Keeper of the Current (Inquisitor Archetype)

When it comes to the devout in a world with multiple religions, such divine figures can feel like the worshipper’s whole world, even if the deity doesn’t have much direct influence over certain aspects of their lives.

However, the nature of worship is that the message of a particular god is altered to appeal to certain groups, and with such alterations come changes to the divine blessings granted.

Enter the Keepers of the Current, inquisitors that are just as devout and eager to hunt the enemies of the faith as any other, but focused on the lens of aquatic peoples.

The text makes this sound like a big deal, but honestly it mostly feels like “what if inquisitor but aquatic”, which I suppose is the point of many archetypes in Aquatic Adventures and Blood of the Sea, but I feel like there’s something missing from the concept aside from. “Does exactly what a terrestrial inquisitor does, but now with more water magic.”

Well, regardless, we’ll soon see exactly what these keepers have to offer as hunters of heretics and the enemies of the divine.

Hunting enemies is often nearly impossible underwater, the currents quickly washing away all traces, but these inquisitors are gifted with an ability to sense and recognize the wake of their prey, making up for what would normally be.

The inquisitor spell list is not known for it’s water-themed magic, so these monster hunters choose to sacrifice already learned magics to gain water magics normally seen in other spellcasting traditions, giving them an edge beneath the waves.

Not even the swiftest swimmers can escape these keepers, for the bane magic they can infuse their weaponry with also inhibits their ability to swim, leaving them in the grasp of these inquisitors.

This archetype grants a rare ability to track underwater, and provides an option for learning water-based magic that the inquisitor class lacks normally (though limited in that you have to replace previously known spells with it, instead of being able to learn new ones at higher levels when you level up.) While this is all very useful for helping you play inquisitor with any aquatic ancestry, the abilities don’t really excite. One could have easily replaced tracking with some other useful ability that would be unique to their underwater environment. Even still, it’s useful for those seeking that particular combination without ending up with any useless, “dead” abilities.

The ocean is vast, with expanses bereft of landmarks for miles and miles. As such, most aquatic peoples must rely on maintained markers and a good sense of direction to find their way. Perhaps the parallels between such navigation and faith are part of what spurs such strong religious beliefs in some groups beneath the sea?

The party has hitched a ride aboard a halfling vessel to their destination, and while the accomodations are somewhat cramped, it’s still quite an enjoyable voyage… that is until the party is accosted by a group of sea-dwelling folk of many species who claim this stretch of the ocean in the name of a god that none have ever heard of.

Luval of the merfolk has been having visions recently, though they are muddled for unknown reasons. The elders of his faith suggest he find a warpglass ooze, in hopes the distortions will help bring them into focus. However, such oozes can only be found on land, and while Luval’s faith is strong and his trust unbroken, the question of whether the elders spoke the truth or sought for him to be slain by such a predatory ooze or other dangers of the surface remains.

The Treasures of Lost Shokas are the subject of many a debate. These powerful artifacts promise great power if recovered, but many among the faithful of the Ocean Mother believe they are evil, being responsible for the fall of the Shokas Empire long ago.
