The constant rolling disaster that is Overwatch's game development aside, what really perplexes me about how Blizzard is handling the broader franchise is their continual insistence that a canon narrative exists in spite of their equally continual refusal to tell anyone what it is.
Like, okay, the events of the games aren't canon. Fair enough: the games are multiplayer-only, and you can't account for player actions.
Oh, and the animated short films aren't canon either – they're properly understood as in-universe propaganda, not depictions of actual events. That's a little high concept for you guys, but fine.
But surely the comics are canon, right? Well, no; some of the comics (we're not telling you which ones) were canon at one point, but the writing team has decided to go in a different direction.
My dudes, what is left? The weird Source Filmmaker porn? Is that canon? Well, apparently it's at least as canon as anything else!

Ok, time for a hot take.
It really bothers me that Rosie and Sam’s relationship is reduced and made so shallow in the films, with the implication that they’ve never even talked to each other, and Sam is pining for this girl he doesn’t really know….
Like …
… this actually misses the entire point of their relationship in the book.
In the book, Sam and Rosie grew up together. His warmest memories that bring him comfort in the darkest place are the memories of playing with her in the pool when they were kids.
The point of Tolkien’s Rosie is that she’s someone familiar to Sam, the face that comes into his mind when he thinks of home. He remembers an actual moment he spent with her, a moment of fun and bonding. Then when he comes home, it turns out she could somehow sense the moment the Ring was destroyed, and knew he was coming home. They have this special, deep bond that brings Sam a sense of comfort and stability.
She’s not supposed to be some distant, unknown figure that Sam has built up in his head but has never actually talked to or gotten to know. That’s literally the antithesis of Tolkien’s Rosie Cotton.
It’s like the films flip Sam’s initial relationships with Rosie and with Frodo. He’s more familiar and friendly with Frodo; they apparently go to the pub together frequently like typical buddies do, whereas Rosie is in another world, dancing and making drinks behind the bar, and Sam is just too unsure of himself to even make small talk with her.
And Tolkien’s portrait is the exact opposite. Rosie is the one who Sam spends a lot of time with and has known for a long while. Frodo is the one who Sam is distant from and doesn’t really have the nerve to make chit-chat with, because he is Frodo’s servant and thus he thinks it’s not his place to be too friendly with “his betters,” as his dad says. (And then the journey takes the two of them out of that restrictive class system and frees them to bond and get to know each other as people.)
Then when they come home, there’s an actual sense of coming home, because Rosie embodies everything that is familiar and safe for Sam. Not everything that is unknown and scary.

I really like what this physicist, Lamar Glover, has to say in Behind the Curve.

you are personally and directly hit by a bus¹ and isekai-ed, via resurrection, into the body of the main character your most recent WIP
reblog and tell me: on a scale of 1–10, how screwed are you right now?
¹ this is, transparently, a plot device, so if you are about to tell me "joke's on you, I never leave my fifteenth floor apartment!" then you may rest assured it will have tremendous comedic value when the bus is launched into the sky and crashes through your apartment wall to flatten you anyway

If you're lamenting the fact that you used to be able to shoot through a 500-page novel in like a day when you were in middle school and now you can't, it's worth bearing in mind that a big part of that is because when you were in middle school, your reading comprehension sucked. Yes, mental health and the stresses of adult life can definitely be factors, but it's also the case that reading is typically more effortful as an adult because you've learned to Ponder The Implications. The material isn't just skimming over the surface of your brain anymore, and some of the spoons you used to spend on maximising your daily page count are now spent on actually thinking about what you're reading!

If you had a ghost GF, do you think it would be easier to tell your friends if you had been together before she died, so people are like “oh, well, at least he’s just sticking with someone he met while she was alive, and isn’t a creepy necrophile ghost-chaser?” Or would it be better if you met when she was already a ghost, so that people are like “okay, so he’s just open-minded about whether his partners need to still be alive or not and likes the ectoplussy. At least he’s not unhealthily clinging to a relationship after a partner’s death in a way that’s probably unhealthy for him and probably keeping her from Moving On to the true afterlife?”
