Folks theorising how Vedrfolnir might be The Sinner from Caribert's quest.
"Which is why I'm pushing my personal analysis that he might be "The Visionary" Vedrfolnir.
Dain's conversation at the end of Caribert emphasised on the Sinner's "sense of sight", about how good he can "see" and that the passage of time is of no obstacle to him, these match the meaning of Visionary, as briefed by Mona.
Dain seems to know him enough that he immediately had an idea of who that was. According to Skirk, Vedrfolnir should be as well-known as Rhine and Surtalogi, and they all have Nordic names like many other Khaenriahns (with Rhine being a confirmed Khaenriahn). This means that Vedrfolnir is likely a Khaenriahn, too, which would explain how quickly Dain recognised his moniker. Him calling himself a Sinner may also be related to Rhine being called Great Sinner and how Surtalogi's "The Foul" title is "Knight of Extreme Evil" in CN, all of which carry some negative tones.
If Dain keeps his promise, we will learn about the Sinner's identity in the coming Dain's quest. So Vedrfolnir being briefly teased, yet still being intentionally kept a mystery a couple versions prior to the reveal would be an interesting foreshadowing"
Even if he's not I think that people mentioned by Skirk are the Khaenri'ahn sages Pierro badmouthes at every opportunity. I don't know why so many people tend to assume they are from Hexenzirkel.
(well, Gold *is* part of Hexenzirkel but that's about it)

So far, there's been a VERY common theme (for the most part,) with the three people mentioned by skirk being associated with cataclysms of some capacity in teyvat
Surtalogi is likely associated with the fulfillment of the Tsarista's 'plan' or 'goal' , as is accounted by the Shivada Jade chunk description "Since you could endure my bitter cold, you must have the desire to burn?" "Then, burn away the old world for me." since his name origin is quite literally a great fire from norse mythology, that the giant Surtr intends to destroy and burn the world away with. Which, by all means, WOULD be considered a cataclysmic event, or cataclysm part 2, in teyvat; as it's likely intended to bring down Celestia as well as the current world order. Rhine is effectively counted as the number one reason for the cataclysm 500 years ago ; which was obviously kinda big, considering it's currently been the root cause to practically every issue we've experienced in teyvat in one way or another-
but the issue is that we have little to NO clue what vedrfolnir could be in association with (concretely, at least.) so far, the only other NOTED cataclysmic event which we've found recorded was probably when the 'second who came' arrived, which opens up a whole other can of worms; because even then, we can only assume then that they'd have to be some entity that has survived upwards of 6000 years- and currently. I really can think of any known entities to fit that criteria.

yknow. it is rather interesting that diluc is noted to be farsighted (& ‘stares right through you, taking all of your secrets and none of his own’ or whatever that quote is) and nicole is… a visionary. veðrfölnir is the hawk that sits between the eyes of an unnamed eagle at the top of yggdrasil, btw

warning for 4.2 spoilers (just a silly theory but just in case)
so skirk said how her master mentioned to her this person named vedrfolnir or “the visionary” and they’re supposed to be like an astrologer x10
vedrfolnir MIGHT be the one who told egeria (previous hydro archon) the prophecy of fontaine drowning because, as mona states, the magnitude of the prophecy is too big for an ordinary astrologist, so the ones who provoded the prophecy can be called VISIONARYS
now, who else foretold something massive 500 years ago? it was pierro, with the destruction of khaenri’ah
am i saying pierro might be vedrfolnir? yes i am
am i completely sure? no i’m not
the prophecy of fontaine was given to egeria 500 years ago, khaenri’ah fell 500 years ago. while it is a fun theory to me, pierro fucking his head over cause of the king not believing him doesnt give him that much time to go all fhe way to fontaine to talk to a GOD as an atheist about her nation possibly drowning in the future
still fun to think about it tho

hi sleepless.!!!!! I was wondering if you had any theories on surtalogi & vedrfolnir’e identities? since going off etymology , we can only assume they’re from or connected khaneri’ah in some way,, 💜
OK OK heres a not so intellectual brainstorming (key word: BRAINSTORMING. THIS IS PURELY BRAINSTORMING so if you see me say something then contradict it in the same sentence dont be surprised). So about surtalogi
The actual norse mythology surtalogi is a flaming sword surtr used in the ragnarok which he will use to fight the gods and the flame from said sword will eventually burn down the whole world. Which has lead a lot of people to believe he might be dainsleif (yknow since they're both swords) but I personally dont think that that is the case for a few reasons:
1- skirk refers to surtalogi in the same light as rhinedottir, so we can assume he does something like her.
2- in some sources surtalogi is the fire itself not the sword so its kinda hit or miss
3- surtalogi is waist deep in abyssal power which we know dain is not the most fond of.
4: dainsleif and surtalogi are two seperate swords?? so this for me is kinda like saying durin and dvalin are the same because they're both dwarves in norse mythology.
Again I havent deep dived into this theory so let me know if im missing some additional information but I feel like trying to attach him to a pure blood khaenriahn we already know seems kinda easy (yes the "we need more khaenriah characters agenda")
Where I think we should really be looking to try to figure out surtalogi's identity isn't surtalogi itself but surtr. NOW, NOW LET ME COOK.
Surtr was a fire giant who ruled muspelheim (the fire realm in norse mythology) and lead the fire giants in a battle against the gods during ragnorok, eventually ending the world with his fire. Now surtr is also one of the primordial giants.
what do we associate dragons with? Fire. Battle with the gods? Dragon sovereigns. Primordial giants? Again, dragon sovereigns. It seems so perfect except this would be contradicting my own theory of irmin and nibelung being the same since irmin=odin and surtr is way older than odin. Also another thing: hoyo usually likes to name dragons after dwarves in norse mythology. In fact nibelung himself is a dwarf. Would it be symbolism for them to also use a giant for his refrence or would it be disqualifying this possibility?
Also its worth keeping in mind that in mythology, at the end of ragnarok surtr successfully defeated all the gods and burned down the world, which obviously did not happen with the sovereigns.
HOWEVER. the whole theme of burning down the old world to let a new, better world be born from the ashes very much reminds me of fatui shit, and more importantly PYRO ABYSS LECTOR VOICELINES.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So if nothing else we can say for certain that surtalogi is very much khaenri'ahn ideology. Its just very intresting how the character is specifically THE FIRE THAT BURNS THE WORLD not the WEILDER OF IT. maybe he had a hand in the catacalysm? IDK I NEED TO ORGANIZE MY THOUGHTS
Key points to keep in mind: 1) pay attention to surtr not surtalogi 2) surtalogi is the weapon not the culprit
NOW vedrfolnir. We literally only have a name. No i dont mean in genshin in mythology itself as well. There is barely anything. All we know is that vedrfolnir is a hawk who sits between the eyes of an eagle perched on top of yggdrasil (who is also unnamed btw)
One particular thing though is that the translations of the name often have something to do with wind. Immidietly I wanna associate this with istaroth which would kinda make sense since vedrfolnir is on top of yggdrasil (irminsul) and istaroth is the god of time irminsul records all events in time past present AND future since the fruits are irminsul contain people's fates etc etc
But then would hoyo really namedrop a primordial shade in the same sentence with two abyss power abusing sinners? Seems somewhat unlikely even with the sinshades theories+ the timeline doesnt add up+ its like two diffrent lore topics entirely. It doesnt help that theres literally nothing about the eagle either so if I have some scrambles thoughts for surtalogi for vedrfolnir I literally have no idea. But I do think two keypoints (only points i mean) to keep in mind are 1) irminsul association 2) wind themed name

"Alright, explain this dragon grandsire thing." Jullus demanded. Reinhardt didn't immediately respond, holding up a hand to gesture that he needed a moment. Swallowing the mouthful of warm cider, he exhaled.
"What do you want to know?"
"Vedrfolnir called you his grandson, and you said an ancestor of yours drank dragon-blood. Don't people normally turn after ingesting the stuff?"
"Not back then, as far as we know." Reinhardt replied. "The general educated--" Here he made quotation marks with his fingers. "Guess is that before Nidhogg's curse, you'd need to drink a lot of dragon-blood to trigger a transformation. But if you've had say...only a cup or two, you're walking away with enhanced senses and stronger aether. And depending on the potency of the dragon's blood, the lot searing itself into your bloodline to pass down to your descendants." Jullus' eyes widened.
"But from what I was told--wasn't the curse triggered well over a thousand years ago?!" He exclaimed. "And if your ancestor had blood before that--did everyone in the family-?!" Reinhardt waggled a hand as he lifted the cup to his lips again.
"Yes and no." He continued, swallowing again. "It's just like say...okay. Your blue hair." Jullus blinked as a white-clawed hand gestured at his head.
"How often does that pop up in your family?"
"...It came from my great-great grandsire on my mother's side." Jullus responded. "It's a bit odd. Mother said the color tended to either skip several generations or just show up for about three or four before it disappeared again."
"The same in my case. The original enhancement would show up and vanish. Now it's gotten a power boost thanks to Nidhogg's curse. At some point the two merged inside me. Add in the vial of dragon's blood I ingested when I became a knight, and..." Reinhardt gestured with the now-empty cup to himself.
"That sounds like a mess."
"Mess would be putting it mildly." Reinhardt exhaled. Riven and Sebastian had a better grip of it than he did. They called it 'genetics' and apparently the Allagans had not only specialized in it, they'd used it to create unspeakable horrors. They'd both tried explaining it to him, but Reinhardt just couldn't wrap his head around the specifics. Though to be honest, the sciences hadn't been his strongest subject when he'd been sharing tutors with the Fortemps children.
"So..." Jullus was thinking. "You said it was based on the potency of the dragon. Is that why the curse was so strong? It came from a direct member of the First Brood?"
"Two. And yes. Midgardsormr's seven children are the First Brood. They are the ones technically closest to him in power. If they'd been left alone to their own devices, they would have been masters of the star and damn near deadly to fight. Not that they're already not."
<Tiamat.> Paien commented. <Forget Hraesvelgr. He is too soft from his isolation and he's not moving unless his father snaps at his heels. Vrtra is only just learning how to hold his own in a proper fight. Azdaja is too small.>
Dare you to say that to her face. Reinhardt thought. He blinked as Jullus suddenly waved a hand in front of him.
"Reinhardt?"
"Sorry. Paien had a observation." Reinhardt looked around--ah, there was the cider jar. Going over to it, he helped himself to another cupful. "Got any more questions?"
"A lot, actually. But my head hurts just trying to figure you out." Reinhardt set down his cup and poured a fresh one for Jullus, the Garlean nodding a thank-you as it was proffered to him.

He looked at his hands, where they rested on her shoulders, and the contrast of pale skin on black scales reminded him of the dragons they’d reunited earlier. Faunehm and her centuries of loneliness and anger, and Vedrfolnir who had dispelled it by his simple presence. Alone, she had succumbed, but with his help, she was made whole.

I am very much enjoying all the Reaper Job bonus flavor dialogue in these patches.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though, I would also use this post to explain how exactly Y'dehlya came to join the Reapers’ ranks and what powers she now wields. I’ll start with her Dragoon powers, because those lead into and fuse with her Reaper ones.
(Upon pressing “Keep reading”, many paragraphs will appear in sequence. It is recommended that you set aside sufficient time to view this post in its entirety.)
My take on Y’dehlya actually being able to use the Dragoon Soul Stone despite having not a single drop of Ishgardian blood in her veins stems from expanding on the “inner dragon” all Dragoons apparently have. It is my understanding that the Soul Stone only resonates with those who have a dragon’s spirit within them. For Ishgardians, this is easily explained with the reveal of Thordan I and his Twelve Knights murdering Ratatoskr and consuming her flesh a thousand years before ARR, enough time for draconic power to take root and lay dormant inside every Ishgardian living in the game’s present.
But Y’dehlya’s is from a different circumstance. The simpler reason I thought of was that Persephone’s combat transformation was very draconic in appearance, and Y’dehlya’s soul enduring seven whole Rejoinings and bringing that back to her. The more complex one is that Hydaelyn bound Persephone’s Shard on the Source to the soul of a stillborn child of Midgardsormr at his behest. Or I could just do both. Either way, with these plus the meddlings of (in order) Nidhogg via the Eye, resonating with a Dragoon Soul Stone, Midgardsormr removing Hydaelyn’s blessing and binding himself to Y’dehlya, and Hraesvelgr bestowing his own Eye unto her awakens/creates a manifestation of Y’dehlya’s latent draconic powers: Mehen.
Mehen in ancient Egyptian mythology is the equivalent of Jormungandr and Ouroboros. A deity that protected Osiris-Ra as he traveled through the night/underworld by coiling around him.
With all the other dragon influences around her soul, it was almost impossible for her at first to truly sense Mehen’s presence throughout ARR and HW. It was easily mistaken for one of the others’. As for StB, she had not only hung up the mantle of Azure Dragoon alongside Estinien at the end of the Dragonsong War, but went the extra mile and left the Soul Stone in Aymeric’s care, the war burned her out that much. And yet, there were still some events that made her fall back on those abilities, which also helped her to reconcile herself with them. The DRG Job Quests from 60 to 69, as well as taking the spear up again for the Nhaadam help Y’dehlya find the courage to reclaim the Stone when Aymeric offers it back to her in Ala Mhigo before the showdown against Zenos-Shinryu.
The Omega Raids was the first time Mehen truly showed themself to Y’dehlya, manifesting physically at Midgardsormr’s behest and introduced themself appropriately. In order to qualify as a candidate for Omega’s challenge, Mehen quickly adopted a more humanoid form, manifesting as a Raen Au Ri that resembles Y’dehlya (or moreso Persephone).
Due to having no set preference themself between being more “masculine” or “feminine”, Mehen manifests in whichever form they are feeling at the moment.
When Omega traps Y’dehlya and U’reksh and starts testing their pain tolerances up to the extent that they could very well die, Midgarsormr uses the last of his available power to free Y’dehlya and entrusts Mehen with her. It is then that Y’dehlya unlocks Life of the Dragon and together, they free U’reksh and cause Omega to retreat and recalibrate. After the whole Omega Raid storyline is completed, Y’dehlya introduces Mehen to the rest of the Scions, and later Estinien, Orn Kai, Vedrfolnir, and Faunehm during the lvl 70 DRG quest. Mehen resolves to want to learn more and more about the world while traveling within Y’dehlya.
Flash forward to ShB. Y’dehlya and Mehen were...more aware than they let on about the state of their soul with subsequent Lightwarden absorptions, especially after overhearing Y’shtola and Urianger’s argument over it. In the time between absorbing Amh Araeng’s Lightwarden and the siege on Eulmore, Y’dehlya grew desperate in trying to find her own way to save the both of them.
During a check-in with the Source, she happened upon the events of the first Reaper quests. The words “Lemures” and “Reaper” coming from the attendant and his employer tip her off to who they want her to deal with. She’s heard whispers of this group before through the grapevine, as well as solid confirmation from Y’kouha. And so, with Mehen’s consent and hearing the summoned voidsent itself beg for death via devouring upon hearing their plight (it’s a win-win exchange, the voidsent finally gets sweet release and their devourers get their powers), she readily accepts, because what is the antithesis of sin eater, but voidsent? And thus, this lovely explanation from Zero is what takes place between Mehen and the voidsent, becoming the Void Dragon/Voidwyrm and taking on the appearance of a Xaela:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If the voidsent powers stemmed from a being who was already friendly towards their host, theoretically, there shouldn't be any fear of being taken over. This doesn’t stop Y’shtola from immediately grilling Dehlya on her choices once she takes notice out of further concern and anger at Urianger and the Exarch for driving her to this. Y’dehlya stands her ground. The other Scions have very mixed reactions when the cat’s out of the bag, but eventually grow to accept it. Both Urianger and the Exarch in particular feel incredibly guilty and more or less continue to do so into EW, both admitting it to Y’dehlya and Mehen at different points despite their forgiveness and a look at the brighter side of the circumstance.
As for learning how to use a scythe, Y’dehlya’s practically a natural, but part of that will be explained further down.
Anyway, back to ShB. Unfortunately, the absorption of the voidsent wound up doing little in the long run after absorbing Innocence and Y’dehlya is locked out of using Mehen’s voidsent powers until the fusion with Ardbert.
The fusion with Ardbert also triggered a new power in her that seems to only activate against Ascians and Ancients in subsequent MSQ battles: Her weapon suddenly becomes a scythe made out of aether, her skill with it is like never before, and her outfit becomes that of a tattered black cloak. It’s like Enshroud, but it isn’t; her soul is channeling Persephone’s power and skill, manifesting thus, and disappears a short time after it is no longer needed.
After returning to Sharlayan at the end of Main Endwalkere, however, the tattered black outfit and white scythe become permanent. The scythe itself even looks like an actual forged weapon now (See the lvl 89 Reaper gear for reference). Y’dehlya takes this as a sign to becomes a Reaper in full and dyes the cape her signature fuchsia.
Y’dehlya’s Enshroud form bears an uncanny resemblance to Estinien’s final form when he was possessed by Nidhogg, but with a predominantly black, purple/fuchsia, and red color scheme.
