MOONS OF KHANG
Like Trần Quang Trân and Phạm Hậu, Nguyễn Khang was an inventor, and a specialist of lacquer who added metallic powders to lacquer to create vaporous even luxurious effects of hues.
His art is a dialogue between gold and silver, day and light, masculine and feminine, perhaps, a dialogue between the sun and the moon...
A famous painting of his shows fisherman working under the moonlight.
Another one describes a family scene under the sun.
Or it's an opera actress combing hair under the moonlight.
Or two women playing with birds under a bright sun.
Two women, one dressed in golden sunlight, the other in silver moonlight, sit on a vine ( or rather an unrealistic species bearing lavish peony-like flowers), connecting earth with the sky.
No celestial entity depicted here, unless these two graces... An allegory of cosmos, or life, or art. To be auctioned tomorrow by Maison R&C Via @vietnamartleaks

⛅Made this illustration inspired by Kim Thuy's novel "Ru."
Wanted to create a piece that captured my takeaway from the novel as each entry is a lullaby that preserves history that can't be told by the history books. It has to be preserved through the family. In a way, it reminded me of how children's literature utilizes portal-quest fantasies to teach lessons. In a way, this is what family stories do but bring us into the worlds we can learn from.
