What I will say about Taylor Swift fans is i think whatever they are imagining the music to be is far better than the music itself. I saw this one girl on tik tok film herself sobbing to some song on the new album and everyone is clowning her because it was honestly a lot but I was thinking to myself what song has made me sob and I thought of anthems for a seventeen year old girl. And not to compare one to the other because I think anthems is a phenomenal song and broken social scene is one of my fave artists of all time so I’m biased but that’s one song where I think the lyricism is so simple that a lot of the emotional weight is the responsibility of the listener to infer and bear i.e they say ‘used to be one of the rotten ones and I liked you for that’ over and over and I think about my traumatic 8th grade friendship breakup. And yes it can be argued that all songs have intended vs personal meaning but what I am trying to say here is mostly nonsense but also the way I see Swifties doing Socratic analysis on the most obvious shallow lyrics inferring these meanings that aren’t there…they are creating a depth to the music that it naturally lacks. And it is this imagined depth that they are responding to

oh gosh, i used to be such a massive reader. like genuinely addicted to reading, could knock out multiple books in a day. i remember one time when i was in elementary school, the book fair came around, and i asked to go to the nurses office so i could get out of class and look at the books.

i think sometime in middle school, i stopped reading as much, and by high school, i almost completely stopped outside of stuff assigned for class. and even then, i would skim over stuff and just quit a few chapters in.

i've got adhd so my attention span is really short, and my brain just won't function normally when i read, so i find myself rereading the same sentences over and over again to make sure i understand them, which just gets really frustrating. so idk, i stopped reading full-blown books bc of it. which is crazy because i do still love reading, i just hate that my brain's a little wonky and won't let me do it in peace.

a couple years back, i had to take english over in summer school, and it was basically a free reading period, so i ended up reading three entire books that summer, which may not be a lot for some people, but for me, at the time, it was really big. and last year, i finally finished a book that i had started two years prior but put down because it was just fucking insane.

i hope to read more this year, and literally, just last night, i raided my mom's classic lit shelf. planning on reading dracula or the picture of dorian gray!

as for my faves, it's hard to say because every book that's really stuck with me was something i read 2+ years ago, but the party by robyn harding was one i really loved. i read it in 8th grade, and it definitely wasn't for kids, but idk, i've never been one to stick to my age group. emergency contact by mary h.k. choi was a big one for me. i read that in 9th grade as a freshman in high school, i believe, and i followed it up with permanent record also by mary h.k. choi. i really loved both books, which was surprising for me because i'm not really into romance, but what i liked about them was how the entire plots weren't focused on the relationship, like it was more than that.

when you reach me by rebecca stead was a book i read when i was 10, and i still think about it to this day. i get the urge to reread it because my ten-year-old brain couldn't fully understand what was going on, but i did really enjoy it. during that same time in my life, i read the books absolutely normal chaos by sharon creech and a crooked kind of perfect by linda urban. both are books i think about often, especially a crooked kind of perfect, i reread it multiple times.

the most recent book i finished was credence by penelope douglas which…no comment. (literally put it down for two years before picking it up again and then had to put it back down for another six months)

my most recent fave was beware that girl by teresa toten, which i really really loved. although, the ending was a little lackluster, so i choose to ignore it and focus on the parts that i loved, which was pretty much the entire rest of the book.

i also enjoyed we were liars by e. lockhart, which was recommended by booktok before they became a bunch of smut fiends. i really did like that one, i didn't expect the end, and it was a good read to me.

there's definitely more that i've read in my life and enjoyed. i was a big geronimo and thea stilton lover when i was a kid, along with junie b jones and any iteration of a diary that could be found (dork diaries, dear dumb diary, diary of a wimpy kid). but lately, all i read is fanfiction, and i don't even read that much anymore.

i suppose the best way to exercise my brain muscles and get back into the habit of reading is to pick up a book and read, but ahhh, my eyes get so tired, and i already spend so much time staring at words while writing and doing homework. but i do really miss the feeling of being thoroughly enthralled in a book and not being able to put it down.

speaking of a book i forgot, the cheerleaders by kara thomas was a book i read the summer before my freshman year of high school, and it's the book that made me realize i thoroughly enjoy murder mysteries set in high school.

journal #1: secrets & stars

Something I wasn't sure I was ready to happen yet just happened and it was... great?? OK, let me get into it.

I told my dad once that I store my memories in a Russian doll. They just make the most sense that way—one wrapped in another wrapped in another. Maybe it’s the ADHD, maybe it’s the creative house we’ve cultivated, but I can’t help but feel the connection everything has to, well, everything. I told him I think of constellations and pinpoint the starts as the glue of my wandering thoughts.

Storytime! Back when I was 10 we were at the crafts store and I saw these.

And obviously I needed them. I have this friend, Sam (she's more like my sis tho honestly, don't tell her I said that it'll go to her head!!) and she had ones like these in purple. I asked my dad if I could buy them to make my room cool and he was like "Whaaat isn't your room already cool enough? With your posters, your sick guitar? Beanbag chairs?" And it's like c'mon dad, those aren't decorations those are just things. I said as much but he already knew he was getting them for me lol, and all for "the low price of free-99". Lame-o.

So we strung the lights up in my room-- dad had to break out the step ladder to crisscross them on the ceiling for maximum effect, but it was very worth it. When he turned off the light, everything was in this golden glow, and I just remember feeling a little awestruck. "It's like we brought the stars outside, inside!" We both laid on the ground to stargaze for a bit, which is a tooth rotting memory.

I took them down the next day, though. Or started to before dad caught me and was like ??? dude what. So here's the thing, I don't always know what's right in a social situation, I don't always know "what's cool", and so I stupidly bragged about my new stars to the guys at school. What was I thinking? One of em, Ethan (asshole) said having string lights as a guy was... hm. Idk if I'm allowed to say this here but it rhymes with 'baggy'. Yeah. My dad was completely shocked when I told him. Maybe I'm crazy, but he also looked almost... guilty? No clue why that was, or why I noted that, but he just seemed really deep in thought in a way I didn't expect him to be. But that's my dad-- he's an unexpected guy.

For a straight dude, I'd say he gave me a pretty good talk abt it. "Sometimes boys like other boys. And that’s chill. Shouldn't be a big deal. But some people can be mean. Really, really mean." He said one of the mean things they do is call people that word when they think they’re gay. Little 10 year old me was confused. Wtf's that got to do with lights? That's not how I said it because, again, child lmao but ykwim. He said it doesn't. Jerks just wanna pick on others for being different. And what he said next really really stuck with me. “He shouldn’t make you feel like you’re not the boy you know you are just because you want to put the stars on your ceiling. His loss. Only insecure people treat people that way.”

We deemed Ethan "not Mr. Rogers approved" and he helped me restring those lights again, they've been up on my ceiling ever since :)

Jesus I rambled way too long and I was supposed to talk about what recently happened!! Like I said, constellations, Russian dolls. Everything connects.

So, I wasn't sure I was bi till like a year ago. I've always noticed it but maybe was scared of it being true. It's 2026, things have really changed, but tiny towns can still be tiny towns, and I didn't wanna find out if things would change. Especially with dad. Which like, why? Y'kno?? I shouldn't have had any fears about it at this point but sometimes this changes the game for some parents and I didn't wanna lose him. OUGH I'm getting emotional just thinking about it, pull it together AJ!!

I just so happened to remember everything about the stars when out w the old man at the diner. It's our fave hangout. Honestly the only hangout in this tiny ass town. My 8th grade dance is coming up soon and he thinks this is Disney Channel and that I'm gonna ask someone hahaha. C'mon man, no one asks anyone out, it's gonna be like every middle school dance we've had so far and we're all just gonna stand around each other awkwardly XP w/e. He's asking abt the girls, which girl am I gonna ask, blah blah. I just KNOW he does this to be annoying on purpose. It kind of struck a nerve though since it's about this... stuff. But this was my window. Dude, I was so fucking nervous for no reason HAHAHA. I was like yeah, there's some girls I would ask if ppl actually asked... but maybe there's also some boys too. I asked him if that was okay. I know, dumb. 'Hey, do I have permission to be bi?' Nahh. He didn't say anything bc I kept blabbing. "I don't want to hide anything from you, I know I don't have to, please say something" etc etc. Finally he put his hands over mine and like, stared into my soul and just said, "Okay." And I was like, "Okay." My god it was such a fucking relief. He even got a big laugh outta me, talking about my taste in boys, if it's any better than my taste in girls. Um, rude!

So yeah, he let me know this doesn't change a thing. I could've criiieeed, I swear (hey maybe I did a little, shush). But it's done! It's out there! No more secrets!! My friends all already know too, they were the first to, and were happy to hear about dad's reaction. If others find out now, I'd like to think I won't gaf. Everyone I care abt already knows and supports me. As I'm writing this, I'm looking up at the stars on my ceiling. I feel they have new things to show me. I'm hopeful for that, at least. <3

so gray & sid are roommates! they live in a cheap housing option off campus from where they both attend college in rosewood and essentially met through their college's version of craigslist

sid & asa met in the 8th grade in math class... they've known each other the longest of any of the dynamics in the band and have a sort of frenemy / secret crush thing going on bc they've grown up together and always got on each other's nerves...

asa & gray met when asa showed up at sid and gray's place one day to ask sid to be in a band with him. he quickly discovered that gray, though quiet and a little odd (haha. get it? oddities of rosewood?), was really cool & chill and also could play drums!!! so of course he immediately asked him to be in his band!!

the band got together officially because asa pestered sid enough to finally say Fine Okay We Can Be A Band lol... and the rest is history!

1. What is your nickname?

I’ve gotten a few nicknames through the years from different people. One of my fave was K, which was funny because a friend I had made in 8th grade could not remember my name lol. Others are Slim, cause I’ve been fairly skinny my whole life, Hobey cause I guess I have some hobo tendencies with some my aesthetics, DIY approaches and holes in my clothing. Rabbit or Little Rabbit is a cute one a partner gave. Even though it’s gendered, I do have a fondness for one my paternal grandma gave me which was Wildman cause my hair stuck up straight in a wild way when I was a baby and little.

11. Highs and Lows of Last Month

Highs are I’ve gotten back into worldbuilding, which has been a really fun and nerdy past time. I’ve been really falling in love with Heroforge and Inkarnate as programs to create characters, factions, creatures and maps! Other than that, any time I’ve been able to spend visiting home and playing with my parents’ puppies or my nephews (a cat and two rats :3 ). Lows have been getting sick twice in one month and deep lows of depression and social anxiety. Oh and some days at work have not been very cash money at all.

📖 Fave book: for now I have to say this dutch book from a series I have read since I was 11. The series is called “How I survive…?” and has different topics like “How I survive with/without divorced parents?” “How I survive freshman year?” “How I survive with/without love?” and so on. The one Im reading now is “How I survive with/without divorced parents?” and let me say it hits close to how I have been through sophomore year/ 8th grade (to give you an idea cause the school system here works different). So yeah I have to say this book series “How I survive…?”😁 not to mention she is one of my favorite writers ever.

🌼 Fave flower: Blue Roses. I love blue roses, the meaning of “The hope I send you is the stars and the sea” and “I have met many people, but I still like you the most.”… and let me be that kind of roses I want🥰😍 but since they are painted etc, then I prefer white roses or even more Peony. Well, I've always loved this skrunkle dunkle even back in 8th grade, when this show came out for me. I'm 31 now lmao.

I'm a huge fan of Malcolm McDowell, his voice actor, and he brought so much to Mad Mod. You can tell he was having a blast with it. Like he took his normal accent and cranked it to 200.🤣

Mad Mod's design is prob one of my faves too, hard to add what's already been said about it. I also just love extreme body types. Either blorbos or gangly scarecrows. 😜

father and son - yusuf/cat stevens: i honestly got more into cat stevens after watching "harold and maude" for the first time a few years ago and i gotta say, i love his music

made first (never forget - acoustic) - tahiti 80: tahiti80 has the rare distinction of being a band that i found in 8th grade/9th grade and still like listening to. i honestly like the acoustic version better than the regular one though

good song - blur: i had a bit of a blur phase in november/december 2021. what a time

breathless - corinne bailey rae: i feel like this song came up on another music post, but it's still a great song, a great album, a great singer/songwriter

sleazy bed track - the bluetones: first heard this in "scott pilgrim vs the world", a movie that has such a good soundtrack. i listened to it soooo much in high school, especially on my way to school each morning.

love plus one - haircut 100: this song is just so in tune with my core music taste. i think i first learned about it from a vh1 countdown about 80s songs. honestly, the album the song is on is great too

i don't know - beastie boys/miho hatori: a bossa nova influenced song that feels like the theme song of my mid 20s so far

night and day - everything but the girl: i think this is the song that got me into everything but the girl. i have amplified heart on cassette but i need some of their albums on vinyl

try some buy some - george harrison: i'm slowly going through all of george's albums and at this point i'd say try some buy some is my favorite song by him. which is weird because it doesn't really sound like a george song (it isn't but it is, it was written for ronnie spector by george and produced by phil spector blah blah blah). it honestly sounds like a bowie song, so it makes sense that bowie also loved the song and covered it. i could ramble on about why i like this song tbh, but this is long already

a dream goes on forever - todd rundgren: not much to say, i just love listening to todd

I'm technically named after a relative named Samuel. My Hebrew name is Shemuela which is the feminine version of the Hebrew name for Samuel.

Can't remember specifically

3.   Do you have kids?

no but I have 5, soon to be 6, nieces and nephews

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

nope, never. Sarcasm? Never heard of it.

5. What sports do you play/have you played?

I did cross country and track and field in 8th grade but I always finished last. I'm not super sporty but in HS I did colorguard. If you count running as a sport I've done a number of 5ks, 10ks, half marathons, and one full marathon.

6. What’s the first thing you notice about other people?

Their eyes and smile/their facial expression.

Brown

8. Scary movies or happy endings?

Happy endings. I'm not a huge fan of horror movies

i still have my old sketchbooks from…i wanna say 7th/8th grade? in my closet even though the art itself is nausea inducing i still like having it. reminds me of who i was at that time of my life
