But being in love with George is so, so hard.

The constant grating of metal, the jarring sound of chalk on a chalkboard. The love that Dream holds for George collides with the love George holds for Dream; they do not mix, do not match.

Because George loves him; Dream knows this. George loves through the letters of handwritten sticky notes, the making of two smoothies instead of one, the pile of trinkets collected on his desk. George loves Dream like he loves Sapnap, and Karl, and so, so many more.

But he is not in love with Dream.

And that’s okay.

It’s okay because Dream’s already been given so much. The life he has forged is the life he only ever imagined having before. He can hangout with his friends in public, go to any event he wants to, can stream and laugh and go bug someone in the room next door.

He can even have George; he can touch his shoulders, mess with his hair, fight him in the kitchen anytime he wishes.

But he can’t kiss George’s freckles. He can’t intertwine their fingers, can’t look at him too long off-camera, can’t grab his waist from behind, can’t tuck his head into his shoulder, can’t whisper endearments into his ear, can’t fall into George’s bed at night, can’t say ‘I love you’ with too much feeling, can’t really mean what he jokes about. Can’t, can’t, can’t.

Dream can’t do this anymore.

Certain characters just attract those types of fans, huh? I feel like everybody who's been in fandom spaces long enough has seen the one.

You know, the one who will hear/see a mention that actually, someone doesn't like their fave and will just... spiral. Like, post several long-winded and weirdly incely rants detailing how their favourite character is an amazing person and thus you OWE him love (side-eye), and if you don't think he's a good person you just don't understand him, and... wait, maybe there's just something wrong with you? Because not liking my husbando is a huge red flag. Are you a bully? Are you emotionally stunted?

And I'm not even gonna start on "character a good person = must love character", because that's just not how it works. But the kicker is, those characters usually aren't even good people, so the "point" is invalid anyway.
