Astro obs part 10 (mostly Saturn related lol)
🧸 Individuals with Sun trine/sextile Saturn tend to have a great relationship with their grandparents (if they were a part of their life, ofcours). They usually inherit lots of traits from their grandparents
🧸 Sun trine/sextile Saturn people also have a great moral compass and sense of justice. They follow rules and regulations and are well seen in society (unless Saturn is retrograde, then they still try their best to be exemplary, but they might fail from time to time)
🧸 Most Libra Moons i've met went to law school for their university degree
🧸 Saturn in 1st house people tend to look really good when they get older. When they are young, they might often look older than their age, but once their Saturn Return hits them, they age up like "fine wine" from that moment on
🧸 Saturn in 2nd house individuals literally fit the "old money" aesthetic. Often times they come from a wealthy family. If they don't, then they are very motivated to work hard and become millionares. Bonus points if their Saturn is at 28°/29°, as 28° signifies the household degree (being famously known for your family OR in your family) and 29° signifies long-term fame for completing a (often times) karmic cycle and reaping its rewards
🧸 Saturn in 4th house peeps have always felt like the black sheep of the family. Often times they end up abandoning family traditions in the pursuit of following their own individual path. Growing up, they have often felt lonely in their family and shy around people they weren't familiar with
🧸 Saturn in 5th house individuals take their hobbies and passions seriously. They could pursue one of their hobbies/passions as a career later on. Child prodigies tend to have this placement. If there are other planets in the 5th house, those can give hints on the "talent" (but in the case of Saturn here, it's not talent, just hard work)
For ex. Saturn and Venus in 5th house - pursuing art/fashion/make-up/singing/baking sweets as a career
Saturn and Mars in 5th house - pursuing martial arts/race car driving/working out as a career
Saturn, Mercury and Pluto in 5th house - pursuing drama writing as a career
The exception would be for Saturn and Jupiter in 5th house - these people tend to have multiple talents that they could turn into careers
🧸 Saturn in 5th house is also often an indicator of an unhappy childhood. This child felt like a lot of expectations and responsabilites were placed on him by his parents from an early age. Another meaning of this placements would be that Saturn in 5th house children were brought up by their grandparents
🧸 Those with Saturn in 11th house feel more comfortable befriending people who are older than them. They're also not very keen on the latest technologies and prefer sticking to the ideals of the past long gone (aka they love victorian era and prefer to live like they're a gal/man from the 19th century). They also tend to be interested in politics
Tumblr media
🧸 Earth Venuses and the type of chocolate they love:
Taurus Venus - milk chocolate
Virgo Venus - white chocolate
Capricorn Venus - dark chocolate
🧸 Individuals with Chiron in 5th house tend to struggle with infertility issues from a young age
🧸 Uranus in 3rd house individuals prefer taking short-haul flights when travelling short distances, while Uranus in 9th house individuals prefer taking long-haul flights when travelling long distances
🧸 Neptune in 6th house people make great psychologists and psychiatrists!! Often times these people have had a long history of dealing with certain mental illnesses, but instead of wallowing in their pain, they are inspired to help others overcome their own issues. Their capacity to emphasize with people's emotions is heightened, as they tend to relate to many of their client's symptoms. These people are also fit as somnologists (sleep doctors)
🧸 The sad part of Neptune in 6th house is that they often have to deal with stomach issues :( Their digestive system is extra sensitive, so they need to be careful with what they eat
🧸 Wanna know if you're secretly Jewish? Check out asteroids Hebrewu (271763) and Israel (7507) in your natal chart and your family's natal charts. If you find atleast one of these asteroids aspecting the angles (ASC, DSC, IC, MC), Sun or Moon in your chart and your family's charts, then there's a high chance you've got Jewish ancestry
🧸 In synastry, if your Ascendant conjuncts another person's Ascendant (so your house cusps become overlays), it's very likely that you've experienced the same events during your lives. This person would be your mirrored soul, which can prove to bring a great understanding over oneself
🧸 While we're still talking about aspects in synastry, Moon conjunct Chiron is not for the weak ones!! The Chiron person must display a sense of maturity or atleast be emotionally evolved enough to be able to deal with the Moon person. Chiron can trigger Moon's childhood trauma on a subconscious level, while Moon can trigger Chiron's deepest wounds regarding their house's themes. They can either heal each other or wound each other even more. This conjunction requires a great deal of patience and understanding between Moon person and Chiron person

TFE Tarantulas x reader
I am but a lowly gay disaster who saw TFE Tarantulas and instantly fell. Also, don’t mind using my knowledge of Historical fashion. (Side note: I’ll be returning soon with requests open)
The trek to the cemetery never yielded sorry sights. You’d pass through the trees, stopping to take note of the more unique plants you saw, or at least, you usually would. The sewing machine bag thrown over your shoulder was a bit too heavy for that.
Nevertheless, you dragged yourself up the final hill, until you could see the cobweb covered stone. You breathed in the lively cemetery air, and continued walking.
All was followed by familiar skittering.
“Hey Tara.” You turned yourself around to get a good look at him, with a sly smile on your face. “That tricks getting old”
“It’s not a trick.” He scooped you up into his arms and carried you to his lab, covered in cobwebs, but still feeling like home. “You have come during a great achievement. Watch.” He transformed and hauled himself up onto the ceiling.
A blinding light greeted you like an old friend, and faded just as fast.
A human stood  in front of you. Black jeans, work boots, and a leather jacket covered in green and purple accents. Hair that looked more like a cheap wig than anything else.
“Tara?” You couldn’t help but smile.
He moved towards you, almost unsure of his steps. “What’s this?” He took the bag from your shoulders.
“Well…” You glanced around the lab. “I was wondering if I could.” You paused to take a deep breath, only to blurt everything out, “Can I sew something with your webs?”
His face was too smug for your liking as he ruffled your hair. “Of course. What were you thinking?”
“You’re close on the Holoform, by the way, the hair’s a bit off though.” You took his wrist, lifting his hand off your head. He let you.
There was a fondness hidden in his eyes. “You’re avoiding the question.”
You huffed, but answered anyway. “I don’t know, probably a shirt.”
“What cut?”
You looked him in the eye with the straightest face you could manage. “Button up, nice collar, maybe mid length sleeves.” It took you a moment to truly process what he had said. “You’ve been listening to me talk about my fashion nonsense the whole time?” Your face was a little too warm for the current weather.
Tarantulus led you over to a large patch of webbing. “Of course I have, though I thought you wanted to make one of those Victorian lingerie dresses.”
“Oh I do, but I’m not dealing with insertion lace right now.” You help him tear down the webbing in one large piece of textile, rubbing the material between your fingers. “This might be a bit too sheer for a dress anyways. Could probably still use it for the lace though.”
He shot you a look. “Wouldn’t that make it too sheer for a shirt?”
“I’ll wear it with a tank top or something.”
Silence.
“You look nice, by the way. It suits you…the holoform, I mean.”
His eyes lit up, with what you didn’t exactly know. “You said something about the hair being off?”
“Yeah, what of it?” You two finished tearing down the webbing, and had started to fold it.
You both stepped closer together. “You’ll have to assist me with that.”
You chuckled. “Of course. Anything for you.”
“Do you mean that?” He looked you right in the eye. His expression was easier to read without the visor and mandibles: soft, almost hopeful.
“I wouldn’t have said it if I didn’t.” You tuck the folded webbing into your sewing bag. “Shall we get started?” You held your hand out to him, with a little bow to make the whole thing as pretentious as possible.
He took it with a small smile. “We shall.”

So, June was a month! Felt like several, but apparently still just the one. Usually I measure the length of a month in books read—more books equals a “faster” month, fewer books equals a “slower” one—but that doesn’t work this time. I read nine books, so about my average. I think the number of “this was fine” books skewed things, as did The Hands of the Emperor which was excellent, but also very long.
And yes, I’ve finally read The Hands of the Emperor! It was everything I expected it to be and more, and just lovely and charming and cozy and all of things. I am bummed that my library doesn’t have the sequel, not that I’d be launching into it right off anyway. It’s the principle of the thing. The only reason it didn’t get my Review of the Month is because it’s hard to take photos of ebook covers….
On the opposite end of the spectrum, my TBR shelf book this month was a last-minute scramble and I opted for something short as a result. (And a classic, because I hadn’t read one of those in a while.) Tortilla Flat really hasn’t aged well, folks. Let’s all hope my next classic is better.
The other last-minute addition to this post is DIGGER IS HERE! I got the notice that it shipped late last week but didn’t think it would be coming to my door quite so soon. It has bookmarks, plural, you guys! I would be jumping into it next except that I’ve barely finished Shubeik Lubeik and I need to put space between excellent graphic novels.
Next up, though? One of the ARCs I hauled this month is The Frugal Wizard’s Guide to Surviving Medieval England. I’m going to be starting it today.
(Episode Thirteen is my other hauled book this month. I’d forgotten I’d requested a copy from a book rep.)
Other life events? I finally saw The Importance of Being Earnest performed! Another last-minute thing, that. I heard about it near the end of May and dithered about getting a ticket because the theatre was a bit of a trek, and then went, well, when else am I going to see it… Worth it, and that’s one thing off my bucket list.
Hopefully July has a lot of good books to make up for the kind of average reading month I’ve just had. Wish me luck!
And now without further ado, in order of enjoyment…
The Hands of the Emperor - Victoria Goddard Cliopher, Secretary to His Radiancy, the Last Emperor of Astandalas, invites his lord on a beach vacation. He has no idea how this will change the world—or his life.
8.5/10
Pacific Islander-coded protagonist, cast contains a range of ethnicities and skin tones, 🇨🇦
Shubeik Lubeik - Deena Mohamed A Cairo kiosk owner tries to sell off three wishes. It doesn’t quite go as planned.
9/10

warning: depression, suicidal ideation, death of a child
Shadowlands - Matthew Green Short histories of lost settlements from across the UK.
7/10

7/10
largely Jewish cast, 🏳️‍🌈 (lesbian) secondary character, Jewish author, #ownvoices for Jewishness
warning: anti-Semites, white supremacists, homophobes
The Helios Syndrome - Vivian Shaw A freelance necromancer must help determine why an airplane crashed, while being haunted by a pilot.
7.5/10
🏳️‍🌈 (gay) protagonist, 🏳️‍🌈 (gay/bi) secondary character, 🏳️‍🌈 author
The Dress Diary of Mrs. Anne Sykes - Kate Strasdin A history of Victorian fashion through the lens of a fabric scrapbook.
7/10
The Gifts - Liz Hyder In 1840s England, a woman grows wings, a storyteller comes to London, a wife grows unsatisfied, and a doctor gets ambitious.
7/10
Black British POV character, 🏳️‍🌈 secondary character (gay)
warning: racism, misogyny, animal death, medical content
The Road to Roswell - Connie Willis Francie travels to Roswell to save her college roommate from a misguided marriage, and promptly finds herself on an involuntary road trip with an alien.
6.5/10
Tortilla Flat - John Steinbeck A group of friends ramble around old-time Monterey.
3.5/10
multiracial protagonists, largely BIPOC cast
warning: racism, misogyny, alcohol, racial slurs
The Gay Best Friend - Nicolas DiDomizio Dom’s best friends are getting married! Which is great, except he’s having to keep secrets for both of them and maybe he needs to think a bit about expectations and authenticity.

I’ve been wanting to write about Sherlock’s memento mori ring for ages, but I’ve never. Quite. Been able to figure out what to make of it.
It’s just slightly weird, to have the reminder of the inevitability of death on the hand of a man who would refuse to let our main character die as he thought inevitable.
It could be a red herring (if symbolism that’s never explicitly called out could even be that—which I’m kind of iffy about and wouldn’t really agree with as a concept), except that he’s still wearing the thing after the time skip when his intentions became clear.
Okay, memento mori jewelry like Sherlock’s was very popular in the Victorian time period, but it’s not like the series really cares about that most of the time. They sort of vaguely follow the fashion, when it’s convenient, and that’s it.
So looking up more things about memento mori:
The Danse Macabre, and a symbol of Death Itself: Really that would suit William better, wouldn’t it?
The explicitness of the religion at the time tying death to final judgment before God: maybe? Sherlock’s not really a judge, though, although sometimes he helps haul people before one. But he does sometimes take a tack, especially with William, of deciding on his own what needs to be done with William, and that William had to live on and atone and not just die, which I guess is a sort of sentence. But William is really figuring out what his sentence is for himself right now. Sherlock’s not doing that.
The reminder that earthly delights are fleeting: Sherlock is a drug addict, what? He’s not exactly an ascetic monk here. Interestingly, they are kind of a distraction for him when he doesn’t have mysteries or something Higher to focus on, so it’s not totally wrong, but. Hm.
Death and the salvation of the afterlife for the repentant?
You know? Honestly? This seems like the most fitting interpretation for this marker on Sherlock? William “died” with him and began a life anew in a New World (lol) and found a kind of atonement and salvation with Sherlock.
I think I really need to see what William’s eventual conclusion is to finally put this to rest, if I ever do at all. So perhaps I wrote this prematurely. But it is after midnight and I’m tired and so this is what I got.

Victorian Railways R-Class Hudsons
youtube
Its to be pointed out that it at the time that the R-Class was introduced as an express passenger locomotive, they had already thought to start introducing diesels (which they did in July of 1952, as the poor R-s needed extensive work at the Shops after their trip by boat) and thought to phase out the S-classes. Any blame on the R-classes themselves is pure arse covering and ignores how deeply ideological the introduction of the diesels was and how short sighted at this point the VR had become.
(They had already dropped the ball on rejuvenating the post-war rail network by reinforcing the lines, were cutting a lot of branches, scrapped Heavy Harry's two other siblings before completion; thought to introduce diesels but then ordered the R and J classes... and when they finally introduced the diesels, it was in this arrogant, pig-headed fashion that ignored that the diesels at that point were quite new and a lot of kinks to iron out.
They withdrew and scrapped the S-class Pacifics before any preservationists could save them and painted the diesels in the blue and gold VR express livery as a statement... and refused to let steam engine crews rescue or take over trains from broken diesels because it made VR look bad...
One particular incident at Seymour involved a diesel that was hauling a banana train breaking down, and the crew of an already prepped and ready R-Class Hudson being told it was more trouble than their jobs were worth to go and pull that train, so they had to sit by while fitters were called from the diesel depot at Dynon.
No Super Rescue here I'm afraid.
Sorry about the rant, its kind of a weird bone of contention in gunzel circles apparently... and its awfully convenient the foreign manufactured locomotive gets the blame. Hhhhmmmmmm...).
I headcanon these fellas as Scottish, but we Aussies have a whole thing of Scottish folks we adopt as our own (Jimmy Barnes, Malcolm and Angus Young, etc.) and Victoria itself as a very strong Scottish influence in a lot of place names and culture. They are solidly Scottish-Australian in my view.

re: the goth fashion history post I just reblogged
from personal experience, as a kid who coveted all the cool romantigoth, victorian goth, mall goth and cyber fashions I saw in magazines, on tv or on the internet (mid-late 2000s, early 2010s) but could never ever afford to exclusively buy from specialty stores, being lowest of the middle class and living in a small town with virtually no way to leave on my own 90% of the time:
diy, regularly visiting fleamarkets/thrift stores, saving up and waiting for sales/gifts for holidays were (and still are) my go to ways to building up my gothy wardrobe!
I know, seeing all the goth online personalities with their hauls and brand deals always decked out in the most elaborate finery makes it seem like dressing goth is inherently expensive and only reserved for the richest of the rich.
BUT THAT'S NOT TRUE AT ALL

Prompt: Hand Stomp
Character(s): Noba
Fandom: Bleach
@badthingshappenbingo
|
Noba landed silently on the roof before leaping to another one. His gaze was set ahead, to his destination. A sudden pressure unlike any he had ever felt before sent him slamming into the ground.
Noba struggled to even lift his head. The soft click of heels filled his ears and he managed to look up.
A young girl looked over him, an impassive look on her face. She wore a Victorian era pink dress, a pink frilly parasol and pink Victorian era shoes. She had long pink hair tied up in pigtails on either side of her head.
The power she was radiating was enough to send shivers down Noba's spine. She walked forward, heels clicking against the shingles of the roof and stepped down hard on his hand. The pressure made it impossible for Noba to even cry out. He gritted his teeth in pain and she ground her heel deeper into his hand.
"You must be Noba!" she said, "I've heard about you from the butterflies!"
Noba simply glared at her. She hummed and tutted.
"That is not very nice manners. When you're talking to nobility it is nice to speak and look respectfully. I must teach you a lesson," she said.
She raised her hand and Noba's body moved to his knees all on its own. His shoulders still felt like there was an impossible weight on them. She closed her umbrella and raised it. She slapped him across the face with it, the tip of it cutting his skin and tearing his hood.
Noba grunted as blood dripped down his face. She hummed, pleased with herself and reopened her parasol.
"Guards, please grab him, I would like to invite him for tea," she said.
Two large creatures grabbed Noba's arms and hauled him up, dragging him towards the girl. She laughed and flicked her hand. A large white door materialized in front, swinging open. Noba was dragged inside.
It was a Victorian style house with modern tech scattered around. There was a white table with a pink frilly tablecloth with three chairs in the center of a small garden to the left. Many assortments of flowers and plants (some even Noba had ever seen before) were scattered around in an orderly fashion.
The minions marched him over to one of the chairs and forced him into it. Noba was just about to run when the girl took a seat and spoke.
"You're in my realm now," she said, "Your powers have no effect. You should sit down. If you are kind and polite, I will let you go,"
Noba, still tense, sat back down. She smiled at him.
"Take off your hood-mask, it is bad manners," she said
Noba shifted, face flushing as a wave of shyness overtook him. He removed it anyways. Noba clenched his fists tight, trying to hide how embarrassed he was. The girl in front of him nodded, content.
"You know my name, may I know yours," said Noba once he had found his voice.
"Oh my, I completely forgot, oh what bad manners. My name is Sheila, pleasure," she bowed her head, smiling wide, "Now let's start this tea party, shall we?"
She clapped her hands and a man in a butler outfit appeared beside her.
"Yes, madam," he said
"Please prepare some tea and sweets for us," she instructed
"As you wish, madam," then he was gone.
Noba messed with his hands, hating the way she stared so intently at him made him feel like an object.
"You are quite cute. Maybe I should make you a doll and keep you in my collection forever," she said
Noba stiffened.
"I like the form I'm in now, though, miss," he said, trying to be as respectful as he could
She squealed and reached over, pinching his cheek. He squeezed his eyes shut and tried to ignore it, letting her do it just in case she took offense to it.
"Oh don't worry, I'd make a doll out of this form. Then I can move you however I want and dress you up. You can serve me!" she said
"I'm sorry, I'll h-have to decline. I would miss my friends," he managed, stuttering halfway through but finishing off strong.
"Boo," she said, pouting.
At that moment, the butler returned with tea and sweets. He placed the cup down in front of Noba and poured it. Noba watched the drink like a hawk, studying the tea pot to see if he could spot one of those pots with the hidden compartments that could hold poison or something. He couldn't really see anything, but he still gazed at the tea cup suspiciously.
"I didn't poison it," the butler said
"Drink, it's rude not to," Sheila said, cheerful as ever.
Noba hesitated and took the tea cup. The cup it had been poured into was an old Victorian era tea cup.
"This is a lovely tea set," managed Noba, unable to hide the tremble in his voice
"Oh thank you!" Sheila said, "I got it from this lovely shop in London. It, sadly, doesn't exist anymore but they sold the most beautiful pieces,"
Noba slowly raised the tea cup to his lips, hands trembling. He took a sip and placed the cup down. He swallowed, the hot liquid slid down his throat. It happened instantly. His vision titled and he fell out of his chair, hitting the ground with a thud.
"You are the first person, human or otherwise, who actually drank the tea! You are such a kind guest!" Sheila said, smiling wide.
Noba's vision was getting darker and darker as Sheila took another sip of her tea.
"You were a good guest and you shall be rewarded for it," Sheila said, "Give him the antidote,"
Noba felt someone lift him up. Something dripped down his throat and his vision cleared. He blinked multiple times before slowly sitting up, gazing weakly at Sheila, who was smiling wide.
"Why don't you stay for dinner," she said, a grin forming on her face
Noba's face dropped.
Ichigo landed on the ground, panting hard as the Hollow's body disintegrated. He lowered his sword.
"Good work," said Rukia
Renji dusted himself off while Chad and Orihime walked closer to Ichigo.
Sudden pressure slammed into all of them and they all were crushed into the ground.
"What the hell," gritted out Ichigo, body struggling against the sudden pressure.
A white door appeared in front of them. It slowly creaked open. The girl who walked out wasn't like anyone Ichigo had ever felt before. Her whole aura was one of power. Walking behind her was a large man in a butler outfit. Over his shoulder was a limp Noba.
"Noba!" exclaimed Ririn, "Let him go you meanie!"
"Okay," said the girl, cheerfully
She signaled to her butler and the man threw Noba onto the ground. Noba bounced on the ground before rolling to a stop in front of a grounded Ichigo.
"Bye-bye!" she said, waving as she and the butler returned through the white door and it vanished behind them.
The pressure vanished and Ichigo rose quickly, darting forward and kneeling beside Noba. He gently shook Noba, trying to rouse the motionless mod-soul.
"Hey, Noba, come on, wake up!" exclaimed Ichigo.
Noba groaned weakly, eyelids fluttering, but he did not wake.
"Let's get him to Urahara's," said Orihime
Chad hauled Noba onto his back and the mod-soul didn't even stir. The group took off to Urahara's place.

Gimme Shelter — or Protecting Plants
I’ll always have a childlike wonder for snow days.
I have friends who have mastered the art of overwintering plants in our quixotic Pacific Northwest climate. They carefully plot and have a plan for protecting their tender lovelies with temporary structures and great migrations indoors where sturdy shelving and proper lighting awaits. I am not like that. As the first of the winter holidays approaches, my container collection of somewhat tender plants sits in an open-air shelter in the back garden where they are protected from prodigious Pacific Northwest rains, yet subject to freezing temperatures that may or may not arrive. This year the existential juggling of a weather forecast, the relative hardiness of my collection, and available indoor space is further complicated by the fact that I just had back surgery. Thus, all heavy lifting (anything over 5 pounds!!!) for the foreseeable future falls to the good nature of my mostly willing husband. All this has me longing for a greenhouse. n Old School ApproachIn 1829 Dr Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward discovered, quite by accident, that plant life could survive nearly untouched beneath glass. Ward, a London physician and ardent naturalist, collected a Sphinx moth chrysalis while on a walk and sealed it in a glass bottle with some damp earth. A short while later, the good doctor discovered a fern spore that had germinated and was thriving in the contained atmosphere. This led to further experiments growing plants in “glazed cases.” Twenty years later, when Ward exhibited his discovery at an industrial exhibition in Birmingham, the original fern was still thriving in its sealed interior.By the late 19th century plant hunters used glass enclosures, then known as Wardian cases to preserve plant specimens during their expeditions, which often involved long boat journeys. In the hands of the Victorians, these simple glass cases became elaborate replicas of ornate green houses. Fashionable parlors proudly displayed a delicate fern or an exotic orchid in a Wardian case as a testament to the household’s connection to the world of science and exploration, the domain of the not-so-idle rich at the dawn of the 20th century. I prefer my plants on the hardy side.
An inventive and elegant solution.
How I Roll…
When temperatures drop, my container plants are shuffled into our unheated garage — usually at the last minute. Truth be told, hauling in snowstorms may have happened a time, or three. Borderline tender plants in the ground are subjected to an undignified wrapping with cut sheaves of ornamental grass and draped bedlinens. I’ve come to believe is it even winter without a mad scramble?I used to have a greenhouse — it’s a lot of work, to say nothing of the question, where would I put it in today’s garden? And while I love the history and provenance of a Wardian case, the actuality is a bit twee for me and, unlike certain Victorian households, I don’t have the leisure time or staff to tend to them.Where is this rambling post headed? Honestly, I don’t know. Winter is for wandering thoughts and ill-conceived plans that with any luck will have passed in a fever dream by the time spring arrives. In my more sensible moments, I’m thinking about building a cold frame, and by “building a cold frame” I mean talking my husband into building it for me. I wait all year hoping for a look at the crabapples in snow.

☕️ historical fashion (fav eras/styles)
I love you so much Karen <3
My love for historical fashion is something I gotta express more because my goodness. It's so beautiful to me. My favorite is Victorian, Edwardian, 1960s and 1970s. Victorian is so large and went through many styles but I love them all. My favorite may be later Victorian evening wear or the mourning attire. I am that person who judges a period drama on it's costumes lol. I love reading about the fabrics and how they did it. I love watching vintage YouTubers talk about their passion for it, do hauls or give info on the garment. Sometimes on TikTok I get videos of museums showing clothes and I can't help but stop and watch it. It's great I love historical fashion!!
send me a ☕️ + a subject and i’ll give you my opinion on it

Top Girls Week 4
The final week before tech. I would be lying if I said tensions didn’t start to run a little high towards the end of the week. Overall though we got through pretty much everything we needed to accomplish during the week.
We had a good start to the week with another round of fittings for Jessica and Katie in the morning. Jessica’s was particularly satisfying for me because she was trying on all the pieces I had pulled from Marigolds for Isabella Bird and the jeans I got from Hobos for Joyce. I felt such a sense of relief and self satisfaction when we were able to put together multiple solid choices for Isabella’s costume. I will admit I was a bit smug with how well the jeans worked as well and that they were practically finalised for Joyce’s costume.

Monday afternoon was when we also started to tackle what would become a major player in my week: the chasuble for Pope Joan. We knew this would be an issue after the first fitting with Gaby last week but it had been shelved until Monday. I reached out to multiple costume rental houses to enquire about renting a piece for the show but I couldn’t help but to feel like this would become a build. I had already mentioned to Mariella, at home, that I was interested in taking it up as a build if necessary to keep the pressure off them and Katie. In a way, I was sort of hoping that the rental houses would turn up short so I would have the opportunity to have my own costume make.

Tuesday consisted of our what we hoped would be our last big internet shopping haul. I found some promising items on Vinted and we got a good pair of Victorian shoes on Amazon. Katie was adamant about getting the orders in to avoid any postal strikes and rely on in person shopping going forward. In hindsight I think this was a bit of an overreaction as there were no postal strikes occurring that week and it just involved Royal Mail shipping. I certainly understand where the concern came from but I think it started to restrict us unnecessarily.

Tuesday evening was the fitting photos meeting with Trish where I took notes. My biggest take away from the meeting was that it would’ve been helpful to have had the meeting earlier to give us more time to make adjustments. For me this meeting made evident the communication issues between Trish and Katie. It felt like an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object. Trish clearly wanted the ability to veto and make changes and Katie had dug into her opinions of some of the costumes and seemed slightly inflexible. I don’t think either one is entirely at fault but they both contributed to the issues. At times the tension in the room was palpable. I felt as if it wasn’t my place to jump in except when mentioning some items we had ordered already. Thankfully Allie and Jenn kept the meeting on productive by giving suggestions and solutions. Without them in the room I think it could have been much more contentious and gone much worse.
I think that meeting also marked the point where Katie pulled back a little in regards to the design. From that point forward she became more resigned and blamed Trish for many changes and issues. Those feelings impacted my big shopping trip the following day on Wednesday. I was sent out to find alternate choices in tops for Kit and Angie amongst other, more general items, we needed. The problem was that I was given almost no reference or even much of a vibe for what I was looking for. All I had to go off of was the notes Trish gave in the meeting the night before which was repeated to me in a rather resigned fashion before I left. The most frustrating part was sending pictures of options I was finding and being told no, while there was discussions in the chat about what could work. I understand this was a quick turnaround from the night before but a touch more guidance would have saved me a lot of time and frustration. What really left me feeling a bit defeated that day was getting back and Katie wanting to save looking at everything until the next day. It’s a small thing to feel upset about but it left me feeling like all that running around wasn’t particularly important.

By midweek we had decided the chasuble needed to be a make since we got no promising responses on our emails. It was also decided that I would be the one to make it which left me both excited and terrified. Discussing my process on the make will need to be its own separate post since the work spanned the rest of the week and into the next Monday morning.
