Black faces. White spaces. . . . 🤎🖤✊🏾✊🏿 . As much as I try to be strong and work double time to make sure that I amplify my Black voice in spaces without BIPOC representation, my throat hurts today. The vocal strain of defending and educating all-white spaces about the importance of representation, inclusivity, and creating safe spaces where people feel they belong has put long-term stress and pressure on these vocal chords. My throat is tight and constricted. I’m deeply hurt by being pushed aside and pushed out because I am a triple minority in my previous male, white, british space. . The constant requirement to work in psychologically and physically unsafe white spaces weighs heavy on me. There are so many days where I wake up tired from the fight that hasn’t even begun. I know this is not normal and have to remind myself daily that there are safe, inclusive, respectful workplaces that truly celebrate diversity and champion the beauty of representation. Someday I hope to again work at one of those organizations. I’ve been fortunate to have worked at two: @brightscope_inc and @flow_kana. Maybe that’s enough for one lifetime.
