Vnc 59 spoilers under the cut
Before we begin, please know that my japanese knowledge is very basic, so take everything I say with a grain of salt.
The translation here really did not do the scene justice
What Roland said was more along the lines of "I will always be by your side. There's nothing to be afraid of."
They only took out the 'always' but that one word was actually important because later in the chapter we see
The way the ずっと(zutto) turns to 絶対に(zettai), the alliteration, the way "I will always be by your side" turns to "I can never save you", THE WAY THE PROMISE OF ALWAYS BEING THERE FOR YOU TURNS TO I CAN NO LONGER BE BY YOUR SIDE. I AM SICK.

So Jun used Bach's "Little" Fugue as an example for fugue in the newest chapter. And it's unavoidably the most well-known example when learning fugues in music, as well as the most known to be played on an organ -- which reminds me of the Alteration Engine in S2, as it was similar in shape of one that Vanitas played to save Chloé. (Feel free to add how it could connect with the rest tho.)
Just for the added flavor, fugue comes from the Latin noun fuga, as well relates to the verb fugere which means "to flee", or fugare "to chase". The reason for this is because fugue in music is played in parts where it starts with one voice playing the main melody (the subject) and later has the second voice enter with the same melody but differs in its pitch and key (the answer) thus complimenting each other and creating a harmony, a third voice can enter later and so on.
It's similar to having a conversation on the same idea (subject) but with different views (the answer), and it keeps going back and forth as a chase or fleeing.
In case of Astolfo, which Lady Archiviste comments at the end of ch59, it is his hatred that he keeps chasing after and keeps him going/surviving, but at the same time fleeing from himself as he cannot forgive himself for what he has caused so far due to his trauma.
The different answers can also be what others have weighed in about Astolfo's path, such as Roland wanting him to heal and trying to redirect him from a destructive path he is on while the Church is shaping him into an ultimate weapon against vampires.
So a very cool analogy Jun made with fugue.
---
Lady Archiviste: "A fugue of hatred that has forgotten how to stop."
Me: "Just add a coda and it will be okay lol"

maybe i’m too emotional but i kinda feels dejected when olivier says “hatred can keep people alive” :(
i would’ve said “it’s not fair for someone to live this way, they deserve better” but tbh, the circumstances that they have experienced in life is the source that could boost their motivation or will to live. then, olivier proceeds to say “don’t take that away from him” he’s probably right, however, astolfo has been continuously blanketed in the dark caused by his past traumatic incident (mind you he keeps blaming and loathing himself over and over) and no matter what kind of “source” that drives him to live, he is still a young boy. he’s at the state where he needs a constant care and assurance, also someone who will never give him up despite all that. i truly hope roland will remain by his side, even if he can’t “save” him.
