I’m trying to find a way to parse this but like:

Make up culture is bad because of how capitalism has twisted appearance to be a basis of worth and social value. However, humans have been putting stuff on their skin since our ancestors started losing hair (maybe even before?) and ornamentation does have significant historic cultural value outside of modern late-capitalism induced self loathing.

Like. Make-up is not a thing in my immediate family. My mother and older sister? Nothing. My little sister is going to be so lucky to grow up in a space where she won’t have any expectation or support for make-up culture. I know make-up culture a shitty phenomenon; I know it steals time and money and self-worth from people at its worst and at its best feeds back into an appearance based cultural hierarchy.

But. But. There is such a rich and vibrant history to cosmetics outside of what is sold to reinforce that inevitably toxic culture. So many forms of art in face paint and more permanent and interesting body modification! There’s history and traceable evolving styles and intentions! And it fucking sucks that it’s been so corrupted to the point of no longer reflecting it’s original intent of being creative and unique and interesting!

Sometimes it just sounds like ‘don’t have tattoos don’t you know those annoying punks and degenerates have those?’ has just been repackaged as ‘don’t wear make-up don’t you know those annoying preps and conformists do that?’ Like I get what you’re trying to say but there is nuance to these conversations and willfully ignoring that nuance makes you sound ridiculous at best and outright hostile to any deviation from your standards at worst.

idk if any of my followers (or just people who happen to stumble across this post) happen to be romani, but I had a quick question:

I'm thinking about making the main character of my novel a romani woman (or this universes rough equivalent). I'm not planning to delve into racism or really include it within my universe aside from a mention or two, but there is another form of more fantastical discrimination she is subject to. basic summary is that everyone in this world has an animal companion of sorts, and the mcs in particular is a fox. there are lots of stereotypes associated with different animals, and foxes in particular tend to be associated with thievery, betrayal, greed, and selfishness, which I'm aware are also common stereotypes about the romani population.

there are people with fox companions who aren't analogous to the romani, and people within the mcs community who don't have foxes and even hold prejudice against them. additionally, the stereotypes are not based in fact and proven wrong on numerous occasions.

I didn't decide to make the main character romani until recently, and realised shortly after that the stereotypes associated with her type of magic and romani people were very similar. and that it might be offensive or disheartening to my romani readers to see a character who doesn't experience racial prejudice but still faces similar discrimination and stereotyping for something else out of her control. I am especially worried that this offense will outweigh the potential romani readers who would feel seen and represented by this character, as providing representation of all kinds is incredibly important to me.

TLDR: Followers of mine who are POC (particularly Romani but all input is welcome), would it be offensive to portray a Romani character as experiencing prejudice similar to stereotypes around the Roma today for magical, fantasy related reasons rather than racial ones?

I’ve long since resigned myself to being the only person in the fandom who truly believes that Eöl is an unreliable narrator and should not be considered an accurate source regarding the realities of Noldorin settlement in Beleriand, but it is disappointing to see people I otherwise agree with pointing to his sentiments as if they are some sort of trustworthy source.

Eöl accuses the Noldor, more than once, of doing things that they did not do, and completely ignores that they settled in Beleriand by express permission of Thingol and respected his laws. his representation of Noldorin behavior is in direct contradiction to what the text says the people he’s discussing actually did, and as a result his entire anticolonial position is suspect. this could be argued to be some kind of commentary by the author on painting indigenous people as stupid or incapable of understanding what’s going on, but the fannish discussion I’ve seen about Eöl completely ignores the fact that what he says happened and what actually happened are two different things, instead painting him as a sort of noble dissenting voice speaking truth to power. the problem is he’s not that, at all, and his inability to accurately critique what the Noldor are doing (and what they did vs. what they would have initially tried to do) means that I can’t take him seriously, which is another layer in the complicated mess of reasons why I hate him as a character but I hate the conversations surrounding him much, much more.
