#making another nonsense post (it's my blog; i'll do what i want) #(but i'm at least keeping this confined to the tags. you're welcome) #i just think. there's a joke to be made #about yuu being hikaru and yuna's daughter #(irt the similarities between the three of them -- #she's an ungulate; extremely loyal and bloodies her hands blindly for another girl; just like hikaru #extremely off-putting with a very similar horn to yuna's #and her color palette isn't yellow anymore but her original sprite's was) #she and hikaru even have similar hair colors #i just don't know if i'm strong enough to make that joke. but it's a very funny thought (to me) #i call her an ungulate because i know she's an equine like hikaru. but i'm starting to become infected with the giraffe!yuu virus #that's all of my disjointed rambling for tonight #oh; happy werewolf wednesday

Yuu is most obviously themed around a unicorn, but I think you could compare her to a kelpie, too.

The kelpie usually takes the form of a grey, black, or white horse standing near a body of water, and acts sweet and even-tempered to lull people into riding or petting it. But once they do, they find themselves stuck to its fur or ensnared by its mane. With its victim unable to escape, the kelpie takes to the water, diving into the abyss to drown and devour them.

The kelpie's behavior fits with how pre-contract Yuu saw herself as a twisted, deceitful person who was only pretending to be kind, and how she used to have (somewhat unwanted) thoughts about dragging Kei down into the depths with her, away from everything else. And much like how kelpies bind themselves to their riders to drown them, Yuu and Kei tied themselves together with a ribbon before throwing themselves into the sea-- with Yuu, the "kelpie", being the only one to come out of the water alive.

It could be a coincidence, but I thought it was neat anyway! 🐴 Giving Yuu an equine-themed outfit and doppel was an excellent choice from a thematic perspective.

i really love the idea of hikaru using her little smoke-puff soldiers in everyday life, like to help her with trivial tasks or chores, or other menial activities. they have little hands to carry their sabers with, so surely they can use them to be helpful outside of battle.

hikaru can use them in a sort of 'assembly line' while washing the dishes to make the whole ordeal easier. or, she can clean her room and have them each tidy up different parts, so that it gets done much quicker.

she can even have them help her to woo yuna and stack on top of each other to offer her flowers (they get too overexcited around yuna and the soldier-tower falls in its buzz of excitement before yuna can take the flowers from them, to hikaru's embarrassment)

the fact that hikaru often gets reduced in the fandom to nothing more than 'horse' jokes is something that's always stuck with me. it's a bit ironic, in a sad kind of way.

hikaru being 'the horse' isn't just some joke thrown in for laughs -- it's her coping mechanism; the way that she dehumanizes herself and creates a mental disconnect to separate herself from the things she does, and to place herself in the role of being a tool for yuna's use. hikaru may not necessarily want to kill people for promised blood's goals, but if yuna wants it, then the horse certainly does, can, and will.

it's not as great of a coping mechanism as she believes it to be -- it certainly does get her through the harder parts of life as a futatsugi magical girl, and it's become something of a personal playful nickname among the ranks of promised blood -- but it's textbook dehumanization. she's not thinking of herself as a human being, but instead as an animal, as a tool, a weapon. she cheerfully agrees when ao calls her an empty shell, grinning and chirping back that with yuna-san, she's full.

everything hikaru -- the horse -- does is for yuna. she's not her own person; she's not a person at all. yuna-san is promised blood's general, and a general needs her loyal horse. the horse won't need to feel guilty for the blood on her hands and at the tip of her saber at the end of the day. she was made to do this. she is not her own person; she's not a person at all.

all of this to say -- hikaru's character being turned into 'horse' jokes by a lot of the fandom is something i think about a normal amount.

I'm not sure if this is intentional or a coincidence, but Ao's scarf looks like the black marking around the banded sea krait's neck and face! It fits her either way-- despite their potent venom, these snakes are quite timid and rarely ever bite humans, even when provoked.

I like the idea of Kagome having a crush on someone and using ventriloquism to make Aru-chan say "My friend Kagome-chan was wondering if you'd like to go on a date with her?" because she's too nervous to ask them directly...

... but I also like the idea that since Aru-chan becomes sapient when Kagome transforms, she could totally just put Kagome on blast by going "Hey! Guess what! Kagome-chan thinks you're cute!" out of her own free will. Betrayed by a talking plushie.
