Vashon Island, Washington. I accidentally exposed this roll to light. The result was kind of cool though.

What little remains of the tree bicycle on Vashon Island stand seven feet off the ground. Its twisted, rusted figure a mere skeleton of its former self. Having lost the front when and handlebars, you may not have even noticed it, were you not specifically looking for it. As we found a spot to park and crossed the road, I scanned the treeline for a glimpse of this hidden wonder. Despite the rain, the flooding, and the mud, I blazed ahead searching every tree and finding footpaths, and when I saw it, I felt. . . excitement. Excitement, yes, but also sadness. This legend before me was decaying. A visual reminder of the temporal nature of all things living and created. This tree is maybe a hundred years in the making, the bicycle no less old. Year after year, as this douglas fir grew, the bicycle rusted and fell to pieces.
One day, when this tree stands three-hundred feet tall, perhaps the scraps of this machine will be entirely enveloped, having left no trace of its existence. And what a bright thought that is; that nature, in the end, will prevail over our creations?
What was there left to do, now, than line up my friends, and take a picture?

Vashon Island
7 September 2022

I should make a checklist of which nearby islands I’ve visited by bike (and which I haven’t). Today it was 47 miles (76 kms) on Vashon, southwest of Seattle. Like most of the local landscape, the ‘plateau’ that defines much of the island is around 400’, but that means any detour to the beach (or up from the ferry) entails a big hill.

I parked just up the hill from the Fauntleroy Terminal and caught the 8:30 boat to Vashon. I stopped briefly at Point Heyer (KVI Beach), Point Robinson (on Maury Island), Dockton Park and Jensen Point (both on Quartermaster Harbor), before stopping at the grocery store and the coffee stand in Burton for lunch.

I continued to Tahlequah at the south end of the Island before turning around. From the Tahlequah ferry terminal I could look across at Point Defiance in Tacoma, where I was riding less than a week ago. My route north on the island was on Wax Orchard Road and the Westside Highway (not really a highway). The pavement and the shoulders aren’t as nice as on the main road up and down the island, but there were also no cars (or very, very few). There’s no avoiding a steep climb near the end of the ride and Cedarhurst is probably the standard approach. I opted for the Burma Road, which is closed to through traffic, but not bikes, due to an unfortunate geologic event. But the real challenge of that route is a couple of very steep pitches (15-20%?) that left me walking. Perhaps if they’d come earlier in the ride I might have ridden up, but not after 45 miles.
It’s then a fast downhill to the ferry terminal. I arrived at 2:00, long after the 1:40 boat sailed. And the next one wasn’t until 3:20. They really need a coffee shop and an ice cream fountain at the Vashon Terminal! But regardless of my bad timing, the day was great. The weather was perfect - sunny with occasional clouds. And maybe low 60s when I started and a little over 70 by the end.
