THE FLORIDA PROJECT (2017)
Grade: A-
Great plot, wonderful performances by everyone, but what pushes this film is the excellent frame composition and use of color. It’s an uncomfortable film throughout. I was split on the last 2 minutes of the film.

The Florida Project (2017) is about a young girl living with her mom in a cheap motel near Orlando, Florida. Moonee and her friends play in and around the hotel, exploring the area, sometimes terrorizing the other guests, and making their own magic. Moonee’s mom, Halley, struggles to make ends meet, and the magic begins to fade.
The Florida Project is a marvelous capture of the wild joys of childhood. The real troubles start to sneak in so slowly you barely notice, or don’t want it to be true. There’s a sharp contrast between Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and the Magic Castle motel where they live, the contrast between childhood and the realities of adulthood, wealth and scarcity. Halley lives in Moonee’s world, but her financial responsibility forces her out of it. The truth is, this film is about poverty in America, and what it’s like for children to be separated from their parents. The joys of this film makes its ending all the more tragic.
This film is also a perfect snapshot of a place. I haven’t visited Florida in nearly ten years, and I’ve never been to Orlando or Kissimmee, but it feels vibrant and real on this screen. Maybe that’s only because it’s winter here in Missouri (albeit a warm one), but I long to run bare-legged under the hot Florida sun.
