@valentinerose529 passed on the brain rot so now I'm dragging y'all down with me

Please buckle up your non-existent seatbelts and keep all hands, wings, feet, tails, and horns inside the vehicle. This is gonna be a long post

As I've previously stated else where I firmly stick my foot in the hill that the Aphrodite Cabin (10) has so much more under the surface of pink and glitter (not that there's anything wrong with pink and glitter)

Aphrodite is quite literally the Goddess of Love if you're a PJO fan and don't know Greek mythology or you're a fan but completely forgot.

She has an ever changing form to each individual as well as an ever changing personality (in the PJO universe) due to beauty standards and the culture of the place she's in.

Love is complicated and messy, it's not the same for everyone or every situation.

Thus why I put Keefe in good old 10. What a better place for an empath than the Aphrodite Cabin?

Now moving onto the ever messy Vackers

I love Fitz and Biana. I do............but I got an entire skeleton of bones to pick with Alden Vacker and of he can meet me outside the Denny's parking lot please-

While not actually smart Alden did manage to become emissary in KOTLC and Athena seems to like mildly smart guys who end up being very mid dad's. Girls got a type and I can only say hopes and prayers she gets better.

Athena is a strategist and occasionally thinks only in the form of a game (I will be using chess). Athena knows when it's time to get sharp and wet the blade and move people to where they have to go. She may be immortal but time is still against her so chop chop guys, we've got a magical meguiffin to snatch and bring back.

Athena is the goddess of wisdom, war strategy, handicraft.

What better godly parent to leave an ever lasting shadow on the eldest son Alvar. And the bitterness that stems from being out shined by perfect child Fitz who developed a far more impressive power than his older brother.

"but Biana feels so Aphrodite coded!" You cry and I hear you but Biana is a fighter at heart. She likes winning Quest Hunt and tackling the shit out of people in Tackle Bramble (she would love rugby). She's competitive and clever though it's not clear where on earth that gene came from, clearly not Alden.

And let's not forget it was Biana's idea to turn shirt ruffles into weapon hiding spots. Girls got strategy and style. Athena would be proud.

(plus the absolute sandal that would be blowing up the Camp's gossip train of Biana potentially being Aphrodite's daughter dispite having two Athena brothers would be scalding hot)

Onto everyone's favorite technopath

"oh Hephaestus, we all know" well you're wrong bucko

Worm, germs, plotted plant I named Timmy. What has Dex Dizznee built so far? Bombs, multiple bracelets for punching, many devices used just to heck the government's most top secret files, a panic button/tracker, more devices that hack into the government's files, a circuit that shall not be discussed.

These are all pretty crazy cool shit and Hephaestus would be damn proud to have Dex as his son.

But Dex isn't his son.

Dex's dad is the father of thieves, travelers, and roads. Hermes

"WHAT?" Yeah I know I know. But think about it. Dex is smart, he's so damn smart but he's tricky too. He knows the chemicals needed to dye an imp pink with glittery nails to match, he can whip up a batch up balding blam to get revenge, he can also be easily lost in the background of things.

So what a major disappointment it must be, to be waiting any day now for the sign of the hammer in a blazing forge and get a stupid winged sandal instead.

The Song Twins

Tam and Linh really gave me a run for my money because they're twins but Linh is an obvious Poseidon kid while Tam isn't and however powerful and weird the gods may be, two gods can't have kids with the same woman at the same time. It just ain't possible.

Linh's water powers are important to her character but so are Tam's. But Tam can still have spooky powers just not in the same flavor. Linh is the pretty side of Poseidon's rule over the seas. The water that heals and the funny animal shapes she makes. But the deeper into the ocean you get the darker it becomes. Tam's powers are the less pleasant things in life.

Now for everyone's second favorite arsonist (not Sophie)

Marella Redek has Pyrokenisis and you're saying "oh this one's eazy, Leo, come pick up your sibling" but you're wrong yet again my friend.

While Marella would probably be super frustrated with getting the tinker cabin over something that could help her mom (y'all remember how helping her mom was her main motivation?) at least with the STEM geeks she could hammer out some kind of magic mood ring to help her mom or make a bracelet with charmed gemstones capable of alerting her mom or herself when danger is near or just something

But no

Instead Marella is stuck in the only cabin that couldn't have been a worst match up for her. Hecate. (I know I previously said Ares but I changed my mind)

Marella, instead of having a knack for magic like almost every other child of Hecate instead got the flaming torch part of the deal. Literally. Marella can also see strings of magic and she doesn't like it one bit.

And finally Sophie (because this is getting too long)

Sophie was a tricky one since she has all these powers and it was nearly impossible to put her in a cabin that really fit with her

What finally got me to decide was actually her teleporting powers and inflicting. They have a sort of lightning and thunder styled description so who better than lord thunderbutt himself, Zeus.

The triples are at that age were they can help their parents in the family shop, Dex had volunteered to teach them some basic alchemy.

Roisin’s Reading Rumble: ROUND THREE @camelspit @arson-anarchy-death

SO sorry for the big paragraphs my adhd brain can’t read them either. I also barely proofread and wrote this thing in two sittings. So. My bad if it sucks and also my bad if u can’t tell bc you can’t read it. I bolded to help but if it makes it worse. oops.

Preview: Misattributing Dex’s drive to make a name for himself and prove people wrong to pure selflessness takes away these parts of his character that show the elves still have the “human” need to be wanted. It’s thematically important for the characterization of elves as “more” or “greater” than humans, but it’s also essential to Dex as an individual.

Without further ado:

DEXTER ALVIN DIZZNEE

From Dex’s introduction, where we learn he’s a prankster and the child of a bad match, to his most recent scene learning about Rex’s talentless status, he has been shown to have the flaws and complexities that fandoms love to skip over. The most populated form of content for Dex remains the “cinnamon roll” or “the boy who deserves a cover and more page time” rather than focusing on when he does appear—and most appearances add more evidence against the former portrayal. He lives as a living manifestation of the inequality and prejudice the Lost Cities hold beneath their polished veneer—the rest of the main cast serve to highlight this in different ways, but Dex was the first to rip the blindfold from Sophie’s awed eyes. Traits such as social awareness, intense jealousy, desperate ambition, and sullen anger make up Dex’s character right alongside all the sweet selflessness the fandom prefers, and erasing them is a huge discredit to his complex and hard-earned development as the series progresses.

The KOTLC wiki in particular tends to place Dex on a pedestal that little canon evidence backs. Even the description of his character, which supposedly is unbiased and moderated, reads “Dex Dizznee (Dex Diz-nee) is a deuteragonist in the Keeper of the Lost Cities series and a amazing, strong and intelligent friend to Sophie and the team always doing his best to help out.” While none of this description is inaccurate—Dex is, after all, very intelligent and strong in resolve and courage, consistently working behind the scenes to help his friends—it leaves out several key aspects of his character. Portraying Dex as simply a great helper and a wonderful friend erases his narrative importance and drops him into the role of one of the gnomes at Alluveterre—no less important to the battle, but far less important to the plot and themes of the work as a whole. Another description from the wiki reads: “He is considered a kind, intelligent ‘cinnamon roll’ by the fandom and is always trying to prove himself when it is unnecessary by pushing himself to create gadgets using his talent because of his selfless nature.” Once again, the description moves from complimentary to completely erasing key motivations and desires that highlight the importance of his character in the narrative as a whole. The fandom considering him a cinnamon roll motivated entirely by his selfless nature wipes away the combination of pride, ambition, and need for attention and acclaim that drives Dex to accept tasks and jobs from the Council he hates, form vendettas against the Vackers, and constantly succumb to an often selfish competitive streak.

Dex becomes Sophie’s friend because he’s a loner like she is, and to showcase the darker elements of the Lost Cities such as matchmaking and multiple birth prejudice. In his very first appearance in the series, Stina and Vika Heks accuse him of using a balding serum on Stina, claiming that “‘‘[they] won’t need to [prove anything]. They’d expect nothing less from a bad match!’” (KOTLC). Sophie goes from new caretakers on a fantastical animal sanctuary, new magic school, and crystal palaces straight to some of the worst the Lost Cities has to offer— and Dex carries this responsibility with him for the next few books. As Sophie makes friends with the Vackers and Keefe, the elves with seemingly perfect lives, Dex remains there as a glaring reminder of the ugliness of her new world. By erasing that, a fundamental part of his character that influences every single relationship he has is destroyed. Dex finds it hard to befriend Fitz, Biana, and Keefe not because he’s socially awkward (as other parts of the fandom suggest) but because they represent the success he craves, which his family has been systematically denied.

Another essential Dex Dizznee trademark that fanon interpretations constantly forget is his selfishness, his ambition, and his consequential jealousy. Fanon portrayals of Dex as selfless and endlessly kind erase his true need to be the best at everything, even though he doesn’t seem to have the natural talent that Fitz and Keefe have. In Everblaze, he drops his morals and overlooks his hatred of the Council in order to work for them making ability restrictors, a job that places him in a place of honor and prestige. The idea of being recognized for his natural talent blinds him to the true target of the restrictor: Sophie. “‘They wouldn’t be controlling everyone,’ Dex argued. ‘Just the people who need it.’ / ‘And who decides that?’ Fitz asked. / ‘The Council, obviously. What?’ Dex asked when Fitz cringed. ‘I thought your family was like, the Council’s number one fan club.’ (Everblaze). The Council’s praise for his abilities inflates both his ego and his inherent need for recognition or success. The concept that his motivation for endless creation and gadgets comes from his selflessness or self sacrifice isn’t true because his motivation is to gain acclaim, fame, and apologies for thinking less of him. He wants fame and acclaim that his family has been denied. He wants to prove the Hekses and everyone like them wrong.

Later, when he becomes one of the youngest Regents on Team Valiant, Dex accuses Stina of wanting to be a part of the team only for a title, and she throws the same accusation back. “Dex didn’t deny it. And the intensity in his eyes made Sophie realize how much this opportunity had to mean to him.” (Legacy). What Stina and Dex have in common in this moment is the need to prove that their talentless fathers, bad-match parents (since Vika and Timkin should have been a Bad Match) don’t define them, and more importantly were judged incorrectly and with prejudice. Dex’s understanding of inequality ties into his motivations for wanting success—both a positive, when he wants to prove his parents’ marriage didn’t harm anything, and a negative, when he overlooks that same inequality in order to prove the haters wrong.

This ambition moves into jealousy when someone achieves something he failed at— for example, when he meets Tinker for the first time. Tinker is an adult and far more experienced at the type of invention he wants to succeed in, but after so long of being told he’s a true prodigy of technopathy and being useful to Sophie and the team, it hits a sore spot. “‘Is this a better solution than what you were planning?’ Tinker asked Dex, with no bravado in her tone. Only curiosity. / But Dex still wouldn’t look at her as he nodded. And his sigh was somewhere between a grumble and a harrumph. / ‘You have a competitive streak, don’t you?’ Tinker noted. / Sophie and Mr. Forkle both said ‘yes’ while Dex said ‘no.’ / ‘I’m not being competitive,’ he argued. ‘I’m allowed to be annoyed that I got replaced’ (Flashback). Effortless success rubs him the wrong way because he has had to work so hard to overcome stigma, discrimination, and his own doubt to succeed, while people like Tinker appear to have to have the same natural talent that bothered him about the Vackers. Misattributing his drive to make a name for himself and prove people wrong to pure selflessness takes away these parts of his character that show the elves still have the “human” need to be wanted. It’s thematically important for the characterization of elves as “more” or “greater” than humans, but it’s also essential to Dex as an individual. Why does he want this? Because he wants to help Sophie, or because he wants to prove to the world and himself that he can have this?

While all these flaws (jealousy, selfishness, sullen competetiveness) make Dex who he is, they don’t make him a mean person, and certainly not a bad character. He was the first friend Sophie ever had (Fitz truly does not count) and also the one to help her acclimate. He grew from his jealousy, selflessly staying behind the scenes to develop new gadgets to help his friends in their battles. He took steps back and learned how to place blame: not on Keefe for sensing Rex would be talentless, but on society for the way his brother would be treated. But viewing these positive things as the whole of his personality and ignoring any flaws he might have is a huge disservice—these flaws are what makes him interesting, a developed character. There is no such thing as a “sweet cinnamon roll” character in KOTLC, because making a character only good and never flawed is objectively bad writing, and makes for uninteresting dynamics.

Readers wouldn’t be interested in Dex if he never lashed out, never reacted negatively to Sophie, never had his own wants and desires that didn’t always correspond to what the narrative needs. He’s self punishing constantly over his mistakes, not forgiving himself for Fitz’s stabbing in Neverseen or for the ability restrictor. He’s jealous over Fitz, Biana, Keefe, Stina, Tinker, and Sophie’s success and power. He wants to succeed and is (or used to be) willing to place that need above the needs of his family and friends. And he also learns that Fitz and Biana are not their legacy. He cries over his brother’s future, and assures Keefe he would never blame him. He works with Stina and explores new methods of technopathy with Tinker and encourages Sophie to step into an official leadership role. Erasing any of these traits or experiences steals part of who he is and where he fits into, an unfair and inaccurate reading of the series as a whole.

In conclusion: The Dex wiki page is an atrocity, and someone who isn’t me (because I don’t have the energy 💖) needs to fix it.

the fire burns bright from the kindling we've gathered tonight

It's nighttime, and there seems to be nothing else but the stillness in the world, which is drawn from the aurenflare and the four people around it.

requested to add the link for kotlc pride month, so here it is!!!

The aurenflare crackles, like dry branches breaking underfoot; the aurenflare's sound contrasting its feel of cool, round water droplets.

Its splendour is something to admire too, the blues and purples and greens and oranges and yellows and reds and everything in between lighting up the warm night.

Or, it might just be warm from the aurenflare. It is summer; the trees long having regained leaves, the gardenias in full bloom by now.

And sitting in front of the aurenflare are a few people: Marella Adene Redek, self-declared pyromaniac, but, more accurately, pyrokinetic, of which this fire originates; Biana Amberly Vacker, out and ready to do something dangerous, and completely unallowed by aer aristocratic world; Linh Hai Song, away from the world for this one night, before returning to quiet contemplation like any other day; and Sophie Elizabeth Foster, with too much weight on her shoulders and not enough freedom.

And the aurenflare is rather small, all things considered, not very encompassing, only on Solreef's large lawn.

Solreef is nothing but the home of many, of which Linh Song is of importance in that case.

And it is now, that four people, who have only come together for this small but somewhat ritualistic thing, divest only the things that children think of in the snatches of night, only things that the boldest of the bold decide to do.

However, it is worth noting that none of the four are the boldest of the bold. Sophie is a leader, and as thus careful. Linh is nothing of not contemplatively quiet, Biana is always planning. And Marella gossips but always knows exactly how to phrase and execute to make others thing exactly what she wants them to.

And it is within these bonds of love, care, and boldness, to lead four people of usually polite disposition to contradict it completely.

"Do not," Linh gasps, as if betrayed by the very notion. "I am not, in any way, about to blow up Solreef. I declare Marella more guilty."

Marella only shrugs, a luxury she is not used to. "This fire is from me, loves. I am not about to snuff it out."

Biana giggles at that, not quite used to being able to drop a girly countenance. "As if we would ever want you to, dear Marella."

Marella flips her hair. "I would expect no less of you, darling."

It is within the confines of being outside of society that these four peculiarities in their world can breathe, deeply and fully, with the feeling of being alive.

The aurenflare is beautiful, of course, but no more beautiful than what Linh thinks of Sophie and Biana and Marella, and no more beautiful than what Sophie thinks of Biana and Linh and Marella, and no more beautiful than what Biana thinks of Sophie and Linh and Marella, and no more beautiful than what Marella thinks of Sophie and Biana and Linh.

"Ripplenuts, ladies," Sophie says, dumping around sixty into a bowl, of which Linh immediately grabs and puts on a nut-roaster, and interesting invention made by one Dex Dizznee, in an effort to more efficiently roast ripplenuts but also brattails.

Brattails do not feature here for the simple reason that none of the people present want them to.

Biana sighs, though, at Linh's insistence to be the nut-roaster. "Linh, love, let one of us do it sometime!"

"No."

Biana smiles despite all that. "Fine."

Linh smiles, and it's the end of that.

Marella laughs, though, and her laugh sounds like the aurenflare, with its dry branches crackling.

"Marella," Sophie scolds lightly. "Do not laugh at our dear Linh's inability to give up the ripplenut-roaster."

Marella just shakes her head.

"I like aurenflare," Biana says, after the conversation has died down and the only thing standing is quiet companionship. "It's colourful and pretty and wonderful."

"Me too," Marella says. "It's my favourite, of all that I can create."

"The ripplenuts are ready!" Linh calls, before taking out a few bowls and dumping sixteen ripplenuts each, dividing them equally.

Biana smiles, taking a ripplenut. "My favourite."

"I thought your favourites are custard bursts?" Sophie asks, looking anxious at the possibility of getting something wrong.

Biana finishes aer first ripplenut before answering. "Of course, love! Ripplenuts are actually my third-favourite, then, after custard bursts and cinnacreme."

Sophie laughs. "I still can't believe you don't like mallowmelt."

"I do! Just not as much as most things."

Marella shakes her head. "Oh, never change."

"I wasn't planning to."

"Anyway," Linh begins, "did you hear the gossip?"

"What are they saying now?"

"My brother," Linh says, pausing for emphasis, "and Stina."

"What?"

"Exactly my reaction. Do you think they'd be good together?"

"I see it too," Biana continues. "Tam can help Stina be a little nicer, and Stina can help Tam be more outgoing. I think they'd be good together."

Sophie nods, but doesn't say anything.

Linh smiles. "I do think that too; Stina and Tam could be good for each other. But Stina as my sister-in-law? No."

"They might not last," Biana points out, "but I'm also near-certain that Stina's getting nicer anyways. Tam has taste, at least, and I don't think it'll go too badly."

"Hopefully they'll work well," Marella concludes. "Anyway, gossip is dreary sometimes."

Linh laughs. "Naturally. But it's fun."

"It's always fun," Biana points out.

They all laugh, and everything seems right.

And high up, away from the aurenflare, Tam Song watches from his window, his sister and them all, and then closes his drapes before reading Stina's letter once more, and going to his bed to do nothing but sleep.

But Linh and Biana and Marella and Sophie will be up late into the night, watching the aurenflare and each other, and spending time the way that they will, with only the thought of each other and the moment never ending.

hot take on kotlc that's going to make a LOT of people mad (I'll fight you all, I'm not scared)

DISCLAIMER: it's been SEVERAL years since I've read the books but these are the main things that stuck with me. Those of y'all who want to argue me on this will probably be able to give better evidence for your arguments than I will but these are the general ~vibes~ I retained from the books, and if I got these vibes so strongly as to be able to remember them years later then I'm thinking they might just have something to them. I also feel the need to cause some violence so HERE WE GO.

Sophie Foster is overrated and shouldn't be the main character.

and here's why:

overpowered. enough said. LIKE I KNOW ITS NOT HER FAULT BUT FORKLE/SHANNON REALLY SAID "op Fortnite kid lmao" AND LET HER RIP. LIKE WHY. STOP. LET A NORMAL KID SAVE THE WORLD FOR ONCE.

KOTLc character and if they're a dog/cat person or other animals.

I can't pick 1 character to make posts art so I stay pathetic and do all of them. Stina's in this one now! neither can I stay on prompt so-

Sophie: I think she likes cats more, but dogs are the animal that actually bond and enjoy her company. Marty was the only exception. honestly there should be an AU where Marty joins Sophie and they have adventures together. ily Marty. But Marty hates sophies guts. But not really. we should do Marty POV. and the whole time he's complaining abt sophies stupidity(im sorry Sophie ily girl. Marty's just a meanie). Marty hates iggy too. and Silveny. Marty is filled with rage. Marty will hunt you down. For angst we can do something where Sophie's abt to die from like a stab wound or something. and it' stop deep for Elwin to fix so. she's just bleeding out. and Marty finally lets her pet him. and then he curls up on Sophies dead body and. ok Marty secretly loves Sophie.

Keefe: Bc he's an empath, and bc of his personality in general tbh, all animals like him a lot. He's an animal guy. Marty would love him. wait. Keefe as a horse boy. Stina horse girl. they should bond tbh. Keefe dex and Stina, committing crimes and lowering students confidence with well placed insults. Anyways, his animal, whether dog or cat would be primarily an emotional support animal. Bc He needs something happy in his life. Keefe obvi sneaks the dog/cat into Foxfire w him. bc he's Keefe. Aw the dog/cat sometimes aids in his pranks. Like painted paw prints on the roof of the school is included with one of Keefe's pranks, and no one ones how they got there. bc Marty is my newfound obsession im gonna say that Marty tolerates Keefe, and it's a surprise for him bc generally animals love him. Marty low-key bullies Keefe. idk how a cat would bully an elf. but Marty does it.

Fitz: He's the exact opposite of Sophie. He likes dogs, but cats love him. imagine with me, Marty see's fitz, runs to him, starts scratching shoppe when she tries to take him back from Fitz. Silveny may love Sophie (and Keefe). but sophies childhood pet and companion, the one who has been with her since birth, nah. Marty sneaks into sophies school bag to see Fitz. Marty is the real reason Sophie's so mad at Fitz in Unlocked. She's just jealous that Marty love him more. Also Fitz is a total Disney princess so alllll the woodland creatures congregate at his balcony when he like opens the window. Singing abt how much he loves the sunrise or some shit. And then birds land on his arms and sing in harmony w him. And then Biana socks him with a shoe.

Dex: I am honestly not sure. On one hand, he's super busy & can't take the time to properly give attention to a dog, and in that sense, would prefer a cat. But also he's a Dizznee, and dogs are arguably more hyper and active than cats, which is something he would like & be used to. Or maybe he would like an animal that's calm bc his family is so chaotic....girl idk. I think he's more into smaller animals actually, like guinea pigs, or tomples, or a gremlin. Now that I think abt it. Hasn't dex spent more time with Iggy than Sophie? Girl what if Iggy likes Dex more than Sophie. all her pets are abandoning her! Marty likes that Dex keeps re-dying iggy, bc he hates iggy. So he lets Dex pet him, everyone and a while.

Biana: U know those girls with like the rlly big dogs that they like tell to sit and everyone starts sweating bc for some reason telling a dog to sit is hot????? That's her. She is a dog person all the wayyyy. She goes on walks with her big ass dog and ppl look the other way bc she's Intimidating. She's also Disney princess core tho so, the birds love her too. she's just not annoying abt it like someone else. Marty likes fitz, so by proxy, he sadly has to put up with Biana. Of course, on Marty's long lists of things he hates, are big Dogs. So he kind of runs away from her. He doesn't hate her, but he does fear her.

Stina: I mean, this is redundant but like.....horse girl. Of course we're talking abt dogs and cats, and ik dogs r used to herd sheep and goats n stuff, so maybe dogs would be useful for herding horses/unicorns too? I mean by proxy of her horse girliness, she's a farm girl too. And generally, dog r more useful for that. So she would have a pretty active and veryyy Bark-ey dog. She has a dog whistle. Stina is mean, Marty is mean. They get along. they're chill.

Tam: I mean. W all know he's a cat boy. There's no argument. He would want a quieter animal so he could like read in peace. He doesn't actively look for cats, but like, cats like him, so he keeps a bowl of food outside Tiergan's house (forgot what it's called) and gives them all names. and pets them from time to time. But they're all stray cats, they're not actually his. And Tam is cool w that. So in this vein, Marty likes Tam. He might be Marty's third favorite person.

OO that's a great comparison!! We can probably more easily relate the lyrics to Dex because we know him and he's older/maturer/more developed as a character because of it. But given the Dizznee family, I think it's safe to assume that however Dex was raised is how the triplets are being raised as well

the lines, "And Daddy told us, "Never listen to the ones / Pointing nasty fingers and making fun" / 'Cause we were good kids" is very reminiscent of Kesler's approach to parenting and his beliefs. He taught Dex not to listen to the people who insulted him, who made fun of his parents match status or the fact that his father is talentless, that he could be talentless, too. Kesler's approach is more "let's prank them so hard they won't even think about messing with us." Which is...an interesting approach! Because the Dizznee family wholeheartedly loves their kids and believes in them and knows that what the rest of the world is saying is a bunch of bs, and they want their kids to know that. They know they're growing up in a harsh world set against them, but they will do everything in their power to counteract that, to remind their children that they are okay, that they are valued and loved, that they are good. What everyone else thinks doesn't matter; they shouldn't listen to them. That's the belief of the Dizznee family.

There's also: "I know which place I'm from / I know my home," because the Dizznee family is a very strong unit. There is no doubt in any of the kids minds whether or not their parents love and support them. Their parents have been generous with time, with affection, with care. They have never tried to change anything about their kids (except maybe make the triplets less destructive, but that one's understandable), and have given them a very solid foundation and reliable ties and supports to each other. No matter what they do, where they go, they're going to have their parents and their family to fall back on, to credit for how they were raised and for their open minds, their confidence. They know where their home is and who their family is, and they know how loved they are.

I'll just mention one more before this gets too long, but "My Mama said that it was okay[...]Mama told us we were good kids" feels very important to the dynamic of the Dizznee family. Juline so strongly believes in her family, in her kids, in their worth, and that is what makes her into who she is. Because she sees how her family is treated and that hardens her to the world, but makes her even more of a caring person when it comes to her kids because she has to make sure she knows they are loved. She has to counteract everything they hear out in public and in the social world, because she is not going to let her kids grow up thinking they're bad or wrong or worthless. The way they are is okay, and it is beautiful and it is special because it is them. They are okay the way they are and nothing should be changed about them, because they're good kids. They may get in trouble and they may cause havoc and they may hold grudges, but at their core they are good kids. And she needs them to know that. Mama really did say that it was okay! Just like in the song

Your comparison between the Dizznee family and the song is excellent! The whole vibe of the song and of being enough when other people don't value you fits with how their being raised and the beliefs Kesler and Juline want them to have, how they want them to see themselves. I'm sure other lines can be related to them as well but these ones stood out to me the most, so thanks for the suggestion!
