i was talking with my (cishet male) roommate about feminism and other such related topics on the way home from the movie last night and i was specifically talking about the danger of ultra-individualized approaches to 'empowerment', i.e. that even tho women can derive personal pleasure from putting on makeup or dressing up those decisions aren't being made in a vacuum and it's still in line with what the patriarchy demands. and women who can't even leave the house without a full face of makeup are not 'empowered' or free. i was saying that i've made a real conscious effort over the past five years to force myself to wear less makeup and basically do exposure therapy on myself with my own bare face and i think i have made progress even though i still don't really like how i look. and my roommate was listening quietly up until then when he said in an extremely sincere voice "you are very pretty though. like i know that's not the point but you ARE pretty, you must know that." and i was so taken aback cos he has never once complimented me on my appearance even tho i call him handsome and say he looks good all the time and he never comments on anyone's appearance ever as like a blanket ethical rule for himself. so i got so flustered and embarrassed and tried to pull my hat over my face and then i was like DAMMIT i've just undone all that feminist work!!!!!!!! i've succumbed to the male gaze!!!!!!! i'm an agent of the patriarchy after all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
