Today my therapist introduced me to a concept surrounding disability that she called "hLep".
Which is when you - in this case, you are a disabled person - ask someone for help ("I can't drink almond milk so can you get me some whole milk?", or "Please call Donna and ask her to pick up the car for me."), and they say yes, and then they do something that is not what you asked for but is what they think you should have asked for ("I know you said you wanted whole, but I got you skim milk because it's better for you!", "I didn't want to ruin Donna's day by asking her that, so I spent your money on an expensive towing service!") And then if you get annoyed at them for ignoring what you actually asked for - and often it has already happened repeatedly - they get angry because they "were just helping you! You should be grateful!!"
And my therapist pointed out that this is not "help", it's "hLep".
Sure, it looks like help; it kind of sounds like help too; and if it was adjusted just a little bit, it could be help. But it's not help. It's hLep.
At its best, it is patronizing and makes a person feel unvalued and un-listened-to. Always, it reinforces the false idea that disabled people can't be trusted with our own care. And at its worst, it results in disabled people losing our freedom and control over our lives, and also being unable to actually access what we need to survive.
So please, when a disabled person asks you for help on something, don't be a hLeper, be a helper! In other words: they know better than you what they need, and the best way you can honor the trust they've put in you is to believe that!
Also, I want to be very clear that the "getting angry at a disabled person's attempts to point out harmful behavior" part of this makes the whole thing WAY worse. Like it'd be one thing if my roommate bought me some passive-aggressive skim milk, but then they heard what I had to say, and they apologized and did better in the future - our relationship could bounce back from that. But it is very much another thing to have a crying shouting match with someone who is furious at you for saying something they did was ableist. Like, Christ, Jessica, remind me to never ask for your support ever again! You make me feel like if I asked you to call 911, you'd order a pizza because you know I'll feel better once I eat something!!
Edit: crediting my therapist by name with her permission - this term was coined by Nahime Aguirre Mtanous!
Edit again: I made an optional follow-up to this post after seeing the responses. Might help somebody. CW for me frankly talking about how dangerous hLep really is.

i unironically love the Rat Grinders so much and its so funny to me that everyone on tumblr has jumped onto hating them so vehemently; these kids are transmigration light novel protagonists and it's hilarious. they reached level 100 killing nothing but slimes etc etc
that crap is some of the most soul crushing work imaginable. i will forcequit any video game the moment it's clear that grinding is the only way to advance because i hate it so much. they're not having fun. they're not enjoying the work. they got stuck with a DM who thinks XP leveling is worthwhile and they're slogging through it in the most tedious and boring way possible. they're 'powergaming' in only the most loose definition of the term. they're having the worst high school experience of anyone. they've traumabonded over spending 33 hours a week in abject misery and have now turned feral

WAIT Elle has box braids in s3??? I could cry
I don't think she had bad hair in s1 or s2, but I'm excited that they're actually giving the Black girls Black hairstyles instead of having them wear it out.
Before, it felt like the (all-white, for context) hair department was just ignorant about Black hair, so they put wigs on the Black actresses and only did styles that also work on nonblack hair for their own sake/convenience. This theory was especially supported by the fact that Tara, whose 4c hair couldn't really be styled the same as nonblack hair, wore a twistout that would take literal hours to do every day, but she had box braids in s2! and Elle has box braids now!! I'm so excited!!!
I also feel like this fits her bold, fashion-loving personality so much better than leaving her hair out. Our hair is basically its own accessory, and the long box braids are very feminine. Again, I'm not saying not having a protective style isn't feminine or fashionable (I myself am a fashion girlie with an Afro), but having one is another outlet for her creativity, and I'm glad they're recognizing that now.

How mainstream sci-fi authors name their short stories:
One sad and dreadful day they finally came down to Earth
unique name
it's easy to find (there simply isn't another short story with the same name)
you can tell this is a sci-fi right away
it pretty well summarizes the story
How mainstream sci-fi authors name their novels:
The Ship
the most common name you can think of
it is NOT that easy to find that one book you are looking for (there are literally like five other books with the same name from the same year and by the same author)
idk is this a sail tale? pirate story? a fanfic?
first few pages are located in a spaceship, but then they land on a planet and the ship is never going to be brought back ever again

like I'm actually sick of being at my grandma's house when one cousin leaves another comes in it's so crowded here and it's not anybody's fault I'm not even supposed to be here and I want to go back to my house so badly I'm constantly having to travel back and forth between homes because everytime I go back to my house my neighbours are doing something to drive me away again. last time I went back 2 neighbours were talking shit about me when I haven't even been at home for a month so all I can take from that is I'm staying on their minds constantly cause they haven't seen me for over a month and they're still talking about me

Akira Toriyama is known to never look over his own manga and thus is known to forget a lot of stuff, so there is bound to be some inconsistencies in his own work as it goes on.
See this is what I’m talking about. Okay, he forgot the name of the series was “Dragon Ball Super”, so when he wanted the movie to be called “Super Hero”, he didn’t realize the name of the movie would have “super super” in it. And he forgot about Super Saiyan 2 one time, like 20 years after he came up with it. And he couldn’t remember 18′s hair color.
Fine.
I don’t have a beef with people poking fun at Toriyama’s foibles. What does annoy me is when fans act like Toriyama is some drooling idiot who isn’t worthy of his reputation as a master storyteller, all because he didn’t memorize his own work.
In the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure fandom, it’s a meme called “Araki Forgot”. It’s also been debunked in a series of YouTube videos, which carefully examines most of the so-called lapses in Hirohiko Araki’s memory, and addresses them. Nine times out of ten, it’s the reader who wasn’t paying attention to the details.
Meanwhile, Araki was putting Part 1-7 references in JoJolion, and DBS: Super Hero is chock full of callbacks to Dragon Ball lore from 30-35 years ago. Colonel Violet was referenced in the movie. The thing where Guru awakened Gohan and Krillin’s hidden power was referenced in the movie. Trunks killing Frieza was referenced in the movie. The tree symbol that appears when Piccolo accesses his new Orange Piccolo form? That’s an Ajisa tree, which the Namekians cultivated for purpose of beautifying their environment.
My point is that, sure, there’s probably a lot of things Toriyama has lost track of over the years, but what deserves our attention are the details he does remember, either because he knows what’s important, or because he has a reliable staff to help him with these things. The dude has forgotten more about storytelling than most fans will ever know.

Ok so the thing about Izz is that they're fundamentally defined by love right? Love of Veylan (obvs), love of their family, love of any and everyone who treats them kindly. But, especially post-mental break, that love never extends to themself because they are, secondary to love, defined by guilt and self-loathing. We see this over and over and over; even as they've started the process of healing and accepted that they do have to live, it's bc they're resigned to this being their reality rather than thinking they deserve it.
Which is (one of the reasons) why Candor drives me insane! Because he loves Izz! He's maybe the only person who truly does and Izz might be the first person he's truly loved and Izz didn't build him to love them they built him to kill them but it didn't work! "Here is my hand that will not harm you" etc etc. They're two parts of the same mind, the same entity, and it turns out the love that Izz can't give themself was built into Candor instead.
Which is just...aaagh! Radical self-love indeed 😭
