Requests Open
Tumblr media
🔪 my name's neo or grayson! I've been writing since I was, like, seven, and am finally getting back to doing it publicly (,or trying to)
🐈 at the moment, I write almost exclusively for the legend of vox machina and some chosen pcs from campaign two (*cough* caleb *cough*) this list will probably increase but atm I'm keeping it simple
🔪 i write for interactions between characters and x readers.
🐈 my writing is under '#neo writes' and prompts are under '#prompts tbt'. prompts arent mine.
🔪 disclaimer: I'm not in any association with critical role, and the banner above is just a cropped photo of one of their bumper stickers
🐈 some of my other writing can be found here. I tend to write incredibly triggering things there, but will try to avoid it for requests unless explicitly asked for.
🔪 send some in! and... is it Thursday yet?

I have a speculative mechanics question for fic writing purposes if you feel up to answering it. It's a post-canon fic idea with the Mighty Nein at level 18. As the resident Fjord expert, which do you think would be his most likely spell picks for a 7th level Mystic Arcanum and an additional known spell of 5th level or lower? (It would be a 13 warlock, 5 paladin split in this scenario). Additionally, since paladins get Extra Attack at 5th level I can see him swapping out the Thirsting Blade invocation for something else, but what would be the most in-character replacement for his personality and build?
I took a hot second to think about it. And I apologize for how long this post is, but since you're writing a fic, I thought I'd explain my thought process to help you decide if you want to make the same choices or make different ones. Since you're writing a fic, I'm generally thinking more narratively oriented rather than necessarily mechanical.
The 7th level Mystic Arcanum for Fjord has always been an interesting choice for me since a lot of the available choices are just so much meaner than Fjord, in my opinion. It's either Forcecage (spatial control, which Fjord tends toward), Crown of Stars (works great with his action economy, very pretty, thematically vibes with the Star Razor), or Etherealness (super fun spell, lets him be nosy, weird). Possibly Plane Shift (teleport). Those feel like the most likely choices and provide a good spread to choose from, depending on what you narratively need him to do.
As for spells, little tough since it first requires knowing what he already has. As far as I can gather, these were the last 10 warlock spells Fjord cast, in reverse chronological order:
Counterspell (141, warlock 12)
Far Step (139, warlock 12)
Thunder Step (134, warlock 11)
Hex (134, warlock 11)
Armor of Agathys (134, warlock 11)
Major Image (127, warlock 11)
Enervation (VM x M9, filmed between 125 and 136, warlock 11)
Summon Greater Demon (mentioned in 113, warlock 10, last cast 86, warlock 9)
Banishing Smite (102, warlock 10)
Charm Monster (79, warlock 9)
However, he is also mentioned in 134 (warlock 11) to have Cone of Cold, though he never cast it, so one of those last three spells he no longer has. Which one, I don't know, but I would say either Charm Monster or Summon Greater Demon.
So, based on that, I love to joke that he should take Teleportation Circle (5th, available to him via TCOE additional spells) or Dimension Door (4th) for more teleportation spell hoarding (especially since he regains access to Misty Step at paladin 5). Teleportation Circle allows him long-range teleportation capability he doesn't already have and lets him and Jester to be very annoying. Mirror Image (2nd) is also a great choice for him as someone often in melee range, and it actually echoes a little bit Jester's Duplicity. Suggestion (2nd) is a classic and vibes well with his silver-tongue.
Also, Fjord can learn two spells going from level 12 to 13 since he gains an additional known spell and can replace one spell he already knows. So, if you're stuck between two choices, you can simply replace one he knows that you aren't using in your fic.
Invocations is a hard one. I agree that Thirsting Blade should be swapped out after Extra Attack at Paladin 5. My suggestions are Ghostly Gaze (weird, nosy), Whispers of the Grave (weird, nosy, he keeps asking the clerics to talk to the dead people so why not learn to do it himself), or Otherworldly Leap (mobility, which Travis loves, fun as hell). One with the Shadows has great vibes.
Those are some suggestions I have, mostly oriented toward what both feels right for him but also is useful for him to have in a fic.

Don't be suspicious: Group Stealth Checks in Critical Role - Comparisons!
Finally, we have reached the conclusion of this project. At least, this edition of the project, I may review it in 50 episodes time and update Bells Hells statistics. But for now, we have reached the final post.
If you read all of that and wondered what other posts I am talking about, I would like to direct your attention here, here and here. Those three posts take a look at the group stealth checks performed by each adventuring party that has been the focus of a Critical Role campaign, comparing individual party members, guests, how often they use Pass Without Trace and how much it increases their average!
One may think that by looking at those three posts alone, you can form a good basis of comparison between the groups, but that is where you would be wrong. Because the campaigns span wildly different levels, and I think we can all agree that it is unfair to compare a level 20 party to a level 3 party.
Unfortunately, as Vox Machina's campaign started streaming when they were approximately level 9, and Bells Hells have only just reached level 8, we cannot compare the two. But what we can do is compare both of them to the Mighty Nein! So that's what we're going to do, under the cut!
VM versus M9
One very quick disclaimer: Whenever I am talking about Vox Machina as a group of a certain level, that is an approximation, as unlike the Mighty Nein or Bells Hells, Vox Machina used experience based leveling rather than milestones, which ultimately means that they did not all level up at the same time. Generally, when I say "Vox Machina were x level" it means that the majority of the party were that level, and none exceeded it. I may have done my math incorrectly at some points, in which case please feel free to let me know!
Between the levels of 9 and 17, Vox Machina made 74 group stealth checks, and the Mighty Nein made 54. First, before we get into comparative averages, I want to take a look at how many of these were with Pass Without Trace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see, 60% of Vox Machina's checks had Pass Without Trace up, while only 53.7% of the Mighty Nein's did.
Now let's look at the comparison!
Tumblr media
So it seems Vox Machina scored consistently higher on group stealth checks than the Mighty Nein, even when taking the levels and Pass Without Trace into account! Probably because they had 2 rogues.
M9 versus BH
Between the levels of 3 and 8, the Mighty Nein made 46 group stealth checks and Bells Hells have thus far made 30. Once again, let's first compare their usage of Pass Without Trace at these levels. For Bells Hells, I am simply going to copy over the chart from their post, so excuse the slightly vague title.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That is a huge discrepancy! Only 23% of the Nein's rolls were made with Pass Without Trace, whereas 43% of the Hells' were. Let's keep that in mind when we look at the comparison.
Tumblr media
Overall, Bells Hells are doing better than the Nein did at their level, but the Nein performed better when under Pass Without Trace. Take these values with a pinch of salt, and consider the sample sizes here: Bells Hells have done 17 checks without PWT, while the Nein did 35. And the Nein did only 11 checks with the spell cast, but the Hells did 13.
Ultimately, all of the averages are relatively close together! Vox Machina are a little sneakier, but none of the parties are terrible, by any means!
Finally, because I meant to include this in the individual posts but completely forgot, let's see some records, shall we?
The most group stealth checks rolled in one episode of campaign one was 4, in four different episodes: e4, e47, e92 and e113. The averages for those episodes were: e4 - 18.47; e47 - 36.72; e92 - 27.41; and e113 - 25.68
The most group stealth checks rolled in a single episode of campaign two was NEIN! Yes, really. Nine group stealth checks were rolled in episode 68, most of them wen they were trying to cross that chasm. The average for that episode was 25.39
The most group stealth checks rolled in one episode of campaign three thus far has been 5 in episode 48. The average for that episode was 22.59
Thank you all for reading along this far, I hope you've enjoyed it, and I wish you all a happy Apogee Solstice! Let's hope Bells Hells make it through the night.

I ran into a small stupid thread on twitter, and I shouldn’t let it bother me this much, but you know what really grinds my gears? When some shit on Vox Machina to up lift The Mighty Nein. Even shitting on Bells Hells and we’ve barely started with them! Without Vox Machina we wouldn’t have The Mighty Nein or Bells Hells. I just wish people didn’t act like The Mighty Nein are the superior party when each are iconic in various ways. And when some act like C2 was the good “era” of Critical Role.
Oof, that's rough. I definitely have the same pet peeve. It's just hard to see people judge subjective criteria as if it's objective.
Like, Campaign 2 is obviously better the C1 in production quality, audio and visuals, that kind of thing, because of better budget, etc.
But when it comes to story, characters, etc, that's all subjective criteria and I've definitely seen the same thing of people using M9 to tear down VM or BH. Which it's just like. Absolutely your opinion can be that M9 is the best (for me personally, I prefer the Mighty Nein characters individually but prefer VM as a whole party), but that doesn't make your opinion the "right" one or the only one people can have. I have the same thing when people go off about "I can't believe people are interpreting X character so wrong" as if their interpretation is... objectively right? As if there can't be multiple interpretations of fiction?
Unfortunately, you kind of pinned the tail on the donkey in your ask, you just have to not let it get to you and let it go. Definitely annoying, but all you can do is kind of let it slide because realistically people aren't going to stop pretending their preferences are the correct answer. It's just the way of the internet.

Ask game 🦄✨ to fit your blog theme!
I thought this was going to be an easy ask game but it's already the first one and I'm struggling to choose ahsdjhsdjhasjdha.
🦄 Favourite M9 polymorph: There have been so many great M9 polymorph moments that it's hard for me to pick a top five, let alone my favorite one. So you're getting two because I have no self control: Caleb polymorphing into a T-Rex during the last Avantika battle (the visual of a T-Rex on a ship is great) and Fjord polymorphing into a T-Rex during the VM x M9 battle (that was so cool).
✨ Favourite M9 spell: I 100% believe that Counterspell is one of the sexiest spell, and for me it's even sexier when it's Fjord casting it. Fjord counterspelling Cree so that she couldn't Dimension Door??? Sexy. Fjord counterspelling Trent so that he couldn't Dimension Door??? So fucking sexy.

went to a convention today for the first time since 2019!! i chose a friday afternoon to avoid the crowds (it’s definitely better than a weekend!) and went by myself so i could leave whenever i wanted (i walked artist alley and all the retail stuff and skipped the rest)
it’s always pretty interesting to me to see what’s popular in artist alley:
genshin is soooooooo huge. it’s SO huge. it definitely felt like the biggest fandom at the con. i was legit surprised but maybe i’m just not in hip circles anymore cause idk anyone who plays!!
the big shounens are always well represented but there was less jjk than i’d expected/hoped. i know the anime was two years ago and spy x family is the big thing of the moment but damn .. those 2020-2021 shows that never got their convention moments ..
i saw about as much arcane as i expected but i did not expect 95% of fanart/merch to be of jinx. like intellectually i know that she’s the main character of the show but somehow .. lmao. i did end up buying jayce and viktor posters and someone stopped me to ask where i got them so that was cute
i’m surprised at how little hades i saw. obviously stuff like pokemon or zelda is evergreen but i feel like the popular indies usually get their time too - i still saw stuff for hollow knight, etc
and i’m actually shocked at how little critrole stuff there was. i remember there being a decent smattering in 2019 but i didn’t see more than two booths with a stray m9 or vm print this time. dnd overall felt underrepresented - there weren’t as many retailers selling dice, etc as i’d remembered from pre-covid years. genuinely surprising to me considering how well it’s supposedly doing atm
this entire list was me being like “this thing i thought was really big in 2020-2021 didn’t show up to a 2022 con!” but maybe i just don’t realize how quickly people move on (and/or how absolutely and crushingly popular genshin is)
so now i’m like ... damn .... should i play genshin .......

will never not be entertained by the vm v m9 one shot where team vm all unanimously agreed that jester was the biggest threat, forgetting that beau literally just nixes turns left and right and fjord can deal at least 1d10+ damage from quite literally anywhere on the battlefield and has healing capabilities
