a very official and unserious ranking of chinese mini-dramas I've watched. Mini-drama = 5-15 min episodes. Color coded "sets" that had same actor or writer.

1. Night of Love with You (2022) - the unbeatable. the ULTIMATE. villain 4 villain romance with a protagonist who knows she is in a manga series... but something has gone wrong, because how did she and the heroic female lead get switched this time?!

2. Provoke (2023) - Republican era noir revenge saga. Unresolved sexual tension. Glamour. Great lighting. Hot people in period costume giving VIBES. She married her mortal enemy as a concubine and keeps a murderboard. I'm in love w her.

3. The Deliberations of Love (2023) - Married consort of a prince dies with him due to the struggle for the throne. Then she wakes up in the past, only for this ambitious idiot to get them killed again! Receiving yet another chance after 2 awful deaths, she's determined to choose life over love and not marry into the royal family again. But it's not quite so simple... especially when the prince starts to feel echoes of their past life together. The romantic chemistry is what sells this lil tropey drama. She keeps subconsciously drifting back into acting like his familiar spouse and then he starts vibing too.

4. A Familiar Stranger (2022) - Like with Provoke, I think everyone's seen this one? Conniving prime ministers daughter face-switches an innocent girl who is searching for her sister and pining away for this hot general who saved her once. Wow what luck, the horrible marriage the prime minister's daughter wanted to escape is with her dream man. This all sounds very wtf but this director x screenwriter combo creates these moody pieces that have a certain dream logic.

5. Zhang Gong Zhu Zai Shong (2022) - The emperor's sister is tyrannical and keeps a stable of hot men. Political intrigue ensues. ngl this one is real choppy but is ranked high due to my bias for achingly hot leading ladies who step on a breathless delicate ML. 🔥 She makes me SWEAT.

6. The Killer is Also Romantic (2022) - Mr and Mrs Smith in costume drama imperial era china. It should be higher, but for an English speaker it's dragged down the list by terrible subs.

7. My Decoy Bride (2023) - Hidden identities, assassin marries her target in imperial era china. Same male actor as Deliberations of Love who builds good energy with his costars. But less budget, worse subs, choppy editing. Still fun. Probably ranked way too high but idc I was entertained.

8. Dong Lan Xue (2023) - 3 min episodes of broken Murder Couple ❤. The slighted 7th prince and his ex-prostitute maid who are out for blood & revenge. (It's that badass lady & her delicate suitor again. Love this webisode pair. love herrrrrrrrr)

9. Miss Mystery (2023) - Republican era revenge drama in a similar vein as Provoke but lacking it's elite lighting, sets, & cinematography. To her it's Fake Marriage but he agrees because he liiiiikes her. The couple has chemistry, gives good power-couple, and the FL is out for bloody revenge. It's a fun ride. But the writing isn't as strong as Provoke and the uneven acting of the supporting cast drags it down the list.

10. What's Wrong with My Princess (2023) - The standard reborn revenge tale played straight. Female general helped a prince fight for the throne, then he & her sister have her murdered when vulnerable and pregnant. Gasp! She wakes up years earlier on her wedding day to this other prince she'd married once, only to kill for her evil lover boy. Now she plots the downfall of lover boy & her sis, joining hands with the husband she betrayed the 1st time around. It's... exactly what it sounds like lol. Nothing stands out and the script is a string of tropes. But it delivers exactly what it promises.

11. Everlasting Bride (2023) - Republican era revenge with added spy games. Like Miss Mystery & Provoke, strong character intros & first meeting. They're mysterious and well-dressed and dangerous to know. More polished than Miss Mystery. The leads here are more filtered and more conventionally attractive. But I have to admit that there's a charm about how rough around the edges Miss Mystery is. And I like the lead actress in Miss Mystery a lot more. The first 3rd is pretty fire, then it lost steam for me.

12. Forever Love (2023) - It's that smoldering guy from Maid's Revenge (absent from this list because due to crap ending). Absolutely extra in every way, a tropey hormonal mess, to the point one can argue it circles back around to be ART. Female protagonists for 1-10 are all great & fun. Alas I can't say the same for #12. 💀

Haven't Finished:

Butterfly Lover (2023) - I have a serious hate for open-endings and I heard this has one, so I paused on it. It's from that amazing director&screenwriter combo, though (Provoke, Familiar Stranger, Killer is also Romantic...). So I know it's worth watching.

Romantic aka Love Strikes Back (2023) - I started this but stalled out. idk it wasn't compulsively watchable for me. Other people loved it.

The short answer is no, but the long answer is I don't believe they'd make good fathers or parental role models whatsoever, it sounds harsh but it is true. The saying ‘the abused become the abusers’ is applicable in this situation, but I genuinely believe there is more to it. 

They are way past the line of decency. Every single one of them is a narcissist that has self-destructive tendencies that simply wouldn't be suitable around a child.

I mean they are horrible people borderline, forgetting their past. Some of the things they've done to yui are heinous, now imagine if she is the ‘fl’ meaning they probably had to treat her better than the other brides; what on earth do the other brides go through?

Thousands maybe hundreds of thousands of women were assaulted, manipulated, psychologically tortured, humiliated, mutilated and hung up as trophies in wedding dresses for centuries in 6 horrific ways. 

As a child, imagine finding out what your parents were doing, imagine the amount of heartbreak at watching them treat your mother that way if she even lives that long, as a child who was very much exposed to narcissistic parenting for a large part of my childhood. They don't change, they want to live through you. The Sakamaki family isn't a family anyone should have to be born into.

I can’t fully summarise it so I’ll make a little list per diaboy to what I believe is the most realistic perspective of them as parents.

New Life Begins: Li family costume appreciation

DISCLAIMER:

I am not Chinese by nationality nor ethnicity, nor have I received any formal education on Chinese culture and history. Therefore my observations may be erroneous and I'd be grateful for any correction offered by a more knowledgeable party!

Period dramas are not meant to be 100% accurate representation of historical details. Some dramas may attempt to have some semblance of reenactment, in which case it would simply be a bonus. Especially ahistorical fusion dramas will attempt more modified takes on historical wardrobes, sometimes mish-mash pieces with elements from multiple dynasties. So take everything here with a grain of salt.

The wardrobe of New Life Begins, for the most part gave me a vague Song Dynasty inspired aesthetic. If you followed this drama faithfully you may have noticed that it had gone an extra mile with its worldbuilding details, where there are 9 provinces that would remind you of real provinces of China due to their placements and unique characteristics. I did a post about that here.

There I said, the FL Li Wei's home province Jichuan, makes me think of Yunnan- adjacent area because it is described as mountainous and well-suited for farming, atop other reasons such as its placement on the map..

AND how the styling of the Li family stood out among the other characters! Some details, reminded me slightly of Miao ethnicity, who are especially noted for their silver jewellery.

Here are the similarities I noticed:

Additionally notice Li baby brother's thick silver necklace.

Irregular front lapels of the jacket and bead tassels on hemlines

I don't think I have ever seen something like this on Han Chinese hanfu jackets.

Later, when she marries as the Legal Main wife, her wedding dress also improves in details to honor her background, compared to when she first married in as a concubine where she wore a regular red wedding hanfu like everyone else. At first I wondered if it's an alternate version of Xiuhefu but then felt like the finer details resemble the Miao dress more. It wouldn't be far-fetch of an estimation considering how the rest of details I mentioned above also direct to the same conclusion.

Notice the elaborate headdress quite different from the Han wedding jewellery we usually see, the dress itself being a jacket-skirt combo and not a one-piece outer robe etc hanfu.

I really like that during Yin Zheng's visit to Li Wei's hometown, they incorporated some silver ornament details to his dresses as well.🥰

Overall I think it's not a stretch for me to say that New Life Begins did care for its visual storytelling a lot, that it attempted to do something layered with its character and costume designs. It is so delightful to see the merging of different elements of different heritages like this, and it is very much fun to go treasure hunting for those details!

You woke up to Jacob walking back into the garage with a breakfast tray in hand. He easily closed the door one handed and returned to you. You had put his sweats back on and wrapped yourself up in the blanket.

“Good morning,” you said, yawning and stretching.

“Morning. We’ve got toast and bacon and juice.”

He sat the tray down between the two of you and you both began to dig in. This space you were existing in with Jacob felt so comfortable, like one you had known your whole life.

“Technically you have one last present. This one’s from everyone. Me, dad, your family, the pack.” Jacob handed you a small envelope.

You set down your piece of toast to grab it.

“Jake what is this? Y’all have already done so much… wait for real? This isn’t happening.”

You were staring at plane tickets. Two that said San Francisco and two that said Hawaii.

“Carlisle said everyone else has had a chance to go vacation on their own but you always stayed behind with them.”

You practically leapt onto your boyfriend, almost sending Jacob back as you hugged him and kissed him.

“We leave after Bella’s wedding.”

You were watching Bella break in her wedding shoes. She looked like an awkward duck. You didn’t want to laugh at your friend but you couldn’t help it. Heels were not for the uncoordinated.

“I’ve been breaking these in for three days, I think I should go barefoot.” Bella turned to Alice.

“Absolutely not.”

“It’s just, you don’t think this is a little much. The dress, the shoes, all of it.”

You couldn’t blame Bella. This wedding was Alice’s dream but Bella didn’t really care about all this. Alice spent the day bossing the boys around and making sure everything for Bella’s wedding tomorrow was perfect.

Jacob held the small bridesmaid’s bouquet of flowers as you tied his tie for him. You heard the click of a camera and saw a quick flash go by.

“Seriously? Pictures, Rose?”

“What? You two looked cute.”

Jacob handed you back your bouquet and you went with Rosalie to go line up for the wedding procession. The ceremony itself went off without any problems. Bella’s wedding really did look great. Although you probably wouldn’t let Alice take over planning for yours, you at least wanted some influence when the time came.

You, Jake, Bella, and Edward all took the same car to the airport. You gave your brother and friend a hug.

“Have fun you two!”

“Bring me back something from San Francisco,” Bella said as she hugged you back tightly.

The Airbnb you stayed at was super close to your old neighborhood. You and Jacob spent the first day buying groceries and settling in. You took him all around the city, showing him your favorite old spots and discovering new things that had been put up since you had left. This trip was just what you needed before summer came to an end and you had one more year of school left.

“(Y/N), I have a serious question to ask you.”

You and Jake were walking along the huge pier in San Francisco.

“Yeah?”

“After you graduate, are you guys just going to leave again? Are you gonna go off to college?”

“Jake I’ve been to college three times now. I don’t really need another degree. I guess we haven’t thought about what we’re doing. After I graduate we’ll still have at least five years before people start to notice and maybe another one or two before they get suspicious. But we’ve got time, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.”

“Alright.” Jacob kissed your forehead. You guys had a couple days left in San Francisco before spending two weeks in Hawaii and going back to Forks.

You were back at the Airbnb setting up a chess board on the floor of the bedroom. Both you and Jacob were in ridiculous couples underwear and t-shirts that read “I ❤ San Fran” that you had picked up at a tourist shop on the pier.

“Do you already know how to play?”

Jacob shook his head and you began showing him the rules. “Edward taught me how.”

“You sure you two aren’t actually related?” Jake asked as he made his first move.

“Hmm?”

“You two are so much alike sometimes. Same music, same hobbies, same wavelength of thinking.”

You laughed and continued to play. When the game finished— you beat Jacob— you got up to get lunch for both of you. Jacob stood up and pulled you back by the band of your underwear.

“Jake,” you whined as your back met his chest.

“Yes, princess?”

He laughed and turned you around so he could kiss you. You still weren’t able to fully drop the shield you had around yourself but moments when you were eating or intimate you let your powers go, enjoying the full sensation of everything.

Jacob’s hands found their way to his favorite part of you, gripping your butt harshly. You jumped slightly as the first spank landed on your ass. Jacob rubbed the area where the first one landed, soothing the slight sting before spanking you a few more times.

“What about lunch?” you asked. The words came out choppy as Jacob reached into your underwear, fingers moving in and out of you.

“The Chinese food can wait, I’m not that hungry.” Jacob mumbled against your lips. “Are you?”

“I think I’m hungry for something else.”

Jacob’s fingers paused momentarily as you reached into his boxer briefs. It was your turn to have him moaning against your lips. His blood smelled even sweeter when he was overwhelmed and turned on; and, you wanted nothing more than to keep that scent going. Jacob watched as you pulled his underwear down, stepping out of them without much thought.

His hands worked their way into your hair. Jacob could come undone right then and there with the way you looked up at him. He helped you stand up and you both made your way over to the bed.

The scent of your blood singer gave you the overwhelming urge to take control. You took Jacob’s shirt off before removing your own clothes. Jacob growled as you were on top of him, both of you slightly breathless. You were getting closer when you heard a slight cracking noise. Jacob gripped your hips to stop you.

“Wait, (Y/N).”

You looked at where Jacob was staring. Underneath his fingers were slight cracks. You both watched as the cracking closed and turned to bruises before slowly fading completely. Jacob sat up a bit, removing his hands from anywhere near the area.

“Shit, I’m so sorry (Y/N). I let myself go too much.”

You knew something seemed different this time. “Jake it’s fine. I like it when you let go completely, I know you want to.”

“I can’t. Look, I just hurt you.”

“I’m fine, it would just be some normal bruising if I was fully human. I’m a vamp, our skin’s so tough we crack and break not bruise.”

“But if it’s not just bruising, I’m actually breaking—”

“Jacob, look at me.” You grabbed the sides of his face. “I’m tough, okay. I don’t want you to hold back anymore, not at all. Let go completely. The cracks are bruises, like a hickey.”

“(Y/N)…”

“I’m your imprint aren’t I?”

Jacob nodded, feeling slightly turned on again at the sound of you saying imprint.

“So you know when I’m in pain.”

You began to roll your hips again, placing Jacob’s hands back on you. He held on a little tighter. Jacob was turned on but still nervous as he watched little cracks form under his fingers before turning into bruises.

“Does it feel like I’m in pain, Jacob?”

He focused completely on the imprint bond and couldn’t feel any pain only bliss and pleasure at that moment. Jacob flipped the two of you over so that he was now on top, letting go completely exactly like you asked. He was starting to actually enjoy the little cracks his hands made and the way you seemed to jump a little in extra pleasure when it happened.

You couldn’t think straight. The pace he set was fast and rough. Jacob was spurred on by your little mumbles of his name, the obscene way you moaned, and the feeling of your cold fingers running up and down his arms and back.

“Harder,” you whispered.

Jacob smiled, happy to oblige you. Your phone rang on your nightstand and he looked over.

“It’s your brother.”

“Probably checking in on us. Ignore it, I’ll call back later.”

The phone went dead and you kept going before it rang again. Jacob pulled out and you answered the phone, frustrated.

“What, Emmett?”

You swung your legs over the bed and let them dangle there. Out of everyone it just had to be Emmett. He loved to talk and his conversations could take literal hours.

“Hey, (Y/N).” Something in his voice sounded kind of odd but you couldn’t place it. “How is the vacation?”

“The vacation’s just great, Em. We were having a really good time.” You tried to emphasize without giving away exactly what you and Jake were doing, hoping Emmett would get some kind of a clue and hang up.

“Fun. So you and Jacob are doing good?”

“Yes. We are doing fine, no injuries, no sicknesses, no money issues.”

Jacob smiled as you looked over at him and rolled your eyes. He lazily rubbed on your thighs while you talked to Emmett. You watched Jacob’s smile go devilish. You gave him a questioning look as he got off the bed.

“Right now? We didn’t do much of anything today, it’s a pretty quiet day in San Fran—”

Jacob was looking up at you from between your thighs, watching your reaction.

“(Y/N), honey are you okay?”

You heard Esme’s voice.

“Yeah…sorry, I got distracted. Emmett am I on speaker?” You had to collect yourself as Jacob went down on you. He was reveling in the fact that you were struggling to keep composure.

“Yeah, the whole family’s here.”

You heard a chorus of ‘hi (Y/N) hi Jacob’ and barely choked out a hi as Jacob spread your legs out further. Jacob lifted his head for a moment to say hi to your family.

“So you guys are still in San Francisco?”

“Yeah, for another day or two.”

“How quickly can you get home?”

“WHAT Emmett?”

Your hand flew to Jacob’s hair. Hopefully, the raised voice hadn’t made anyone think anything suspicious. You could feel Jacob smirk at your last reaction.

“Sorry. You guys are gonna have to cut your vacation short. We need you to come back like now.”

“Now?”

“We have a problem back home.”

“Okay, fine…we’ll be back tomorrow evening.”

“Tomorrow evening?!” You heard the exasperated voice of Edward.

“Yes, Ed. Jake and I still have to pack…” Jacob stood you up so he could finish the fingering he had started earlier. “And book new flights.”

“Ok. See you tomorrow evening.”

“Yeah, tomorrow.”

“Sorry to cut your vacation short, (Y/N). I know you guys were looking forward to Hawaii.”

You had to hold the phone down and bite your lip as you came on Jake’s hand.

He picked up the phone with his other hand, no problem, not stopping his relentless pace with you.

“It’s alright, Hawaii can wait. I think we got plenty of time.” Jacob saved for you as you were finally calming down, holding his shoulders for support.

“We’ll see you tomorrow, bye guys.”

You hung up the phone and pushed Jacob jokingly.

“Really? While everyone was on the phone?”

“I think you liked it.” Jacob kissed your lips and you could taste yourself on him. “Are you okay to go one more round?”

You smacked his butt. “After what you just pulled I don’t know if I should let you get off.”

You giggled as Jacob rolled his eyes and pulled you towards him. You melted into his kiss before he turned you around and bent you over the bed.

“We’re back. There better be a good reason we’re not surfing the beaches of Honolulu right now.” You walked into your house with Jacob.

Everyone was gathered awkwardly towards the front. Despite being very worried about what they were going to tell you, your brothers were ready to beat the crap out of Jacob when you two entered the living room. The hickeys on your neck and bruising on your wrists hadn’t faded from yesterday. The cracks only closed up this morning. When you gave Jacob permission to not hold himself back, he really didn’t. Your brothers couldn’t stop staring, you wanted to shrink into Jacob’s side.

Edward stopped looking at the marks and attempted to look you in the eye. “Bella’s pregnant.”

You and Jake raced past your siblings.

“(Y/N/N), Jake? Is that you?” Bella’s voice rang out.

“She’s been asking for you two,” Rose said as she helped Bella stand up.

You looked at your friend who was pale, deathly skinny, and heavily pregnant. None of it made sense you and Jacob were only gone for two weeks. Even if you had gone to Hawaii, it would only have been a month.

“What the hell did you do?!” Jacob turned to Edward. You put a hand on him, stopping him from going after your brother.

“I didn’t know it was possible,” Edward said.

“Carlisle, what is it?” you asked your father.

“I don’t know… the ultrasound and needles won’t penetrate the embryonic sac.”

“I can’t see it either,” Alice told you. “And I can’t see Bella’s future anymore.”

“Edward, what did you do…” you whispered looking at Bella. She whimpered in pain and you were by her side in an instant, making it all go away.

please permit me this take

in the drama, the wedding was cut into two scenes and it is not merely alluding to the wedding, they used the same venue, floral arranger, style of outfits (both bride and groom), photo angles, invitation wordings, earrings you get it. it's not just "binjin coded," it's poaching.

this is what bothers me: it's a private closed-door wedding that the writer (crash landing on you screenwriter park ji eun) attended. everything is meant to be for the guest's eyes only but ofc leaks came out. does it make it fair game to replicate them to a tee? hardly.

i get trying to copy like...one of the royal weddings in london or the one with grace kelly of monaco, but those weddings were public events of public (as in govt-instated not celebrities) figures televised worldwide. im confused why they need to do this, and it's not over in just a few seconds too. it's milking off the actual material. why not try to be original? why not make one the drama can call its own? don't they deserve as much?

people argue it's a cute homage and it's for marketing. so you mean it's okay to exploit an actual couple's intimate wedding that spent 10M won for security detail alone? if anything it took away from the harmony of what should be a solid first episode for the drama.

also fine let's define a homage (or tribute what have you)

if say the writer decided to pick out a couple of elements such as a flower arch or a rooftop wedding similar to the binjin wedding that evokes the original material, the bride's cut of dress, sure that could be a nod. but certain creative licenses must be taken (and must be the focus) for the "imitation." it should be a subtle reference, not an outright copy paste.

when it's not used as a transformative device that will elevate the material, it's a copy. it signals a lack of originality and effort, which undermines a creator’s authenticity. it disrupts the original work’s integrity and tone, giving audiences a disjointed experience that detracts from true creative expression AND immersion. In turn, imitation is less a homage and more of a disservice to both the creator and the audience.

that drama would have benefited with a creative take of the ml/fl wedding. instead they are impostors copied and pasted in binjin shoes, it took me off the flow and story.

they already set the scene, why not do something dissociated with something so famous? something that's their own. something that wont look sloppy and feel like grabbing the rights to the actual wedding material.

it's just that, this couple made painstaking efforts to keep everything private and what little came out of it have become like idk rain in a chilean desert to fans like me. it feels sacred, like this is their personal thing, and to see people calling it as 'Hae-in and Hyun-woo's wedding' is a slap in their faces. even if permission was granted, it just doesn't sit well that they went to great lengths to make sure it's faithful unless this was like a korean version of the crown.

I actually don’t plan for her to do that, though that would be a really funny idea. Since Aemond has made it clear to her that he won’t touch her until she begs, she really has no need to protect herself from him. I mean, he could have kissed her at their wedding, but he chose not to. Perhaps it is unwise to trust the word of a dragon, but Aemond’s attentions fascinate the reader (not that she’d ever admit to it).

In addition, she needs to retain his interest as he’s likely her best shot at helping the people.

FL Update: Finally got to the Question about the Tracklayer's City on my main!
