Lucien and Vassa: a firebird retelling.

So often I see Vassien shippers argue (most recently in a @acourtofthought anon) that the last book of the series will be a retelling of The Firebird, a Russian folktale which inspired many versions of the story, including the most well-known Swan Lake, with Lucien and Vassa as the MCs.

And to justify this, they point to the fact that Vassa is literally a Firebird and that Lucien is a spellcleaver who can break her curse and save her from Koschei. Well, as always, I’m not too arrogant to admit that yes, this is always a possibility. No one knows what SJM has planned, but to those who are using The Firebird folktale as your evidence, you’re actually making a claim for Elucien that much stronger.

See, in most versions of this story, Prince Ivan (our Lucien) does not even end up with the Firebird. He falls in love with and marries one of the women/females/princesses who are also claimed by Koschei. Prince Ivan and the Firebird build a deep friendship and loyalty to each other through their shared struggles. That sounds very much like Lucien and Vassa, does it not?

Yes, there are so many versions of this tale, and SJM could really use it as inspiration rather than a retelling as such, but to argue that Lucien and Vassa are endgame because of the Firebird folklore is somewhat misguided, and is practically confirming the countless theories that Eluciens and many other ACOTAR fans have already predicted: Lucien AND Elain will play a role in the demise of Koschei TOGETHER.

VARIGO DAY

i did a sequel to the fairy au because i wanted worldbuilding

Hugo could still place exactly where that stupid blue streak flowed against the rest of his hair. He could still count the freckles that dusted the tip of his nose and the edges of his cheeks. He could just about remember how his lip would curl when he smiled. It was lopsided- the left side of his mouth always pushed up just a little bit more than the right.

He was a shadow, an echo of something he never deserved. He could still feel the rough calluses on his hands lightly scratch across his cheeks. His lips still tingled with the memory.

Or: The bridge connecting the human kingdom of Ingvarr and the fairy kingdom of Corona has been shattered. After being forced into hiding after the events of last year, everything familiar to Hugo was now gone.

And yet somehow, ghosts from his past still manage to sneak their way back into the fragments of a life he had cobbled together. Who knows how much longer he can hold on.

Exhaustion weighted my every breath, and I’d barely finished my plate of roast mutton before I crawled into bed and passed out atop the blankets. Rhys woke me only to tug off my boots and jacket.

I scanned the dark, listening. The skin on my arms pebbled. “Rhys.” He was instantly awake— sitting upright. “What is it?” - “Something …” I listened so hard my ears strained. “Something is here. Something is wrong.” He moved, hauling on his pants and knife-belt. I followed suit, still trying to listen, fingers stumbling over the buckles.

HE WAS INSTANTLY AWAKE that scene gave me most husband and wife vibes in the whole series I love it

Amren’s small figure darted around a tent, wearing what looked to be Varian’s shirt. It came down to her knees, and its owner was indeed behind her, bare-chested as Rhys was, and wide-eyed.

Poor Varian is always half naked in the middle of drama

“I can’t hear anything,” Rhys said. “You were not Made,” Amren snapped. But we were. The three of us … Again, the Cauldron sang its siren song.
