zigzagging over a high plateau spliced by canyons.

But unlike big, deep canyons, most trails here don’t involve much elevation gain and loss; and while water is scarce, you don’t have to hike great distances to reach backcountry campsites and explore; and established trails to Chesler Park, Big Spring, Squaw, and Lost canyons, and the Peekaboo Trail are easy to follow.

On a three-day, roughly 15-mile backpacking trip through southern Utah’s Coyote Gulch, my family and another hiked across ancient dunes hardened to rock; squeezed through a claustrophobically tight, 100-foot-long slot called Crack-in-the-Wall (not as hard as it sounds and quite fun); and stood atop a cliff overlooking a vast landscape of redrock towers and cliffs, including Stevens Arch, measuring some 220 feet across and 160 feet tall. And that was just in the first hour.

With its short distance, perennial stream, and lack of flash-flood hazard, Coyote Gulch ranks as one of the Southwest’s most beginner-and family-friendly backpacking trips. But that description, while true, almost diminishes the raw beauty of a hike that features a natural bridge, two of the region’s most distinctive natural arches—and one deeply overhung cliff with amazing echo acoustics. In many ways, Coyote delivers a complete canyon-hiking experience—without the common hardships and hazards.

No surprise that Zion’s Narrows is one of the most sought-after backcountry permits in the National Park System. With sandstone walls that rise up to a thousand feet tall, the Narrows of the North Fork of the Virgin River in Zion squeezes down to just 20 to 30 feet across in places. On this 16-mile, two-day hike, you’ll walk in the river most of the time—with the water coming up to thighs and hips in places—marveling at the constantly changing, towering walls, and oddities like a waterfall pouring from solid rock, creating an oasis of greenery clinging to a cliff.

I don’t want to understate the challenge—and it may not be a good choice for complete novices or young kids. Despite it being a very gradual descent for its entire distance, the Narrows can feel surprisingly strenuous because you’re walking much of the time on riverbed cobbles and in water. The water and air temperature vary seasonally, and it can feel cool or downright cold, which saps energy over several hours. And there’s certainly flash-flood danger—don’t go without a forecast for sunny skies—but the park also closes the Narrows at times of flood hazard. Still, this is one classic hike to get to whenever you can.

When Caroline Harper suddenly found herself jobless in her mid-40s, she decided to step off the corporate ladder and travel to all the places she’d always wanted to go, from Antarctica to Egypt. Here’s how it changed her life — and her career.

Caroline Harper loved her work negotiating big contracts in the oil and gas industry. “I liked the almost Games of Thrones strategic feel of it,” she says. “You’d stay up for three nights in a row and do the difficult work at 3 AM on that last day. It was a stamina test, an intellectual sparring match with the other side. It was very exciting.”

But in February 2002, Harper’s company sold the part of the business that she’d built and run. “I was made redundant,” she says.

She was in her mid-40s and could have used her connections to find a similar role at a different company. Or, because she was lucky enough to receive a good severance package, she could have taken time off to sit on a beach. Instead, she did something less expected. “I’d worked all my life and never did a student gap year,” says Harper. “I thought, ‘I’m going to go see a bit of the world.’” But she planned to do her gap year in two parts: she’d travel for six months, return to the UK, work as a consultant for a while, and take off for another six months of adventures.

Harper had an extra motivation to seize the chance to travel. Both of her parents had passed away relatively young — her father at age 64 and her mother at 56. “They’d both hoped that when they retired, they’d go off into the world and do all these things. And they didn’t get there,” says Harper. “I had money and time — usually you have one or the other. So I thought, ‘I’ve got an opportunity to do it now, when I’m healthy and I don’t have any dependents. Why not?’”

The time spent traveling was transformative for Harper. In fact, it led to her leaving the corporate world altogether and joining a nonprofit, Sightsavers, which works to end preventable blindness around the world and promote the rights of people with visual impairment. Below are six reasons she believes, if circumstances permit, we should all consider a midlife gap year.

You’ll get to see all the places you always dreamed of.

It didn’t take Harper long to make her itinerary. She used a simple question to guide her: What places had sparked her imagination over the years? Her list tended toward natural wonders and archaeological treasures — Machu Picchu in Peru, a cruise down the Amazon, the Galápagos Islands, Egypt, a trip to China to see the Forbidden City in Beijing and the terra cotta warriors in Xi’an. Her favorite stop? Three weeks in Antarctica, retracing the path that explorer Ernest Shackleton had taken from 1914 to 1916. “It was just beautiful — the penguins, the seals, the whales. It’s just genuine wilderness,” says Harper. “There was a hurricane at one point, and we had to hide behind an iceberg. We were in this big research vessel with sonar and GPS, but even then, it was quite scary. I kept imagining, What was this like in a rowboat? What was it like to lead people through this?” It was a humbling experience that helped jolt her out of the status quo.

Harper knew what made her so good at her corporate job: her knowledge of physics and energy use, her ability to understand legalese, and her aptitude for high-pressure negotiations. In traveling, she began noticing softer skills she’d never thought much about before. “I discovered that I’m quite good with sorting out logistics when things go wrong,” she says. “I also discovered that I was fascinated by more things than I thought I was. My career had been entirely focused on the UK, which had never bothered me. But I realized then that my world was way too narrow. I wanted to be more international.” Harper found she was surprisingly good at connecting with people. “I could talk to villagers in the middle of Pakistan the way I could talk to presidents of companies,” she said. She wasn’t sure what all of this added up to, career-wise, but she knew she wanted to find something that could tap these newly identified skills.

You’ll see things that will make you want to take action.

Harper found further clarity in some of the most heartbreaking moments of her travels, such as seeing people with leprosy begging on the side of the road in China. “You see these things on documentaries, but it’s just not the same as seeing people there in front of you,” she says. “You realize what a large proportion of the world doesn’t live the way we do [in wealthy countries]. That had a big impact on me.” She realized she wanted to do something that would help people, and not just lead to bigger profits.

After Harper’s father passed away, she had gone to the library to return books that he’d borrowed. When she opened them, she noticed the type was incredibly large — while she’d known he was losing his eyesight due to diabetes, his vision loss was worse than she thought. Her uncle had also experienced blindness — after taking a drug to treat arthritis when he was in his 50s, his retinas detached and he could no longer see. Harper saw how this affected both men. “With my father, it was a loss of independence that led to depression,” she says. “And I saw the impact it had on the marriage between my uncle and aunt — she turned from being a wife to being a caregiver. There just weren’t a lot of services available at the time. Many people back then assumed blindness was the end.”

Harper herself is very short-sighted and is fully reliant on glasses and contact lenses. “I can’t see the big letters on the top of the optometrist’s board without them,” she says. But she’d never actually connected the dots between all these experiences until she opened up The Sunday Times in late 2004 — toward the end of her two-part gap year — and saw that a UK-based nonprofit called Sightsavers was advertising for a new CEO. “When I saw the ad, I thought, That’s me,” she says. “I want to do that.”

Over the course of her travels, Harper had begun to suspect that she wanted to work at a nonprofit. She applied to a few such positions and reached out to headhunters she’d worked with in the past about finding this kind of role. They were not encouraging. “One even said, ‘You’re too old to make a career switch,’” Harper recalls.

But she decided to go ahead and apply for the CEO position at Sightsavers. She felt it was a role that would benefit from her business acumen and from her abilities to work with logistics and to talk to anyone. And it was exactly the kind of job she knew she wanted — international, purpose-driven, and related to a cause that she cared deeply about. After a series of interviews with trustees and with the outgoing CEO, Harper was offered the job. She started there in April 2005 and instantly loved it.

“When I first told people I was joining Sightsavers, the guys in the corporate world were all, ‘Oh my god, why are you going into the charity sector? It’s all sandal-wearers and people eating oats. You’ll hate it,’” Harper says. “But in the charity sector, it was, ‘Oh my god, how have they hired a corporate woman? She’ll be evil and money-grubbing.’” After making her career transition, she realized how wrong both sectors’ impressions of the other were. “Things are not as different as everybody says,” she says. “People are people in both sectors — they like to support one another and have success. The only difference is the end product: is it that you made profits, or that you restored people’s sight?”

You’ll realize that there’s no time limit on trying something new.

During her 13 years (and counting) as CEO at Sightsavers, Harper has focused on expanding the organization’s reach. Sightsavers now works in more than 30 countries, and among other goals, it has resolved to take on trachoma — an intensely debilitating but curable eye disease — with the support of TED’s The Audacious Project. Harper believes we can end trachoma, which has been blinding people for thousands of years, within our lifetimes.

Even though her gap year was well over a decade ago, those experiences may send her in new directions yet. When Harper was five years old, she remembers, she and her family went to see Tutankhamun’s treasures at the British Museum. “I queued for hours and hours to see them,” she says. “I was utterly blown away.” That led her to visit Egypt during her travels. “It still captures my imagination,” she adds. “I’m wondering, when I leave Sightsavers at some point in the future, whether I’ll go back and do a degree in archaeology.” Harper is no longer scared of making such a big change.

Perhaps that’s the most important reason for a midlife gap year if you can, Harper says — while you may think that your days of taking bold choices are behind you, you’ll see that it just isn’t true. “The personal situation has to fit, and that can be very difficult,” says Harper. “But the advice I give people is, ‘Don’t feel like your life has to follow a predetermined path.’ Employers don’t expect you to have a tram-line CV.”

Harper believes that her gap year helped her author her own fate rather than just react to what happened to her. “Taking it helped me not to rush decisions,” she says. “If I had rushed, I probably would have gone back into the private sector. I might have earned more money, but I just wouldn’t enjoy my life as much.”
