Black Alternative Music Recs
Not being Black myself, I hesitate to make myself a spokesperson specifically for Black alt artists as I don’t want to be tokenizing or reductive and I’d rather, like, uplift the voices of Black alt people than just make my own lists, BUT, I keep seeing people in the comments of recent posts about Death Grips asking for recs for more Black alternative artists, and I do know a good amount, so as a really basic list I wanted to throw out a few artists I really like—
Light Asylum: Darkwave. Really incredible vocalist, and openly queer. “Dark Allies” is a huge goth club hit but all of her work is great. I’ve seen her live twice and her live concerts are incredible too. One of the bigger Black goth artists.
Ho99o9: Punk/Industrial Hip Hop. Another big one, they’re pretty well known at this point but if you DON’T know them you should. Huuuge variety in sound here, all of it is so fun and solid, absolutely amazing energy.
clipping.: Industrial/Experimental Hip Hop. Really fun and catchy, great lyrics, great mixing, great experimental electronic sound.
Void Palace: Industrial/EBM. Local LA-based act with an amazing industrial dance club sound and vibe. Seen them live and they bring such cool but crazy energy. Really really solid.
O. Children: Darkwave/Post Punk. Really classic gothic sound, amazing vocals, really underrated, theatrical, fun, and moody gothic rock.
Izzy Spears: Industrial/Experimental Hip Hop. Openly gay alternative hip hop artist with a heavy and super danceable beat. I saw him live and he sounded great and had awesome punky energy.
LUSTSICKPUPPY: Punk/Electro-Industrial. Has almost a hyperpop sound sometimes, super high BPM high energy danceable electronic music with a really crazy theatrical style to their performances (kicking myself for missing them last year!). ETA: LSP uses they/them pronouns, corrected now but apologies for missing that irt any older iterations of this post floating around.
Baby Storme: Darkwave/Ethereal Pop. I think she got a bit of popularity on TikTok recently? I don’t use TikTok so idk, but she’s great. Really well mixed, fun, super solid dreamy darkwave with a dancey pop sound intermixed.
Grizz: Darkwave Hip Hop. I JUST discovered this artist, he’s another LA local who just put out a new single that’s getting some attention and he’s really good. Super cool goth fusion sound with really great classic darkwave electronic backing. Check him out!
Cold Gawd: Shoegaze/Post-Hardcore. Iconically sells merch that says “ABOLISH WHITE SHOEGAZE.” Absolute powerhouse of sound; I saw them live and their music sounded torrential, like this intense, powerful storm.
Debby Friday: Dark Electronic/Experimental Hip Hop. Really really haunting and dreamy gothic sound. Collaborates with artists like Boy Harsher. Superbly mixed. Lots of variety in sound but very consistently strong.
Dre Robinson: Industrial/Experimental Electronic. Longtime cEvin Key/Skinny Puppy collaborator. He was on stage with Skuppy during the recent live tour, doing sound and playing the maggot maracas (iykyk). He’s also been involved in a ton of cEvin’s solo work and accompanies him on stage for his live solo shows.
Charles Levi: Industrial/Industrial Rock. Wax Trax!/90s industrial icon, did work for My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult and Pigface. He’s recently had a bunch of serious health problems and has a GoFundMe up of you’d like to donate. He contributed to so much classic industrial rock, it’s crazy.
There’s a billion more. These are just some artists I genuinely really like personally who are Black, and I think all of them deserve a ton of support and recognition as contributors to the alternative scene. There’s so many amazing Black-fronted alternative bands and projects, and I’m just scratching the surface with artists I know and enjoy, Also considered listing some larger names like Yves Tumor and Tricky, but I feel they’re slightly more well known in the mainstream with ~1mil+ listeners on Spotify and I wanted to highlight some slightly more underground voices (to varying degrees—obviously some artists here are more well known than others).
Check them out!! Support Black alternative music!

Ever since you were young, you knew you were meant to be a star.
You were charming, lively, never shut up whenever your mother popped in a musical for Friday movie nights, hell you had personal concerts for each of your birthdays.
But what started it all was when your mother had placed you in a pageant, you were six, a little late to the game, and everyone around you made you feel small.
But that didn’t make you budge because the moment you stood on stage, and began to perform in front of a large (for a pageant) crowd, that’s when you knew you were meant to be on a stage facing hundreds, no, thousands, of people screaming your name. It was your world, and you were gonna make it your bitch.
And so you did.
14 years later
Sitting on your bed, you lazily scrolled on your fake account on Twitter, liking and giggling at everything sweet your fans would say about you. This had become a simple routine you would do every so often, just so you can catch up on your fans, and their thoughts.
It wasn’t until a tweet that was posted an hour ago caught your twinkling eyes.
“Her musics ass I don’t know how anyone listens to that shit.”
It had a few likes, but it was completely ratioed by your fans, calling them names, you felt a tinge of guilt.
You didn’t care what anyone would think of you, but it definitely hurt a bit whenever the persons profile picture would be a certain someone.
You bit the inside of your cheek, every time you think you would forget about her, someone tends to always remind you.
Ellie Williams was a new face in this field, her and her band ‘The Curves’ had just gotten their big break. The band wasn’t new new, they were mostly underground, but their song “Fireflies”
Had completely blown up, even knocking your own song off the charts that had been there for almost two months straight.
Your company said they were a total one hit wonder, wouldn’t get big after this, but boy they were wrong. You didn’t mind, you were actually thrilled to have people who were actually close in age with you, everyone else was older.
You had set your mind to become their new bestie, that was.. until she made it very clear she hated your guts.
“Everyone you did a great job!” You clapped as all your back up dancers smiled and waved a goodbye, your rehearsal for MTV’s award ceremony had just finished, causing everyone to scurry off so the next talent can practice.
You smiled to yourself as you began to make your way backstage, and as you made your way to your dressing room you spotted a new face that you’ve been dying to see.
“Hi!” You practically skipped to the brunette who was busy fixing her guitar, while her band mates all watched in awe.
“Oh- hi! I’m Dina! I’m a huge fan, I’ve been following you since your debut.” Your eyes widen, “it’s so nice to meet you Dina!” You introduced yourself, only to find yourself feeling silly as she had already knew you.
Dina wanted to die right there, and she would have when you decided to engulf the girl into a hug, you heard a chuckle, and you watched as a man came up to shake your hand, “I’m Jesse, nice to meet you.” He said, his attitude more laid back compared to Dina, who was busy trying to steady her heartbeat again.
As you introduced yourself to Jesse, you watched an annoyed Ellie scoff to herself, “Nice to meet you! I really loved Fireflies! And- I also checked out your older works, ‘Come and Float’ is very underrated.” You had held out a hand for her to shake, as her band mates did so previously, only for her to look up at you with a bored expression.
“Okay?” Was all she responded with, causing your hand to fall back to your side, Dina who finally got herself put together again awkwardly laughed, “oh- that’s Ellie, she’s a bit.. shy..” she had said with gritted teeth, and a glare that wasn’t so subtle.
Ellie ignored her and continued to tune her guitar, “oh I better go- I uh.. it was nice meeting you guys.” You said awkwardly, you gave a pitiful wave to Dina and Jesse, in which Dina mouthed a sorry in return.
After about a week, you had gotten to know Dina a bit more, Jesse was sweet too but you just clicked well with Dina, Ellie on the other hand..
Well she was ignoring you, and if she wasn’t she was saying snarky things.
You had completely ignored her rude attitude, thinking she was probably having a tough time adjusting to this lifestyle, until a few nights before the award ceremony, when you over heard her talking to Dina and Jesse.
Everyone knew the walls were thin in the waiting room, everyone but the newbies, and sadly for them, they had placed you next door to theirs.
“Why must you be an ass? She’s been nothing but nice to you Ellie.” You heard Dina’s voice echo, you sat up straight, your back up dancers all hushed each other, wanting to hear this juicy gossip.
“She’s also our senior? Your lucky she’s so nice, cause god knows she can take your attitude to the press and smear your name.” Jesse’s voice was stern, he talked like a dad, which at times would make you laugh, but seeing as this conversation was about you, nothing was funny.
“I don’t give a single fuck who she is, and I don’t give a damn if she talks shit about me to the press, good! Let her, I didn’t ask to be here.” Ellie’s cold voice shouted, causing you to flinch.
Darius, one of your dancers, and long time friend looked absolutely agitated, but you patted his knee to show that you didn’t want a scene.
“You signed the contract ok, you decided this is what you wanted, so don’t come at me with that ‘I didn’t want this, I don’t wanna be here bullshit.’ Okay.” Jesse’s voice got more harsher, it went a bit silent, but you could hear them moving around.
“Look- I can put up with Dina playing her shitty music around, but I’m not gonna be friends with her. That ‘I’m so sweet and kind and everyone loves me’ fake ass personality doesn’t work on me, so you wanna be her friend? Fine. Count me out.”
Ellie shut her guitar into its case and sling it around her, “Have fun playing friends with the Princess” she said, the pet name came out condescending.
You heard them shuffling around once again, hearing the door to their room shutting harshly, you swallowed the lump that had formed in your throat, you didn’t want your friends to see you upset so you placed a bright smile on.
“Who cares what she thinks. How about we pack up and start heading home.” You could tell they were angry, but they knew you as the type to let things fly by, it also didn’t help that you two were seated very close by when the actual award show was live, and it hurt a little when she rolled her eyes when you won multiple awards.
Present Day
You left Twitter and noticed you had zoned out for a bit, thinking of the mean brunette. You laid on your back hoping for anything to take your mind off of her, which was strange, you never really cared what any other artists said about you, but Ellie’s harsh words always stick to you.
You were so wrapped up on Ellie that you almost missed the sound of your phone dinging, you picked up the phone to see Dina had texted you, Compared to Ellie, Dina had become one of your close friends.
Tumblr media
You were confused, you always hung out with Dina, Jesse sometimes when he would tag along. However you never hung out with them with..her, when Ellie told them to keep her out of it they did, so what’s the deal? Before you could even think of a reason your phone had dinged again, it was Chris, your manager.
Tumblr media
You were confused, your company never really called you in and not tell you anything, given that you had saved their company from going bankrupt they never hid anything from you. Sighing you laid your head onto your pillow, drifting off too sleep, Saturday was going to be a very long day..

♡ Underrated bands! ♡
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
🎀 Snow White's Poison Bite Favourite songs: Serial Killer Girl, Will You Meet Me In The Graveyard, Valentine's Doom
This band is so good that I actually couldn't believe that they only had 30,000 monthly listeners when I first found them. They're a horror punk band with all of the aesthetics of an emo band but combined with some horror aspects too. It's really sad that they're disbanded because they were a really good and unique band. I think they're a great band to check out if you like Get Scared, Ice Nine Kills, Misfits, or Motionless In White.
🎀 Make Me Famous Favourite songs: Blind Date 101, Inception, It's Now Or Never, Make It Precious
Make Me Famous was a Ukrainian metalcore band that was formed by Denis Stoff, who was also Asking Alexandria's lead singer in 2016. I know a lot of people didn't like them because they thought the band was copying Asking Alexandria, but I really love their music and I hate that Denis's greed made them break up. If you like metalcore, specifically Asking Alexandria, then they're a great band to check out.
🎀 The Birthday Massacre Favourite songs: Looking Glass, Alibis, Happy Birthday, Lovers End, Remember Me
I know they're probably the best known band here, but they're just so good that I had to include them here. I was first drawn to them by their aesthetic and the fact that they're a female fronted band, but then I ended up really liking their music too. They're a great band for if you love the mall goth aesthetic but don't want to listen to something very heavy. I also just really love Chibi as you can probably tell. If you like Evanescence, New Years Day, or The Pretty Reckless, then I'd definitely recommend checking them out. I also just realised that they're the only band in this post that's still together.
🎀 The Black Box Recorder Favourite songs: Child Psychology, Ideal Home, Kidnapping an Heiress
Their song Child Psychology is pretty popular, but I don't think their other songs get as much attention as they should, which really sucks because they're a really good band I love how bleak and depressing their lyrics are and how Sarah's accent bleeds into her singing. If you like Ethel Cain, Fiona Apple, or Lana Del Rey, I'd highly recommend them.
🎀 The Young Veins
Favourite songs: Dangerous Blues, Cape Town, Nothing Matters But You
I know a lot of people know about TYV because of Panic! at the Disco, but I feel like they don't get enough recognition aside from being 'Ryan Ross's band.' They're lyrics and music and everything are just incredible, as is expected for a band with Ryan Ross, and I wish they were still together because Jon and Ryan are both so talented.

My Top 9 albums of 2023
tagged by @mysterygrl20 tysm <3
my taste in music is kind of all over the place so prepare yourself for a wild ride, although I also listen to a lot of kpop (I've kinda been slacking on keeping up with releases over the past year tho oops) and we definitely have some overlap in favorite albums
I apologize in advance for how long this post is going to become but you're really opening the floodgates by letting me talk about music lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(it's been a very dry year for my favorite metal bands or this list would've been even more chaotic lmao)
1) Dear Insanity... by DPR Ian
while I struggled to rank most of these, there was absolutely no question about my #1 album of the year. I only just discovered DPR Ian in 2023 and he very quickly became my favorite artist ever. you might have even seen me talk about this album an unhealthy amount of times already lol. he's just such an insanely good artist and every single song on this album is just soooo damn good.
part of why I love him so much is also the story he tells throughout his music videos and just how insanely good all of his MVs look and how well the visuals fit the music so I feel obligated to link the MV to my favorite song off this album:
(some flashing lights in this one, folks, be warned)
youtube
2) The World Ep.2: Outlaw by Ateez
everything Ateez releases is immediately getting added to my favorites, what can I say. I didn't have the money to go to their 2023 tour but I did see them live in 2022... absolutely worth the one and only time I ever caught corona. not a single bad song on this album, they're all absolute bangers.
3) Take Me Back To Eden by Sleep Token
I only just discovered Sleep Token in 2023 but I absolutely fell in love with this entire album and their style in general. almost got to see them live but then I ended up getting surgery on the exact day of their concert... :')
4) OO-LI by Woodz
I am a Woodz stan first and a human second. I'm convinced this man is incapable of releasing bad music, everything he does is just so damn good and I love how he explores a bunch of different genres while still making all of his music just sound like him y'know
also honorable mention to Amnesia which is only a single album so it didn't make the list but if you like more eerie stuff and the general vibe of his music, definitely check it out, I love it so much
5) On My Youth by WayV
WayV will forever have me in a chokehold. they've been my favorite NCT unit since their debut and honestly also the only unit I managed to properly keep up with over the last year ashgasj. I just really love their style of music and how they've actually been sticking to it
6) The Name Chapter: Temptation by TXT
It's truly been a TXT kinda year for me, I've been listening to them a lot. there aren't many songs on this album but I still love it so so much, all of the songs are great and Sugar Rush Ride is such a unique title track
7) Dark Blood by Enhypen
honestly Enhypen are part of the reason why I might have to update my top 3 kpop groups to a top 5 lol. all of their albums so far have been great and this one was no different, I still listen to a lot of the songs on it on repeat
8) RUSH! (Are U Coming?) by Måneskin
well what can I say, Måneskin have had me in a chokehold ever since they won the Eurovision and I actually got to see them live in 2023! drove all the way over to Berlin for them and everything, great album with great songs. I love both their more rock-ish songs and their slower songs and this album has a great mix of both (although I wish there would've been some more Italian songs on here)
9) MONO by K.Flay
K.Flay has been one of my more underrated faves for a couple years by now and I'll take any chance to gush about her music. there's just something very unique about K.Flay's music and this album certainly didn't disappoint. honestly, the only reason why I ended up putting this one on the "last" place is that I haven't listened to it as much as the other albums on this list
Honorable mentions!
bc once I start talking about music, I just simply can not stop at only 9 albums and this list isn't quite chaotic enough yet to properly describe my taste in music lmao
ODD-VENTURE by MCND
this is a rather recent one so I haven't listened to it enough for it to make the list, but I love everything MCND put out and this is definitely also a great album! (plus the title track is yeehaw kpop which is incredibly creative of them and I didn't know I needed that in my life)
HAPPYPILLS by Utsu-P
and this is where I expose the true chaotic nature of my taste in music lmao. Utsu-P's music is the perfect clash of world's between teen-me's obession with vocaloid and current-me's love for metal. I didn't include this album bc I still haven't gotten around to listening to all of it, but the songs that I did listen to, I absolutely loved
Phantomime by Ghost
oh you thought you made it through an entire post of me talking about music without mentioning Ghost? Hah, fool. jokes aside, this is an album full of cover songs so I didn't include it but it's still full of bangers. I reached audio cap now but I'll include their Jesus He Knows Me cover bc this was an absolute treat to witness live:
youtube
if you've made it this far without getting whiplash: congrats!
tagging (as always, no pressure, feel free to ignore this): @negrowhat @fallsouthwinter @spicypussywave @thisisworsethanitlookslike @supanuts @buddhamethods @alienwlw and anyone else who wants to do it!

Note
I have seen like zero movies with adult metalheads, where they were serious characters and not just cartoonish joke of a character. Bit sad. 😥😤
I agree that there needs to be more of them. There's not a large pool of movies or media that give metalheads a fair(ish) take, BUT... I do have some stuff I wanna share that I love, and while some of it can feel cartoonish, it's not without its deep cuts either. Let me plead my case...
Tumblr media
Airheads is a movie I will die for. It's got mother fucking Brendan Fraser in it, and it has one of the only roles that Steve Buscemi has played where I kinda wanted to fuck him... Adam Sandler is fine in it, too, oddly enough. And it's just a totally underrated movie I feel like everyone has heard of but rarely watched.
Tumblr media
Lords of Chaos flew under my radar for many years until my best buddy @gomakeawaffle forced me to watch it. It's quiet, heavy, metal as fuck, and does an amazing job of telling about the band Mayhem. The aesthetics alone are worth the watch.
Tumblr media
Okay, Deathgasm is cute and fun, and I'll die on this hill. I've seen so many people get into this movie, spot the preppy blonde and turn it off. Like... if they had just watched another 15 minutes, they'd see that chick turn into a metal-loving battle maiden wielding a fire axe against demons. It's hilarious and adorable, and it's just plain fucking fun. It's also probably got the best metalhead rep of them all.
Tumblr media
Wayne's World... enough said... (That Alice Cooper Scene. LOL)
Tumblr media
Is Brutal Legends over the top? Yes. Is it stupid? Yes. Does it have an amazing soundtrack? Yes. Is it a love letter to all metalheads everywhere? YES. This game is the fucking shit, and it's still fun a fuck to play now as it was on the 360. Eddie is just... ugh, such a fucking charmer (how can you not love Jack Black too??)
Tumblr media
I've been watching Metalocalypse since it first aired on Adult Swim, and I even got to meet Brendon Small (the voice of Nathan Splosion) while I was doing B-roll for Adult Swim Fest in my hometown in 2010. It doesn't have a very decent ending, so like... if no one's watched it, be warned going in. They canceled it, then came back and tried to wrap it up with a long final episode that was pretty meh. Every episode is basically a loose plot followed by a song number and a blood bath, but there's some fun behind-the-scenes manipulation plot that's a blast as it goes on. Also... GILFs... and a spikey codpiece...
Tumblr media
Alright, Onward has nothing to do with metal, but it's got one of the most lovable metalheads I've ever seen. I feel like Barley is a culmination of every metalhead I knew in high school. Fuckin' dork, lovable, just are unapologetically themselves. Also, Gwendoline does have a sweet-ass paint job.
Tumblr media
I mean... Stranger Things really had some rough times, but Eddie Munson stole everyone's hearts, so like... Hnnnn, he's just utter perfection, right down to the musical high horse he charges into battle on. XD
Man... we need more metal content. If anyone has some stuff I should check out, PLEASE PLEASE let me know. <3

Dear listener, if you want music, you can find that practically anywhere online. If you want a journey, try Colourmusic on for size. I promoted this group rather hard on my blog in 2022 because the initial reaction I got from posting their tunes wasn’t insignificant. I got hundreds of hits from Tumblrites just for posting their rare work, and I even had a synesthete on this platform tell me that one tune by them ‘tastes like citrus’. I spent so much time in 2022 firing arcs of fanboy spooge all over my hapless audience I swore I wouldn’t dare bring another post involving this group to Tumblr for a full year. Well, it’s been over a year and my desire to post more music by them has reached a fever pitch. If you’re looking for a far more in-depth view on this group, I have covered their tunes numerous times before. But for those looking for an abbreviated description of what this band brings to the table; all you need to know is that they’re a high concept indie rock group whose modus operandi is to incite the feeling, the sensation of a particular color. For each album, they invoke a new color. They started in 2008 with an orange album (F, Monday, Orange, February, Venus, Lunatic, 1 or 13) that was enthusiastic and energetic. Their second album and magnum opus, 2011's My _____ is Pink, was passionate and playful. They followed it up with a purple album (May You Marry Rich) that is appropriately lush and ambitious, and a blue album that very heavily took its inspiration from the actual element of water. If I’m being perfectly honest, I’m a much larger fan of their pre-2015 work. I’m not even 100% sure if they’re trying to make music based on colors anymore. I’ve spent a lot of time listening to their post-2015 work in the last month and found their 2018 album Swimsuit to be tonally solid, but it was also a very personal and bleak affair that I didn’t necessarily immediately want to revisit for multifarious reasons. I found a decent portion of their ambient and at times upbeat 2021 album Thank Goodness Hell Is Easy To Get Into was a breath of fresh air… although they took a pretty hard nose-dive into stoner rock territory, and stoner rock just ain’t my cup of tea, folks. But not all is lost in their direction, as their most recent works still did their very best to tell a story complete with a rising action, a falling action, and a denouement. If you smash play on the video above, you will be introduced to the very first Colourmusic video I came across in about 2009 or so. These guys made some great and very underrated music videos just over a decade ago and before you say anything, you’re welcome, Tumblr. You’ll feel a smile stretching across your face as you realize *I too am a member of this captive audience*. It’s Tog from their pink album. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
I just want to point out that the video I posted this week is just about the closest I can get to posting a bukkake porno without being a handed a well-deserved lifetime ban from Tumblr. If you want another of their awesome videos, click here and continue your videographic journey. And check out Colourmusic folks! They’re WAY underground, especially these days, and still phenomenal! Black Doom (Written by Phantom Slaughter of WORM)
[Article taken from Arcane Archivist Zine #5]
For as long as I can remember, I have always favored a slower to mid-tempo black metal. Perhaps I should say I have a strong attraction to glacial paced music in general. To me, it leaves much more room for depth with an almost larger than life atmosphere and dread. My first experience with this macabre sound would have to be with Hellhammer/Celtic Frost. My favorite First Wave BM entity. While Bathory and Venom are mainly chaotic, most of Tom G. Warrior's riffs seem to be directly influenced by early Sabbath. (Honorable mention would be Poison from Germany). I mean just listen to the opening riff of "Dawn of Megiddo"! If that ain't doom, I don't know what is. Or the lead heavy bends on "Procreated (of the Wicked)". This is why I must cite them as the starting point and birth of black doom.
As I furthered my research, I soon stopped at two albums which are a huge influence on Worm's first full-length, "Evocation of the Black Marsh". Goatlord's "Reflections of the Solstice" and Samael's "Worship Him". This had that same doom foundation but added way harsher vocals than what I had heard previously. I still get shivers down my spine when I hear "Into the Pentagram". Speaking of influences for Worm, it would be a crime to not name this next band. They started out as one of Finland's first BM bands under the name Holy Hell but soon their Procession of Black Doom became fully realized as Unholy! "The Second Ring of Power" would have to be my favorite album by these cloaked shamans. While we are in Finland, I would also like to mention some equally important releases. Barathrum's "Witchmaster/Hailstorm" as well as Dolorian's "When All the Laughter Has Gone".
We must now move onto Norway for a black doom band I feel is extremely underrated. Svartsyn with their only release "Aandens Melankoli". Anyone who is into funeral doom like Skepticism/Shape of Despair/Thergothon/Worship should feel right at home with this album. Another Norwegian connection would be Carpathian Forest's demo "Bloodlust and Perversion". The track "Return of the Freezing Winds" has those same Celtic Frost bends I dig so much. Let's not forget my favorite Darkthrone song "The Hordes of Nebulah".
Surprisingly enough, one of the richest scenes for this sub-genre would be Poland. Some speculate this due to the classic Samael tour which influenced many local bands. One of the earliest bands in this scene would be Xantotol, but I believe the true Polish standouts to be a tie between two records. Themgoroth's "Gate to the Unknown", and Taranis's "Faust". Both extremely gloomy and melancholic masterpieces.
I'd like to end this chapter of blackened sludge with some albums that are currently spinning in the Fantomlodge and quite possibly ones that are influencing the latest Worm material. This may be a controversial statement but I believe Katatonia's "Dance of December Souls" to be 100% black doom. If you think Katatonia has nothing to do with black metal, ya should go check the promo photos of "Jhva Elohim Meth". I'd like to piss off some more stuck up purists by adding Bethlehem's "Dictius te Necare", Argentum's "Ad Infinitum Funebrarum", and Salem's "Creating Our Sins/Kaddish". In a time where it seems like the modern underground scene is beginning to put a spotlight on death doom, it's very important to also show some love to its even more obscure evil twin brother BLACK DOOOM!

This might be a weird question, but I ended up browsing your blog, and you have a lot of interesting looking music posts. Do you have a list of underrated songs you think people should check out? Or something like that? I’ve been trying to find more indie bands recently (since I heard Spotify might try to demonetize songs with under a thousand listens and I thought maybe bringing the listen count up would help, foolish as that might be—and I haven’t even confirmed it’s true lmao). I’ve found a couple solo artists like presence3x with only a dozen listeners, but Spotify makes it super difficult to find them. I found City of Sound thanks to their YouTube presence, but not every indie band has that. (They’re not nearly as small as presence3x, to be clear)
Feel free to delete this ask if you don’t feel like answering—I won’t take offense! I just thought maybe it would give you an excuse to talk about music or something, since you seem to like it as much as I do.
not weird at all! my page is very quiet so nice to get the chance to babble about music :°) i guess i'm getting better at coming off as knowledgeable lol.
i try to find new music from a variety of sources - obviously looking at my blog you can see i'm a big fan of the @haveyouheardthisband project and it's been a fantastic way to discover new artists of all levels of popularity. some of those bands are super obscure and they've even compiled some of the most unheard-of into a list with recommended tracks and where to listen.
for my album-of-the-day resolution, i've taken suggestions from friends + strangers (and always open to more!), but mostly literally just use a random generator lol. for my personal rules i try to exclude compilations/live albums/various artists but really try to listen to everything else it gives me even if it's not normally my genre. it does seem to tend to generate more popular artists (surely nothing as obscure as presence3x!); the lowest monthly listenership so far is Vaqo (466) (also his stuff is quite good! would recommend). so it might not reliably return indie artists but is worth a try for fun.
another off-the-wall suggestion is Radiooooo, which is such a fun concept - radio based off a decade + country. i believe it's manually sourced by music lovers and their personal collection, which is really cool and can lead to some pretty obscure older finds!
but otherwise....i'm flattered you think i have an indie taste haha. i don't think any of my favorite songs/acts are obscure by any means, but i've never considered trying to create a playlist of my top underrated songs. but i'm inspired to do so now! i'll link it if i do make something like that. thanks for the ask and letting me ramble to a fellow Music Enjoyer :°)

Papi, I didn't know about PVRIS and Lynn before you started talking about them yesterday and now I'm obsessed. Maybe I'm behind on queer artists. Can you give us a few more to check out?
SAY LESSSSSSSSSS you know i live for this shit and queer music during pride month? lets goooo. ill give you five wlw artists that i think are criminally underrated. id be hard pressed to pick a fave out of all of these because i genuinely think they all make EXCELLENT music but...
...probably THE ACES have it by a HAIR. i just love them. queer women, LATINA LEAD SINGER! (and her sister is in the band too), alt-indie/pop-rock dreamy vibes. andddd you're in luck because they just released a new album literally in the last week. between them and pvris we're gonna have a gay soundtrack this summer. i think if you made me pick like the 500 fave songs of my life the aces would have a few in there all over the rankings but "daydream" would be VERY high up. there's something about it that feels like a serotonin shot to the chest. i never not blast this song while driving:
youtube
youtube
ELIJAH WOODS x JAMIE FINE...Jamie is the queer woman/vocalist. they were a canadian duo but they broke up a few years ago and Jamie is releasing some music independently which is still amazing because her voice is sublime but the work they did together is on CONSTANT rotation for me. some astounding alt-pop goodness.
youtube
youtube
i mentioned LAUREN SANDERSON and her "songs ill eat you out to" ep last night when talking about pvris but she deserves her standalone shoutout. she's close with one of my best friends in the world so we've gotten to hang out a few times and not only is she making some incredible and unapologetic queer music but she's also a super dope human. can't say enough good things about her. she's fully independent so support her music if you can. it's truly good. unbiased opinion. "frustrated" has been on my top 100 songs on every "wrapped" since it was released. i love this song. "queen bee" is just like PEAKKKKKK makeout song. trust me. find a girl. have that as your soundtrack while you're kissing. 10/10 recommend.
youtube
youtube
CASSIDY KING is probably the most underrated here. her yt videos get like 1-3k views and it makes me sad because i loveeeeee her stuff. the tone of her voice tickles my ears.
youtube
youtube
this is not one of my top two recs but i GOTTA shout it out because not only is it her most famous song (100k yt views lol) but...listen...if you've ever dated the straight girl who dates you in secret while publicly flirting with dudes or the closeted girl who refuses to break up with her boyfriend DO WE HAVE A SONG FOR YOU lol
on the opposite end of cassidy is CHELSEA CUTLER. she's probably the most well known here but i still dont think EVERY gay knows about her so im including her because jamming or having horny songs is incredible but we also need songs to be miserable too and she's A MASTER at that lol this live performance of "sometimes" has made me cry more than once if the mood is even slightly off haha

Nobody asked but over the last couple of days I decided to listen through every mainline Skinny Puppy album (all formal LPs + Remission which is for some reason considered an EP, never fully understood that) from beginning to end in order of release. I've listened to all these albums 5 billion times and know them more or less by heart but it occurred to me after the last show that I don't know if I've ever done this.
After each album I wrote a little Twitter-sized review of it and highlighted a few standout songs. This is, of course, because I originally did this on Twitter. It was a really fun little post-concert activity so I figured I would share it here too.
Maybe even a good introduction if I still have any followers putting off checking them out...? 👀
Remission (1984). The one that started it all. Kind of. Simpler than the rest maybe but still so iconic. “Far Too Frail” continues to be my favorite, hearing it live for one of the encores blew my mind. “Film” as the encore opener also brought tears to my eyes.
Tumblr media
Bites (1985). Still simpler than later outputs but also still a classic. Has a ton of really underrated instrumental-heavy/atmospheric tracks, and “The Choke” and “Last Call” are perfect songs. “Assimilate” is legendary but unfortunately gets hardcore overplayed lol.
Tumblr media
Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse (1986). The addition of DRG is palpable. SP starts coming into their own and sounding less like a Cabaret Voltaire tribute band. Lol. Moodier, more complex, and lush with dark soundscapes. “God’s Gift (Maggot)” is one of the best.
Tumblr media
Cleanse Fold and Manipulate (1987). From the first beat of “First Aid” onwards, this is one of THEE quintessential Skinny Puppy albums. IMO the real start of their “golden era.” Contains some of my favorite songs of ALL time. “Addiction” is easily a no contest top 5 SP track.
Tumblr media
VIVI SECT VI (1988). One of the greatest. Noxious war zones, sterile hospitals, choking, burning, cold clanging cages in animal laboratories. One of the darkest, most nightmarishly psychedelic, heaviest, absolutely masterfully crafted albums. “VX Gas Attack” remains unparalleled.
Tumblr media
Rabies (1989). Hi Al. This album just oozes sex appeal. I never get tired of it. It has a deranged masculine militaristic machine gun energy unlike anything else. I’ll never tire of “Hexonxonx,” “Worlock,” or “Tin Omen.” And ending on the dreamy delirious “Spahn Dirge”… Goddamn.
Tumblr media
Too Dark Park (1990). A lot of people call this one THE supreme SP album. It’s legendary. Pure unadulterated Skinny Puppy. Sounds like home. An endless barrage of chaos and stormy monstrous polluted amorphous landscapes. “Grave Wisdom” is an all time favorite ever.
Tumblr media
Last Rights (1992). The most utterly mindblowing devastating masterpiece of an album maybe ever made. The cohesiveness of the themes, sounds, lyrics, imagery—pure art. It’s a terrifying and desolate hellscape. Flung into sonic Knowhere. “Mirror Saw” is pure perfect transcendence.
Tumblr media
The Process (1996). I have some trouble with this album—It can just make me very sad. You can both feel and hear the devastating loss. Barren and hopeless. Still, it’s TEEMING with absolutely rocking, heavy, guttural bangers. “Cult,” “Blue Serge,” and “Curcible” stand out.
Tumblr media
The Greater Wrong of the Right (2004). A personal fave. Forever enthralled by the dreary smoking futuristic cityscapes painted by the various textures across each track. An epic journey through destruction of civilization and the mind. “Goneja” is an easy top 5 SP song for me.
Tumblr media
Mythmaker (2007). Used to struggle with it, was even my least favorite, but it’s grown on me and I love it. A high octane reality-bending journey through alien dimensions and human mythos. If Ogre’s alien Other belonged to an album it’d be this one. I adore “Dal” and “Pedafly.”
Tumblr media
HanDover (2011). Grossly underrated and constantly written off, I ADORE this album. It captures a sort of dreamlike melancholic sharp surrealism unmatched by anything else, like rain falling softly atop a rusting metallic dystopia. “Gambatte” is a stand-out forever favorite.
Tumblr media
Weapon (2013). A fitting end. Nostalgic familiarity rejuvenated with sharp crispness. This one taps deep into my imagination; post-apocalyptic fantastical mechanical wastelands haunted by ghosts of the past. “Plasicage” is an all-time fave, and I love the reimagined “Solvent.”

Unpopular K-pop opinion [IU's version]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As an OG Uaena, I feel like we don't talk enough about IU's older/early music videos or her live clips throughout her career - that made her the Queen of K-pop she is right now. Here are some of IU's music video/live clips that are underrated and worth checking out.
Lost Child (Mia) First off, her debut song. To release a ballad song as a debut song definitely says a lot about her talent. Not to mention she was only 15 years old back then. We all know how hard it is to make it as a soloist, especially to this day. Not unless you're from the Big 3 entertainment.
(A Story) Only I Didn't Know 나만 몰랐던 이야기... is a classic IU ballad song. I don't know why but my 11-year-old self can relate to this. The way IU can effortlessly make you feel the pain through her singing is way beyond. And also to have Park Bo Young in the mv??? Ugh. Truly a chef's kiss to have them in one project.
Boo Cuteness overload. If you ever wondered when IU started having many personas such as Lee Jidong and Lee Jigeum? Yeah. This is where it all began. Kidding aside, Boo shows IU's cutie and bubbly side here in contrast to the above-mentioned music videos.
Hey [Rock Version] Live From the same album (as Boo) Growing Up... this live performance of the Hey Rock version showcases IU's star power even during her Rookie days. Giving you no doubt she can sing LIVE.
Last Fantasy This may not be everyone's favorite, but this song will always have a special place in my heart. Some of you might not know but the way she released this song - unannounced as a gift, will show how IU is very grateful and loving toward Uaenas.
Every End of the Day/Peach Okay, I know this one's a bit lengthy. But, hear me out. There's a lot to unpack here. I don't know about y'all, but I really loved this mv because of how they approach shooting it. It's just like a documentary, you know like her IUtvs. They also included how IU came up with her writing process for Peach. And cannot stress enough how IU is so gf coded in the mv of EEOTD. Also, watch IU's live performance of Peach on Remocon. I just love the fact that her songs are even better when accompanied by a band.
Beautiful Dancer I swear, there's something about IU singing in Japanese. And she spoke in Japanese in her intro as if she was coming straight out of some sort of anime. After all these years, even if I don't listen to this song that often. Every time I hear it, I know every lyric. It's like it's engraved within me. I was also reminded of Kim Pilsook during her dance part in this mv. Such a cutie bub.
Believe in Love (with Yoo Seung-ho) I'm a sucker for IU duets. This is one of them. I love everything about this mv, IU's vocals never miss. And according to Soompi: "The lyrics of the song are written in reference to Yoo Seung Ho’s diary which he wrote during his trip to Sri Lanka where he witnessed the lives of orphans of wars." Which makes it even more meaningful.
This will be part 1 of my IU recommendations. I hope you'll love them as much as I do. And get the recognition IU deserves for her artistry not just her looks. I truly admire her mind and her humble beginnings as now she mastered her craft and managed to maintain on top of her career.

MR BIG!! thank you letting me send a ask in about them
they are a very underrated group in my opinion, the group consists of lead singer eric martin (probably the most adorable human), bassist billy sheehan ( played for david lee roth ), guitarist paul gilbert, and drummer pat torpey. all of which are very talented musicians i personally recommend the song Colorado bulldog since i believe it shows just how talented they are.
Thank you! I'll check it out! I love learning about new bands so always feel free so send me an ask about it!
