influence of pop culture and social commentary are probably some of my most watched topics on yt (even though I prob never finish the videos) not to be a debby downer but something I find most interesting are the longstanding effects and consequences of slavery on black people, and everything dating back to slavery; from the respectability politics of having to look put together and composed when going out in public esp to be taken seriously, (probably) to why black people sing out any time any place at any given moment, to the cultural significance of our family reunions and why no other culture does it like we do. *sigh* I miss going to a school that offered classes about black people in the whole department that focuses on black studies. I love our people and I so love learning about our history and just knowing and understanding us better. anyway, I love hearing ab your hobbies- 💌
i wrote a very long, almost 800-word, response to this, but i scrapped it. so i'm gonna keep this brief.
i grew up in a white neighborhood, very, very insecure about my race, and i purposely avoided thinking about those topics because they felt like someone was forcing me to look in a mirror that i was trying my hardest to pretend wasn't there.
aside from that, i was just generally detached from my racial identity because i was branded "white-washed" from a very young age. before i, or anyone my age at the time, was even aware of race, and that played a big role in how i viewed myself.
i wasn't close to any of my family except my mom, and she's way light-skinned, so her experiences weren't the same as mine (she also grew up in brooklyn, pre-gentrification). and aside from that, like many black adults in the generations before mine, she harbored some kinds of internalized racism. i was taught to assimilate to the white people around me so as to not appear ghetto while also being criticized for not being black enough.
what a roller coaster, right?
all of that is to say that i never thought about race beyond something that deterred me from fitting in with my peers. so it's been interesting to dive into topics regarding race and realizing how heavily it's weaved into our society because i never associated really anything with race or even thought about it beyond my point of view.
like, i've never thought about the cultural significance of black family reunions because my family stopped going to and hosting them when i was very young. i never thought of it in any capacity as being related to being black.
i think all of the topics you listed are very interesting, but i find myself leaning toward modern-day racial issues and their relation to pop culture and media. i guess it's because they're the ones that attributed to how i felt growing up, and since i've become significantly more aware and accepting of my race and african-american culture, i've felt very strongly about them because it hurts my heart to think that there are little bipoc children who feel the same way i felt growing up.
of course, you can't talk about modern-day racial issues without acknowledging our history in relation to everything we experience today. we've progressed as a society, but progression wouldn't have been necessary if we hadn't been put in those awful situations in the first place, ykwim.
(this wasn't as brief as i intended it to be whoops)

my beef with drake started when my dad made it clear he was a drizzy drake dick rider. i hate anyone my dad listens to as a default 😛 also the lover boy era bullshit had me pissed off bc he so clearly dislikes women… and his face is stupid as fuck too. idk how to explain that bit but i hate his face
FINALLY. someone else who thinks drake is ugly. every time someone has asked if i would fuck drake i've contemplated choking them out for even making me think about. i hate his face and i'm praying on his downfall. aubrey drake graham you will begin to cough in three days.
also having a drake dickrider as a dad is so...like good luck to u girl

i’ve hated drake’s bitch ass since i was in elementary school. some people have spent their lives waiting for true love but i’ve spent mine waiting for that toronto born big-headed botched bbl ass loser to get the lashings he deserves. and the time has finally come. this must be what the rapture feels like
