Folks theorising how Vedrfolnir might be The Sinner from Caribert's quest.
"Which is why I'm pushing my personal analysis that he might be "The Visionary" Vedrfolnir.
Dain's conversation at the end of Caribert emphasised on the Sinner's "sense of sight", about how good he can "see" and that the passage of time is of no obstacle to him, these match the meaning of Visionary, as briefed by Mona.
Dain seems to know him enough that he immediately had an idea of who that was. According to Skirk, Vedrfolnir should be as well-known as Rhine and Surtalogi, and they all have Nordic names like many other Khaenriahns (with Rhine being a confirmed Khaenriahn). This means that Vedrfolnir is likely a Khaenriahn, too, which would explain how quickly Dain recognised his moniker. Him calling himself a Sinner may also be related to Rhine being called Great Sinner and how Surtalogi's "The Foul" title is "Knight of Extreme Evil" in CN, all of which carry some negative tones.
If Dain keeps his promise, we will learn about the Sinner's identity in the coming Dain's quest. So Vedrfolnir being briefly teased, yet still being intentionally kept a mystery a couple versions prior to the reveal would be an interesting foreshadowing"
Even if he's not I think that people mentioned by Skirk are the Khaenri'ahn sages Pierro badmouthes at every opportunity. I don't know why so many people tend to assume they are from Hexenzirkel.
(well, Gold *is* part of Hexenzirkel but that's about it)

So far, there's been a VERY common theme (for the most part,) with the three people mentioned by skirk being associated with cataclysms of some capacity in teyvat
Surtalogi is likely associated with the fulfillment of the Tsarista's 'plan' or 'goal' , as is accounted by the Shivada Jade chunk description "Since you could endure my bitter cold, you must have the desire to burn?" "Then, burn away the old world for me." since his name origin is quite literally a great fire from norse mythology, that the giant Surtr intends to destroy and burn the world away with. Which, by all means, WOULD be considered a cataclysmic event, or cataclysm part 2, in teyvat; as it's likely intended to bring down Celestia as well as the current world order. Rhine is effectively counted as the number one reason for the cataclysm 500 years ago ; which was obviously kinda big, considering it's currently been the root cause to practically every issue we've experienced in teyvat in one way or another-
but the issue is that we have little to NO clue what vedrfolnir could be in association with (concretely, at least.) so far, the only other NOTED cataclysmic event which we've found recorded was probably when the 'second who came' arrived, which opens up a whole other can of worms; because even then, we can only assume then that they'd have to be some entity that has survived upwards of 6000 years- and currently. I really can think of any known entities to fit that criteria.

Khaenri’ah with three divided factions
1. Those who support and even worship the traveler
2. Those who remain strictly to Khaenri’ah principles—no gods, no worship, anti-travelers
3. Those who side, came from or sympathize with the abyss citizens
———
Rhinedottir I headcanon her as part of the group two obviously
Surtalogi and Skirk could be the third
And Dainsleif is kind of the first group

ok I just had a really weird thought cross my mind: “why the hell didn’t Skirk just portal Childe out of the abyss?” I mean we know she can do it, so I came to the conclusion that this order of events must have happened (or something close to it)
Childe fell into the abyss
Childe had the dream about the narwhal and acquired the “traces of it”
Skirk by some manner finds Childe, realizes he has “it” on him, and is like “well shit, I would portal him out of this damn place, but that’s a disaster waiting to happen”, so she proceeds to train him and teach him FL (but not about the “it” apparently, hmmm)
he leaves the abyss by some means, either she decides he’s ready and portals him out (to his knowledge or not, I’m leaning on the not) or he finds some other way (on accident or on purpose) to get out
However, considering that she could let him leave at any time, I think she intended on keeping Childe down there for a while so he could never trigger Fontaines prophecy, or at least delay it in some manner. We know she knows of rheindotter so it’s not a stretch to say she could actually know the lady personally and some of her associates in the Hexincircle, like Nicole. So, she would know keep Childe in the abyss for whatever period of time is most likely to allow the prophecy to be thwarted (and give him the necessary skills he needs), then let him out, maybe with a wink wink nudge nudge from to the Tsaritsa to make him a harbinger (this would play in her favor too, after all).
I hope that made some coherent amount of sense, either way what I’m trying to say is that Childe’s span of time he spent in the abyss was deliberate, not random. Because once he met Skirk, he theoretically could have left at any time (I don’t think she’s evil enough to keep him down there when she could let him out easily, there has to be a reason)
the only caveat to this is if the portal Skirk enters through was actually made by surtalogi, and she was like borrowing his magic or something to turn the whale into a black hole ball, but I think that’s really unlikely
either way, we will hopefully find out soon!

i have to say of all the things people were speculating before 4.2 the fontaine AQ "theory" (if you could even call it that) im the most glad just. aged like complete milk and died silently in a ditch as it should was the way people were just. genuinely thinking the shadow dude in the narwhals stomach was childe 💀 and not even in the "ohhh what if" but actually soo convinced i just????
like hello what the fuck. i cannot believe that was a real thing like it was so widespread bc everyone went all. well the narwhal has to be bad and evil with terrible designs in mind for some nefarious plot relating to ajax so it has to be corrupting him and using his body as a puppet. and then pointing at the absolute most superficial "similarities" between the shadow and foul legacy when literally none of the actual core design aspects of FL were present at all whatsoever 😭 the shadow shares more in common with the fucking husks or even like. those hsr antimatter legion bitches what are you guys talking about. arguing oh the reason it looks nothing like childe or FL is bc hes already been gigasigma corrupted for a billion years in abyss time like WHAT
it got so bad i started fucking. double guessing my own (factually correct. as always. its like dawei wants to feed my ego) assessment of. yeah no fucking way thats ajax. theres some similarities in certain combat moves and some armor traits but like. he didnt invent his fighting style with FL he was literally taught it 💀 and 4.0 already told us skirk taking him in as a disciple had Something to do with his encounter with the narwhal. not at all unusual there would be some parallel (and i do find it plausible that the shadow v much has to do with surtalogi).
the other side of it was also like. yes sure im less reliable on that argument front leading up to 4.2 bc im way too narwhalpilled and obsessed with destined bonds between a mortal and an eldritch cosmic being in general so i was always hoping for it to like him in that based gourmet incomprehensible alien way. BUT. the way ppl fucking trashed my beloved acting all oh the narwhal calling for ajax must involve wanting to do something terrible to the uhhhhhh (checks notes) kid that.... freed it? woke it up? after an indeterminate time spent in some sort of stasis and imprisonment??? especially when its a creature meant to be freely traversing the cosmos?? Huh? 😭 tf would the narwhal have against him im crying. stop assuming the worst of this lovely friend shaped cetacean that is literally so rude.
(And like. i mean this with the utmost respect to his clear power boost regarding mastery over FL and am by no means trying to flatten or dismiss his development but also. 45+ days brawling. when the narwhal was already more or less fully primordial sea juice boosted. and when it went DIRECTLY for the kill against all those shrimp civilians in the cutscene. ajax. ajax. ajax. you did a great job but no way in fucking hell am i believing the narwhal was at any point trying to kill you fr im sorry 💀💀💀 you got the VIP treatment bc it likes you and i am Not believing otherwise unless dawei himself smites me and rebukes this directly. edit: and like he fell back in passed out & near death. well why the fuck wouldnt it finish the job right there and then???? checkmate atheists)
ultimately it just made no sense and while theories are fair game for everyone and all i just really hated this one its literally so petty but i cant help it im so glad it was instakilled on spot by the 4.2 trailer SKSKSKDKSKSDSJK i saw my man true and real in all his foul legacy drip and i knew i won.
also when the narwhal attack animations leaked and people were all oh my god its destroying childes constellation this is super bad and evil and i just. you mean the constellations that serve as the direct physical manifestations of celestias hold over destiny and fate. those. you mean the guy whose boss archive entry builds him up as the one who will "overturn this world" having his constellation busted through by a 874679 gigaton star-devouring whale pal could like. in no way shape or form be perhaps a visual metaphor for some. other development. after multiple lore drops and talks of wills capable of rivaling the world and not being chained by celestias ever present gaze. dont you maybe think the visuals of a constellation falling from the sky could also imply a different kind of thing. icant 😭 same for his vision malfunctioning if the narwhals behind that one too. like you mean the device we used to literally spy on his memories and that are all but confirmed to be not quite the quirky divine gift all perks no fine print you might assume. that thing. surely the vision malfunctioning is awful for ajax. (this take was sponsored by sustainer!!!)
it was literally just all these weird assumptions that abyss bad so narwhal from abyss (that aged well lmao) also bad ajax is a helpless baby fish being lured by the seductive calls of his narwhal to the dark side. and so on
and then turns out hes the one attacking the narwhal on sight 💀💀 if only we couldve foreseen his desire to fight the being he encountered during his time in the abyss once they meet again from something like idk his own voicelines that have been there since 1.1..... but alas 😔

all that final parts of archon story last night but the only thing that is stuck with absolute clarity and on repeat in my head is the way that skirk yeeted my rascal like a wet towel and then complained how he was having an endless fight with surtalogis pet like a silly kid while everyone was like "um miss, that pet almost wiped out an entire nation"

About Imunlaukr, the hero from the Blizzard Strayer artifact set again.
From the Sacrificial Greatsword description:
"In the eyes of the Imunlaukr clan, combat existed not for protection, for glory, or for gaining territory. Rather, it was for the amusement of the gods, high up in the heavens, for whom little else could serve to entertain."
It kiiind of fits the philosophy that Childe describes. And for some reason Imunlaukr's story is found in artifacts from the same domain as Parsifal's story (although one could argue that both are just relevant for Old Mondstadt and leave it at that. a clan founded by an outsider and someone who left their clan and became an outsider).
The description of Starsilver Claymore belonging to Imunlaukr suggests it was a philosophy born of despair, but then people lie about their motives, and legends embellish things, and the sword itself is found in the tomb with these murals:
Tumblr media
The murals have been analyzed to pieces by now. Something something forbidden knowledge.
It's all connected somehow but I can't understand.
I still think that The Boar Princess tells the story of Imunlaukr and how he came to Sal Vindagnyr. I think he brought something that resulted in Celestia nailing the place. The story then has been erased from Irminsul and all that we have now is a pathetic fairytale book with some vague hints.
Also. Childe's shoulder ornament resembles the one angelic dude wears, Childe's scarf ornament resembles the alchemical symbol for antimony (associated with wolves and the penultimate step to purifying gold. idk, western esotericism is weird), the description of the Boar Princess wolf's mental state change sounds uncannily similar to Childe.
Also the squirrel from the tale. "Of all the beings in the ancient world, none were more evil than Woobakwa — not even demons and dragons." ("extremely evil technique" repeatedly encountered in CN names of Childe's skills and constellations), and Surtalogi being called "Extremely evil knight" (极恶骑) in Chinese.
You know, I think there are enough parallels to assume at least the same samsara if not the same martial art with the same teacher. I think Surtalogi or someone who taught him had a hand in whatever happened to Sal Vindagnyr.
(and also whatever technique Childe wields, it has a potential to get a place nailed)
Sal Vindagnyr destruction also predates Khaenri'ah and the Cataclysm by five hundred years, so either this guy was not initially Khaenri'ahn (and, by association, maybe neither was Gold), or we have to brace ourselves for levels of powerscaling previously unknown to science.

hi sleepless.!!!!! I was wondering if you had any theories on surtalogi & vedrfolnir’e identities? since going off etymology , we can only assume they’re from or connected khaneri’ah in some way,, 💜
OK OK heres a not so intellectual brainstorming (key word: BRAINSTORMING. THIS IS PURELY BRAINSTORMING so if you see me say something then contradict it in the same sentence dont be surprised). So about surtalogi
The actual norse mythology surtalogi is a flaming sword surtr used in the ragnarok which he will use to fight the gods and the flame from said sword will eventually burn down the whole world. Which has lead a lot of people to believe he might be dainsleif (yknow since they're both swords) but I personally dont think that that is the case for a few reasons:
1- skirk refers to surtalogi in the same light as rhinedottir, so we can assume he does something like her.
2- in some sources surtalogi is the fire itself not the sword so its kinda hit or miss
3- surtalogi is waist deep in abyssal power which we know dain is not the most fond of.
4: dainsleif and surtalogi are two seperate swords?? so this for me is kinda like saying durin and dvalin are the same because they're both dwarves in norse mythology.
Again I havent deep dived into this theory so let me know if im missing some additional information but I feel like trying to attach him to a pure blood khaenriahn we already know seems kinda easy (yes the "we need more khaenriah characters agenda")
Where I think we should really be looking to try to figure out surtalogi's identity isn't surtalogi itself but surtr. NOW, NOW LET ME COOK.
Surtr was a fire giant who ruled muspelheim (the fire realm in norse mythology) and lead the fire giants in a battle against the gods during ragnorok, eventually ending the world with his fire. Now surtr is also one of the primordial giants.
what do we associate dragons with? Fire. Battle with the gods? Dragon sovereigns. Primordial giants? Again, dragon sovereigns. It seems so perfect except this would be contradicting my own theory of irmin and nibelung being the same since irmin=odin and surtr is way older than odin. Also another thing: hoyo usually likes to name dragons after dwarves in norse mythology. In fact nibelung himself is a dwarf. Would it be symbolism for them to also use a giant for his refrence or would it be disqualifying this possibility?
Also its worth keeping in mind that in mythology, at the end of ragnarok surtr successfully defeated all the gods and burned down the world, which obviously did not happen with the sovereigns.
HOWEVER. the whole theme of burning down the old world to let a new, better world be born from the ashes very much reminds me of fatui shit, and more importantly PYRO ABYSS LECTOR VOICELINES.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So if nothing else we can say for certain that surtalogi is very much khaenri'ahn ideology. Its just very intresting how the character is specifically THE FIRE THAT BURNS THE WORLD not the WEILDER OF IT. maybe he had a hand in the catacalysm? IDK I NEED TO ORGANIZE MY THOUGHTS
Key points to keep in mind: 1) pay attention to surtr not surtalogi 2) surtalogi is the weapon not the culprit
NOW vedrfolnir. We literally only have a name. No i dont mean in genshin in mythology itself as well. There is barely anything. All we know is that vedrfolnir is a hawk who sits between the eyes of an eagle perched on top of yggdrasil (who is also unnamed btw)
One particular thing though is that the translations of the name often have something to do with wind. Immidietly I wanna associate this with istaroth which would kinda make sense since vedrfolnir is on top of yggdrasil (irminsul) and istaroth is the god of time irminsul records all events in time past present AND future since the fruits are irminsul contain people's fates etc etc
But then would hoyo really namedrop a primordial shade in the same sentence with two abyss power abusing sinners? Seems somewhat unlikely even with the sinshades theories+ the timeline doesnt add up+ its like two diffrent lore topics entirely. It doesnt help that theres literally nothing about the eagle either so if I have some scrambles thoughts for surtalogi for vedrfolnir I literally have no idea. But I do think two keypoints (only points i mean) to keep in mind are 1) irminsul association 2) wind themed name

Hello !! It’s 🌌 anon !! So sorry for not being present, a lot of things happened irl :’) but I have been lurking when I could !!
Anyway, I hope you’ve been doing well and taking breaks !! Have you played the most recent Archon Quest for Fontaine? What did you think of it? :0 I personally really like it !! But won’t spoil anything if you haven’t played it yet- although if you have I wouldn’t mind hearing your thoughts about it :D
Have a great day/night/whatever time it is for you currently !!

Massive Fontaine Archon Quest spoilers under the cut!!
Hi 🌌 anon!! Don't apologize, i hope things are going better for you now! Make sure to take care of yourself as well 💗 And yes, I have played through the new Fontaine quests!! And what can i say... it was just... really amazing.
I'm biased toward Sumeru's AQs because it's my fav nation but, after the last Fontaine AQs, i can definitely say they're the best. It was just really wonderfully done, with Furina's trial (i felt absolutely terrible for her </3) Focalors' execution (i did not expect her to get a whole new model. Childe coming out of nowhere and beating the whale 😭 And omg. I felt so bad for my baby, especially at the end where Lyney said it "did a number on his health" like NOOOO MY POOR BB I'LL NURSE HIM BACK TO HEALTHHH 😭😭 Childe is always going through something i swear 😭
And Arlecchino. I mean what can i say i absolutely love her. I love seeing her calm, cooperative side, but, I would love to see her be more evil. More Harbinger-like. Scara did say she was a wolf in sheep's clothing so, I am really hoping we see more of that! And it was pretty cool to see Skirk, after so long of the only thing of her being Childe's voice line lol. And the Abyss lore with the Descenders and all that? Delicious. And also with the theory that the Tsaritsa's plan is to possibly revive the Third Descender since the Gnoses are their remains!!!
It just makes me think about how much crazy strong people we have yet to meet (the Hexenzirkel, top Harbingers, and now the Abyss people like Surtalogi). Likes there's so much... and we're already done with Fontaine AQs. When are we gonna meet these people 😭 But yeah. Overall i was very impressed and hope to see future quests be just as interesting and fun!

Also this is just a quick thing but I wanna throw my theory hat into the ring for who the hell Surtalogi (Skirk's master) might be.
Surtr is a Jotunn (giant) in Norse mythology who will be responsible for setting the world on fire during Ragnarok. Surtalogi is the fire itself - or, more notably, a flame-sword.
So far the only other giants that have been mentioned in Genshin are Pangu, Purusha and Ymir (courtesy of manga!Venti), and they're all related to creation myths, not destruction myths. However, we do have one other character who's named after a sword.
Tumblr media
So maybe Surtalogi was formerly associated with Khaenri'ah or the Royal Guard?

also like. why is it always childes character or lore getting shafted with the Critical mistranslations im. when will they learn 💀
the actual title for surtalogi aka "foul" is a completely different word from foul legacy in like. every single translation except eng. every single version got it better (its along the lines of "knight/rider of evil" across the board). and now ppl will be running off with the omg foul like foul legacy thing bc the translation literally lies to u what the fuck 😭😭
also like? its not like the actual title lacks connections with childe either bc im pretty sure ive seen it pointed out that the names of his c5 and c6 do explicitly parallel the cn title for surtalogi. so like for english why not put havoc somewhere in the title instead of this random ass "foul" business im so????
