A fable about looking up a new fandom on AO3
I got ship vibes from the Dark Elf captain and the Tarkian merchant in Tectum Carvos and decided to check out the Vagrus fandom on ao3. Folks, there isn't one! There is NO fanfic based on this game 🤯 the tag doesn't exist!
And now for something vulnerable: I still want to write this fic, but I think this will be my first time writing for a nonexistent fandom, so we'll see how I do with no engagement at all.

There is a type of person who gets overwhelmed by freedom in extremely open sandbox RPGs like Kenshi, Vagrus, or Mount & Blade. The type of game that doesn't give you guidance or objectives or the like.
I am not like that so I'm not exactly sure what the best way to help with that is, but I want to try with a simple suggestion: Go with whatever option seems coolest to you and try to roleplay it. If the game is to your taste at all there's probably going to be at least one option that sounds interesting.
For example, the first time I played a Mount & Blade game I was drawn to the idea of being a bandit and growing my own power by raiding the other factions, so this served as the goal that was guiding my more immediate decisions.

Fandoms I might one day write for that are not Witcher:
Disco Elysium: probably the only one on this list with compelling, complex, actually morally grey (or even black) female characters. I am inspired by Joyce and Klaasje, maybe shipped together, maybe not. Maybe I'll do what I really want to do and write a worldbuilding travelogue from the POV of the three mercenaries. But to feel ok, I'll have to read the book first.
Red Dead Redemption 2: maybe Dutch and Hosea before it all went to shit, maybe Sadie being a mercenary in the south.
Vagrus: deeply-felt fuckbuddies Kral Hestaera (dark elf army captain of an exiled regiment)/Prince Kareem (young merchant Prince making a name for himself) against a backdrop of protecting Tectum Carvos from the wyrms and trying to help their two disparate populations cohabit.
Master and Margarita: I just really like Woland, idk. I'd probably do it implicitly with the face of a more pop-culture property, but yeah.
Bonus Round: Silmarillion. I would need to reread the Silm (and by reread I mean reread small parts of it and read most of it for the first time) before I'm comfortable writing Tolkien fanfic, so I don't know if this one will ever happen. But if it does, joy to me, because the community is great!

The Empire is sending its legions to the desert to prepare for a war with the Green Continent. Meanwhile, the Ahari people are fighting for their sacred sites and oases. While the Handjari are trying to keep the peace in the greatest city in the region, Kabur.

Started a new playthrough of Vagrus: The Riven Realms and am sort of doing a Let's Play of it on a server I'm in.
It's part merchant simulation part open world RPG. You play as a caravan master in a harsh post-apocalyptic world. You build your wealth by leading the brave souls who travel outside of the relative safety of civilization to move goods, travelers, and information between settlements.
You can set yourself your own goal, or even play in a freeform style with no ending or overarching objective.
It is difficult, reactive, dense with meaningful choices, and pretty interesting too. Note that the bulk of the game is just reading, though.
Anyway, I'd say the playthrough is going decently so far. We had a minor blunder early in that we accepted a job to move some merchants to the next city we were traveling to without knowing they were carrying more goods than we could bear, so we had to sell some at a loss before going out.
Other than that, we already acquired a couple of capable-looking companions and have a decent amount of supplies. We still don't quite know where to travel next, but since we are playing an apprentice mage who cares more about exploration and knowledge than trading I think we'll want to gain some reputation with the relevant faction. That could be our medium-term objective and could influence what we decide to do in the short-term as well.
