Story:

It was only ever meant to be a joke.

A mean one, to be sure, but no true harm was to come from it. It was simple, small vengeance.

Berrytalon had confessed their feelings to their friend, Whiteear. Whiteear hadn’t said anything, not to Berrytalon, at least. It turned out he told his other friend, Cherryheart, about what Berrytalon had said.

Of course, Cherryheart had decided that the whole Clan should know, gosspining about it with seemingly everyone. But even that was not enough for her, being told by Berrytalon to stop wasn’t enough.

When their leader had finished speaking at the gathering, Cherryheart rose and asked if he had forgotten something else to announce, that Berrytalon and Whiteear were mates?

The leader responded, irritated at the interruption, that that is nothing to announce. But what really stung was the way Whiteeye looked away. Cherryheart, still in the center of attention, had pointed it out and asked, faking surprise, if he had denied Berrytalon’s advances.

Berrytalon wanted to get back at her. At them, as Whiteear had started to avoid them completely, but hung around Cherryheart at every given moment.

The plan was cruel, but it was deserved.

They would make those two believe, for only a little bit, that Berrytalon had died.

Berrytalon had practised swimming in the border that separated their Clan from Riverclan, until finally, on a stormy day they were ready.

They intentionally egged Whiteeye on until Whiteeye angrily shoved them, causing Berrytalon to ‘slip’ and ‘fall’ into the river. The current was strong, so Berrytalon followed it, holding their breath as they had practised and waiting patiently to be washed ashore.

They were planning on returning to camp and shocking those two, who would have surely thought Berrytalon died.

But Berrytalon wasn’t the dead one.

It turned out that Whiteeye had leaped in after them in an attempt of rescue, and ended up returning to the surface, still and unmoving.

Berrytalon had told everyone that it was luck they had survived.

But the guilt ate at them and ate at them.

They went to the river, the only place they could think to go, and whispered their apology. Only the wind and waves answered. When Berrytalon stood and began to leave, they heard him.

A cry for help, muffled by the surface, but surely there.

Begging for help.

Berrytalon had to do what he had done for them. They leaped in after.

The Bronx Zoo has just released Flaco's necropsy results.

He was not thriving, as the people championing the ideal of "freedom" claimed.

He was poisoned.

He was sick.

He was suffering.

"Freedom" would have eventually killed him. A building just happened to do it first.

"Postmortem testing has been completed for Flaco, the Eurasian eagle owl that was found down in the courtyard of a Manhattan building a little over a year after his enclosure at the Central Park Zoo was vandalized on February 2, 2023. Onlookers reported that Flaco had flown into a building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan on February 23, 2024, and acute trauma was found at necropsy. Bronx Zoo veterinary pathologists determined that in addition to the traumatic injuries, Flaco had two significant underlying conditions. He had a severe pigeon herpesvirus from eating feral pigeons that had become part of his diet, and exposure to four different anticoagulant rodenticides that are commonly used for rat control in New York City. These factors would have been debilitating and ultimately fatal, even without a traumatic injury, and may have predisposed him to flying into or falling from the building. The identified herpesvirus can be carried by healthy pigeons but may cause fatal disease in birds of prey including owls infected by eating pigeons. This virus has been previously found in New York City pigeons and owls. In Flaco’s case, the viral infection caused severe tissue damage and inflammation in many organs, including the spleen, liver, gastrointestinal tract, bone marrow, and brain. No other contributing factors were identified through the extensive testing that was performed. Flaco’s severe illness and death are ultimately attributed to a combination of factors—infectious disease, toxin exposures, and traumatic injuries—that underscore the hazards faced by wild birds, especially in an urban setting."

The naturalistic fallacy kills animals in horrible ways. The romanticism of what humans want to think of as a "free, wild, pure life" cannot be allowed supplant the reality of injury, sickness, and death. Releasing captive animals (or keeping them from being recaptured) because it's "better" for them to suffer untethered than live a healthy, safe, captive life is inhumane and horrific.

Flaco's life didn't have to end in pain, sickness, and suffering.

Flaco's death didn't have to be tragic.

But once the idea of "freedom" entered the chat, Flaco's fate was unavoidable.

Wolfburn’s Death:

His past with fire didn’t result solely in physical wounds, so when the area around him went ablaze, he sprang for the pond.

It was a smart decision, even if his panic did block him from seeing other routes to safety. However, the flames would end up eating away at every inch of the pond’s edge, and, too terrified to risk leaving it, Wolfburn would grow too tired to keep himself afloat, and would drown.

(it wasn’t a ‘whole forest burns down’ kind of fire, one reason why no one realized what was happening. It was dangerous, and did last a long time, but it also probably seemed worse than it was due to Wolfburn’s PTSD?).

tbh all jiang cheng ships are hypothetically good to me because jiang cheng is just so not in a good place for dating or marriage. no one should wife him up which is why anyone wifing him up has great comedy potential. it is a situation you're putting him in where he's forced to cope with intimacy and the possibility of betrayal or rejection. he's going be thinking about his parents' marriage except for the times he's going to be thinking about his sister and his redacted. and also there is the potential for someone to die horribly and leave him alone with a baby. again.
