for #mabsdrawlloweenclub2021
Day 17: Vampire
Ok, so it might not be easy to find a good daguerreotype of a Vampire but here he is. I think I'll call him Obediah, or Dyer, for short...after he favorite hobby.

Below is the model before shoot:

To create this victorian style portrait, I used window light as the main light source and a reflector, positioned to the left. Below is a set up of my shoot:

Victorian window light portrait evaluation
what was the project theme and what did you think of it?
the project theme was creating victorian style portraits by using natural window lighting and editing them using photoshop. I really enjoyed this project and I would like to create more for my personal work.
what part of the project did you enjoy the most/found most interesting?
working with natural lighting was most enjoyable for me because I prefer taking portraits with natural light.
what new techniques have you experienced?
i have learned to use blending modes and textures in photoshop to emulate a Victorian style image. with these skills I can use them to create more images for other projects.
what techniques would you like to develop further?
using tools in photoshop to create different styles of images to make them more realistic.
which photographers did you research throughout this project?
for this project I researched techniques and equipment that were used in victorian times.
how have they influenced your photographs?
taking inspiration from specific techniques such as a plain facial expressions to keep the image from going blurred influenced my photographs as I wanted to make them look realistic and from victorian times.
which technique did you enjoy the most?
working with window light was my favourite technique to emulate a victorian portrait.
what do you feel like is the most successful part of your project and why?
I think emulating the correct composition for my image was the most successful part of this project because I think they look quite similar and thats what I wanted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
did you encounter any problems in your project?
some days were very overcast meaning there wasn't good enough lighting to take photographs.
what habits of mind did you use throughout this project?
exploring and investigating different techniques and cooperating with my classmates who kindly modelled for me to create my final images.
what would you do differently given the chance to complete the project again?
I would look at more interesting portraits to emulate such as group portraits if I were to do this project again.
discuss any technical issues with your final images?
the model in my final image has a nose piercing which I could have photoshopped out using specific tools.
going deeper; if you were asked to do this project using this technique what would you do? what new ideas do you have?
if I were to do this project again with some new ideas, I would like to create a modern style victorian portrait, using the same facial expressions, window light and compositions but with modern brand clothing such as Nike or Adidas. I found some images from google images which also inspire me as they are quite funny.

Victorian window lit portraiture
23.01.2020
Today in a studio I recreated this image by using window light in the studio.
Tumblr media
My image:
Tumblr media
Because the bonnet hat created quite big shadows on the left side of the face I had to figure out how to reduce them. I used silver sided reflector which help a little bit, then I asked my model to moved head slightly to the window direction which was a great solution to my problem.
Canon 550D
Lens 85mm
1/80  f/4   ISO 400
Final image edited in Photoshop:

I removed some shadows from the face and cleaned background a little bit in photoshop.

Victorian Portraits: shooting
21/1/20
Today we shot our Victorian portraits inspired by our chosen reference images. These are three of my top picks from today edited in a victorian style in photoshop using adjustment layers.
I brought in a bed sheet to use in my images however I ended up borrowing some of my class mates items.
I decided to also experiment with reflections to create a ghostly feel to the image, I found a spot on the tenth floor of the college where there is only ambient lighting (no artificial lights) so I could carry out my shoots according to the brief.
The feedback I received was that my images were more contemporary than Victorian.
Equipment:
I used a 50mm lens on a 1300D canon camera body, a tripod and a reflector along with clothing props.

Victorian Window Light Portrait- Post Production Process
This portrait required quite a lot of optimisation to achieve the vintage look I intended on creating. I used adobe photoshop 2020 to optimise my portrait.
Firstly, I opened my image up in photoshop and checked my histogram, showing that my image was slightly underexposed. I increased the highlights within my image slightly, as I wanted to emphasise the lighter areas of my model’s face.
Tumblr media
I then used the spot healing brush tool to smoothen any little blemishes on my model’s face.
Tumblr media
Next, I added a subtle sepia filter to emphasise the vintage look and to ensure my image looked very old-fashioned.
Tumblr media
Then I looked up a daguerreotype image that I could use as an overlay on top of my portrait to make it look even more vintage and to ensure it looked like it was from the Victorian Era.
Tumblr media
I opened up a new photoshop file and copy and pasted the daguerreotype overlay onto here.
I adjusted and experimented with the opacity and the fill so it would look natural and not too harsh when I went to place it on top of my image.
Tumblr media
I then copied this and pasted it on top of my portrait. I had to adjust the size of the overlay to the same size as my portrait.
Tumblr media
Finally, I exported my image.
Tumblr media
I am really pleased with the outcome of this image as I think it does look very Victorian and I have achieved the original brief successfully.
