Ficus elastica Tineke
One of my favorite houseplants in my collection, from a big box store at that. I have truly fallen in love with the Ficus elastica, owning several cultivars of the rubber plant, but the Tineke is one of my favorites.
Stunning variegation, extremely easy to care for. This one sits in my plant room under various grow lights because they love sun. She’s in a chunky soil mix with worm castings and enjoy a drink of fertilizer at just about every watering, even in the winter. She’s currently getting watered every 2 weeks or so, waiting until she’s almost completely dry. Rubber plant leaves tend to curl under when they’re super thirsty and they don’t ever uncurl so making sure she’s not overwatered or under watered can be tricky!

Plant of the Day
Wednesday 7 December 2022
The female holly cultivar Ilex aquifolium 'Argentea Marginata' (silver-margined holly) produces a beautiful evergreen tree which has variegated leaves and bright red berries. This tree will grow in moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. These two specimens create a welcoming arch over this path in a winter garden.

Hello everyone I wanted to share a very interesting variegated rose that grew in my garden. Fully developed branches like this are super rare because white leaves usually wilt really early because they have no protection against the sun.
Also, the leaves appear white becauste they lack chlorophyll, the green pigment and thus cannot photosynthetize on their own. All the nutrients are provided by the rest of the plant.

Came across some variegated holly (Ilex aquifolium) which was cool, but I noticed that the suckers at its base were all albino, which means they can’t photosynthesize on their own and will probably have to be trimmed back to prevent them from draining the whole plant. There was another plant with the same condition as well and I’m wondering if they’re predisposed to this.
The cause of the variegation in this cultivar is probably mosaicism, which is when a single organism has cell populations with different cell lines. (Similar to chimaerism, but mosaicism has to have the cell lines of come from the same zygote with a mutation happening early alone to create the different cell lines, while a chimera has genetic content from two different zygotes.)
Mosaics and chimeras tend to have unstable variegation and can sometimes lose it (where new growth becomes all green or all white) because cells from only one line got into the new growth, as opposed to plants which have genetic instructions to switch the pigment on or off but have the unbroken genes for the pigment in all their cells.
(I’m not 100% sure on the above plant since for all I know it could get some green again when the growth is mature, leading to it likely being the latter. Also the variegation is pretty orderly and not “messy” which is also possible evidence it’s not a mosaic.)

Plant of the Day

This Ulmus parvifolia 'Frosty' (lacebark elm, Chinese elm) is a small tree with lots of character. It features green leaves with frosted edges and interestingly mottled bark. The tree produces a vase shaped habit and has proved resistant to dutch elm disease.
