This is random as fuck but I'm thinking about Henry's royal surname
So I happen to be a bit of nerd when it comes to British royalty, I literally don't have a reason for that except it's interesting to me
I actually really appreciated changing movie Henry's surname, until I found out they're real royal houses and started wondering about RWRB's history
In the book it was Mountchristen-Windsor, obviously modelled after irl royal family Mountbatten-Windsor, although Mountbatten was derived from the German Battenberg family from the Queen's husband, Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, which is also an actual place in Germany. As far as I can tell Mountchristen is entirely fictional?
Book Henry mentioned having a Great Uncle who abdicated because he was a Nazi, which is irl Duke of Winsdor, Queen Elizabeth's uncle (although the reason he stated was for love), so I think? That the lineage was the same until at least that generation. But Queen Mary, Henry's grandmother said she's been serving the country for 47 years, and Princess Catherine, Henry's mother is 60 years old in 2020, born in 1960, approximately the same age as Prince Andrew, Queen E's third child. Henry was born in 1997, and Prince William was born in 1982. So the generational year gap changes there: for RWRB there's four generations, while irl there are five generations in 2020.
So a bit of math here, assuming that the Duke of Windsor's abdication is the same as the real world, which is 1936, so the lineage is the same up to 1936. The book takes place in 2020, so Queen Mary ascended to the throne in 1973, 37 years after the Duke of Windsor's abdication, a reasonable amount of years for one monarch's reign. So that monarch is where things went differently. As for how it went differently...yeah I don't fucking know my brain cells ran out.
But Movie Henry's royal family name is Hanover-Stuart, two actual houses of royalty: King James IV&I of M&G belongs to the House of Stuart (so what the fuck Nick another coincidental connection between your characters) with Anne, Queen of Britain being the last reigning monarch of the House of Stuart (after her death her cousin George of Hanover inherited the British Throne); Queen Victoria was the last reigning monarch of the House of Hanover (her children belonged to the house of her husband: the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, which was later renamed Windsor during WWI). In our world, the House of Stuart went extinct in 1807, while the House of Hanover still has living members in Europe, granted no longer in direct relations to the British monarchy
So what I'm wondering if for movie verse, where the history of the British royal family changes for Henry to have this different surname:
For Hanover, it's possible that for the universe, Queen Victoria's children still bore her name of Hanover and didn't change it during the war, so the rest of the lineup to Henry kept Hanover. But I cannot for the life of me imagine where would Stuart come from given that the line broke off there
... yeah I don't know what point I'm trying to make or what conclusion I drew, but I used up an hour going down this rabbit hole. If my dad knew I was doing math for this instead of doing my calculus homework he'd kill me but whatever
Also I bet neither Casey nor Matthew actually thought this deep about such a minor thing this is how bad my rwrb brainrot is if we don't get something soon I'm gonna go stir crazy

Reality meets Fiction: “It seemed inconceivable to those who had made such sacrifices during the war that you, as their King, refused a lesser sacrifice… My feeling for you as your Mother remain the same, and our being parted and the cause of it, grieve me beyond words. After all, all my life I have put my Country before everything else, and I simply cannot change now.” - July 1938, Queen Mary in a letter to her eldest son the Duke of Windsor, almost two years after his abdication. "I have seen three great monarchies brought down through their failure to separate personal indulgences from duty. You must not allow yourself to make similar mistakes…. The fact is, the crown must win. Must always win." - fictional Queen Mary letter to the new Queen Elizabeth II on the death of King George VI (The Crown).

Spare nominated for a non-fiction award? Don't make me laugh https://ift.tt/nXHzZqa Harry wasn't serving when it was published, and nor was he the first member to put an autobiography out. Pete Docter Talks TOY STORY 5, LIGHTYEAR, and More...
Tumblr media
Pete Docter, Chief Creative Officer of Pixar and director of MONSTERS, INC., UP, INSIDE OUT, and SOUL, spoke with The Wrap recently...
On his way to receiving the Windsor McKay Award at the Annies this year, he talked about his new book, where Pixar is at now, what's up with TOY STORY 5, if he'll direct a feature ever again, his colleagues - such as Andrew Stanton and Brad Bird - going off to pursue other interests, and some reflection on the box office failure of LIGHTYEAR...
I want to talk about his comments on LIGHTYEAR, and what little he could say about TOY STORY 5...
“We’ve done a lot of soul-searching about that because we all love the movie. We love the characters and the premise. I think probably what we’ve ended on in terms of what went wrong is that we asked too much of the audience. When they hear Buzz, they’re like, great, where’s Mr. Potato Head and Woody and Rex? And then we drop them into this science fiction film that they’re like, What?” "Even if they’ve read the material in press, it was just a little too distant, both in concept, and I think in the way that characters were drawn, that they were portrayed. It was much more of a science fiction. And Angus [MacLane], to his credit, took it very seriously and genuinely and wanted to represent those characters as real characters. But the characters in TOY STORY are much broader, and so I think there was a disconnect between what people wanted/expected and what we were giving to them.”
Docter's assessment of LIGHTYEAR is not dissimilar to how Walt Disney perceived the completed ALICE IN WONDERLAND after it had bombed so hard on its initial release in 1951.
ALICE IN WONDERLAND was the first major flop for the studio, not counting the package features, since BAMBI in 1942. After the runaway success of the more familiar CINDERELLA in 1950, this came as a shocking blow. I feel that Walt and his crew knew that PINOCCHIO, FANTASIA, and BAMBI were either impacted by World War II, or the films themselves being ahead of their time (especially FANTASIA, aaaand how!)... With ALICE IN WONDERLAND, already a quite troubled production that spanned a few iterations, it seemed like the consensus was... "The war has been long over... We messed up." Walt made a remark about Alice herself not having heart, and that that wasn't what did it for audiences back when it was released. It seemed like it was too weird for American audiences not familiar with Lewis Carroll's stories, and too much of a bastardization of the original books to British audiences. It seemed like Walt won nobody with that film, and took the failure on the chin.
While Walt withheld most of his animated films from being shown on television, he made an exception for ALICE IN WONDERLAND. The film, in an abridged form, aired as the second-ever episode of the DISNEYLAND anthology program in 1954. No theatrical re-release was in the cards. Walt didn't live to see ALICE IN WONDERLAND enjoy its new life. He had passed away in December 1966, a time when psychedelia and hippie culture and other such things were becoming a thing in America. "Go ask Alice when she's ten feet tall." By the end of the 1960s, prints of ALICE IN WONDERLAND were heavily requested by colleges. FANTASIA had finally turned a profit during its 1969 re-release, and Disney finally gave ALICE IN WONDERLAND a theatrical re-release in 1974, which reportedly got the film into the black after some twenty-three years of existing. It was also one of the first Disney animated features to be given a home video release, too.
Maybe Walt Disney was right, but also wrong about ALICE IN WONDERLAND... Time makes a difference... Just ask other films like... THE WIZARD OF OZ, CITIZEN KANE, BLADE RUNNER, etc. ALICE IN WONDERLAND is now considered one of *the* iconic Disney animated films, it's a favorite of many, its presence in and around the company and the parks and everything else, can't be understated. Much like PINOCCHIO, FANTASIA, BAMBI, and SLEEPING BEAUTY, its strengths helped the film stand the test of time.
I feel similarly about Pete Docter's assessment of LIGHTYEAR, though he does stand by the movie, saying "we all love the movie." I don't think director Angus MacLane nor the writers really "asked too much of" the audience, they made a nerdy hyper-specific movie that was viewed by some as too much of a deviation from the character, especially those who were familiar with the TV series BUZZ LIGHTYEAR OF STAR COMMAND. When the movie was first announced during the Disney Investor Day event in December 2020, Docter made it very clear what that movie was: It was a show-within-a-show movie that Andy loved, and why he wanted the Buzz Lightyear toy for his birthday. They even have that information as a title card in the actual movie... But so many people seemed very, *very* confused on what the movie was. Perhaps the marketing campaign didn't communicate that very well, nor did a weird mishap from Chris Evans when he described Buzz Lightyear as a "real" astronaut that lives in Andy's universe. He's a fictional character in the TOY STORY universe, much like Woody and pals in the WOODY'S ROUNDUP TV show.
So, I wouldn't blame the movie so much, sometimes films just don't catch on with audiences. It's not necessarily the fault of the movie, nor even the audience. Some things just don't appeal, some things come out at the wrong time, the theaters game is ruthless anyways: Make your first impression on opening weekend, right out of the gates, or else the press will be all over your "failure" like vultures. Heck, Brad Bird himself made this gem of a tweet once: "Movies are dreams. The way Wall Street talks about them are nightmares." These ludicrous box office (and even critical reception) narratives are, to me, non-conducive to movies. It's not like LIGHTYEAR was a critical bomb, it had plenty of positive and passing-grade reviews. But this overall narrative of "it was a bomb!" or "it was a big disappointment" overshadows the nuances of these movies, and the elements that DO resonate with those that like them. I was actually quite fond of LIGHTYEAR, even if I didn't think that it was truly spectacular or anything of the sort. And yet, the stuff I love about it? That's all that matters, I own the movie on disc, I'll be repeat-viewing the movie from here on out. I still got *something* out of it. It's not Guillermo del Toro's PINOCCHIO or PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH in my eyes, but hey, I still dug it.
Like, why do you think so many movies made in - say - the 1990s and early 2000s that got negative reception are beloved today by those who grew up on them? And those who appreciated them from the very start? Because times change, tastes change, things get re-evaluated, etc. etc. etc. I feel like with a lot of commentary, exacerbated by Twitter and message board forums and whatnot, basically spells death sentences for movies that don't necessarily hit every beat or live up to certain expectations... LIGHTYEAR worked for some, didn't work for others, but it'll likely hold tight over the next decade or so... And eventually have retrospectives highlighting its strengths, how it was a Pixar film that dared to be a science-fiction space action-adventure, a genre that Western animation often has trouble with. *cough*TITAN A.E./ATLANTIS/TREASURE PLANET/STRANGE WORLD*cough**cough*
So, in a way, I get Docter's humbleness... But it's really not anyone's fault, really. The time just wasn't right for it. Maybe if it was made in 2004, it would've been a blockbuster. Maybe if made far into the future, in maybe the year 2038, it would be a blockbuster. Maybe 2022 wasn't the right year, the right time for it. For what it's worth, it seemed to have a second life on Disney+. Ditto Disney Animation's STRANGE WORLD.
Regarding TOY STORY 5, Docter said:
“Look, it’s great to go back and explore these worlds and these characters, but you want to have a reason, some kind of compelling reason, that you’re making the movie."
"The thing we’ve been really trying to do, and this has been the case for a while, is we’ve been looking at them a little bit like, okay, we’re not planning for the future. When we made the first TOY STORY, we had no idea there would be a TOY STORY 2. We’re just trying to make this movie. But that in making the movie, it takes you places, unexpected places, which is what I love about the creative process. If I knew exactly what I was doing when I started making a movie, there’d kind of be no point in making it. I discover so much along the way.”
"I think it’ll be surprising. It’s got some really cool stuff that you haven’t seen before."
These comments imply that TOY STORY 5 is actually pretty... Well, not far along, but it's been in development for quite some time, and not something hastily cooked up on the heels of LIGHTYEAR's box office failure. I mean, after all, when Disney had announced in a March 2014 investor's call that a third CARS movie was being made, that thing had been in development since 2011 - right after CARS 2 came to theaters. Michael Wallis, the voice of the Sheriff in those movies, confirmed its existence on a podcast in August 2013 and said it would be about Route 99. (Which the movie ended up not being about, but it was indeed the plan early on in development.) If we are to believe Bo Peep's voice, Annie Potts, TOY STORY 4 was on the boards when TOY STORY 3 was being made... Contrary to various Pixar filmmakers saying that they weren't planning on making a fourth film when TOY STORY 3 debuted theatrically in 2010.
"Surprising", "some really cool stuff you haven't seen before"... I made a few posts on here previously that expressed cautious curiosity of TOY STORY 5. If this brings a new voice and new ideas to the table, I'm there. I can take the film or leave it, honestly, but it exists. I remember really not digging the idea of a fourth TOY STORY, until I learned more about it and actually saw the film... So, maybe I'll be seated, maybe June 2026, in the theater and then come out saying "Holy shit, they really ***did*** do it again??" I'd like to see what they've got, at the very least.
Docter also confirmed that next year's INSIDE OUT 2 was pitched to him by its director, Kelsey Mann. That makes me more curious, Docter could very well say "no" to an idea, not so much an INSIDE OUT sequel... So it seems like Docter approves the INSIDE OUT sequel that he is not directing, and how it's going back to ideas that were ditched from the original, namely there being more emotions in your brain than just five...
He also mentioned that Aphton Corbin, director of the SparkShort entry TWENTY-SOMETHING (one of my favorites in the series), might direct a feature. It was previously announced that she had something lined up, but it's not so clear-cut now. "She's playing around and we'll see."
I'll say briefly that I quite like Pete Docter's Pixar. I think his predecessor, John Lasseter, quite frankly needed to go. His mistreatment of women employees a big reason, but also because he was a little too controlling. There isn't a single Pixar film that I dislike (yes, even the dreaded CARS 2), but a lot of the films they made from around 2012-2017 feel like the needle getting stuck. Like them falling back on "legacy", the pictures feeling very Lasseter-approved. So many director firings, too. That hasn't happened under Pete Docter. Lasseter did greenlight ONWARD, LUCA, TURNING RED, and LIGHTYEAR yes, but under Docter, the directors got to make the films that they wanted to make. There's *no way* the TURNING RED we got would've been that very film if Lasseter was still in charge.
Under Docter, it feels like there's a variety in vision and story... LUCA was a very "characters exist" sort of tale that didn't need to be some extravagant adventure or some "meaning of life" kind of thing, it was 90 minutes of two kids in a seaside Italian town who wanted to get a Vespa. You know, sort-of random kid desires. Under Lasseter, there likely would've been some major plot complications mandated along with that cliche "Pixar moment" where the audience has to have their collective hearts slam-banged by a speeding freight train. TURNING RED is about a teen girl who wants to see a boy band and has to deal with a strange problem, and it works perfectly as just that. They feel very character-and-vibes first, and work outward from there. LIGHTYEAR, again, really dug it. Classic old-school style adventure, sci-fi, ego, the inevitability of time, etc. ELEMENTAL looks to be a romantic comedy, less an adventure. Will that too be a vibes-kinda movie? These all feel pretty distinct from one another, and I'm here for it.
So yes, I'm excited to see what's next. ELEMENTAL, ELIO, INSIDE OUT 2, TOY STORY 5... All. Of It.

ur opinion on red white and royal blue reminds me of this one post discussing how a lot of modern queer media with "rep" is just incredibly sanitized and white and it just tells the same story with the same dynamic over and over again. it pushes heterosexual norms and dynamics onto queer relationships and it rarely feels like an authentic depiction of the queer experiences
tbh rw&rb's blue rep was like....okay. it wasn't exactly sanitized since they did have hot n dirty sex (the author is just not good at writing sex scenes) and it wasn't all white since the main character is half mexican but the rep overall was just....boring.
like it literally was handful of fanfic tropes shlunked together. like, ngl, if this book was a fanfic with a similar premise with character i already knew and loved -- it would be passable. and that's the highest compliment i can give it. the character were all...bland. their interests were literally just h*rry p*tter, star wars, and fictional politics. they also had no sex appeal. we were literally just told their character traits and not shown them at all. we were told the two main characters were attracted to each other but this wasn't shown at all -- even when they were having sex. we were told the main character was half mexican and half white, and the only representation of his mexican heritage was through food and him occasionally speaking spanish. there was no heart in this book, even if the story could keep me intrigued enough to finish it (after i took several long breaks in between my reading sessions. it's taken me 3 months to finishing it lol)
the characters were also too perfect in terms of being "unproblematic" like -- you genuinely think i can believe that a crown prince of england would believe in and support efforts to decolonize countries under britain's rule??? this author genuinely though i would believe a fictional stand in for the house of windsor would want to return all the artifacts stolen from other countries??? like these things ARE GOOD but if you don't want a character that supports the opposite then maybe don't write about someone who inherits the legacy of an empire without fully diving into this aspect of their character. that along with how all the characters also talked like they were in therapy with each other and 100% communicated everything they were thinking in a clear and unproblematic way. like this author was clearly terrified to ever show her characters as having done something that could even be perceived as "wrong."
that is what i would say is sanitized about the novel -- the refusal to make interesting characters and to actually tackle more themes that would make the novel and it's world more well-rounded. and then that just translates into sanitizing the rep a bit, both the queer and racial rep, as the characters just become one-dimensional and defined by their marginalization status rather than their character traits. so like the rep in a bubble is okay. but the rest of the novel somewhat ruins it.
anyways, i didn't HATE the novel. like the moving of the events in the story were its saving grace and it was competent. just everything else kinda fell flat. so i do overall agree with you that the representation wasn't authentic in this novel, this the characters were hardly people.

“I hate you,” Henry tells him.
“Lies,” Alex says, still laughing. “You know you love me.”
Henry lets out a heavy sigh. “Well,” he says softly, “that’s rather the problem, isn’t it?”
“What, you think we’d be better off if we still hated each other?”
“I think,” Henry says slowly, “I’d be better off if I could figure out how to stop being so stupidly in love with you.”
It takes a few seconds for the words to really register, as distracted as Alex is by the heat of Henry’s breath and wondering how much it would cost to actually hire a skywriter. Once they do, it takes a full minute before Alex can move. Can breathe. Can think.
Finally, he forces out a whispered, “What?”
When that gets no response, he tries again. This time, his voice actually cooperates. “Wait, what?”
The only response he gets is a soft snore and Alex realizes that Henry, the utter fucking asshole, has passed out on his shoulder.

Speaking of celebrity culture & the literary buzz lately on twitter… youtu.be/hnP0DnCfuNU m.youtube.com/watch?v=oQsHyLRBUzo - some of these are TS selections. Hmm, now that I think of it, that literary reaction video made me wonder if the mysterious non fiction memoir rumored on twitter yesterday could be about Marjorie. That’s be cool, especially since that time period has drawn compelling comparisons to today and its ripples effect- 50s,60s,70s- like Elvis & Marilyn biopics. Her grandparents had to leave Cuba during that time. Jack Antonoff is a Kennedy collector - he wore vintage pin at Grammys. Marjorie song mentions of wishing she kept receipts & was left closet of backlogged dreams. She has a lot of resources -people & access- it is like a puzzle or whodunit- Agatha Christie (Angela Landsbury tales as old as time- weird how it is like an homage- she passed away around release). She likes that type of stuff, CSI, L&O:SVU, Criminal minds, Oz, etc- Shondra Rimes has definitely been an influence. Lol, Olivia H show was spotted in NY recently & was at concert last night. For example- the politics & celebrity culture (Kennedy & Cuba crisis in that era made me think of the Windsor royal family). The Crown or even celebrity involvement with the Ukraine/Russia war. Coincidentally TS ex secretly fought in it- news came out around TS latest album. The sections & stories on evermore & folklore reminded me of TS library (books, TV, film & music) tastes. Like the Taylor & Burton equivalevent of cancel culture. She has always been fascinated & influenced by history, visited museums & sites, picked up vintage items & exposed herself to various cultures. Lol, on the other hand- I think HS could do this too- or maybe they do already. It’s a creative way to work, express themselves but maintain privacy. Revealing their sources without exposing their life fully, yet educate others- relatable & applicable life lessons. Exploitation of kids for sport (Hunger games & Squid games)- reality TV, K-pop, Disney & nickelodeon- topics- cancel culture. History repeats in a way- we don’t always learn from the past… ‘ghosts.’ It’s true that internet like social media has spread things faster & influenced decisions that impact society. In their own way celebrities like HS/1D & TS for example, have utilized their influence and popularity to make their mark on today’s culture. Innovators & trendsetters- they tap into the pulse of society’s interests. They have a special gift/knack/skill to utilize today’s tools to draw ideas from past & present to spin/twist with words/puns/idioms that help their projects go viral globally and influence the future. They are as SM posts have revealed- Scrabble players/ game players. Turnabout fairplay. It is something that those before them were unable to take advantage of- and well, why not? Lol.
Sorry for the scramble of random thoughs- my page refreshes & autocorrects, ugh. Lol. Jotting it down before I lose it like other posts.
I think this memoir is mostly gonna be about Taylor but I’m sure she’s gonna talk all about her grandmother. This book is going to be 544 pages long. It’s gonna have a lot in it. I’m really excited for it.
TS & HS are so well read. Harry is such a poet & Taylor such a storyteller. If they ever worked on something together it would have the power to change the world.

The Crown S5E8 Commentary
To the two people who actually read this, hi I’m finally back with these commentary! Its been a busy last two days but we’re almost done!!
Non-Spoiler Thoughts: Great dramatic episode for the tipping point of the saga that is The War of The Waleses! While I get why we got a look into the politics of the BBC, that storyline paled in comparison to the drama of Charles and Diana. So my main two complaints is: They should have shown us the full scale of the War of the Waleses and the interview’s tone should have been different. The tone they adopted worked within the context of the show and Diana’s characterisation this season but failed as a live recreation. For me personally, I think its crucial for the show to get the public events and live recreation scenes absolutely accurate so it can’t be easily discounted as fully a work of fiction and so it can go hand in hand with the scenes that are fictional - since there is so much free rein around those scenes. For me the live reenactments ground the show for me. Overall, I did enjoy it!
Spoilers Under The Cut:
Okay the ACTUAL Bashir Interview episode Let's goo
Lmaooo William "I might understand it if it was made in my lifetime" PLS HE'S SUCH A MILLENNIAL I like his relationship with Lizzie, it's very sweet Not her comparing changing TV sets to becoming Catholic 😂 Lizzie what are you doing Time to modernise Elizabethh
Diana and Dr Khan my beloved!!
Gsshsjj ohmygod Nov 5 was when Diana recorded the interview And on Guy Fawkes Night - the i r o n y
Tween William is right for setting boundaries but it's also really sad to see She's so alone sigh
I think the BBC sideplot would have been more compelling on it's own if it wasn't going up against the royal family subplots John's right thoughhh about the ethics Also the politics of it all, we really can't escape it huh
It's so funny Dukey wants to do a Queen tribute all while the Bashir interview is being arranged behind his back LMAOO THE RUPERT MURDOCH NAME DROP/CALL OUT I CACKLED DHJDJDJ Dukey why are you sucking up to Lizzie so much kdjdkdk NOT JOHN SAYING YES OUT OF SPITE I'M SCREAMING Lmaooo the excitement on Bashir's face that was endearing
Not Earl Spencer being paranoid about MI5/6 and Jepson Look what you did Martin Bashir Oop you've been caught buddy This is why you should always keep your story straight Oh god shut up Bashir not you turning the siblings against each other
Lmaooo they're going hard on the connection to Nov 5th - I wish they actually released it on that date itself it would have been a vibe! From Bashir drawing the connection and William's school covering it We love to see it! Living for the parallels 👏🏾👏🏾
God this was THE LOOK It's happening omg it's happening Let's go Elizabeth Debecki let's see what you're made of I can't decide if the choice not to show a live reenactment of this interview was good or not Definitely takes the pressure off Elizabeth D but still would have liked to see her recreate it. Like Ik we've all seen the original but it would have been nice to see it fully play out in the episode.
John having a whole crisis in the beach is so funny and relatable pls I wonder if he regrets it now
Hohoho this conversation is gonna be intense Glad she's being honest with Lizzie At least you got a heads up Yesss call her out Diana!! Well make the time Lizzie God I wanna hit my head against the wall Take some accountability Elizabeth Windsor
Do you really Lizzie DO YOU DEFEND HER?? NOT HER GASLIGHTING HER NOT THE INTERVIEW COMING OUT ON THEIR ANNIVERSARY DGDJJDJD YOU CANNOT MAKE THIS UP I'M SCREAMING
Ohmygod Dukey you have no idea what's coming OHMYGOD DI PICKED CHARLES' BIRTHDAY SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS TO BE ANNOUNCED WE LOVE the pettiness!!! She deserved to do this Yes is it a little mean?? But Charles put her through the ringer, now it's his turn to be put THROUGH IT
Gsjdjej John breaking the news to Dukey I'm cackling The way his face drops omg John said No ❤ to Dukey's protests and we have no choice but to stan Oh it's gonna be memorable night alright I can't believe the Panorama interview overshadows their anniversary pls shdkdk
Everyone's faces omggg Choose Your Fighter; The Reaction to Tampongate or the Panorama Interview
Okay yeah there's a sardonic edge to Elizabeth's answers as Diana when it should have been more sad esp the iconic "There was three of us in the marriage" but I don't hate the change. It works in the context of the show even if it's inaccurate tonally from the actual interview. Yeah Elizabeth Debecki definitely needed to look more sadder in this interview. The sorrow line did not hit as hard.
Charles throwing a tantrum I can't even Okay she did pull it off well in the end But yeah tonally the performance was off It just needed to be more devastating and wistful.
Not Dukey apologising and resigning dhkdjdd This is so dramatic pls
William's scenes/reactions in this feels loaded after what he has said recently about the interview
Overall a great dramatic episode, just slightly disappointed with the portrayal of the interview recreation.

Social relevance: Sussexes vs Windsors by u/Mickleborough
Social relevance: Sussexes vs Windsors Went down a rabbit hole which referred to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, which made me wonder who were the greater social outcasts: Sussexes or Windsors? for my impression of the Windsors was that they lived off what friends, acquaintances, and social climbers would have them. The exit dates are:- Edward VIII abdicated on 10 December 1936, aged 42;- Megxit took place on 31 March 2020.One Moment in TimeOnce the dust from World War II had settled, some truly extravagant balls - seemingly all (justifiably, from all accounts) called the party of the century - were thrown by the very rich for the elite: other rich people, actors, intellectuals, royalty. The Windsors were invited to all of the parties of the century, apart from one:- Le Bal Oriental, the first great ball after WW2 and dubbed The Party of the Century, thrown in 1951 by Count Carlos de Beistegui at his home in Venice, the Palazzo Labia (Windsors were no show)- The Black and White Ball, a masquerade (men in black tie and black mask, women in black or white, white mask), given by the writer Truman Capote at the Plaza Hotel in New York, in 1966 (Windsors again were a no show) - see Vanity Fair article for some idea of the fuss: archived / unarchived- The Proust Ball, held by Baron and Baroness Guy de Rothschild in 1971, at their hunting estate outside Paris, the Château de Ferrières - so the Windsors were relevant even after 35 years.(The Rothschilds topped the Proust Ball with their Surrealist Ball in 1972, to which the Windsors seemingly hadn’t been invited - then again, the Duke of Windsor had died about 7 months earlier.)When You BelieveWorking royalty’s always at the top of the society tree, even in these republican (ie anti-monarchist) days - there simply aren’t that many of them, so they have curiosity value. So Harry’s position is clear. Meghan probably believes that she belongs to the upper echelons because she’s (cough) beautiful, (cough) intelligent, (cough) charming, and can dispense platitudes, I mean sage advice, that’ll revolutionise society. So to what equivalent function have they been invited? All I can think of is the Salute to Freedom Gala in November 2021.Best leg forward, Meghan! Fabulous A Chorus Line legwork precision with Harry.Every other function’s been a bought awards ceremony or connected with Invictus (requiring no evening wear).Didn’t We Almost Have It AllThe Sussexes believed that, following Megxit, they’d be courted and fêted. Because people would be clamouring to have them, they felt compelled to make it clear with whom they’d mingle: Express archived / unarchived. To be fair, times have changed, and grand private balls no longer are given. The equivalent, I suppose, would be fundraisers, the ones where you dress up and fling on jewels. But the Sussexes have neither bought tables, nor been invited. Before every first Monday in May, we’re entertained by the reasons why Meghan won’t be attending the invitation-only fundraiser Met Gala - it started off with them having no time for such frivolity, and now revolves around concerns for their security (Mirror archived / unarchived).I Have NothingThat’s going to be the case if American River Orchil doesn’t produce anything. And by ‘nothing’, I mean reputation.EDIT: It was a Truman Capote vs The Swans rabbit hole. I can recommend the non-fiction Swan Song by Kelleigh Jephcott-Greenberg. post link: https://ift.tt/a4Dk8Lc author: Mickleborough submitted: April 01, 2024 at 10:23PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit disclaimer: all views + opinions expressed by the author of this post, as well as any comments and reblogs, are solely the author's own; they do not necessarily reflect the views of the administrator of this Tumblr blog. The Designers
Lucien Lelong 1889-1958
The man who saved Paris!!
Lelong saved Parisian couture in the face of the hostile takeover by the Nazis in WW2 has overshadowed his creative legacy.
Lucien Lelong is one of the most important French designers of the year 1920-1930. He was born into a family of designers, destined to make his own path within the industry. Unfortunately, his career was put of hold due to WW1, he was sent to the trenches, where he served as an intelligence officer.

After the war he resumed his career at the same as Coco Chanel’s fashion house was taking off. Besides this Lelong was the one who showed the sharpest business acumen by offering discounts to society women who agreed to be photographed in his dresses. Some of his main costumers were Marlene Dietrich and the Duchess of Windsor.
The business was very successful. By 1926 he employed 1,200 staff and had moved to 16 rue Matignon, off the Champs-Elysées.
Tumblr media
Lelong’s style much like Chanel was influenced by sport and the idea of the body in motion. The word for clothes’ capacity to move with the body was kinétique. He said he wanted them ‘to be constructed in such a way that their true shape would emerge in movement, not at rest’.
In the 1920s in Paris Madeleine Vionnet was associated with draping, Jean Patou and chic, Lelong with fluidity. Dressmaking, in his hands, became engineering. He evolved dresses with narrow pleats that moved with the garment but fell back into place when the wearer was still.
Lecien Lelong Party Frock
The dress and over blouse of grey georgette, the dress was finely pleated, sewn with rows of rhinestones, the waist defined with a band of rhinestones and central crescent shape, the over blouse was sleeveless, sewn with regularly spaced rhinestones and rhinestones band at the bottom
Lucien Lelong was one of the first designers to consider the fashion on more than one level, and by creating clothes as well as accessories and fragrances.
From 1925 to 1950 he created approximately 40 perfumes
Tumblr media
His muse was his second wife, Natalie Paley, she was a Russian princess of the Romanov family, she had a natural elegance that inspired many photographers such as Horst, Beaton , Man Ray.
Tumblr media
After the Wall Street Crash, Paris lost much of its American market and the ‘Garçonne’ style of the 1920s died. ( Patous 1929 collection killed the look by lowering the hemlines to mid-calf)
Natalie was the new look of the 1930s with a slim figure, she would visit his salon to try on clothes and acted as his consultant.
The Evening dresses that Lelong produced in the 1930s still look modern today, as they were influenced by neoclassical drapery, at the time French fashion was entering a decade of crisis, America saw a 90% import tax on French couture. The effected was a flood of cheap copies made in American factories, and many women stopped shopping in France and turned to inspiration of the Hollywood fashion.
Lelong opened his own fashion salon in 1918, he brought in upcoming designs such as, Pierre Balmain, Christian Dior and Herbert de Givenchy. During the famous Dior show in February 1947 at the beginning of the New Look, Lelong was sitting front row to cheer on his disciple.
Tumblr media
For nearly 30 years of the House of Lucien Lelong epitomised Parisian elegance. He was known for his beautiful fabrics and understanding of dresses and evening wear. For heath reasons he closed his atelier in 1948, but he continued his production of perfumes until his death in 1958.
Tumblr media
Jean Patou 1886-1936
Jean Patou was born in Normandy, France and he inspired from a young age to enter the world of fashion. His father, Charles Patou, owned a successful business as a tanner, despite being inspired by his fathers brilliant use of colourful feathers in book binding, Patou only worked with him for a short time before going out on his own.

After a few failed ventures into tailoring, Patou opened his dress shop in Paris, Maison Parry in 1912. Two years later he gained some popularity and thanks to a generous American department store buyer, who purchased his whole collection, WW1 halted the fashion in paris and Patou fought for 5 years on the war.
After the war he came back into confidence and leadership and started the House of Patou on 7 rue St. Florentine in Paris. His sister Madeline Patou was his first muse and his brother in law Raymond Baras, who was a important business partner throughout Patou’s career.
His collection in 1920 and 1921 represented his worldly influences from his time in the war. He drew from Russian influences and his use of scarves as girdles was published in Vogue on October 15 1921 as one of his signature designs.
Tumblr media
One was Patous signature looks was his sportswear for women, which was similar to Chanel. He used jersey, which was originally used for meanswear, to design silhouettes that were easier to move in and for more modern and active woman that emerged in the 20s.
He designed for famous tennis player Suzanne Lenglen, setting a new scandalous trend, calf length skirts and a sleeves cardigan. The new silhouette created lots of press for Patou including a spread in Vogue featuring Lenglen (“ Fashion: Suzanne Lenglen shows how to Dress for Tennis.” Vogue Dec 01 1926).

The free mind-set of the 20's influenced Patou from all directions. He saw a need for simple and functional women's clothing but also saw trends like cubism and art deco as excellent inspirations. The freedom women began to demand during the "Roaring Twenties," including exercising, showing their legs and sunbathing, created a gap in the fashion industry that Patou knew how to fill. It has been said by historians that Patou was known for being a playboy who never married and may have had such a great understanding of the modern woman because he was with so many of them. He objectified them in a way that allowed him to view their needs as well as create designs that appealed to men.

Much of Patou's success came from his boldness in marketing and in his lifestyle, balanced with the simplicity and expert tailoring in his designs. Jean Patou also created many perfumes that helped continue his legacy through to the present, his most successful was ‘Joy’ stated the most expensive sent in the world. Each bottle contained 10,600 jasmine flowers and 336 roses.

CoCo Chanel 1883-1971
Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel was born in 1883, but later claimed that this wasn’t true and that she was born 1893 making her 10 years younger. She also used to disguise her birth place, but CoCo was born in a workhouse in the Loire Valley where her unmarried mother worked, although she would say she was born in Auvergne.

Her mother died when she was only six years old, this left her father with five children who he quickly send off to other relatives. Chanel was sent to an orphanage of the Catholic monastery of Aubazine, where she learnt the trade of a seamstress.
During the 1920s, CoCo Chanel became the first designer to create a loose women’s jersey, which traditionally was a piece of men’s underwear, this created a relaxed style for women ignoring the stiff corseted look at the time. They soon became very popular with many clientele, and the postwar generation of women now saw the corsetry old-fashioned and impractical.
By the 1920s, Maison Chanel was established at, 31 rue Cambon in Paris ( which is still is today) and became a powerful fashion force to recon with. Chanel became a style icon herself with her striking bob and tan, placing her at cutting edge of modern style.

Art Deco (1920-1935)
Art Deco first appeared after WW1 and had a huge effect on the culture of industrialisation and was one of the main attributes to embracing technology.
Art Deco represented many things for different people, it was the style of the fantasy world of Hollywood.
There was different looks of art deco from Art Nouveau style that was often recognised by rich colours, bold geometric shapes, and lavish ornamentation. Art Deco took over many forms of design from the fune and decorative arts to fashion, film, photography, transport and product design. It was seen everywhere.

Harry and Meghan’s escape from the poisonous palace
Tumblr media
HEATHCLIFF O’MALLEY
The Sunday Times, January 12 2020, 12:01am
There was a small twist in the story of Harry and Meghan’s announcement last week that gives an indication of just how poisonous and frankly Machiavellian the modern House of Windsor has become. The young couple, newly returned and refreshed from their six weeks away, wanted to meet other members of their family and officials to discuss their plans to work towards becoming financially independent in a newly slimmed-down monarchy.
Harry was asked to put pen to paper with some ideas for discussion. He was reluctant, on the grounds that such documents normally leak.
He was persuaded and did as he was asked. The document, or its details, was shortly afterwards leaked to The Sun. And then, once he had gone ahead with an announcement anyway, palace officials claimed to have been blindsided by it.
The role of the press is perhaps symbolic (not that anyone is quibbling with The Sun — it was a good scoop), because it lies firmly at the heart of the rift between Harry and Meghan and the rest of his family. The young couple believe themselves to be taking a moral stand against the repeated hypocrisy of the tabloid press. Their argument is that if they, with all the privileges of position, power and fame, don’t do something, then who will?
Some of the rest of the family agree with their analysis, but they part ways entirely with the couple on the solution. They appear united in believing that, while suing one or more newspapers might — at best — result in a famous victory, the royal family as a whole will never win the war and that to try is madness. Better to just take it on the chin.
Harry’s father, in particular, appears keen to make sure the newspapers are on side, which is not surprising, really, given that he may one day soon ascend to the throne and has not been universally popular in the course of his life.
In other circumstances, this division of approach to the media might have been smoothed over, but it is a symptom of a deeper rift within the family itself.
It is quite hard to know who is right and who is wrong in this, and foolish perhaps to even try to decide. Some other members of the family say Harry and — particularly — his wife come across as extremely difficult. They feel they have done their absolute best to create space for the newcomer.
Harry and Meghan, on the other hand, find some other members of the family (with the exception of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh) jealous and, at times, unfriendly.
The fallout began at the time of the wedding in 2018. Really damaging things were said and done. The atmosphere soured hard and early, but few meaningful attempts were made by anyone to heal the wounds.
It is pretty clear to me from conversations with both sides that this exit could suit everyone, at least in terms of narrow self-interest. But there is no doubt Harry and Meghan feel they have been driven out.
Much of this was swirling in the background of the documentary I made with the couple in Africa last October, which contributed to it being among the most psychologically complex few weeks of my working life.
Since the couple were accused of having complained about their own lot in the programme, while surrounded by poverty and neglect, I should probably explain that the blame — if that is the right word — lies mainly with me.
The documentary was my idea, and they were consistent from the start in wanting it to be primarily, and preferably entirely, about their work in Africa. I said that, worthy as that was, I thought it would be odd for the public to tune in for an hour and discover nothing of how the past year had been for them personally. It took a great deal of persuasion to get them over the line.
That said, they are far from naive and certainly knew what they were doing. When I look back, I feel they probably got on the plane to Africa without being entirely certain as to what they would or wouldn’t say to me.
Indeed, I think they only finally made up their minds after a long and private heart-to-heart I had with Harry, overlooking a river at the Halo Trust bush camp in Angola. I’d describe the results — his admission that he had not got over his mother’s death; Meghan’s revelation that she was really struggling with the limelight — as qualified honesty.
And I suspect the purpose was twofold: to prepare the ground for exactly the announcement we saw last week, and to act as a pressure release valve, in the hope that this, of itself, might alter the dynamic within the royal family.
Certainly, when I inquired if Meghan was “OK”, I took her reply — “Thanks for asking, as not many people have” — to refer to the family itself, rather than the public or the media.
When I got back, in many conversations, I repeated the same mantra; that I hoped the couple would take some time off and that, in the interim, everyone might take a deep breath and step back from the brink. And I was far from alone in these sentiments. Most people who had known and worked closely with William and Harry over the years felt the same and relayed similar messages.
My understanding is that William did try, but the impression I have, for the moment at least, is that things have gone too far to be retrieved.
So how is this new world going to work, without dragging the entire royal family into a series of controversies? Can you be a bit in and a bit out? As I understand it, they will definitely continue to support their charities — which doesn’t require royal status — and they would like to continue to assist the Queen, particularly in her work with the Commonwealth.
They appear philosophical about the prospect of losing their titles and becoming, in the end, entirely self-funded. They believe the question of their protection is a matter for the British state to decide.
They do not seem particularly clear yet on how they will support themselves. They have told colleagues they will wait to see what comes up, though they both went into the marriage with a fair amount of their own money; quite a lot of it, in Harry’s case (from his mother).
If I had to guess (and I’m genuinely only guessing), I’d say Meghan might take on a few big roles as a brand ambassador and do some work in television as an executive producer, perhaps on programmes that promote the causes and charities she has long been interested in (like the series on mental health with Oprah Winfrey on Apple TV that was announced some time ago).
I imagine Harry will probably concentrate on the voluntary work he has done over the years — the Invictus Games, Sentebale — and if he were to step into the commercial space, I suspect it would be an area that already interests him, such as eco-tourism.
The couple tell friends they believe this is a positive step that can pave the way for all future younger royals, including Charlotte and Louis, Prince George’s younger siblings. If Prince Charles and William want a slimmed-down monarchy, Harry clearly believes he and his wife need to make the best of it.
It’s a beguiling idea, but it’s not going to be easy. They are keenly aware of the potential to be accused of abusing their royal, or now quasi-royal, status. The media will, understandably and rightly, be looking at it with a keen eye, and the potential for a string of difficult, controversial stories is obvious.
Yet their departure leaves the royal family with a big and difficult issue all of its own. The plain fact of the matter is that Harry and Meghan appeal to a young, multicultural, progressive demographic that, to put it kindly, is not the family’s strongest suit. It is not just that they might lose this group, but that it could actively turn against them.
To state the blindingly obvious, we just don’t know what comes next. If their co-operation in the ITV documentary was qualified honesty, what would the real deal look like?
I have some idea of what might be aired in a full, no-holds-barred, sit-down interview and I don’t think it would be pretty.
I suspect the royal family would carry British public opinion still — perhaps only just — but its international standing is a key part of its value to the British state. If that were to be tarnished, it could be very damaging indeed.
The days ahead will be challenging. Perhaps one of the few positives is that the entire crisis has pushed Prince Charles and his elder son closer together for the first time in years. Harry might allow himself a wry smile at that. But the family urgently needs a meaningful peace deal with the young breakaway couple, because a protracted war would be very bloody indeed.
Tom Bradby is the anchor of News at Ten. Harry & Meghan: A Royal Crisis? will be shown on ITV at 10.15pm today
So what do you guys think? In my opinion Tom makes it sound as if the Sussexes are blackmailing the Royal family. Many people are already stating that. I don't get it, he must know people have problems with comprehensive reading as it is. I'm very disappointed in him. Tom, not Harry obviously. Tom's not helping here.
