Sending out Oscar nomination eve vibes
First things first, as a fan of the human chaos that is the Academy Awards, viewing films primarily through the prism of awards is one of the most myopic ways to look at movies. That there is a whole sub-industry of journalism dedicated to awards horse racing and campaigning never ceases to amaze me - even though I must admit to consuming said journalism (or "journalism").
Going into and out of a screening with "I wonder what this could get nominated for?" as the first thing in your mind is not how anyone should absorb and analyze a film. Awards are for the industry, sure, but they're also markers of taste for a certain group of people at a moment in time. They're good entryways into budding film buffs. Awards are fun; don't try to get too emotionally involved in them.
Okay, putting that aside and fully realizing some of the below will sound hypocritical, I begin with some extremely unlikely stuff I would like to see tomorrow morning, but probably won't happen at all...
That despite the highly questionable 2017 move to take away sole nominating power for Best Animated Feature from the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch (I'm guessing the Academy at-large got sick and tired of the category featuring films they hadn't seen/refused to see), I hope those who opted into voting on Best Animated Feature nominees looked beyond the major American and Japanese animation studios. Did Robot Dreams catch their eye (this was a major hit in its native Spain and France)? Maybe Perlimps (directed by Ale Abreu, who did Boy & the World)? Ernest & Celestine: A Trip to Gibberitia (which I admit I truly enjoyed, although I still hold the original in much higher esteem)? My Love Affair with Marriage? What about The Peasants (directed by the same team who gave us Loving Vincent)? I hope they took the time to give those films a watch, their due justice. If they don't get nominated because they didn't deserve, that's okay. But I want voters (and everyone out there) to realize the world of animation is much more than Disney/Pixar/DreamWorks/Illumination/Netflix/Sony and Studio Ghibli/Toei/Toho Company. There is so much more out there.
That Justine Triet is nominated for Best Director for Anatomy of a Fall. Give us Milo Machado Graner as a Supporting Actor nominee, too.
Another child actor in the acting categories, please. No one pins a 30-year-old Asian American male as a fan of Are You There God? It's Me Margaret. I read the book (one of the few major Judy Blume books I had never read) last year, and adored the film adaptation. But, in realization that I don't think the film is good enough for Best Picture... how about a Best Actress nod for Abby Ryder Fortson? She embodies Margaret beautifully, and strengthens this adaptation with a mature performance. She deserves it solely for escaping the Ant-Man series and not being involved in Quantumania. On another note, Rachel McAdams has taken all of the headlines for Margaret. She's fine, but I completely disagreed with her character's expanded presence in the film, as it took away from Margaret (Blume's book is entirely from Margaret's perspective).
Dominic Sessa. Supporting Actor for The Holdovers. Make it happen, please.
I haven't seen it. And this is a bit self-serving, professionally. But as the Artistic Director for Viet Film Fest, if Trần Anh Hùng's The Taste of Things is indeed deserving of a Best International Feature nomination (which, by looking at reviews, surely sounds like the case), I hope that voters do not punish the film for taking France's spot in Best International Feature instead of Anatomy of a Fall. I think the French believed that The Taste of Things represented French culture better than Anatomy of a Fall, and wanted to spread the love among potential Oscar contenders. Nevertheless, there's been a kerfuffle since France announced Trần Anh Hùng's film as their International Feature pick. Let's put that controversy aside, please.
That actors reward performances that are "showy" and nuanced. I feel like the Discourse over the last two years have been to reward maximalist performances in maximalist movies.
That voters in the music branch stop giving into the trends of amelodic, atonal, and minimalistic film scores (I'll even thrown in film scores that prioritize a "vibe" or "beat" over anything else, truly any score that is meant "not to be noticed"). We're in a moment now where younger directors (and certain auteurs who clearly have limited knowledge in the power of great melodic film music) are telling their composers - some of whom are incredibly capable artists, others not so much - that melody is old-fashioned, has no place in modern "realistic" cinema, and belongs only in musicals and animation. As a pianist/violinist who isn't that good at all and was classically trained through high school, this hurts deep. Don't be so afraid of a gorgeous melody and what it can provide to even movies aiming for realism. If the reactions as I was leaving The Zone of Interest and Poor Things the other nights were any indication, I'm becoming a endangered minority. Perhaps they should ship me to a museum so I can listen to my outdated film scores.
Am I still hurting from the sonic trash that was All Quiet's Best Original Score win last year? You bet.
Godzilla Minus One shocks us all and gets a nomination. Somewhere. Anywhere. Visual Effects? Yes please. Best Picture? Ehh, probably not, but if somehow made it, this kaiju fan would be very happy.
Okay, now for more likely things that'll happen. Some vibes need to go that way too, even if I'm a little more comfortable about the following.
That Killers of the Flower Moon can weather what appears to be a lack of support outside the United States - I get it, many non-Americans are tired of American cinema's racial reckonings on-screen - and solidly find its nominations for Picture, Director, Actress (Gladstone), Supporting Actor (De Niro), Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Costume Design, Production Design. Anything beyond that is a luxury to me - I waffle on the deservedness of Leonardo DiCaprio's performance and I disapprove recent trends in how AMPAS perceives what constitutes a worthy score.
That even though I personally don't think Barbie deserves to be nominated for any of the big awards, I hope it does well in the technical categories it deserves (Cinematography, Editing, Song, Costume Design, Production Design, and Visual Effects). Even if it gets nominated for Best Picture (which I think is a 90% chance right now), I don't mind at all.
Past Lives love. Celine Song? Greta Lee? Teo Yoo?
I think American Fiction is dancing 50/50 on all of its potential nominations right now. At least get Jeffrey Wright in for Actor and Cord Jefferson for Screenplay. Picture and anything else a luxury.
That the Short Film and Feature Animation Branch doesn't confuse professionally edited home movies with a worthy documentary short. Please stop.
For the record, yours truly is on Team Killers of the Flower Moon. And right now? I'm expecting the film to perform like Scorsese's The Irishman (2019) on Oscar night.
There's... a major contender of a film or two out there I'd like to see not do so well on nominations because I did not care for them (Oppenheimer is not one of them, as I think it mostly deserves the nominations that appear to be headed its way... winning those boatload of nominations, though? hmm). Those one or two films shall go nameless so as not to jinx anything. But perhaps you already parsed them out by reading the above.

rereading lfay chapter one! was missing the fic so hard and couldn't help going back to it after getting more hyped about seeing wicked later this year :')
have any other little facts about lfay? maybe some specific unfound parallels to point out? did you intend to make elphaba left handed in the promo photo for the fic?
ps. congrats on the greg awards :))) 🎉🎉
Oh my gosh hi!!!! It's so good to hear from you! Thank you for letting me know that you're rereading, this message made my heart so happy. I'm so excited you get to see Wicked again this year! I just bought my tickets to see the tour again in a few months.
I'm actually so excited you asked about behind the scenes facts, I have a bunch of behind the scenes stuff that I haven't shared. And thank you about the awards, I was super flattered to be nominated/voted for in all of those categories!
Cover Art
As for the cover art, I've always had the head canon that Elphaba is left handed or ambidextrous. However, the real reason I made her left handed was because the cover art is actually a photo of my real hand painted green. I'm right handed, so it was easier to paint my left hand and take the picture with my right. I got black press on nails and everything. The "Love Fae and Yero" letter was paper I stained with tea and I hand wrote the title. I like to craft so I figured that was easier/more fun than photoshopping. It took many tries to find a good angle for the pic and I have a whole folder of the pics that didn't work as well.
Tumblr media
Please let me know your thoughts if you continue to reread, and ask any questions you like. Thank you for giving me the permission to info dump about my story!!!!
Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Love, Fae & Yero"
References to source materials
The original characters were homages to famous pen pal stories (in name only, not in personality).
Amalia- Named for Amalia Balash from Parfumerie (1937 Play) and She Loves Me (1963 Musical) Vicar Mathias Popkin- Named for “Mathias Popkin”, the fictional name given to Klara’s anonymous suitor in The Shop Around the Corner (1940 Film) He is also intended to be the same “Owl in Munchkin Rock, a vicar with a thriving flock, forbidden to preach” from “Something Bad”. Lieutenant Jozsef Fox- Named for Joe Fox from You’ve Got Mail (1998 Film) Jerusha Pendleton- Named for Jerusha Abbott and Jervis Pendleton Daddy Long Legs (2009 Musical) Miss Garland- Named for Judy Garland who starred in In The Good Old Summertime (1949 Film) and of course The Wizard of Oz (1939 Film)
Tumblr media
There were also some lines inspired by these stories. Elphaba says "I wanted it to be you so badly" in Chapter 17: See How Bright which is a line from "You've Got Mail", Glinda and Elphaba visit a Parfumerie, the last line of Chapter 14 is a nod to "She Loves Me", and Glinda says she got the dress for Elphaba at "The Shop Around the Corner". All of the references to them meeting at "eight o'clock" is a nod to the song "Tonight at Eight" from She Loves Me. Elphaba also says "Will he like me when we meet" in Chapter 11, a line and song from She Loves Me. There's likely more I can't think of right now.
In (almost) all of the versions of the pen pal story the girl waits for the guy at a cafe with a rose in a book so he knows it's her, so that scene in Chapter 11 is a nod to that as well. Except in those versions the guy *does* find out it's her but doesn't tell her he's the pen pal right away. I did consider keeping this story more true to that model (meaning Fiyero would realize Elphaba is the pen pal but wouldn't reveal it) but I'd already gotten the idea to have Glinda reveal it at the Ozdust and I didn't want to change that.
The sorcery is inspired by The Wizard of Oz.
The magic I decided to incorporate into the story, primarily teleportation and crystal balls, were inspired by The Wicked Witch of the West’s magic in the movie. When The Wicked Witch of the West first enters she has a red cloud of smoke but when she exits there is fire. Then of course, there is her crystal ball she uses to spy on people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Epilogue: The Badlands
My decision to have Elphaba and Fiyero go to the Badlands was largely inspired by earlier drafts of the musical.
In the San Francisco Tryout Elphaba has a conversation with Nessa during WWOTE about the Badlands. They call it “the bleakest most Ozforsaken place you can imagine” and how no one ever returns from there, and Elphaba says she could because she could fly. She said Animals fled to the Badlands and were so frightened they forgot how to speak.
I was also inspired by this passage in Defying Gravity: The Creative Career of Stephen Schwartz by Carol de Giere about an ending in which Elphaba and Fiyero run into Doctor Dillamond in The Badlands and Elphaba helps him speak.
“It was to take place on a scruffy farm in an isolated area of Oz called the Badlands.” (p. 309)
“He [Stephen Schwartz] liked the down-to-earth feel of having her use natural healing abilities rather than magic. Dr. Dillamond then bleated with difficulty: “El-pha-baaaa.”
“On some emotional and philosophical level, it was why I wanted to tell the story,” Schwartz later revealed about the last scene where Elphaba tries to heal the Animals who have fled to the Badlands. “It’s the fact that it’s completely anonymous and she’ll never get any credit or public affection for it, but she does it anyway.” (p. 310)
I felt the line about staying anonymous was particularly fitting, so I wanted to loosely incorporate his original vision into the epilogue.
Tumblr media
Additionally, some other plot points/dialogue were taken from the San Francisco Try Out, particularly in Nessa and Elphaba's talk in Chapter 28: Sister Sunrise. Elphaba says "So it's you they're talking about, I thought it was another lie about me" and Nessa says "not everything's about you". Fiyero also originally had a line in the Lion Cub scene where he says "you cared about the cub so much it changed everything, what's it like to care about something that much?" which I used as well in Chapter 10: Fair Weather Friends.
It was really cool to see the different versions/drafts that didn't make the cut and use them for this mishmash of different canons.
The story was originally going to be *much* shorter.
I didn’t originally plan to set Elphaba off down The Wizard path. It was just going to be a Shiz-era story and I considered ending it after “An OzDust Do-Over”. I also considered ending it after “She’s Off To See The Wizard” on an ambiguous note, and then maybe continue in a sequel. Then ideas like the sonnet, cave, and trapdoor started coming to me and I realized I had to continue it through. As a writer, I usually tend to make a story darker/more dramatic than I originally set out to do lol.
Lost chapter
There is a “lost” chapter of LFAY that was originally between Chapter 19 “An Honest Go” and Chapter 20 “Out Loud” in which Elphaba helps Fiyero through his test anxiety. It was ultimately cut because it wasn’t serving the grander plot, but the current plan is to use a lot of the dialogue I wrote in a different story I have in mind. It still exists in my draft folder.
Parallels
As for parallels I'm sure there is many that I wrote and forgot about, I may have to reread myself. But one that I particularly like is a parallel between Chapter 17: See How Bright and Chapter 34: Dorothy and the Darkness. It repeats the line : "Fiyero had come…and he’d brought the light back with him."
Elphaba also says "Follow me, Yero?" to which Fiyero responds "Anywhere" three times. Once in the museum in Chapter 19: An Honest Go, once as they're heading into the seedy market in Chapter 27: Mockbeggar Market and once before they're about to leave Oz in Chapter 34: Dorothy and the Darkness.
I'm positive there are more I'm not thinking of, I really went off on the parallels. 😅 Let me know if you ever catch any more!
Bonus: I got bored once and created them on Sims...

Golden Globes Hires Tim Gray; Reveals 2024 Awards Calendar – Variety
Gray’s appointment comes as the Golden Globes on Thursday also announced its new membership board of directors, and finalized the timetable for its 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards. The ceremony, currently scheduled to take place on January 7, 2024, does not yet have a broadcast partner.
As exec VP of the Golden Globes, Gray will oversee its membership board of directors. Gray most recently served as senior VP at Variety; his tenure included deftly steering Variety as editor-in-chief through some of its toughest hours when it was up for sale in the early 2010s, prior to Penske Media Corp.’s acquisition and reinvention of the brand. (Since PMC and Eldridge own Dick Clark Prods. under a joint venture, Gray will remain in the Penske family.)
In 2021, Gray was named print journalist of the year by the National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards. At Variety, he created special reports tackling key issues such as Hollywood and violence, marriage equality, and criminal justice reform. He also is the author of “Variety: An Illustrated History of the World,” and coincidentally, “75 Years of the Golden Globe Awards.” Gray is the foremost authority on Variety‘s history, including its signature slanguage. When it comes to Variety icons, there’s no one like Gray, who boasts an encyclopedic knowledge of the brand. It is truly the end of an era.
“I spent 42 years of my life at Variety, so it would take a special job opportunity to get me to leave,” Gray said. “This is definitely it. Major changes are already underway at the Golden Globes and I think people in Hollywood, and around the world, will be pleased when they see integrity restored while the sense of fun remains. I’m impressed with each person on the board – their experience, reputation, and their high standards.”
As for the Globes’ newly formed membership board of directors, the group will handle selecting, ratifying and accrediting journalists as voting members for the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards. Of the nine board members in total, five are appointed independent entertainment or media professionals and four others are elected from within the Golden Globe Association membership.
Besides Gray, other board members include Judy Lung, vice president, public relations & communications, Toronto International Film Festival; speaker/entrepreneur Neil Phillips; Javier Porta Fouz, the artistic director of Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema; Argentine-American journalist and author Gerardo Prat; print, radio and TV journalist Elisabeth Sereda; and Hollywood Turkish Film and Drama Days founder/president Barbaros Tapan. Prat has been a member of the Globes (formerly HFPA) for two years, Sereda has been a member since 1994, and Tapan has been a member since 2016.
“We are proud of how the Golden Globes has evolved over the past two years and where the organization is headed,” said Hoehne in a statement. “With its unique international footprint and global perspective on the entertainment world, this esteemed and trusted board truly sets the Golden Globes apart as an organization intent on recognizing achievements in film and television with superior credibility and integrity.”
Ernst & Young LLP is back as the accountant handling Golden Globes voting, balloting and tabulation for the 51st year. Meanwhile, the Globes has also released its awards timetable, with nominations set to be announced on Monday, December 11, 2023, and the Golden Globe Awards taking place as previously announced on Sunday, January 7, 2024. The full list of the new voting body and distribution partner will be revealed by October 2, the org said.
Golden Globes can just stay gone. This is completely unacceptable, that not just a former head of Penske Media is running it, but Penske, a virulently rightwing and hateful company will just continue the tradition of awarding the highest bidder. Nevermind hoping for representation. Somebody made damn sure the Foreign Press failed.

OKAY BESTIES!!
I posted this poll ⬇️ so you guys could guess which unlucky Cyberpunk character is getting stuck with my V...
Tumblr media
I was surprised at the amount of votes for Rogue, at one point she was tied with Judy!! I don't know that I've ever even indicated any kind of feelings towards Rogue so it's interesting you guys picked her. One of the votes for other was a pal who wanted to see the results, and one of the Viktor votes was me obv.
So who is it....???
We do a bit of trolling because the true answer was....
OTHER!!!!
What do I mean by "other?" Another character not listed? Nobody? Well...
My V falls in love with Johnny while he's living in her head. Imo that's just what happens to every V canonically, is that they and Johnny form a strange and inevitable love from sharing a body and mind, but anyways!! My girl falls for Johnny and he for her, but they can never truly be together and he's actively technically killing her and they are in the same body. But is that not a perfect way to love? An ultimate closeness? All they have is each other, even when alone, a devotion they can't control. V is his only friend. And this turns into love!! Star crossed, fucked up, impossible love. My V loves him, even though she knows they're both going to be gone soon.
And that time comes, of him being gone- it's an emotional parting and she has to ultimately cope with losing the literal closest person in her life that she had fallen for.
But that's not the end!!
My V is, like me, full of illness and shitty organs and disorders. So she's a regular of Viktor's, obviously, and it's only natural she's developed a crush on the dude who takes care of her and replaces her fucked up organs and does his best to keep her healthy. Even though Johnny becomes her focus for some time, V still has those feelings. And when Johnny's gone, she finally says fuck it and goes for it, and she and Viktor get together as a sweet sweet unethical patient/doctor couple.
So, sorry I deceived you guys by giving you ONE option to pick...except for the people who voted other. Even if it was just to see the results. You guys win. I guess whoever voted Johnny and whoever besides me voted Viktor also technically won.
Your prize? You get to suggest last names for my V, because she doesn't have a real name yet!!
Reply or send to my inbox your suggestion for V's last name but ONLY IF YOU VOTED FOR OTHER, JOHNNY, OR VIKTOR. Eh, you can suggest them even if you didn't. Actually please reply and tell me who you voted for and why bc I'm super curious!!
V reveal tomorrow!! Say peace!! ✌️🦋✨️

Marjorie Main:

An absolute powerhouse, and I like to think was probably a shoulder for judy garland to cry on. Always appears as the comedy foil, but was a total looker in her early years, just didn't conform to Hollywood's beauty standards.

NFL Owner reject a proposal to make penalties for roughing the passer reviewable.
Tumblr media
For the year 2023, the much-discussed NFL standard for roughing the passer will remain unchanged. During the Annual League Meeting in Phoenix on Tuesday, the owners of the league rejected a proposal to make roughing the passer penalties reviewable. The Los Angeles Rams made the proposal, which was one of nine clubs' submissions to an annual meeting about possible rule changes. According to NFL Network's Judy Battista, who reported in late February that the committee reviewed more than 80 examples of roughing the passer penalties and found just three that the group deemed questionable, the Rams' proposal on roughing the passer was not expected to receive support from the league's Competition Committee. The most notable change that was approved related to jersey numbers, allowing certain players to wear zero as a numeral in 2023.

When it comes to including penalties in replay, the league can also refer to previous examples. A proposal to make pass interference reviewable was approved by the NFL in 2019 as a result of a missed pass interference call that affected the outcome of the Saints-Rams NFC Championship Game in 2018.
One year of checking on pass obstruction was enough for the association, which battled to find consistency in administering on surveys of punishments in what is in many cases a careful decision. In 2020, the league ended its ability to review pass interference and hasn't thought about doing so since. In recent seasons, the NFL has paid more attention to roughing the passer, scrutinizing more closely contact with quarterbacks and making it much harder for defenders to stop a quarterback. Given the debates that roughing the passer has sparked, the Rams' proposal was not surprising, but the league ultimately deemed a rule change unnecessary. In Phoenix, a number of other notable club proposals were either tabled or rejected. According to McKay, Detroit's proposal to reinstate a roster allowance for a third quarterback and the proposals to have the ball spotted at the 25-yard line on a touchback on a punt were both put on hold until May.
During a news conference on Tuesday, NFL Competition Committee chairman Rich McKay stated, "I would say there wasn't, you know, I think, by large, people understand that if you go down the path of starting to review penalties and don't just look at our DPI experiment -- one-year experiment -- but penalties in general, there's a lot of issues that go into it." The officiating has been drastically and almost completely altered. bringing it up to the booth after removing it from the field. We voted, and it didn't pass, so it wasn't a long discussion."
According to Pelissero, Detroit also withdrew its proposal to subject all personal fouls to coach challenges, eliminating any possibility of expanding replay review in 2023.
The Eagles also made an interesting proposal about onside kicks, which was based on secondary professional spring leagues. Phoenix tabled it. Instead of attempting an increasingly unlikely onside kick, Philadelphia proposed developing a fourth-and-20 substitution, a down played from a team's own territory with the opportunity to retain possession.
McKay made sense of Tuesday why the board postponed the proposition.
"Okay, so I'll go with the onside kick option, which Philly has suggested for fourth-and-20. McKay stated, "You know, it did not have a lot of support as a committee." I happen to be one of the people who does support the topic being discussed. We tried to show the analytics in the report, which has a lot of analytics behind it. However, I would say that overall, there is not yet a desire to have the side removed.
"I believe that alternatives to attempting to increase the rate of recovery are what people would prefer to talk about." We've always tried to live within that 13 percent to 14 percent range. Because, you know, you don't want to award the team that is behind, we don't want to go higher than that. However, we have set that as a goal, and this year, the number was reduced to 4%. The lowest ever, which led to Philly's proposal.
"I would agree that there's another things to discuss to attempt to make it, to get the achievement rate up. limiting players in the set-up zone, but the play will continue as it was last year for the time being."
During his news conference to conclude the Annual League Meeting, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was also questioned about the current onside kick format in comparison to the failed fourth-and-20 proposal.
Goodell stated, "The competition committee talked a lot about this." regarding maintaining, as they say, "the foot in the game." That seems like a fascinating aspect of the game, in my opinion. As you are aware, referring back to the extra point, I believe that we consider all plays and seek excitement in addition to health and safety considerations. This year, I believe, our success rate is three percent. That is incredibly low.
"That's an important play was one of the discussions we had today on the floor and through the competition committee, I believe. The play can be very exciting. And looking into other options to see if they can get that back. One aspect is fourth and twenty. Although it doesn't look like much, it could be a fun alternative. But in the end, they put that on hold."
The NFL keeps pushing for new ideas and rule changes, especially when they help the league's ongoing effort to improve player safety. The upcoming season of 2023 will not see a great deal of change. That could change in May.

The people who answered these questions are voting for people and ultimately policies affecting my home, children, health care, legal rights, taxes, vehicles, hobbies, military, food, and so much more. Their votes affect whether we go to war and who will oversee our economy. I would never argue that we should have a test before voting and absolutely want every American to vote, but should everyone vote? I think not.
